  • Why does Dragon Ball sound so bad in Japanese? What's with the sound quality, and what exactly is this magical 'broadcast audio'? Today, we answer those questions as we go through the history of how this all came to be.

Toei refuses the higher quality audio because they don't like being shown up by fans. They'd rather the audio deteriorate into oblivion than receive help.

Toei's actions (or lack of it) are mainly caused by stupid, fucked up, so-called "intellectual property" protection law. Without it, owners of VHS recordings of Dragon Ball episodes could with no worries release the broadcast audio.

@@ModestVejar I do plan on getting it myself because it’s by far the most beneficial way to own the Ocean dub in it’s entirety. Although the picture quality is a bit too bright than how it’s meant to be, it has the original masters from when it was first broadcast through syndication (Meaning that references to death they accidentally left in are intact here, unlike the Pioneer VHSs and DVDs), it has original recaps, eyecatches, next episode previews, promos, and the Toonami broadcast versions of Movies 1-3. Of course, there’s also the Madman DVDs from Australia and the Bridge Entertainment DVDs from the Netherlands, but it’s super hard to find them online nowadays, and other than the original Ocean masters and eyecatches, they don’t really have much of anything to offer. So if you want to own the entirety of the Ocean dub the way it’s meant to be, the Rock The Dragon set is the way to go. But I wish you good luck in obtaining it, because it’s hella expensive on Amazon (Where it is currently out of stock) and eBay.
However, I do plan on getting the Pioneer VHS box sets as well as 7 of the 17 Pioneer DVD singles soon because, well, for the VHS tapes, I simply also want to own the Ocean dub on VHS. And for the DVD singles, mostly for collecting and archival purposes (I also plan on uploading fragments of them to RUclips such as clips and DVD openings and closings) and it wouldn’t kill to watch them alongside the Rock The Dragon episodes every now and then.

as someone who initially could not stand the Japanese voices in DBZ, when I got my hands on that leaked audio and heard what it was pretty much supposed to sound like, the Japanese audio became 200% more tolerable, and now I'm rewatching the entire series in Japanese with the Funi subs
it's so wacky the that Toei wants nothing to do with this, a Blu-Ray release with this audio and color-corrected full-frame footage would net them a fortune, given that Japan isn't oversaturated with DBZ home releases like America is, and I'm sure people over there would love a more modern way to enjoy the series.

What’s amazing is Dragon Ball is so much more popular than something smaller like the Supermarionation shows. Yet the Supermarionation shows have had more care and attention put into their home media releases. Especially Thunderbirds (although that was stupidly cropped to 16:9 for its blu-ray release), Captain Scarlet & Joe 90. I mean they kept every film reel and magnetic audio tape for every show, that’s 9 years worth of material.

Someone might have already commented this, but the reason why the high-quality audio of Dragon Ball Z exists on VHS was because some VHS decks were capable of hi-fi stereo, which roughly has the same sound Quality as a CD, in fact some music lovers would record CDs onto their VHS tapes to fit an entire artists or bands discography on a single tape without needing to swap discs or cassettes.
As for the film copies with optical tracks degrading, this problem also occurred with the surviving episodes of Doctor Who because many of the black-and-white episodes only survived as 16mm telerecordings, So the sound quality was pretty awful.
But dedicated fans from back in the day made audio recordings from reel to reel machines from their TV sets, The BBC found out these audio recordings not only were the only surviving sample of many of these episodes that have been junked, but also found out the sound quality was far better than the sound on the surviving episodes so as a result for the DVD releases of the B&W episodes they often use sound recordings from what the fans recorded from back in the day.
It’s thanks to those fans that we have high-quality audio of many of these episodes.
    Great video.

Toei was reportedly the only studio in Japan who threw away all the original audio masters of their Anime and live-action shows. All the other studios kept theirs, and that's why they still sound great. Toei doesn't really care about preservation at all. The fact that they also went back and changed the placement of the next episode previews on all of their older shows (something the other studios never did) proves this, too. The order was originally preview first, followed by the ending credits.

Wow, I can't believe how many people comment before watching the video. So many theories and arguments made by some of you guys are debunked within the video.
Anyways, I think that what Toei did to the audio masters was sad, yet understandable. As stated, home releases of cartoons in Japan was nowhere near as common as the United States, so the guys at Toei probably just thought that they would never need access to the masters anymore. They also probably thought that the audio wouldn't get as muffled as it ultimately ended up. I think that they were wise to stop doing this to Dragon Ball by the time GT aired.
Thank you for stating straight-up that monaural does not equal lower quality. I've heard this argument so many times, and it makes people sound stupid; the amount of channels does not affect the audio quality.
I'm glad that this broadcast audio exists, and hope that it gets included in future home releases of Dragon Ball Z. I hope Toei (that company specifically) uses it to give Japanese fans Dragon Ball Z in its best quality audio-wise, and I hope that FUNimation does the same for North America and Europe. Dragon Ball Z in Japanese is considered to have much better voice-acting than Dragon Ball Kai in Japanese, so hearing it without degradation would be wonderful.

The same thing was true for Sailor Moon for a long time. But when Viz re-released the series, the original broadcast audio quality was restored.
