    I live in the Netherlands. To hear this from people from other countries makes me happy. My dad and my mom both had a full time job while growing up. My dad at night and my mom during the day. So i saw them both a lot. Now my dad is working part time so he can do more fun stuff. Its weird to hear thats not normal in other countries

    One thing that is worth mentioning is that next to the equality there is also the discussion of whether men and women actually want the same things. Being equal doesn't mean you're the same. So there is a bit of a stress point between on the one hand getting more women into certain jobs but on the other hand not all women necessarily wanting to do those jobs. I'm Dutch by the way but I think that it's important that women shouldn't be forced to do jobs just so we can put a number on equality. Both men and women should have the same options and opportunities but I think it would go too far if we started forcing people into jobs or choices they don't actually want to make. That's why I'm against this idea of 50/50 in every job because some jobs you will have more women and some you will have more men. We just need to make sure that the reasons for that difference are a matter of personal choice and not because of a lack of opportunity.

    Research in Norway shows that the more the genders have equal opportunity the more gender specific choices in education and jobs become. Care is a career mostly choosen by women and engineering mostly by men, given a free choice. So the end of the video "we are not there yet" seems nonsensical to me because we have not defined where we want to be. To me it should be that we want people to have a free choice independent of gender. True equality is not possible because of biological and cultural gender differences, but I believe we have attained the highest level possible in freedom of choice.

      Perhaps the pay gab will be closed when men start to work more parttime as well. The pay gab for women in higher educated jobs is a bit weird since usually you are able to set the salary you want. If I was a woman I think I would just tell in job interview you want the same salary as a man in that position. If that is a problem then this is probably not the company for you....

    • @stelpie
      @stelpie 4 года назад +8

      In my opinion Jelle is spot on with this comment. At least in the Western world. You can not add all the salaries of men together and then add all the salaries of women together divide them by the number of people in each group and say see there is a difference. It doesn't work that way. You have to look at choices the men and women make and then say there is a difference. Of course if you take a male doctor and you compare his income with a female worker at McDonnalds, you can not say there is a gender pay gap it's a different line of work. So is the calculation with the gender pay gap it's not based on the different fields of work. The actual difference in the pay gap is due to men working longer hours. I believe the difference is around 7% and the difference of men working more hours is about that amount as well. So basically there is not really a noticable pay gap. So as long as studies are committed in a wrong way the mith of the gender pay gap will exist

    I'm a new Engineering graduate in France, from China. Lived in Israel as well. Gender equality is one of the most present things in my philosophy and as a woman in Engineering I certainly have some position to say.
    Gender equality doesn't exist yet, but countries like France and the Netherlands are quite good. That's one of the reasons why I couldn't stay in Israel.
    The achievement of gender equality needs the efforts from both women and men. Women need to know that you're completely capable of everything that men can do. Nowadays most productions rely on technology rather than physical efforts before the Information Era.

    TBH, almost all of the statistcs at the end are the result of the actions of women.
    1. Women with the same degree have the same chance of gettig the job.
    2. Women still tend to take up the role of primary care giver or have trouble working full-time.
    Anecdotal but my mom and a few friends are perfect examples of this. Two of my female friends have been expressing that they 'need more time for themselves' and have switched from a full-time position to a part time position even before they had kids. My mom and one of those two wanted to be full-time mothers so they quit their jobs. I have only one female friend that is in her thirties as is still pursuing her career to the fullest. For my male friends it's roughly 80% full-time 20% something else.
    4. When they expressed that their male counterparts were earning more I asked if they were asking for raises. Two even told me 'I shouldn't have to ask for that', I was shocked. So, take note; ASK FOR A RAISE, THEY AREN'T JUST GOING TO GIVE IT TO YOU.
    5. Referring to point 2 on this. If you know anything about statistics you know that in a normal distribution the ends amplify the differences in the middle. With the difference of being work centered between women and men on average I don't find it odd that even less women are willing to do the 80 hours week that some men do to get into a top posittion. Now we have quota that are only going to diminish the accomplishments of women who actually worked for it. Simply because of people will start feeling that they are only there to fill the quotum.
    So I really have a lot of problem with seeing the choices people make and are happy with as a problem. (88% of us dutchies say they are happy)
    "So, even in the Netherlands there is still a long way to go in term's of 'emancipatie van vrouwen) emancipation of women..."
    In my opinion this has very little to do with emancipation but more with indiviual interest and choice.
    I mean if we're going to talk about equality of outcome here don't you think it's kinda self-defeating to say:
    "By the way... the team of the Dutch Summer School and Dutch Winter School consists of 85% women... So, Happy Women's Day to our teachers!"
    I mean if outcome is a valid datapoint to measure emancipation then that looks like you lot are being pretty sexist towards men with so little representation.

    A lot of people don't realize that equality of opportunity doesn't result in equality of outcome. Meaning the statistics at the end don't say anything about the opportunities people have. Even if they did, all thing considered everything is pretty equal. Two average are in practice never the same. Take for example the average income of tall vs short people, I'll bet that there is also an income difference there. Let's also have a quick look at the percentage of women in top positions (11%). How do you expect this to be 50/50 when 68% of women work part time vs 13% of men at 31-35 years. A quick calculation shows that this would end at around 27% if we only based it upon the work time, factor in other variables and I'll bet you end up somewhere around the 11%.
    27% explained:
    full_time_women = 100 - 68 = 32 (assuming a pool of 100 woman)
    full_time_men = 100 - 13 = 87 (assuming a pool of 100 men)
    full_time_workers = full_time_women + full_time_men = 32 + 87 = 119
    percentage_women = full_time_woman / full_time_workers * 100 = 32 / 119 * 100 ≈ 26,89%

    • @3limin4t0r

    As someone who is gender fluid and was raised in The Netherlands I wouldn't agree with the part that you're seen as a human first, and then as your gender. If you're gender-conforming that's true, but if you're gender non-conforming the mentality of "doe maar normaal" ('just be normal') is still pretty strong, and although it's usually only strangers that act like this, it sucks bitterballen to be stared at. It's just much more invisible than it would be in other countries, which is a good thing but also tricky because we think we're completely detached from focusing on gender but we're definitely not there yet in my opinion. Other than that, it's very equal, and when you get to know people they usually don't care anymore.

One reason more women tend to work part time than men is because they enjoy taking care of the children and that's a choise. Same principle applies for salaries in the same position, men tend to feel more comfortable in negotiating their salary and tend to go a little further with it.
      The only equation which could be checked for facts based on only statistics is whether men and women have the same opportunities

  • @spacebug31

    11% females in top positions. There are plenty of legit explanations for that which have nothing to do with discrimination. A job in a top position means you have to be ready for your job at every single given moment, that you have to travel, do overhours, be very flexible, and that sometimes means putting your job before your family. Men in the Netherlands might care more for their children than men in many other countries, but it often still comes down to women spending most time with the kids. Most women start working part time after getting kids, as the statistics show, it's impossible to have a top position if you only want to work 20h a week. A top position requires your full 40h a week and usually a bunch of extra hours, work at home, work during the weekend, ... And many women don't want that because they want to be there for their children after school, in the weekends, on wednesday afternoons, during school breaks. Generally, it's impossible to combine a top position with caring for a family half the time. That is why there's only 11% women in these positions, not because employers discriminate against women. As a woman, I proudly say that my career is the most important thing in my life and by not wanting kids, I immediately have a much higher chance of getting a higher position one day.

The moment u cross the threshold when most start a family or think of starting a family u will start to see differences...obviously.

But while men where doing all that, the women where cooking dinner and looking after their kids... and about rights, the only right theg didnt have was to vote, which sounds big. But when everyone could vote for if women could vote, most women voted no. And do you know why? Because, traditionally, if you wanted the right to vote, you had to sign up for the draft and other emergency and dangerous occupations, like firefighter if a wildfire would start and there wherent enough MEN, or nurse for if a deseas struck the land and there wherent enough doctors. Women where afraid they would have to sign up for those too if they wanted to vote. But ofcourse, like always, an exception was made for those poor fragile people, and now they can vote without those dangers. And about the so called "paygap" it has been proven to not exist. When they studied it, they just did TotalFemaleIncome/TotalMaleIncome, completely disregarding that men take less sickdays, care more about money and less about familly, so work more hours, more overtime, and just dont do the same jobs. And quick logic; do you understand economics? If something is cheaper, but would work just as good (women according to you), then companies would only hire women, untill the point that unemployed women become rare, and if something is rare, it costs more. Do you really think companies care more about giving privilege to men then about making money?

    In the West women and girls have far more "equality" than men and boys do. And most women are completely (and happily) blind to this gross inequality. Give men *actual* equality under the law and give men reproductive rights. We're nowhere close to "equality" until that's done. "Equality" is a simply feminist term for female supremacy.
    Oh, and women should of course also start doing all those types of jobs that they always leave to men: Mining, farming, sewage work, construction etc. Stop demanding female quotas for the "top" jobs in society unless you also start filling positions on the "bottom" of society as well. And stop talking about a "wage gap" when men work way more than women. And don't forget to become homeless without gender-biased help. And go to prison, in cases where the other gender simply gets a slap on the wrist or doesn't even go to court.
    And especially, go to prison, lose your job, or your education when your ex-spouse or date accuses you (without much evidence) of rape or incest, either because of regret of having sex with you, or wanting to steal your children from you with the help of the power of the state.
    How can women be so blind to all this? And I haven't even mentioned all the "men" that have now been raised by feminist societies to accept whatever women throw at them. Way to go, "equality"! Until Western women get off their asses and fix this total gender bias against men and boys, March 8th will forever be a day that symbolises the utter hypocrisy of women.
    The reason that Men's Rights groups exist is not that they are "misogynists", but because of reasons like the ones stated above. There is *NO* equality in the West. Men and boys are *FAR* behind - and we're not going to take it much longer, so fix this.

This is of course subject and objective , is it better than a lot of countries yes, do we have a far way to go … absolutely.

      How many women start their own company and how many men do? The difference in numbers there is as big as it is with CEO's of big companies. Are women not allowed to start a company? Equal opportunity does not mean equal outcome, is it so hard to understand.
      Another example, there has been quite a big campain to get more women into IT. And now after many years there are still like 95% men and we gave up. Why? Women dont want to work in IT. Do you want to force them? How would you feel if you are not allowed to do the work you love to do but you get forced to do some shitty job that makes you miserable but you earn 50% more? Is that a step back or forward?

    i would not mind giving up 50% of the time working if its for my children or if my wife got more working ambition then i do. the reason more women have part time jobs later on its because they don't want/or think its to expensive to pay for a babysitter/ or (what we have here is a sort of a school where only baby's go and there are multiple people to look after them ) in the case both parents want to work. for all i know. its basically the same for women and men. i have worked in more company's where there is a female boss or higher positioned women . i truly cannot c a gap between women and men. and if i ask my coworkers if they earn more or less money. its always the same . only the difference is time spend at a company, and function. it goes like this, up to the age of 23 u get payed by minimum going up by +/- 1 euro a year .after this you get a static pay like any other. female or male it does not matter. after that you can grow in function. and you get more money or raises the longer you work for the company, i never heard or seen someone my age doing the same work earn less money . BUT there are instances that help you look for jobs nad u can get a job by going through those instances, by doing it this way you always earn less and different amounts of money since every instance that you work for will take some money from you for providing you work, and the cost for that is different for every instance. this is my experience and my opinion. i am 31 and am a full dutch guy. hope this was informative.

      It is not so much that they get paid less if they are in the same pay scale, for example, that is not allowed by law, but the will less quickly make a promotion then men and therefore fall behind in wages over the entire period
      that they work until they retire.
      The numbers also look at the total working population, so also by the age group of 50 ~ 60 plus, fewer women will work in the same position than men in that age group.
      Furthermore, there will be a break in the career of many women due to pregnancy and as a result, they will have also incurred a pay gap.
      If you compare that with other countries with the same criteria, we are not doing so badly, but the difference is there.

    I am willing to accept them, but only because I read an article about women not knowing how to negotiate for a raise. (Will put a source in if I can find it again, was in the news about half a year ago) That is however not an inequality problem, women are not prevented from asking for a raise, they just don't know how to go about it.
    Secondly, do women want those top positions? Most women around me don't want to. Should we force them to do so against their will, because it will improve equality statistics? I would rather have someone motivated and capable.

    Compared to many of their countries of origin we indeed have much more respect and opportunities. However, the income disparity is still very much a thing, as is the much lower chance of getting hired in top management positions. I'm a highly educated woman (2 degrees & extra certificates), hard working, ambitious and in my particular field I excell in certain specialisations. Unfortunately I experience(d) both the income gap as well as difficulties getting promoted - even over less qualified men. What's worse: in companies with a rather high % of men I was often not taken seriously at all when I started and had to prove myself over and over (remember one meeting where I was the only female besides the secretary. I was actually going to lead said meeting, but the people from outside of the company or new male colleagues immediately assumed I was there to get their coffee and make notes, instead of being only secondary to the CEO. Disgusting behaviour and not that long ago either). The only plus side about it is that men like that always underestimate women (like me) and therefore usually fall flat on their faces when it comes to discussions and negotiations. But it remains very frustrating.
    I'm well aware of the fact that not all Dutch men are like that, but the phrase "old boys network" or the idea that "women can't do xyz" is one that's still prevailing in too many sectors, as well as too many minds. Sadly the extra result of it is that men who would love to be a stay-at home- dad or become an aestethician (to name sth) aren't taken seriously either or are being made fun of. Men and women should both have the right and opportunity to follow a dream, their heart and talent. For the same salary and with the same respect. We're further than several other countries in Europe but certainly not far enough.

    Male voting rights in Netherlands: 12 december 1917
    Female voting rights in Netherlands: 28 september 1919
    nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algemeen_kiesrecht
    Yup, ALL of us have only had voting rights for just over a 100 years. And when I learned about this a little while back, I was super surprised this wasn't widely celebrated here in the Netherlands back in 2017 and 2019. I mean, I was personally under the impression all men got it back somewhere in 1650, and women only got it in 1973, by the way the "evil male history" is portrayed by some, but let's not get too political and think too much into why it isn't common fact among Dutch people we've just passed our 100 years of voting rights for all, because when I learned about it and mentioned it in conversations, no one knew it was this close together. I mean, I could talk for hours about how "populism" seems to be the super bad word of today, but the opposite of populism is elitism, which is what we had before 100 years ago, for thousands of years, but again, let's not get too political and celebrate the idea that one of the first things Dutch men did when given the vote themselves was give the vote to their women as well.

    Cool videos and generally good to hear. Only last part is a bit off, opinions are opinions of course. But the last shot with the factsheet are not right. First of all you only use age as condition for the first two points. That is especially a miss on the second last point, because young women these days already earn more than there male peers (in general, not for the same job but i get back on that later). The pay gap comes from the older generation of which a lot of women don't work, work less or didn't work all their years, meanwhile the men of that group worked there constant their whole life which results in high salaries. So for this group there is a pay gap, but nothing unfair. It has more to do with life choices, than with gender. These days these life choices can be made more fair then back in the days. Also for most of the jobs there simply is a collective contract/agreement which makes it impossible to pay less to woman.
    This is a hard myth and doesn't make sense at all. It should not be given as a fact to begin with, because people build their opinions on a wrong fundation.
