With the help of the Museum's possessed curator, he plans to turn New York into a really scary place to live! Now only the Ghostbusters can save New York City, by turning paranormal pest control into an art form!

    Notice how brilliant this is: in the first ten minutes, they've established a threat, introduced and defined the characters, with scenarios that establish their personalities and priorities, filled with "show, don't tell". They don't have to tell us that Ray is sympathetic and compassionate, Winston is a bit cynical and jaded, Egon values science over emotion, or Peter is a sarcastic jerk. They create these moments that allow us to see the characters in action. Yes, the movie was flawed, but there was a lot of good about this movie too. It will always stand in the shadow of the original, but it actually has some pretty good moments in it.

      And it foreshadows how the goo is affected by emotions, with it rising up out the cracks, getting stuck to the carriage, and then being exposed to a series of angry moments between multiple groups of people (ranging from disagreeing with a ticket to demanding a specific job be done asap

    • @nighthawk0077
      @nighthawk0077 2 года назад +6

      I thought it was ok, but certainly not anywhere near brilliant. Also we already know these characters, it's more about checking in with them, seeing where they are now 5 years later and letting the audience know the Ghostbusters have closed shop and gone their separate ways.

    • @kirinrex
      @kirinrex 2 года назад +10

      @@nighthawk0077 Remember, though: this came out in 1989. Not everybody had a VCR in 1989, and theatrical re-releases didn't happen often, so if people didn't happen to catch ghostbusters on TV, they might not have seen it. My comment "brilliant" wasn't about the quality of the dialog or the quality of the movie (which were pretty far from the original), but rather I thought it brilliant from a writing standpoint that they hit the important points of character introduction. I see a LOT of movies these days that simply TELL you about the characters through exposition rather than showing you.

      Well Jason Reitman was in the second film and he did his father proud when he did Ghostbusters afterlife. Let's only hope that Jason Reitman will direct the next one because the rumors are true there is another Ghostbusters movie. Let's hope they make it really interesting where they enter the ghost dimension but this isn't necessarily the fourth Ghostbusters movie This is actually going to be the 6th Ghostbusters movie even though the Remake doesn't count as a sequel it does fall in line with the Ghostbusters Cinematic Universe. But there was also the television series that counts as the miniseries and you also have to count the video game as the true third movie. And of course you had to get the okay from Dan Aykroyd and the late Harold Ramis. They created Ghostbusters and it was Ivan Reitman who brought the story to the screen. To this day Ghostbusters is considered an American phenomenon and possibly the greatest bit of entertainment since Live Aid.

      I like it, but compared to the original this really is the weaker film by a long way. When people say "the sequel is never as good." they are talking about films like this. Beat for beat repeat, but with less passion from those involved. But as I said, I still like it - the villain is great and that painting scared the shit out of me as kid.

    I don't know what's more remarkable; the fact that 2016, the proposed "end of the world" was when that unspeakable reboot came out, or the fact that Jason Reitman is not only at the birthday party, quoting his dad on the Ghostbusters being full of crap, but ultimately being the one to save the franchise with Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

    • @andrewbloom7637
      @andrewbloom7637 2 года назад

      Save the franchise? Not even close. For background, Jason's previous five films (2011's "Young Adult", 2013's "Labor Day", 2014's "Men, Women and Children", and 2018's "Tully" and "The Front Runner") all underperformed commercially, and "Afterlife" looks set to continue his "losing streak", considering what the film's up against, both in terms of the films released in the same time period AND the costs of the film.
      A film's budget (also called the "PRODUCTION budget") includes all costs relating to its development, production, and post-production, but production costs don't cover distribution and marketing, which adds another $35 million or so on average. Also, consider that movie theaters get roughly half of the profits from ticket sales, with the studio and/or distributor getting the other half. Given "Afterlife" 's $75 million PRODUCTION budget, hypothetical advertising budgets of $35 million, $37.5 million, and $50 million would bring the total cost of the film to $110 million, $112.5 million, and $125 million, respectively. Also, there will be extra costs to move the film away from the worst months of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic (the idiomatic "elephant in the room"), which happened 4 times in total. In those scenarios (which ignore the costs of Covid-related delays), "Afterlife" would have to gross at least $220 million, $225 million, and $250 million at the worldwide box office, respectively, to break even and become a commercial success. Taking into account the costs of Covid-related delays, "Afterlife" would have to gross at least $275 million dollars to break even commercially and become a success.
      The 2016 female reboot just got a bad rap, simple as that. It did reasonably well with critics, and the ladies of the reboot even stated that they were huge fans of the 1984 original film. It closely followed the fundamentals of the 1984 original, while also allowing for room to stand out in its own right, and it had its own tributes to deceased original cast member Harold Ramis, who passed away in 2014. Harold's son Daniel has a cameo as a metalhead, and his likeness is used on a bust outside Erin Gilbert's office. Unfortunately, it got caught in the crossfire of controversy, especially with the political climate of 2016 and whatnot, along with outrage from fans of the original films, who labelled the reboot as "sacrilegious".
