  • My name is Edward John Smith, Commander of the British Royal Navy, Commodore of the White Start Line, and Captain of the RMS Titanic. The Titanic was under my command on her maiden voyage across the Atlantic Ocean, and it would serve as my retirement voyage, a victory lap for a long and decorated career. This should have been an easy, simple trip, with no serious challenges. Little did I know, that what started as a grand, luxurious excursion across the sea would end with the passengers under my care forced to try and survive in frigid waters. Watch the story of my life and my final moments aboard the most famous ship in history in this HD, full episode of I Am. This video is based on true real life events.

      Smith had recieved a lot of ice warnings the day of the sinking. But he kept steaming full ahead, like a rookie officer. Even when the ocean became flat and calm, which made it hard to spot icebergs, he still wouldn't slow down. Not to mention the binoculars that were locked away, so the lookouts had to relly on their eyesight, on a moonless night. Is the captain to blame entirelly? Not at all. But he is partly responsible. Along with everyone else who screwed up that night.

    "The bridge starts to slip beneath the waves, and so, do I.."
    then, when the in video links pop up, the glass breaks, engulfing the bridge, and captain Smith with water, before fading into black. the final few notes of music play as the video ends.

    On the Night of April 14th, 1912, R.M.S Titanic was sailing through the North Atlantic ocean. Captain Smith had been hanging out with the passengers that cold April night, at a party in the a la carte Restaurant, he retired early, and went up on the bridge where he met with Charles Lightoller, they talked about the weather conditions and Captain Smith went to bed, but asked lightoller to notify him if weather conditions change. Lightoller went to bed a little after, because Murdoch took over command with the ship, lightoller was relived and and passed on the Captains message. Soon an Iceberg was spotted by 1st Officer Murdoch, and soon after The lookouts saw it and rang the bell, but Murdoch had already ordered "Hard A Starboard" and the ship was already turning by the time Fredrick fleet (One of the lookouts) was on the phone with the bridge. Titanic struck the Iceberg, and the forward 6 compartments began flooding, Captain Smith was awoken by the jolt of the ship after it hit the Iceberg and he rushed to the bridge, Smith ordered Watertight Doors closed but Murdoch had already done so, Smith then ordered the ship to stop. After that he asked somebody to get Thomas Andrews (Ship's Designer), to assess the damage. Andrew's came up to the bridge and went down with Captain Smith to check the damage. (On the way Smith calmed some passengers) Then both Andrew's and Smith went back to the bridge where Andrew's confirmed that Titanic was going to sink, Captain smith ordered Woman and children into the lifeboats, but some thought he said "Woman and children only" which is possibly why so many boats weren't filled up to their capacity. Captain Smith began to feel scared, and became useless to the evacuation. Later in the sinking, He and Thomas Andrews tried to call back lifeboats, but none came back.. He told the Wireless Operators that it was Time to go, "Everyman for himself" Thomas Andrew's who was in the smoking Room, came back to the bridge when the officers were getting the collapsibles ready. And he told Captain smith that they had to go, they both jumped off the bridge wing, and possibly died of hypothermia, or was crushed by the fall of a funnel. Captain Smith's body was never found nor was Thomas Andrews. R.I.P Captain Smith 1850-1912.

    I am a person who can easily "daydream". Many people can't imagine what it would be like, walking on the deck of a ship that is going down and there is nothing you can do about it. The panic, the horror knowing you'll probably die. I can imagine that. I close my eyes and imagine myself in such a situation, i think i would be scared, very scared. To the point where i'd try to come up with something to float, or something to keep me alive. But eventually i'd know that it's useless. I think the panic and the fear would be beyond my control. I am a person who usually hold in their tears in movies. Movies like Titanic, but even "chick flicks" (Yes, i watch those, big whoop). I always feel like i shouldn't cry, as if it's wrong. Knowing myself, i would probably cry at that moment. Just let it all go, it doesn't matter anyway. But i would not want to drown, it scares me to even think about it. I'd rather try to stay alive until i freeze to death.
    In the end, we can make jokes about things but we're all human. You can say "i'd just grab a door and float on it", but you would never do that or think or that. The panic and fear (at least for me) would be so great, all i would be able to do is cry and think about how much i would have wanted to do in my life. I'd probably try to find a solution and even get so desperate that i might grab an object to maybe float on, but it would be useless. R.i.p to all the people who died aboard the Titanic, and to all the people who died in a way they shouldn't have.

    5:57 um, no disrespect this is incredible and I really enjoyed watching it, but you do realize alarm systems didn’t exist on ships back in 1912 right? The only “alarm” they had was the crew members going around the ship and waking up the passengers. Also, I do want to clear up the fact that Titanic was not out to break any speed records. This is often misinterpreted because of a women in the first class reception room hearing Bruce Ismay say to captain smith, that they were going to beat her sister Olympic in terms of how fast she was going, but even then, they were simply just going a bit faster than Olympic on her maiden voyage, and they simply thought it was good news. Not a “let’s speed up the ship”. People also think from the movie that Bruce ismay wanted Titanic to go faster so they could arrive a day early. He never wanted titanic to arrive a day early. He and any other ship in the world even today knows better than to do that. If they did do that, there would be ships in Titanic’s dock and they’d have to stay on the ship for another day and it would mess everything up in terms of scheduling for other ships. There was ice warnings and captain smith actually plotted his course further south all the time to avoid the icebergs that he was informed of. He was never informed about the one that she hit. Therefore, he didn’t take action. This was because the wireless operator told the Carpathia to shut up because he was jamming his signals, so the Carpathia’s wireless was shut down for the night. When the iceberg was spotted by Fredrick Fleet, Murdoch told the engines to reverse and slow down, making Titanic’s rudder far less effective. If he had actually gone full steam ahead, and turned the wheel hard over, it’s a sure they would’ve missed that iceberg.
    In short, it had nothing to do with the Titanic’s speed, and the collision happened due human error. Going fast was Cunards thing, and White Star was all about comfort on their ships. I also want to say I didn’t hate this video, I thought it was fantastic and very informative, but I really wanted to clear up the myth about Titanic going to fast.

    • @truesoulghost2777
      @truesoulghost2777 5 лет назад

      But speed up they did.
      It being the cap's last voyage maybe he was trying to end with another record.
      Going to fast is exactly why they couldn't get out of the way in time.

    • @Cleptro
      @Cleptro 5 лет назад

      Quick thing: Carpathia wasn't the one contacting Titanic. She wasn't even in range until Titanic was already sinking. Her first message was "Do you know Cape Cod has a batch of messages for you?" To which Philips replied, "Come quick! It's a CQD, OM." The ship you're thinking of is RMS Californian, which reported the exact iceberg Titanic hit, and, in the process of doing so, unfortunately "blasted [Jack Philips'] ears off." The response to this was "Shut up, shut up, I'm working Cape Race."

    that's the common assumption today that the Titanic wasn't build to have enough lifeboats for all passengers.
    The thing is however that principles to saving people and for passenger safety was different than today. Back in 1912, the use of lifeboats was to transport passenger from a ship in distress to another one coming for its aid. The principle wasn't that the lifeboats where to be used to evacuate all passengers at once. The idea was to transport passenger in lifeboats in waves to a ship sailing in the same shipping lane. Ships deliberately sailed in shipping lanes because of safety - amongst other things because then ships could help each other if they became in distress. You can here on youtube find recordings of the Titanic sending so many telegraph messages in here final hours. This is because of the priciple of saving passengers amongst other things.
    It was precisely AFTER the Titanic disaster that safety protocols were changed to have lifeboats for all passengers to more or less floating around after the ship in distress had when down waiting for rescue.

    • @harrietharlow9929

      She actually carried Welin davits that could accommodate more than one lifeboat. It was a management decision not to load more lifeboats, based on the perception that ships were supposed to serve as their lifeboats and even if they did get damaged badly enough to sink, it would take long enough so that lifeboats could be rowed back and forth, ferrying people to the rescue ship(s).

    I had a distant relative who was a crew member and was in the boiler room when they hit the iceberg. He was ordered into lifeboat 15 by an officer. his story is actually really chaotic because for a while he assumed they weren't in any danger and returned to the boiler room after going to get some lamps.

      That reminds me of how my father told me that his great grandfather explored and helped do repairs on the Lusitania before it left New York City for its final voyage and saw how it was in danger of sinking.

      What-? Smith bragged that the ship could not be sunk, not himself. Smith had that right to brag, he was a seasoned captain of several decades with few accidents.

    One time me and one of my friends were on a canoe on the lake near my house and one of us nearly capsized it and neither of us had life jackets on, despite both of us being excellent swimmers and it only being maybe 100' from the shore it got the adrenaline pumping... that is for the better sometimes, the trails to get to the lake are the second and 3rd hardest I know of, it didn't help that each of us had about 30lbs of gear on our backs and I had a hatchet in my hands while he had one in its sheath on his belt.
