    I had a new beige/brown '62 Chevy Impala SS that had the 327 300 HP. Fairly decent car until it was stolen and wrecked 18 months later. I replaced it with a new all options red/black '63 Ford Galaxie XL 390 4 speed convertible from TASCA Ford in RI. I still have that car today and it's in near perfect showroom condition despite its age. Only driven during warm weather months. It's never been driven during winter months.

    I had a 79 403 T/A . I put headers , RV cam, Edelbrock intake , then replaced the dreadful 2.41 rear gears ( put in 3.70 gears ) and added a 700R4 trans - the car ran 14.0 @99 mph .
    Then I swapped to the W-31 Ralleye 350 heads and my best time was 13.4 @104. It also got 22 Mpg on the freeway . Great car - wished I kept it , but had a lot of fun from 1989-2002 .

Positractraction always worked, even when chirping the tires in 2nd 3rd & sometimes 4th. I never put slicks on, but i did end up cracking the Borg Warner T-10 transmission case in two. I street raced my car on the weekends as well as bracket racing Saturday and Sundays. That clunking noise in the rear end may have in fact caused many people to replace the rear end not realizing all that was needed was a fluid change or did not hear the clunking noise and end up destroying the axle. I my axle held up under all the racing I did, they were sufficient for mildly over stock mods 👌

    Four-barrel 327 Chevy cars were as common as dirt in the 1960's. You could never take beating one for granted though. Chevrolet made some screamer 327's, and you could never be sure which one you were running against, even in barges like this one. For most of the 1960's, 327's were the hot Chevy small block. 350's didn't appear until 1967, and they were only available in Camaros when they first came out. Nice video.

    Back in high school, 85/86, I had a 79 10th Anniversary Trans Am with a 400/4 speed. It had a whopping 21k miles on it when I got it. I put a better exhaust on it (true duals, no cat) and put some richer secondary metering rods in the carb. Other than that it was 100% stock. I raced it very regularly and it ran consistent 14.80s with a best of 14.70, all between 94 and 95 mph. Funny how close 2 cars can be even though they are 35 years apart.

    There were like 200k TA made that year. The reason the low number on TA 6.6 was because there were only so many Pontiac 400 engines left. And you could only get 4 speed with that.

      @randyrobey5643 Год назад

      Interesting fact.

    • @grand73am
      @grand73am 9 дней назад

      Actual TA production for 1979 was 117,108, which made 1979 the highest year for TA production in history, before or since. Pontiac was phasing out the Pontiac 400, so for 1979, they only had 8672 Pontiac 400's left from 1978 to sell, and they were only sold with a 4 speed, as you said. So there were 8672 TA 6.6 Trans Ams with 4 speeds sold in 79. He said 2917 in the video, but he did specify "t-top cars", so the rest were apparently hardtops. Those 79's were the last Pontiac 400 engines sold in a production car. Even the Olds 403, which became the standard engine for the 79 TA(due to there not being enough 400's left), was gone after 1979.

    the gears really matter. i have a 79 trans am, 403 but i modded it with number 5 heads and free flowing x pipe exhaust. better qjet and open scoop. best i did with 3 speed auto and the 2.41s was 14.8 at 95. but after i swapped a 3.23 ws6 axle i found in a junkyard. flat 14 all day at 99mph.

  • @SealofPerfection
    @SealofPerfection 4 года назад +7

    Gearing kept this one close. A smogged-up, low compression 400 that was several hundred LB's heavier was right there with an older, non-smog car that had 4.10's. And the T/A still ran more MPH. Guess they had to keep the gearing down to keep the fuel mileage up.
    It's amazing how far the smog equipment has come. Putting on a free-flowing exhaust got you low 14's on cars like that T/A. Gears some basic tuning would put you in the 13's with no problem. You could really wake one up with basic mods.

    I own four 1979 Trans Ams, one is a 10th Anniversary TA so its fully loaded. That thing cost over $10k when it was new. They all have the 403 and the 10th TA had 2.73 gears. The other three have 2.41s. That 10th is very heavy.. with an actual dual exhaust under the 10th TA it ran 14.7s in the 95mph range way back in 1987. Not bad for a bone stock 403 in a car that is heavier than 4000lbs empty, without the scoop even opened up. It won a lot of races back then, and it went around corners VERY well despite the tall 70 series BFGs I had on it. WS6 works a lot better than most people know. Also 145mph was like a Sunday drive, the faster you go in it the more stable it is, no floating like a Camaro. That was a seriously fun car to have when I was 18, its been sitting since 1988, but I plan to pull it out and rebuild it next year, and probably make that 403 put out some more grunt.
    An interesting thing? I put the wheels from the 10th on my 79 Formula with a 400 4 speed before I put a 455 in it, those 'turbo' rims are heavy, and they slowed the Formula by a full second in the 1/8th mile. The same thing happened with a 74 Formula 350, lost a full second in the 1/8th. I lightened the 79 Formula a lot, and with an iron head 455 pushing it into the mid 11s with a 3.42 gear, it still weighed 3700lbs empty. Now it has an aluminum headed 467 making over 700hp/tq in it and its been lightened a lot more, so its right at 3100lbs with me in it.. and I am kinda heavy. Ok i am really heavy. The T tops concern me though.. Might put all of that in either a tube car or the 71 Formula 400 I have sitting around. Yeah I have a few Firebirds. They used to be dirt cheap.

      For the fun toy version the 700hp Butler engine would go in it, maybe with an IAII based 535 under the top end... for science, and a built overdrive trans pushing 2.41 gears, because why not? The amount of grunt that engine is making with just a 1050 on it is kinda ludicrous. Switch to 3.42/3.55 gears for drag racing.
      Then I can take the 70, put in a healthy 400 or 455 with iron heads and have a nice simple mid 10 second bracket/no prep ride.

    In 1973, when I was still 15 yrs old, my Grandma bought me my first car...a 1964 Impala SS, 327 4 barrel, Powerglide transmission, (w/center console and floor shift of course), Baby Blue w/chrome reverse wheels & baby moon caps, ...it was a one owner car when I got it. She paid $575 for it.
    Talk about a Christmas to remember!!! After a while though, I didn't appreciate what I had. The parking lot at school was filled with cars such as SS 396s, 383s, 440s, 289s, 283s, 389s, lots of fast 350s of every GM product you can imagine...even an SS 350 Chevelle! I don't remember any hemis but there probably were a few.
    Anyway, you don't know what you got till it's gone. I sure wish I had it now!
    I don't know, I never timed it, but I'd bet my ass it was quicker than this one. I outran my share of muscle cars....lots of 350s, 351s, a Boss 302 Mustang w/ headers that I remember beating twice lol. Thank goodness he was a friend, he was super pissed lol...he hit another guy in the face for laughing about it lol.
    Those were the good ole days and I miss 'em. I hope Heaven has a 1970s section that we can all hang out in.

    The reason the numbers are low for a TA 6.6 powered TA is that Pontiac only stockpile a certain numbers of 400 engines for the 1979 run. The last 400 was built in 1978 engine run. They wanted to reserve all the 400 that were slated for the 10th anniversary 1979 TAs. Why they didn't offer the TA 6.6 in the Turbo 350 in 1979 is beyond me.

    There were fewer 400 engines available for 1979 because GM stockpiled them from the 1978 model year, and priority was given to LE and SE cars first as they were high profit. Cannot compare these two cars really as the Trans Am had to meet emission standards, the Chevrolet did not. If you uncorked the Trans Am, I think you would see the numbers improve.

    I had a 79 T/A 6.6 litre (403 Olds). I ordered a T/A 6.6 4 speed in June of ‘78 and when it came in around March of 79 the dealer pulled a fast one and raised the price (totally illegal, I had a deposit and contract). They didn’t contact me and I checked regularly bec it was unusually a long time to wait. As it turned out they were only going to get one or the most two with the 400 Pontiac (T/A 6.6) so they wanted over list price. They got mine because I ordered it so early. All others came with 403 bec Pontiac wasn’t making the 400 anymore, they only had 2000, basically left over from ‘78. I was only 27 and didn’t know much and let them get away with it and just let it go and got the 403 auto from another dealer (I was a jerk for letting them do that to me). Happened to be same color, Mayan red, as in the video. 185 hp but rated 385 torque at low rpm. Max hp was at 3600 rpm. It was basically a Olds station wagon engine made for that platform and large 98 and 88 olds sedans. It ran out of breathe at about 85, however decent acceleration for the times. After getting smoked by a 79 302 Mustang after 85, I took the catalytic converter off and opened the fake hood scoop, put leaded gas in it and it brought it to life in the high speed range. That would’ve beat that mustang and it did beat a ‘79 Z28 on the top end that I happened to race.

      The main reason your 79 Olds 403 TA was slower was because the standard rearend ratio in your car was 2.41. Excellent for highway driving and mileage, but not so good on take off. So, I'd bet all those other cars had better rear gear ratios than yours, since you can't get worse than 2.41's for racing. Change out your rear gears to something like 3.42's or higher number, and you'd see a big difference. Your brother's 75 TA 455 5 speed could not be original, since they didn't come with 5 speeds in 1975, only 4 speeds.

    Did the Impala have a bobble head doggie on the rear window deck?

    I've had both cars. They are completely different animals. Chevy had nothing in 1979 to match the bigger engined Pontiac, but the Vette & Camaro were close. The Chevy had an upgraded 4.10 rear, while the TA was stock. Had he upgraded the gears also, it wouldn't be a race. Much of the extra weight is emissions equipment, which was non-existent in '64. My '81 TA ran low 15's when I got it, but by then the auto manufacturers had given up on engines & tuning, & were focused exclusively on style & fuel economy. I'm hoping to see 12's next year, with a few upgrades to my factory turbo 301. I too am partly here for the incredible flatulence!

    That 79 trans am - fully optioned, with the Pontiac or olds V8 is a 3900 lb car WITHOUT driver.

    Always thought of the Chevy 327 as one of their better Motors. To move a big boat like that to those ETS and MPH is really impressive. Even though it's lighter than the Trans Am there's a lot more mass to move.

    Kudos to the Impala for being able to shift the stock shifter.

    That TA has all the right curves but that Impala knows how to make biscuits and gravy and brother I'm all about the biscuits and gravy.

    Hey I worked on the Pontiac cars in a dealership. They are what I call plastic cars. The compression ratio what a joke ! I squeezed some extra hp out of a 305 cid when I rebuilt it 84 Trans am . It had twin tbi swirl port intake manifold cowl induction . Oh yeah glory days . I was always sweet on the 77 trans am 400 4 speed screaming eagle on the hood .

    I had two of those trans Ams. When I got my first one people made fun of me and I said “ hey, I’m gonna get a bj in this car you just wait” and I did get one, and she became my wife. Good looking woman too. I’d rank her as an olds cutlass supreme 455 sx car. Classy but badass with still plenty of muscle under the hood and a great looking rear end if you know what I mean... reliable too and doesn’t come with daddy issues like a mopar. Actually still married too her and I guess you could say she’s my daily.
