I have seen other performances, with great singers, but they stay away, never touch or look at each other ,never express feeelings . Kaufmann and Aldrich convey emotions and sentiment ,one can believe they are actually in love. And we , in turn, also fall in love with them. Thank you for giving so much to us. E non mi venga a parlare di distinzione tra tenore di grazia e tenore lirico spinto: un tenore canta la sua tonalità in qualunque scrittura, se sa davvero cantare. Può variare il timbro e il volume ma non la capacità di tenere la tessitura. Mi faccia sapere quando Kaufmann farà Ernesto oppure Nemorino, lo ascolterò volentieri.

Totally agree. He sings La Fleur on his new L'Opera CD. Slightly different from this version - perhaps more exasperation, less sensual/erotic - studio recording without Carmen (or audience) present. That is one of his best attributes - never the same way twice, always in the moment expression and interpretation.
I think Jonas has the same attributes as Nicolai Gedda whom we lost a few months ago. Leopold Simoneau was also very flexible that way fonsidering his era. In my books, Jonas is right now one of the best tenors in the world if he can only take care of his fantastic voice, he is still very young. Yes, I grew to love opera as a teen and collegiate from recordings and Gedda was a favorite. Your comment prompted me to reread his obituary in Opera News that recalled, "warm, sweet, silvery beauty of his voice," and "unshowy but dazzling technical virtuosity that was invariably in the service of the music." In Kaufmann I think we also see "service of the drama". I think it is the combination of serving the music AND the drama that will save opera for the future. I wish I could have seen Gedda live. I have read & heard he was a natural albeit subtle actor.
Yes N.J. Mr Gedda was indeed a subtle actor but a very humble man abeit a perfectionist. Son Voltaire etait tout simplement sublime mais il avait toujours peur de faire des fautes . That's what I heard him say on French t.v. when asked about his ease for learning languages. I was lucky enough to see and hear him in Munich in april 1968 in a Gala performance when he sang ( Je crois entendre encore ) a voice so smooth and silky and yet well defined and contoured despite the not so good acoustic then in that Museum. The man seemed to stand so tall in a way that demanded respect from admirers like me. And you're right about Kaufmann's combination of serving the music and the drama saving opera for the future because we have all seen so many changes over the past decades that were not always good, I know that I have once in a while been very disappointed in many aspects of those inevitable transitions. Now, regarding ( La fleur ) I just wanted to add that Kate's reaction to Jonas's singing was just out of this world specially the last 3 or so minutes, outstanding and with good reasons. But, very important to remember HE IS ACTING ALSO...Don Jose is caressing Carmen. It isn't Jonas and it isn't the actress. In the Voigt book I he talks about the "problem" of taking it personal and how he lets it go "the first time" but if it continues, he rushes to clear things up. It is all part of acting and the thin "permeable membrane" that separates the act-or/ress from the wo-/man.

I video restituiscono solo in parte e forse anche minima la realtà, così che esprimere un’opinione obiettiva, che peraltro nessuno richiede, è difficile. Kaufmann secondo me è un caso strano di emissione perché sembra oscillare tra la gola stretta e la nasalità. Sicuramente non è la voce ampia, libera e piena e allo stesso tempo timbrata negli armonici come dovrebbe essere (vedi Franco Corelli), tuttavia possiede un certo fascino perché la capacità di risuonare della timbrica scura esiste comunque. Osserviamo attentamente: perché la voce nelle vocali emesse da lui e da lei sono così diverse? Perché le "e" di Kaufmann e anche le altre vocali, sono così strette? A causa dell'impostazione che invece di lasciare la risonanza del petto ben aperto saldata a quella superiore, pure aperta per evitare di essere nasali, è spinta consapevolmente nella sola zona di maschera. È così che si stringe la gola e si perde anche l'integrità dell'appoggio. Bene il Sib finale a mezza voce dove, per eseguirlo, ha modificato l'imposto. Sarà per questo che dopo (beato lui) ha passato mezz'ora a baciarla? Alla fine non rimane che il gradimento personale: mi piace/non mi piace. La nostra disgrazia è che viviamo un’ ipersimulazione (realtà virtuale) sempre più spinta, a discapito dell’esperienza diretta, così che alla fine crediamo di sapere e invece siamo sempre più ignoranti e disorientati.

I like him, bur I'm sorry to say his acting is better than his singing. Too throaty for my taste. The stage seems to be awful, as is usual nowadyas.
