It's what makes it a great movie actually...the plot is simple, no amazing plot twists. It's why I can re-watch a lot without being much less fun. The action, camera work, special effects, actors and directing is what makes it an amazing movie.
It's all style and execution. It's cinema. It's action cinema. Sometimes all you really need is brilliant action, gorgeous visuals, amazing direction, editing and cinematography and you've got yourself one of the best action movies of the 21st century.
The funny part is that dude who made prop gave it to. George said "can it play" prop dude said no. George said "well it needs to be playable for the movie redo it to make playable and able to shoot fire" and the dude did it.
It's actually completely realistic. Ancient armies would play music(usually drums) to boost the morale of their troops, this is to get the most value out of their soldiers.

have you watched the original Mad Max films (Mel Gibson)? If not, you really should, first two really rocked, and Mad Max 2 in particular is a slightly better film as well compared to Fury Road, as much as I liked this one too, and showed the world a bit of Australia.
One of the best modern day action films alongside the John Wick franchise. Too many hacks out there that don't understand what makes a great action scene/film.

@Marius Ipad Considering it requires research to find out the Coma Doof Warriors name, and that he's specifically talking about seeing it in the theatre, I'd hazard a guess that it was not yet public knowledge that it was his mother's face. So I think it's perfectly reasonable he focused on the flaming guitar.
Everyone talks about how badass the guitar guy is, but they don't give any credit to the drummers who build up his hype with an awesome beat that he is then able to deliver on, but I recognize their work!

That character is so cool. They actually had plans at one point to make a comic about his backstory. That mask he’s wearing is made from his own mothers skinned face and he is completely blind from birth. His name is “The Coma Doof Warrior” and that car is called “The Doof Wagon” (both named after Australian Doof parties). We never got a clear backstory because that comic never ended up being made but we have a couple of different versions of what it may have been. The first one comes from George Miller himself who says that he lived in an abandoned mine with his mother as a child, surviving off of rats. Immortan Joe was passing nearby the mine one day and heard him shredding on his guitar and took him in. The second one comes from iOTA (the Australian singer/songwriter who plays him in the movie). He says that he was a child prodigy at music, and that his mother was a musician as well. He grew up in a happy environment until they were attacked. His mother was taken away and a few days later someone dropped her severed head into his lap. Immortan Joe found him clutching her head and decided to take him in. The mask he wears has 2 plausible origins, those being that he either cut her face from her skull himself and made the mask, or that Joe did it and gave the mask to him so that he could help take revenge against the world while wearing his own mothers screaming face. I personally prefer iOTA’s version of the story better. Anyway he’s a super neat character and I wish they had made that comic because he is so cool and I love him.
Basically?......It IS war tactics.....To scare the enemy from afar so they know the threat is coming, and with a vengeance. Also to keep the team in timing. So they can fight, run their rig and all that efficiently. It also keeps moral up. it does ALOT of things ppl don't realize.

There is very significant amount of CGI in this movie. It's kind of hilarious that they marketed it as "almost no CGI." There are CGI touchups on every single frame of this film. Every single one. But they at least built the cars practically, and performed many of the stunts practically. But I mean we're talking every single explosion is CGI, every single death at speed, every stunt that was too dangerous for real, every single frame with Furiosa's missing arm, the storms, all the way down to the gecko Max crushes at the beginning. This movie is like one step down from an Avengers level of CGI. They just happened to do awesome practical work on top of it.

If this was made by Disney and Marvel, the polecats would be fake, the peacemaker, Bigfoot, gigahorse, everything would be fake including the background. What they did with this movie was use a stunning amount of practical effects, and where they used cgi, it was difficult to notice. Because you cannot see good cgi. If you see cgi, then it didn’t do it’s job. I think a great example is the explosion of the People Eater. When they filmed it, they actually exploded the real vehicle, and in editing used cgi onto enhance the explosion to make it more spectacular. But because it was on top of practical effects, you wouldn’t know it was fake. Also, I mean, cutting off an actress’s arm for a film probably isn’t okay with the unions, so I’ll def. give you that
I'd say that the sandstorm scene perfectly exemplifies that is not precisely realism what makes the difference when it comes to great or bad CGI, but rather the cinematic artistry. Granted the sand tornado was not the most realistic shot of the movie, but you can't deny it was DAMN awesome. And that's because the CGI was well supported by so much more! Perfect score, frame composition, the pacing, even the color palette. It all added up to create an amazing scene. It wasn't just plain and senseless CGI with no thought into it like Marvel or Kong or some crap like that.
The editing in this film is stellar. You never lose track of what’s happening in spite of all the movement and changing angles. Such a well made movie.
Sequels never really are the suits give the directors half the time and expect them to shit out a more profitable sequel not necessarily a better movie
When u think about it, the guitar guy is actually the wasteland equivalent of a battle musician who commands the movements of an army with his beats. It makes sense that immortal joe use that since there are no more radios and that wasteland combat is all about vehicles and that involves LOUD noise. When I rewatch the movie, his songs are fast when chasing and when stopping, he slows down the song. The truck setup with multiple drummers and stereos to make sure everyone can hear over the noise is genius.

Action movies aren't a genre I like..I prefer drama, like historical boring as all hell drama. So when I watch action with my husband and sons it has to be well done, not just explosions for no reason. Mad Max was well written and well acted and well directed.
Late to the party here, but this is more or less John Blanche's art ("Blanchitsu") that provided much of the Warhammer 40K early imagery - same tones, similar composition. Absolutely amazing.

The Doofwarrior is the best part out of the whole movie. Funny enough, the guitarist who played that role revealed in an interview that he had fun and a bit trouble playing the flamethrower guitar (most of it was the design) but he did his best.
One of the most perfect films ever made, imo. It manages to capture this insane world and bring it to life, and somehow makes it beautiful at times. It never sits down and tries to explain to the viewers what's going on, it let's the story flow.

This film is definitely one of the most rewatchable film in existence. Every single time this gets shown on the telly I will watch it from start to finish, whilst grinning like an idiot enjoying every single minute of madness and adrenalin like I'm watching it the first time.

Something that no one seems to comment on is how in unison these guys are while fighting, they could've made them easy dumb cannon fodder like most films, but here they synchronise their attacks, swing on the cranes to save their guys if they can, it's fun to watch when you see people helping one another to survive and also be competent as well.
The real important thing to remember is the guitarist. He gets direct orders from Immortan Joe's vehicle crew. His chords literally tell all of the drivers which way to go and what to do. Whether that be, take a left, or swarm the target and pincer it. Without him, the Warboys would be relatively unmanagable being bloodthirsty for combat.
Love how this movie doesn't treat its audience like idiots. There's no awkward exposition dump telling the audience that when a war boy 'chromes up it means they're about to kamikaze, it just ducking shows you and knows you'll get it.
It's also given a bit more light when Nux is driving in the storm. He's ranting about riding to Valhalla, and "I live, I die, I live again". They're trying to die epically in battle
Furiosa was great. It could have lost about 15-20 minutes and I tihnk it would have helped the pacing, but I loved it. Near the end Dementus' dialogue dragged on and didn't really add enough to justify it imo, a few other spots could have been trimmed. But damn what a followup, and I was cynical going in
If you watch the behind the scene everyone has a purpose. The “guitar guy” is actually like a mobile command center immortal Joe was a veteran of the gas wars and needed to keep command of his man and so the guitar dude is actually insuring orders. Joe is also frail and weak and giving his a man an opportunity to use the resources he’s stockpiled and seeing him at the head of the pursuit gives him a bit of legitimacy.
Gold was even scarcer in ancient times then it is today, yet those wielding absolute power displayed it lavishly. To show you have something precious in such abundance you can waste it, shows you have power. Appearance would be everything to a wasteland warlord.

It's what makes it a great movie actually...the plot is simple, no amazing plot twists. It's why I can re-watch a lot without being much less fun. The action, camera work, special effects, actors and directing is what makes it an amazing movie.

the whole flamethrowing guitarist bit with the drummers behind him is basically the post-apocalyptic equivalent of a military band marching their way to battle
Never go on an adventure without a bard.
That character is so cool. They actually had plans at one point to make a comic about his backstory. That mask he’s wearing is made from his own mothers skinned face and he is completely blind from birth. His name is “The Coma Doof Warrior” and that car is called “The Doof Wagon” (both named after Australian Doof parties). We never got a clear backstory because that comic never ended up being made but we have a couple of different versions of what it may have been. The first one comes from George Miller himself who says that he lived in an abandoned mine with his mother as a child, surviving off of rats. Immortan Joe was passing nearby the mine one day and heard him shredding on his guitar and took him in. The second one comes from iOTA (the Australian singer/songwriter who plays him in the movie). He says that he was a child prodigy at music, and that his mother was a musician as well. He grew up in a happy environment until they were attacked. His mother was taken away and a few days later someone dropped her severed head into his lap. Immortan Joe found him clutching her head and decided to take him in. The mask he wears has 2 plausible origins, those being that he either cut her face from her skull himself and made the mask, or that Joe did it and gave the mask to him so that he could help take revenge against the world while wearing his own mothers screaming face. I personally prefer iOTA’s version of the story better. Anyway he’s a super neat character and I wish they had made that comic because he is so cool and I love him.

There is very significant amount of CGI in this movie. It's kind of hilarious that they marketed it as "almost no CGI." There are CGI touchups on every single frame of this film. Every single one. But they at least built the cars practically, and performed many of the stunts practically. But I mean we're talking every single explosion is CGI, every single death at speed, every stunt that was too dangerous for real, every single frame with Furiosa's missing arm, the storms, all the way down to the gecko Max crushes at the beginning. This movie is like one step down from an Avengers level of CGI. They just happened to do awesome practical work on top of it.

If this was made by Disney and Marvel, the polecats would be fake, the peacemaker, Bigfoot, gigahorse, everything would be fake including the background. What they did with this movie was use a stunning amount of practical effects, and where they used cgi, it was difficult to notice. Because you cannot see good cgi. If you see cgi, then it didn’t do it’s job. I think a great example is the explosion of the People Eater. When they filmed it, they actually exploded the real vehicle, and in editing used cgi onto enhance the explosion to make it more spectacular. But because it was on top of practical effects, you wouldn’t know it was fake.
Also, I mean, cutting off an actress’s arm for a film probably isn’t okay with the unions, so I’ll def. give you that
I'd say that the sandstorm scene perfectly exemplifies that is not precisely realism what makes the difference when it comes to great or bad CGI, but rather the cinematic artistry. Granted the sand tornado was not the most realistic shot of the movie, but you can't deny it was DAMN awesome. And that's because the CGI was well supported by so much more! Perfect score, frame composition, the pacing, even the color palette. It all added up to create an amazing scene. It wasn't just plain and senseless CGI with no thought into it like Marvel or Kong or some crap like that.
The editing in this film is stellar. You never lose track of what’s happening in spite of all the movement and changing angles. Such a well made movie.

When u think about it, the guitar guy is actually the wasteland equivalent of a battle musician who commands the movements of an army with his beats. It makes sense that immortal joe use that since there are no more radios and that wasteland combat is all about vehicles and that involves LOUD noise. When I rewatch the movie, his songs are fast when chasing and when stopping, he slows down the song. The truck setup with multiple drummers and stereos to make sure everyone can hear over the noise is genius.

Action movies aren't a genre I like..I prefer drama, like historical boring as all hell drama. So when I watch action with my husband and sons it has to be well done, not just explosions for no reason. Mad Max was well written and well acted and well directed.

I am obsessed with the shot at 1:48 - the way the camera eases in from far off, but is keeping up to speed with the truck. It’s got such energy to it, like it immediately pumps you up.
Also that wasn’t enough, the motorcycle flipping over the camera is the cherry on top.
The fact they need all that just to stop a war rig goes to show on how resilient the rig is. Truly an amazing movie.

Nothing will ever bring me as much pure joy as watching any part of this movie. Everything and everyone is just so beautifully insane and entertaining.
Its mainly because the setting and the point of view characters are so well written it makes the action around them that more epic.

The Doofwarrior is the best part out of the whole movie. Funny enough, the guitarist who played that role revealed in an interview that he had fun and a bit trouble playing the flamethrower guitar (most of it was the design) but he did his best.
The sound mixing are next level in this movie! The best ive ever experienced. All the details, all the effects! EVERYTHING!

Something that no one seems to comment on is how in unison these guys are while fighting, they could've made them easy dumb cannon fodder like most films, but here they synchronise their attacks, swing on the cranes to save their guys if they can, it's fun to watch when you see people helping one another to survive and also be competent as well.
The real important thing to remember is the guitarist. He gets direct orders from Immortan Joe's vehicle crew. His chords literally tell all of the drivers which way to go and what to do.
Whether that be, take a left, or swarm the target and pincer it.
Without him, the Warboys would be relatively unmanagable being bloodthirsty for combat.

Love how this movie doesn't treat its audience like idiots. There's no awkward exposition dump telling the audience that when a war boy 'chromes up it means they're about to kamikaze, it just ducking shows you and knows you'll get it.
It's basically one of the greatest examples of "show, don't tell" no spoon fed exposition, it's all told through visuals perfectly

Furiosa was great. It could have lost about 15-20 minutes and I tihnk it would have helped the pacing, but I loved it. If you watch the behind the scene everyone has a purpose. The “guitar guy” is actually like a mobile command center immortal Joe was a veteran of the gas wars and needed to keep command of his man and so the guitar dude is actually insuring orders. Joe is also frail and weak and giving his a man an opportunity to use the resources he’s stockpiled and seeing him at the head of the pursuit gives him a bit of legitimacy.

It's the amount of detail. A lot of blockbuster CGI films will fill time with cloned armies and pixelated fog.
Real cinematography on display by someone who's craft wasn't rotted by generations of CGI reboots, remakes and nostalgia traps. It can be a movie about anything, but it can still be filmed in a beautiful and compelling way. Particularly if done so on real film.
