@@DarkoTrpevski This is actually not true, Spartans and other Greeks used bronze breastplates, along with the shield, it wasn't just leather diaper badasses, they had heavy armor.
@@DarkoTrpevski Hollywood nonsense. The Spartans prided themselves as being the most effective warriors in the world, to be an effective warrior means having good armour. It's purely Hollywood being unsatisfied with reality that has spread this myth because that way they look more badass, because apparently 300 dudes holding off an army of over 100k for over a week isn't badass enough.
“I felt myself being dragged away by my countrymen.” The deep meaning(s) of this one line should be revealed: 1) Somehow, someway, Spartans put their Kings body’s retrieval as their main priority, showing the love and respect they have for him. 2) When Leo died, it was the spirits of his fellow Spartans taking his spirit off the field, yet again showing the love, loyalty, and respect they kept for him, in life and now death. Let that sink in.
Actually this story is a mere myth than the truth. Herodotus, the first historian from which we know everything about the greco-persian war wrote nothing about him. And trust me, as a greek he would have pointed it out if they lost to a betrayal. If not for their superstitions the Spartans would have sent their entire army, about 5000 elite hoplites, to fight at Thermopylae which would have stopped the Persian advance dead in its tracks. That's the sad irony of Thermopylae, that it was so great and so brave a sacrifice that could have been entirely avoided if not for superstition and squabbling.
@@ddandymann And yet, it was the sacrifice at Thermopylae which defined what was the 'West' to the people in Europe. At the times, people would've more likely shifted into the hands of the Persians-just telling themselves that it was normal for a stronger country to devour a weaker. But the unity that Europeans felt in this instance is what would ultimately save their entire culture even when the war persisted afterwards, and would be passed on in stories throughout the ages.

One would think the greeks would be more precise with their own facts. These days its pretty wide and not so narrow anymore, and there are hot springs where you can bath in the winter, which, some dudes, regularily do. The real numbers were like 7500-10,000 greeks (not just spartans) vs maybe 50,000 - 100,000 persians, which was actually pretty beatable at that place, if it wouldnt have been for the traitor.
No, there were no 10 thousand Greeks. More like 300 spartans, 700 Thespians. Persians had more than 100 thousand troops. The Persian Empire was the biggest of its time.
