  • The Gates of Thermopylae are where the Greek people would make their last stand against the massive invading force of King Xerxes and his million strong army. The Persians have already swept across the ancient world and none have been able to stop them. So what chance does a tiny force of 300 warriors have to hold off against such insurmountable odds? Surely Xerxes will have no trouble crushing our token resistance. There's only one thing he forgot - We are Spartans. I Am King Leonidas and this is our story.
    This video is inspired by true real life events.

    It makes me smile that a King named Leonidas led a relatively small group of soldiers to fight in defence of their country against an unassailable enemy, and that now, 2500 years later their sacrifice is still spoken of throughout the world, stories told, movies made, immortalised. I sometimes wonder, how would they feel knowing this?

      @Arianit Krasniqi What is impressive you ask? Well ill tell you whats impressive. Men walked into death with no fear and died for their country. You can argue others have done this as well, but few have walked into death knowing that every soldier around them was going to die and that there was NO chance at survival. Many have ran into battle confidently and with pride, but they think they will win. That is whats impressive, with no hope and knowing that their death was near they ran in. Most men would falter and run, like you or even I, but not them. They are the spartans

    • @carman8140
      @carman8140 3 года назад +36

      @Arianit Krasniqi This is whats impressive: After the betrayal by Ephialtes, Leonidas gave the orfer to retreat to his 7000 forces. His 300 bodyguards, some slaves and a few others stayed behijd to hold them off. Including him. Its impressive that a 7000 strong army held off a more than 70000 strong army for 3 days and looked to keep holding. If Ephialtes hadnt of betrayed them, they most likely would have held.

    • @ericscott7120
      @ericscott7120 3 года назад +29

      @Arianit Krasniqi Yes they were the black sheep but that's because they had odd customs and they dominated the other city states for a very long time. When it comes to them joining Persia, It was that or have them get wiped off the map because most of the spartan warriors were dead after the battles. That's like getting mad that Cincinnati joined an invading country after all the State and National guard died, WTF else are they gonna do. Also, they aren't criminals for joining Persia. All the city states hated each other and were barely bound together by peace treaties that they all often broke. To conclude, aint nothing wrong with fucking your battle buddy at the end of hard fight lmfao.

      If not for their superstitions the Spartans would have sent their entire army, about 5000 elite hoplites, to fight at Thermopylae which would have stopped the Persian advance dead in its tracks. That's the sad irony of Thermopylae, that it was so great and so brave a sacrifice that could have been entirely avoided if not for superstition and squabbling.

At the times, people would've more likely shifted into the hands of the Persians-just telling themselves that it was normal for a stronger country to devour a weaker. But the unity that Europeans felt in this instance is what would ultimately save their entire culture even when the war persisted afterwards, and would be passed on in stories throughout the ages.

One would think the greeks would be more precise with their own facts. These days its pretty wide and not so narrow anymore, and there are hot springs where you can bath in the winter, which, some dudes, regularily do.
    The real numbers were like 7500-10,000 greeks (not just spartans) vs maybe 50,000 - 100,000 persians, which was actually pretty beatable at that place, if it wouldnt have been for the traitor.

And trust me, as a greek he would have pointed it out if they lost to a betrayal. They were rather overwhelmed due to good persian scouting and a misconception from the Phokis soldiers, who thought they faced the whole persian army, which is why they retreated and things went bad for the greeks.
