Those opening notes are so in touch with the essence of 3 Billboards and its themes of grief, depression and redemption. It's so rare that a director can match a song with their film so perfectly.
January 2, 2001 this version by Renee was playing on my car radio as I drove home minutes after hearing my mother had just passed away. I cried like a baby and each time I hear it brings a tear to my eye.
Absolutely beautiful. The opening to one of the best Movies produced for years. Head and shoulders above all the tripe coming out of Hollywood of late.
Tis the last rose of summer, Left blooming alone; All her lovely companions Are faded and gone; No flower of her kindred, No rosebud is nigh, To reflect back her blushes, Or give sigh for sigh. I'll not leave thee, thou lone one! To pine on the stem; Since the lovely are sleeping, Go, sleep thou with them. Thus kindly I scatter, Thy leaves o'er the bed, Where thy mates of the garden Lie scentless and dead. So soon may I follow, When friendships decay, And from Love's shining circle The gems drop away. When true hearts lie withered, And fond ones are flown, Oh! who would inhabit This bleak world alone?
One of the most beautiful songs in the world. I played it on violin when I was 13 and still sing this in public several times. Thomas Moore had such a tragic life--his wife and children pre-deceased him. In his old age, he could not perform due to failing health.
+Bandsman Pat must agree. I started with the old scratchy Amelita Galli Curci 1927 recording on a 78 - high art! It cycled over to Joan Southerland - delicately virtuosic. Then comes Renee. Wow.
This is inarguably a beautiful voice and a beautiful rendition. Still, (in my opinion) this is not the best version I have ever heard. I realize opinions differ.
This was one of my late fathers favorite song. The lyric of this song is so hauntingly beautiful and sad. Now it has become one of my very favorite song of all time. To me this song symbolizes the sadness of losing loved ones forever to time.
@@maritaberndt6200 We are kindred spirit aren’t we. I salute both of our fathers. I’m drinking a glass of Perseco right now in honor of your father and mine. May they rest in God’s loving arms.

Such a moving piece of music. And the way it's used in 3 Billboards... Gosh I had tears in my eyes. It reminds me of that scene in Shawshank Redemption when Andy Dufresne put a piece of The Marriage of Figaro in the prison : it had the exact same effect on me.
The song was also used in the classic film Gaslight, where it is said to be the signature song of the Ingrid Bergman character's dead aunt, an opera/concert star. It comes back several times: a passing organ grinder, the sinister husband's piano playing, variations in the orchestral score, etc.
RF's intensity drives this song from light opera into a new level, a moving reflection on beauty and death. Check out her superb rendering of Strauss' Fourth last Song 'Im Abentrot' for another superb performance.
Also used wonderfully in "Capitalism: A Love Story" (Roosevelt Mourning and an exceptionally great narration by Michael Moore). Can't help, always crying.

This gives me chills. I always associate this song with Oshin, the song Shunsaku plays on his harmonica and teaches to Oshin 😢 one of the most unforgettable and tender moments
This is from the poem written by Thomas Moore (1779-1852). 'TIS THE LAST ROSE OF SUMMER 'TIS the last rose of summer, Left blooming alone ; All her lovely companions Are faded and gone ; No flower of her kindred, No rose-bud is nigh, To reflect back her blushes, Or give sigh for sigh. I'll not leave thee, thou lone one ! To pine on the stem ; Since the lovely are sleeping, Go sleep thou with them. Thus kindly I scatter Thy leaves o'er the bed, Where thy mates of the garden Lie scentless and dead. So soon may I follow, When friendships decay, And from Love's shining circle The gems drop away. When true hearts lie wither'd, And fond ones are flown, Oh ! who would inhabit This bleak world alone ?
The tune and lyrics originally Irish but best known to opera lovers through its incorporation into the Italian language opera "Martha" by von Flotow who was German but wrote operas in Italian. An equally beautiful aria in that opera is "M'appari" - "As in a dream" a favorite of tenors like Gigli and many others. The "Last rose of summer" melody is taken up by the chorus and constitutes a kind of musical motif throughout the opera.
I have to see the opera Martha by Flotow someday. Renee has Incredible control and power, and yes, the tempo is slow, but the voice is very beautiful and evenly held through every long and slow phrase, yes, it does bring a tear to the eye to hear something as beautiful as this, so masterfully done. The famous tenor aria in Martha is beautiful too
Lyrics of The Last Rose of Summer (1805 by Irish poet Thomas Moore) ‘Tis the last rose of summer, left blooming alone All her lovely companions are faded and gone No flower of her kindred, no rose bud is nigh To reflect back her blushes and give sigh for sigh I'll not leave thee, thou lone one to pine on the stem Since the lovely are sleeping, go sleep thou with them Thus kindly I scatter thy leaves o'er the bed Where thy mates of the garden lie scentless and dead. @protoville Deanna's version is indeed the most ethereal and sparkling one I've ever heard. As for the pathos, Ponselle's is unmatched (her 1937 radio broadcast version is on YT).
I have to disagree with those who feel that Deeana Durbin's version is better. To me, there is no comparison. Listen to the powerful emotions in this version by Ms. Fleming. A great singer can only do this. Such control!!!
Martha Anne Durbin's is very good; this is great. There's a huge span between the two plateaus. Neither are the voices comparable. This is a great voice, not "really good," not "fine," but GREAT. She has by far, to me, the best voice of all the female classical singers I've heard singing today.
Martha Anne I love both singers. Deanna has such simplicity and purity of tone. Renee has that fullness and maturity and warmth of tone. Both are so beautiful in their own right. :)
I think I much prefer Deanna's version, though I admit to being somewhat biased with it comes to Deanna. I just prefer the simplicity and as the poster above said, purity of tone she brings. To me she presents this beautiful melody perfectly, I don't think it requires embellishment... I think we must also remember the huge advances in recording technology between now and when Deanna was performing. The older recordings don't capture the fullness of the voice so well. I think there's little doubt how highly those who heard Deanna live rated her.
Oh, yes, I think that Rosa Ponselle might even be the best. But then, again, I think that the melodrama presented by Renee Fleming is incredible and the most poignant by far. She almost has a catch in her voice !
Ponselle -- unmatched artistry -- though this version is beautifully done. It's just that you start with Ponselle and work down from there. There's no question that Fleming's is a great voice, however.
@PonselleLover--Thank you for your comment. Rosa Poselle was one of the greatest. She lived not too far from here. I can't remember the name of her estate. It was "Villa" something or other. My wife was a private-duty nurse and met her and saw her estate.
Thank you for your comment. I agree about the difference in presentation. If you saw the version where Deanna sings seated in a chair, it's a scene from a movie. The older man in the scene is her father. He has surprised his daughter by asking her to sing for him. When she finishes he's going to tell her her voice is "no good," that he's taking her out of music school. His reason: to keep her away from a young man who attends that school. That's why he looks so miserable. He loves her voice.
Those opening notes are so in touch with the essence of 3 Billboards and its themes of grief, depression and redemption. It's so rare that a director can match a song with their film so perfectly.
This movie had it all...Acting, Story Line, Soundtrack....It was a perfect movie...One of Hollywood's few.
“Good luck to you Jason. Your a decent man, and yeah, you’ve had a run of bad luck, but things are gonna change for you. I can feel it”

I was nailed to my chair when I saw the openings scene in a film festival in our local cinema, when hearing this song!
Absolutely beautiful. The opening to one of the best Movies produced for years. Head and shoulders above all the tripe coming out of Hollywood of late.
The McDobagh brothers are just the best
Tis the last rose of summer,
Left blooming alone;
All her lovely companions
Are faded and gone;
No flower of her kindred,
No rosebud is nigh,
To reflect back her blushes,
Or give sigh for sigh.
I'll not leave thee, thou lone one!
To pine on the stem;
Since the lovely are sleeping,
Go, sleep thou with them.
Thus kindly I scatter,
Thy leaves o'er the bed,
Where thy mates of the garden
Lie scentless and dead.
So soon may I follow,
When friendships decay,
And from Love's shining circle
The gems drop away.
When true hearts lie withered,
And fond ones are flown,
Oh! who would inhabit
This bleak world alone?
Thank you
In this sometimes cruel world, I think we should thank god/the universe that the McDonagh brothers were born.
One of the most beautiful songs in the world. I played it on violin when I was 13 and still sing this in public several times. Thomas Moore had such a tragic life--his wife and children pre-deceased him. In his old age, he could not perform due to failing health.
The irish are so proud of this song and renee preforms it beautifully and does it so much justice :)
an immortal song. Renee Fleming sings with such tenderness
I’ve watched the movie three times and see something new each time. Great movie!
One of my all time favourite Irish songs sung enchantingly by the supremely talented Rene Fleming.
indeed...brings tears. Greetings from Melb
sometimes the music contained in the poetry is powerful enough to bring us to our knees. Fleming is perfect.
Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri..what a voice.what a voice.what a voice. Heaven
3 billboards brought me here... This voice.. Keeps me here.. One word only.. Beautiful x
This movie is so good. And the music is even better.
Renee never ceases to amaze me. I am in awe. Sublime in every sense of the word.
Here because of Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri
Mackenly Parmelee me too. What a great way to start a film... I felt in love with that scene when this song started ^^
I didn't think the movie could get better after the opening --- but somehow it did.
Mackenly Parmelee same. .. such a beautiful and moving song. 😊
Mackenly Parmelee meeee.. The opening scene
Me Too
This is wonderful it eclipses all other versions I have heard.
Must be amongst the best renditions.
One of the most simple yet elegant songs ever composed. Along with Danny Boy and The Irish Blessing what more is needed? Beautiful rendition Renee!
Juste sublime ... j'adore cette voix magique, qui me transporte... Et quel film! Fabuleux avec des acteurs brillantissimes. Inoubliable 🙏🙏🙏
Sometimes I watch a movie for the story, sometimes for the music, sometimes for the acting. I watched 3 Billboards for it all.
omg soooooo beautiful. Thank you God for Renee Fleming's incredible sound. She made me start listening to opera :-)
Listening and crying 💜
Love from France 💚

Great voice! I like this tempo, slow but so magic...Hi from Italy.
ไพเราะมากค่ะทั้งบทประพันธุ์ที่คลาสสิกลึกซึ้ง และการร้องที่ไม่ใช่ใครก็จะร้องได้ดีมากอย่างนี้ Thank you for sharing❤
I'm here from 3 billboard a ebbing Missouri... I say, i don't have faith but i admit just now i heard an angel
She also did a wonderful job on this beautiful song.
Magnifique ! 😢😢

3 Billboards should have won best picture. What a great performance by Kathleen McDormett and Sam Rockwell who walked home with Emmy's.

Because through love comes calm. And through clam comes thought. And you need thought to detect stuff sometimes, Jason.

"Be still and know that I am God"
beautiful with beautiful song
