I remember a late summer afternoon some years ago in a tent in New Hampshire, you introduced this song as your parents' favorite and then you sang it a cappella. Not a sound other than your perfect clear tenor and an occasional sniff from someone deeply affected by the words. it was so touching and so very beautiful. I'm sure your parents heard you that day. I have attended many Remembrance Day ceremonies at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto and John has sung "Danny Boy" for the veterans there during the ceremony. The ceremony alone is a sombre one in which the hospital acknowledges the sacrifice of our veterans of war but when John sings Danny Boy, I am left sobbing every time. John has such passion for wanting to help our veterans and he has done so much for Sunnybrook Hospital and the veterans who live there. He is a saint of a man. God Bless you, Mr. McDermott
I choke up every time I hear this song. From time to time, I need to feel its simple and melancholic beauty. With this one, I've heard three versions by Mr. McDermott (two lives, one studio recording); still undecided which one I prefer, no doubt he is my singer of choice. P. S.: I'm Argentinean, from italian and spanish background. This speaks to my heart though.
@@johnmcdermotttenor My Dad, who was a decorated British WWII veteran, loved your songs. He was a beautiful tenor in his own right, and performed the Last Rose of Summer, as well as Waltzing Matilda. I remember my Uncle Len, also a WWII veteran visiting us in Canada, and playing for him your Waltzing Matilda.. He dissolved in tears. Your incredible interpretations have had more impact then you know. God Bless

The understated instrumentation with guitar and mandolin combined with your great, authentic voice was by far my favorite. Of course, we weren't nearly as good as you, but it was fun to play the piece.
John thank you for the comfort of your wonderful voice during difficult times for me .I’m Rosarie from west cork Ireland by the way i keep going back to the song the old man since bereavement came my way last December 22 and this song is wonderful also ,I look up your songs and singing as they give me great hope for the future .Thank you so much .❤🇮🇪☘️
