Shifter: Antarctica Top Five Essentials
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 21 дек 2023
- As the trip draws near, I begin to reduce what makes the final cut for our voyage to Antarctica. Am I overpacking? Most likely, but this is one instance where I feel like NOT having something essential might make the trip more challenging than necessary.
Great equipment, regardless of where it fits in the expedition hierarchy, is equipment you never have to think about. If your kit isn't great it forces you to burn time and energy wondering if it will work the way it was intended to. A great camera, for example, doesn't get in the way of great photography. The camera floats in the background while your mind is consumed by light, timing, and composition, or the things that actually matter. The same applies to other kit, clothing, and more.
My top five, or is there more....revolves around a camera and lens, binoculars, boots, jackets, and rain layers. And yes, of course, the journal.
Camera and lens combination.

Safe travels, and happy pre-birthday!
Wow! One of my ancestors travelled to Antarctica in the year between Scott and Shackleton during the great age of exploration, what an amazing destination, good luck!
I can't even imagine. What those folks endured was simply astonishing.
Micki and I went to Antarctica about 5 years ago on a Hurtigruten Ice breaker with about 150 people. The trip was 27 days. Great trip. You will like all the birds, both flying and walking on the ground. When we get a chance we will go again.
That sounds so Schuster. You probably did paintings while in the Zodiac then sold them in towns all throughout the region. See you guys when we get back. Stay strong!
I've been to both places in S.A. With your photo-skills you'll love both (though almost total opposites). I do have experience with cold-weather boots (many hours at -20f). An extra set of felt liners would be great (I say felt but probably some combination of materials now), but if not, pull the liners everynight to dry. They will become wet from your feet during the day. It may not be as cold there, but the difference is night-and-day in terms of comfort and distraction. That said, not a bad place to have a Birthday.
I'm fragile Jeff. How did you know I have wet feet? These babies are warm, that's for sure. It's too hot here now to even test them out. We went from teens to mid 50s. Crazy times.
Also suggest electric boot dryers if your feet really sweat. Wet feet and freezing temperatures can spoil your day, really badly. Extra socks to rotate out while first pair are drying. Learned these lessons well on a January 2023 wolf safari to Yellowstone when morning air temps were minus 35 and highs were minus 20s. But air temps in AA shouldn’t be much below freezing… it’s the wind chill that is the killer. Was in AA in 2008 with Lindblad Expeditions: was a great experience.
One other note: a balaclava can be worthwhile in the wind. Protect your lips from sun and wind, and bring sunscreen and sunglasses.
Who are you traveling with? (What company?)
Safe trip my maan!! WOW from Albania to Antarctica, you are covering all. Cant wait to see what is coming.
Yes. Lucky man.
I love Peter Mathiessen's non-fiction work! Certainly gives me the exploration bug.
Same...
My dad lived in Casey base in the 70’s.
I've heard about guys like that. Legends.
Your birding new hobby is so surprising aha but as always, you are so enthousastic, that’s great ! Keep going Uncle Dan !
MIDDLE AGE.......CRISIS......BIRDS...
Hey Dan, love that you are testing out your Antarctica coat before travelling
Oh ya, New Mexico is good testing grounds.
And an ample supply of Dramamine . I had a friend many years back who made that very voyage. To put it mildly, both he and his girlfriend found themselves making that crossing, “feeding the fish”…
Oh ya. I don't get seasick but my wife is holding her's in her hand right now...
Dramamine won’t be strong enough… get a prescription from your primary. Alternatively, there will be a doctor onboard who can give you a shot of some magic medicine that cures it all. (Reference: return trip from South Georgia to Ushuaia against 25-ft seas).
Hi Dan, we are UK based travel lovers and best of all explorers of what the World and all its wonders has to offer. Both keen photographers and followers of your You Tube blog forever. Your enthusiasm for your trip to Antarctica is palpable to say the least and we love it. Especially the bird part. The Albatross will blow you away and we cannot wait to follow your travels once underway. We hope it will live up to all your expectations. Best book to use Ocean Birds of the World by Steve N G Howell & Kirk Zufelt. Worth getting on pdf. with all our best wishes Sheana & Steve Eccles.
Oh man, thank you. Great score. Luckily, I will be with a naturalist crowd who can help me identify these beauties. Will be posting when I can....see you then.
Good luck and be safe
Looking forward to your visual diaries from AT
Me too.
Enjoy your trip uncle Danno
I was hesitant about 40MP, but decided to go with h2 instead of h2s, and I have no regrets, details matter. I wish you a productive journey.
I have both and they are totally capable.
You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din. Different continent.
I have the same pen, its great, and under appreciated...
Pen brothers.
I'm guessing you're packing an extra journal. Having followed your blog for a few years, pretty sure you're going to blow through the one you showed here.
Yep, have two and if I need I can get another in Argentina...
Keep those batteries warm Uncle Danno. Hope you have as many birthday celebrations as I did in Peru. Happy New Year. M3ATX
Hey M3, right back you and that super partner. Both Amy and I will turn another year..on the ice. Her's will, of course, be the big one.
Happy BIRTHDAY 🎇🎆
Gracias!
Picked up the L5 jacket at the outlet. Money!
Shazam!
Take precautions against condensation in lenses and cameras when moving back and forth from outside to inside.
Be sure to clean your boots when coming back on board….. you don’t want to track penguin poop into your cabin (it does not smell nice!).
An aside: are you sure that the ship/expedition company doesn’t provide proper jackets and boots for your use? Lindblad/NatGeo and other expedition companies do. The jackets are typically bright red or blue so the crew can keep track of everyone during land excursions (you’d be amazed at the stories they tell of folks wandering off from the group). You’ll save a lot of space packing…..
I will roll in penguin poo just to blend in.
I think you are going to want the 100-400.
My wife has it....on loan.
Have a great trip! BTW - were you wearing a watch on each wrist during the video? Reminded me of the adage, "A man with one watch always knows what time it is. A man with two watches is never sure."
One is watch, one is Garmin which is use for the workout I'm about to do. 2024 is the year I return to optimum fitness. I find the Garmin useful. It won't make the trip south, however.
Pretty cool cap Dan. Where did you get it ?
Western Rise, Versa hat. Waterpoof, crushproof and no logo.
Two things, Dan...first, my apologies. I missed why you're headed to Antarctica. Blurb sending you? Second...two watches? Assuming one is for time keeping (is it a Timex on the left wrist?) and the other a fitness tracker? Good luck, godspeed. Are you reading any explorer accounts to get in the mood? I just read the Lost City Of Z...but that's the Amazon.
Love "Lost City," the author lives here in Santa Fe. His other books are good too. A small group of "author mafia" here. I'm heading south because I got the opportunity to go. A long story but figured, now is the time. Blurb isn't sending me but I am sending them work as I go. They allow me the time to go, which is great, and it's better than me sitting at home for weeks.
@@DANIELMILNOR505 Amazing! Can't wait to hear/see all about it.
Hey, let me know if you want to get a drink when you get to BA!
Heck ya. Please. Email me and we can WhatsAPP.
…and #7: the Zf 😂
Its' glorious.
Don’t forget to keep your batteries warm. ✌️
I have slot in my underwear.
Wandering albatross luck wished
Thank God I'm with people who can actually identify these things..
When are you guys leaving?
Next few days...
#7 should be a good book
End of the Earth, reading it now. A few more in tow.
don't fall off the edge!
Anything for a selfie.
Enjoy your trip uncle Danno
