Composers: Music: Thomas Moore, 1779-1852
From: The Flying Dutchman 2004

Lyrics: Sir John Stevenson, 1761-1833.
---
Tis the last rose of summer,
Left blooming alone,
All her lovely companions
Are faded and gone.
No flow'r of her kindred
No rosebud is nigh
To reflect back her blushes,
Or give sigh for sigh.
I'll not leave thee, thou lone one,
To pine on the stern,
Since the lovely are sleeping,
Go, sleep thou with them
Thus kindly I'll scatter
Thy leaves o'er the bed,
Where thy mates of the garden
Lie scentless and dead.
So soon may I follow
When friendships decay;
And from love's shining circle
The gems drop away
When true hearts lie wither'd
And fond ones are flow'n
Oh! Who would inhabit
This bleak world alone?
The most beautiful Irish song !

Beyond the beautiful music and talented singers, please let us not forget the fantastic flutist Teun Ramaekers, a fellow student of conductor Rieu during their music academy days. Teun has been the chief flutist in this orchestra for at least 15 years.

Yes he is the best, they have known each other for 50 years
I couldn't agree more with what you said The voice of Susan adds a special touch to the music Teun is also brilliant when he plays the Pan flute to the lonely shepherd
I agree 100 percent Susan adds the extra beauty to the music Well said
Wow people who compose these songs should live forever!
The Last Rose of Summer is an Irish poem written in 1805 by Irish poet Thomas Moore.
That beautiful melody goes back into the ancient mists of Ireland. What a performance this is. It just runs in your head all day
Glad you pointed that out

So beautiful song.
Kerkrade

The Last Rose Of Summer .
Lau Avon
Lau Avon
Lau Avon
Suzan Erens voice is non-comparable. You simply could not find a better one.
Absolutely beautiful, Suzan has an exquisite voice, a great loss to the JSO but is now married to Pierre, Andre's son, and they have 2 children. A truly great, moving performance, thank you all.
+1504trevor My error then, I read somewhere that they were married. Clearly that was incorrect. Apologies for that error.
This is a beautiful song and most of all, played by orchestra of Andre Rieu and sung by Susan

this is so beautifull! I was borne in belfast 1944
Sir Thomas Moore would have be proud his poem was sung so beautifully.
Unworldly, does Robert Burns proud. Splendid venue with great classical singers. It would have been a night to remember to have been there. Everybody was looking good. Splendid.
What the hell does Robbie Burns have to do with it? It was written by an Irish poet named Thomas Moore.
Holy hannah! I didn't even realize 4 minutes went by! What a beautiful performance.
Thank you. it's such a beautiful song and nice to have all the verses.

Amazing!
The Last Rose of Summer is a poem by the Irish poet Thomas Moore. He wrote it in 1805, while staying at Jenkinstown Park in County Kilkenny, Ireland, where he was said to have been inspired by a specimen of Rosa 'Old Blush'. [1] The poem is set to a traditional tune called "Aislean an Oigfear", or "The Young Man's Dream",[2] which was transcribed by Edward Bunting in 1792, based on a performance by harper Denis Hempson (Donnchadh Ó hÁmsaigh) at the Belfast Harp Festival.[3] The poem and the tune together were published in December 1813 in volume 5 of Thomas Moore's A Selection of Irish Melodies. The original piano accompaniment was written by John Andrew Stevenson, several other arrangements followed in the 19th and 20th century.

Edward Bunting is credited with transcribing this beautiful melody in 1792 based on a performance by harper Donnchadh Ó hÁmsaigh (Denis Hempson) at the Belfast Harp Festival. The Poem and the tune together were published in December 1813 . The original flowing piano accompaniment was written by John Andrew Stevenson. I have no doubt all four subscribers would be proud of this Fabulous rendition of their legacy..

I love this because it is so beautiful. I recently watched a 1954 movie Twenty-Four Eyes about a Japanese teacher and her 12 students over about a 15 year period before and after WWII and the heartbreak of war and loss, including a third of her class, her husband and young daughter. The Last Rose was played at the girls funeral. Most touching!
Another favorite of mine. Love it.

Bravo Suzan ! Brilliant voise and performance in this lovely Irish ballad.Like this last year rose blooms in loneliness, so I probably do not want to live in such a sad and lonely world.
And another year has past since my baby sister died. To add ,it is now 1 year since mom has died. This song I dedicated to my baby sister Alice and now to you mom... it seems like it was only yesterday. :-( .. Thank you Andre Rieu and JSO. for giving expression to my feelings and loss. Also thank you Susan for sharing your beautiful voice.
Oh that's bad, I wish you strength to get through this hard time :(
