Most criticism of Jonas always seems to be from men. One can only assume it is jealousy of his remarkable talent and movie star good looks that compels them to disparage his work, which somehow makes them feel better about their own personal inadequacies.
it's not just his great voice, it's the passion he puts into his role - the obsessive, possessive, tortured soul. He takes us on the journey with him - brilliantly!
Magnifique artiste. Splendide chanteur. Bravo Jonas ! Bravissimo !
Kaufmann's voice is clearly not to everyone's taste. Its heavier with more baritonal sound then some care for in a tenor. No he's not Corelli or Bjorling, or even Bergonzi. He is however the greatest tenor of his generation (an argument could also be made for Alagna). I personally don't share reservations about Kaufmann. He has four things I wish for in a singer in a staged opera, a good voice, appropriate appearance, acting ability, and most importantly, he communicates the meaning of the text, not just producing a series of pretty sounds. An opera performance isn't tested against some "ideal" standard, its tested by its audience. Here the audience is clearly more then satisfied. But, then each to their own taste.
A gorgeous song - the best fruit of Monsieur Bizet's outpourings, and given a knockout performance here. Jonas Kaufmann's skill is flawless and his reputation well deserved.
Holy Mary Mother of God! In the Golden Chain of the best opera, this man is unique and extraordinary. The Holy Trinity of natural beauty, technique, and interpretation. Oh God, I can die now, having heard this miracle....
Vielen Dank Herr Kaufmann
Some of the comments on here are bizarre. How many of the people commenting on this have spent months / years studying the role and then successfully sung Don José at all, let alone hundreds of performances in major houses around the world with mixed acoustics, large orchestras, incredible personal stress and after punishing rehearsal schedules? Not many I'll bet. Saying that an aria sung by a vocal athlete of this calibre is "awful" is unbelievably ignorant and saddening. For all those that are comparing him to old recordings of turn of the 20th century tenors, just consider that when those recordings were made, most of the lower overtones disappeared in the old recording methods, and they were sped up to fit on old LPs etc. The voices sounded thinner and more direct on recording. So it's very difficult to know what Caruso, Gigli etc really sounded like in relation to Kaufmann. Its perfectly possible Caruso sounded similar. One can like or dislike it, but saying it's awful or trying to comment on a technique / muscle process he's spent 30 years developing and one knows absolutely nothing about is a stretch...
Alexander Grove As a consumer of opera we’re entitled to critically evaluate a performance. Just because we can’t do It doesn’t mean we’re not entitled to form an opinion. Other consideration is that authenticity is highly prized. Kaufman is excellent. He’s a genius but the interpretation is not satisfactory. He’s got the ‘it’ factor but the current fashion for singers who look like matinee idols is rather commercial. Here he is too heroic. Don Jose is the beta male Escamillo is the alpha male. Kaufman sings Don Jose like a heroic tenor. The interpretation needs to suggest more of the weak sentiment of a fawning moon calf. Yes it’s a concert performance but if you can’t believe it, you simply can’t believe it.
I like what he did at 3:28 (Et j'étais une chose á toi). The only other tenor who I know ends it with a softer head voice for dramatic effect is Carreras. It sounds so perfect!
It's interesting how people compare voices and then deem them good or bad. Beauty is not in the eye of the beholder when classifying tonal range. I like many artists who have bad technique but an amazing instrument (Lanza), Kaufman is a Dramatic or Tone tenor like Caruso, Franco Corelli or Mario Del Monaco and Because of far superior recording and more sensitive instruments for catching all tones, kaufman seems to have darker notes then the above. Not as good as Gedda = he's not very good, which is not fair or true. Kaufman is what he is, enjoy him while he is still active. Also, I think the statement "Baritone throat/Tenor Chords" is not even the tip of the iceberg. I'm sure Compte Monsuer was just giving an abridged opinion. The DNA and god thing is a little far reaching for me, an Atheist.
No, he is not a "great singer". This is too little. He is a God of Music! His total sincerity, his deep understanding of every musical phrase or harmony, his royal style, his greatness, his tenderness, his soul move me into tears of joy and emotion...
He reminds me so much of Dietrich Fischer Dieskau. Brilliant musician? Yes. Beautiful sound? Clearly. But I have a feeling that any tenor trying to copy him would be in a World of pain.
My first reaction is to exclaim that he is the greatest tenor of all time. But I have to control myself. I'll settle for the greatest tenor alive for now. I may have to revise that assessment back to 'of all time'. Pretty damn great. BTW I'm digitizing all of Carmen.
Dommage ! Cependant, cette prestation est malgré tout excellente ! Bravo !
The video doesn't do justice to how he sounds in the opera house. Thankfully, I had the pleasure of listening to him at the Met. Simply magnificent. There is a reason the big houses want him to sing.
Beschissene Synchronität! Kaufmann: perfetto! Bewundernswert: das "echte", auf- und abschwellbare pianissimo! Dazu braucht Herr Kaufmann kein Falsett-Gequietsche!
Most criticism of Jonas always seems to be from men. One can only assume it is jealousy of his remarkable talent and movie star good looks that compels them to disparage his work, which somehow makes them feel better about their own personal inadequacies.

Qu3 maravilla...
For me the most beautiful love aria in the world of Opera ..And Jonas Kaufmann the best Voice ..👏👏👏👏👏...
Magnifique artiste. Splendide chanteur.
Bravo Jonas ! Bravissimo !
Carmen - my favorite opera + Kaufmanm - my favorite tenor = an unexcelled experience

Merci !!!
I'm am almost 70 year old woman and Jonas makes me "giddy", like a teenager.
Ray Ring a mí también, tengo 77...

Jonas is perfect, as usual! Thank you so much for sharing this.
A gorgeous song - the best fruit of Monsieur Bizet's outpourings, and given a knockout performance here. Jonas Kaufmann's skill is flawless and his reputation well deserved.
this is the best tenor of the wolrd!!!he has a beautiful big piano voice!
i love jonas kaufmann!!!
And I love Jonas so much...His absolutely top!!
Absolutely beautiful also the orchestral bacground
In my opinion, this is Kaufy's best role.
Quelle voix merveilleuse, quelle technique vocale Époustouflant. Merci Jonas.

Holy Mary Mother of God! In the Golden Chain of the best opera, this man is unique and extraordinary. The Holy Trinity of natural beauty, technique, and interpretation. Oh God, I can die now, having heard this miracle....
Bravissimo! Jonas is fantastic and is brilliant here.
Bravo, Jonas. Gefühlvoller als Gedda und Wunderlich. Danke!
That was exquisite. He surely has never sung it better. The conducting of Simon Rattle has everything to do with this.
No es exquisito
I think Bizet has more to do with it, it’s such a powerful composition that I find is hard to miss, having it played a few times!

Grandissimo Jonas
I like what he did at 3:28 (Et j'étais une chose á toi). The only other tenor who I know ends it with a softer head voice for dramatic effect is Carreras. It sounds so perfect!
Listen also to Nicolai Gedda's recordings for a good example of this.
Gedda is amazing. Such a gorgeous voice.
Heber Diaz 1:14 that sound
What? That was shit😂😂😂😂😂
So does Jon Vickers
Perfect beautiful performance.
Fake dramatic tenor voice
Bellísima Aria, magistral interpretación vocal y musical..¡¡¡

O zo wonderlijk mooi,!.dank je Jonas! Onvergetelijk!

Jonas, stunning as always. Thank you for uploading!

Baritones dont have top notes like that!
Yes amazing, great performance....bravo Jonas...
OMG! I am speachless!
OMG !!!! that je"aime !!!!! incroyable!!!!!!

🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹💯💯💯💯💥💥🙏🙏💥🙏🙏🙏❤
He sings with such perfection and passion, no wonder why he is considered one of the best tenors of the 21st century ( and he is sooooo handsome) :)
Just beautiful.
Bellisimo

On dirait retrouver l’interprétation de John vickers bravo!!!
The Best of the Best!!!! Besides he is a great actor, you can see he is feeling what he sing, and gorgeous looking. The full package.

Beschissene Synchronität! Kaufmann: perfetto! Bewundernswert: das "echte", auf- und abschwellbare pianissimo! Dazu braucht Herr Kaufmann kein Falsett-Gequietsche!
Great!!
Jonas Kaufman is the only tenor whom I have heard in my life who sounds like a baritone.
Così si canta sotto la doccia. Ascoltare del Monaco al Bolshoi 1959.
