Theo Gillan true, but you at least get a sense that this continent sized piece of land is actually, you know, a continent. Don’t get me wrong I like the look and feel of Skyrim and it does a pretty good job spacing areas, but real talk, it’s the size of a county, not a whole country.
I often see Skyrim in these kind of comparisons but often wonder: are the many MANY sprawling dungeons included in the overall map size? Because I often feel I spend more time in those than the overworld.
@@stevegarvey5607 no but you can find one in blackreach the largest cave in the game which connects to a large dwarven ruins this thing is uber large it even has a dragon in it
The thing about RDR2's map is that even though it's not the biggest map, it's still pretty large. It's also incredibly detailed so those who may be complaining about how "small" the map is haven't taken the incredible amount of detail in consideration. The details make up for the "small" map.
Everyone should remember that the size of a game world doesn't determine the quality of it. In some of the ones shown in this video the map is empty with copy pasted areas just to boast the game being big and giving you freedom.
Yeah. I haven't played all of these games, but I think RDR2 has the best game world in terms if density and quality. Just walking through the forests and finding all kinds of secrets and encounters is super fun, and there are a lot of interesting places, some if which even change over time
When comparing the to playable maps GTA5 is bigger than RDR2 even if you do just land area. This is what it looks like when you use the measurement system built by rockstar ruclips.net/video/tB43Z295kdM/видео.html
A world can be as big as it wants, but if i'm not enjoying exploring it then it's trivial. This is why i like the Yakuza games, they are just small parts of cities (only a few blocks) but it just means that all of the mini games and side activites are closer to each other and that fun can be found in every corner.
Some of the biggest and most popilar video game maps compared including games like RDR2 , Spiderman PS4 Horizon zero dawn, Which is your favourite map?

Franco Alfieri nah fam, the fast travel kinda takes the fun out of things but it’s super helpful. My first goal after the great plateau was to light up all the towers throughout every region. It was time consuming but later helped me out. It’s like a love hate thing with the fast travel. I hate how some people just bash it completely because of it.
TimeSnake Except there are a couple things you aren’t taking into account: 1. MMORPGs usually have giant areas with nothing in order to act as a buffer between level ranges and NPCs. It is done so low-level characters will not accidentally wander into high-level areas as the travel has to be done very deliberately. 2. Also most MMORPGs include gigantic oceans or mountain ranges that serve the same purpose of keeping various level ranges / factions away from each other. Since these areas are traversable they should be included in over-all area (although it is usually smarter to do so by boat or mount or other traveling device). 3. MMORPGs typically have numerous expansions. Unlike console games which include maybe a couple new areas and new enemies available via DLC and only have a handful per title until the development team moves on to another game; MMORPGs release 10+ expansions; each of them usually offering an entire new continent, moon, ethereal plane, etc to explore and that also needs to be added to the size of the geographical game world.
TimeSnake I’m talking about how MMORPGs typically move out their intended level range in a concentric circle around starting areas. There are typically large buffers between these areas; trying to guide the player to complete lower-level content and not wander too far into the next area without starting to worry they are traveling too far. If you’d like an example; we can use a game like Everquest. From Qeynos you would begin your hunt through the Karanas; starting with West Karana. But they intentionally place a large unpopulated area between Western Karana and Eastern Karana; and then another gap to Southern Karana. So that players leveling in Western Karana would have to really be trying to accidentally wander way out into Eastern Karana without thinking they were getting too far away. There are also huge buffer zones like this to keep aggressive factions away from each other. If you are a human or elf; you can’t just wander easily into an ogre or troll city. Same with a game like Warcraft where you have to travel through a wide expanse or buffer zone if you are horde to wander near an alliance stronghold. The same can be said about the oceans. Unlike the other games where they serve as an impassible border to defines the limit of the game world; in games like Everquest the areas like Ocean of Tears is explorable... but you are supposed to use a boat to do so. If you lower your faction killing the boatsmen, however, or their allies, and can not use the boat.... then you quickly learn a lesson about not making the wrong enemies as you swim across an ocean. Or not to screw around on the boat and fall off (which I learned the hard way once while drunk). Nevertheless, the area is sparsely filled with various islands that contain small shops, quest items, monsters, etc... so there is a purpose to the area and it should be included as part of the game map.
It is which is impressibe, also if you look to the previous map from Arma that of Odyssey you can see Altis-Lemnos in there too, just a lot smaller ;-)
Someone in the comments said something about wanting an open world Star Wars. I'd like that if it were ever possible and EA didn't have the rights. But also, especially after rewatching all the extended editions of the films, I really wish we could get an open world Middle Earth game with the entirety of Middle Earth in it. Done well with a good narrative as well. I think it'd be cool to have epic battles like at Minas Tirith or Helms Deep. But I know that will never happen, and if so, not for a very very long time. In the mean time I'd like another Middle Earth: Shadow of _____ game. It'd have to be a new cast of characters but I would love to see more of the nemesis system. Speaking of which, if they every did make that massive open world I spoke of, I'd definitely want a future version of the nemesis system in there. somewhere

@@TheRealQpef There's a circuit race around the US that has a recommended time of two hours. I think it's possible to complete that one in about an hour and a half. The coast to coast trip takes about 30 - 45 minutes, depending on your car.
@@mythologue OK I get it. I didn't play TC1 and TC2 hasn't a circuit race around US xD I think they understood that a race around US would take so much time for an arcade race game
@@manoloelsuave222 That's true. It's a massive map and that race is painful unless you're into endurance in racing games. That may be why it's an end game race (for faction points and money) rather than a story mission. Maybe that's why you missed it?
I just got Crew 2. Is there really no quick travel mode? What is the fastest way to get across certain parts of the map?

Theo Gillan true, but you at least get a sense that this continent sized piece of land is actually, you know, a continent. Don’t get me wrong I like the look and feel of Skyrim and it does a pretty good job spacing areas, but real talk, it’s the size of a county, not a whole country.

The thing about RDR2's map is that even though it's not the biggest map, it's still pretty large. It's also incredibly detailed so those who may be complaining about how "small" the map is haven't taken the incredible amount of detail in consideration. The details make up for the "small" map.

Curious how MMORPGs like Everquest, World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XIV, etc stack up to some of these iterations.
TimeSnake Except there are a couple things you aren’t taking into account:
World of Warcraft is around 250km2
Elder scrolls online is a massive map that you can wander around at any level. It’s crazy.
Bernie OrGuillotine2020 You should try Elder Scrolls Online :b it’s massive and highly detailed without areas of fast emptiness.
The biggest map is from a relatively old game... Surprising
Sure, but obviously without big details, only textures and fog. Actually the best biggest detailed map is from Red Dead Redemption 2.

Jacob Lakota oh I see, I just scrolled the comments and didn’t get a chance to watch the video to be fair so...
Speaking of which, if they every did make that massive open world I spoke of, I'd definitely want a future version of the nemesis system in there. somewhere
My oh my, I never knew Altis was about 10x the size of Lemnos in AC Odyssey
Been to Lemnos the recreation is pretty accurate and one to one scale, they even got in trouble with the Greek army for taking pictures near a military base
