      The 4Runner is nowhere near the best in its class, since most people want good technology, features, and fuel economy. Most people don't keep a car for 20 years.

    Hi Shari, as always we look forward to your videos in my family. This is another great video about the Highlander and 4Runner. As a 5th gen 4Runner owner, I agree wholeheartedly everything you had mentioned in this video. I just want to add that if anyone considering to buy the 4Runner just make sure you physically see the undercarriage and ladder frame before buying. I suggest Krown rustproof annually and religiously and I don’t see why it will not last at least 2-3 decades. It is a vehicle that you buy for a lifetime. Gas mileage is comparable to any V6. I get city 12.5 litres/100 kms…I drive modestly without a heavy foot. When you drive a 4Runner, you driving habits will change to more a relax type of driving style. It is purpose built for different driving dynamics. It is the opposite of sports sedan.

    I drove a Highlander, and it felt like a buick/boat. 4Runner (that I ended up getting) was a totally different animal - precise, firm with excellent handling. Not to mention rugged with unsurpassed off-road capabilities. At the time (2004), 4Runner was even almost $4K cheaper. What's here to talk about?!?

  • @Doc1855

    Hi Shari,
    Both vehicles are great but it’s a unibody.
    It’s just not as durable for serious off roading like the 4Runner.
    My wife wanted me to buy her a 4Runner for its durability.
    But we have a 11 Ford Ranger XLT super cab 4X4 for our off road needs.
    The Highlander is too big for our needs.
    We looked at the Venza and the Rav hybrid. Then she drove an Outback and fell in love with it.
    I know it won’t last as long as a Toyota, but as long as it’ll make it to 200K miles, then we’ll be happy.
    My car is a 11 Rav 4WD Limited with a 3.5 V6 and I LOVE it.
    I only drive about 5K miles a year, so I’m thinking I can drive it another 15 years.
    Thanks for another Great review.
    I enjoy everyone that you make !

    Easy answer…buy both! I did. Haha. Bought myself a 22 TRD ORP and modded up a bit for light Overlanding adventures and daily driving. And then an RX350L (highlanderish) for the family car/wife. Best of both worlds since you cant really compare them. 2 different animals. Keep up the good work on your content.
    You should compare an NA 22 Highlander limited with an RX350L Premium package.

    I'd like to see your take when it comes to 4Runner vs GX460. I know it would be an apples to apples+ comparison but that's what it's come down to for me. I really don't want to get a Highlander even though it makes a lot more sense in just about every way. I enjoy your work.

    • @Don-md6wn
      @Don-md6wn Год назад

      I think 4Runner vs GX460 comes down to which features appeal to you, like the V8 engine in the Lexus versus some of the off road stuff on the Off Road or TRD Pro trim packages on the 4Runner. Build quality, fit and finish is going to be pretty much the same as 4Runners are built in the same factory in Japan by the same workers who build Lexuses and the 4Runner is basically a Lexus with a Toyota badge. I had been driving a 2011 Lexus RX350 for the last 4 years and recently bought a 2018 4Runner Limited. The 4Runner is noticeably quieter and more solid than the Lexus, likely in large part because it's a body on frame vehicle that weighs a lot more. The 4Runner I bought had 60K miles and it looks and drives like it's new. If Toyota versus Lexus has been a consideration for you, I wouldn't pay much attention to that. Just get the one that has the features you want. Check out the videos David of the RUclips channel Automotive Press has made on the build quality of the 4Runner. He is an automotive engineer who has been in the factory that builds 4Runners 7 or 8 times and talks about the engineering, materials, and production process.

    I noticed during your driving sessions the Highlander view out the rear is extremely small and obstructed by the roof and the pillars. The view out the rear window of the 4Runner is much clearer. I’ve noticed with modern SUVs, they tend to have very large pillars that obstruct view out the sides… The glass on the outside conceals these large pillars. I think there is lazy engineering for an incomprehensible safety rating badge…playing on fears of safety is kinda like a shaming of you don’t buy a car with a safety badge….

    I just bought a cop car. Here in Honolulu the police department will subsidize an officer's private vehicle after they have been on the force for a while and it's almost always a 4 Runner. It cuts down on maintaining a large fleet. Consider that these SUVs will be on the road in heavy, hot city traffic 5 days a week or more if they work overtime. My 4 Runner is white because I think it's more durable and easier to keep clean but the cops favor the dark colors. I guess it makes them look more menacing.

      I think the fuel economy (rated 17/20) is pretty reasonable for a 4500 pound vehicle that is built like a tank for off road driving and has a 5000 pound towing capacity. It's not the vehicle to buy if you're never going to drive off road and want good fuel economy. I've just replaced a 2011 Lexus RX350 that is nowhere near as heavy or capable off road or towing (2000 pound capacity) or in snow with a 2018 4Runner Limited. The Lexus is only rated at 19/23 and it takes premium fuel (which makes no difference in gas mileage or performance, so I put regular in it). For all the extras I get with the 4Runner, I'll accept the loss of 2 or 3 miles per gallon.

    This question is a no brainer for me, Its always been Toyota 4 Runner. The 4Runner is a well, better built on a truck platform, and its engine is a true straight V6 and back in da day it came out with that powerful V8, and it has that ability to jump to a rear wheel drive to that badass 4 wheel drive with a punch of a button. No disrespect to the Toyota Highlander, because its a very capable all around vehicle for the city no matter what she can dish out from a human perspective to what some of what nature can dish out.

When I was looking for my next vehicle, I was comparing the 4Runner, Jeep, and Tacoma--not a Highlander. If you're in the market for a Highlander, I feel you'd look at other unibody midsize SUVs, not a 4Runner.

  • @sifugrant4468
    @sifugrant4468 Год назад

    The Highlander is a great vehicle and a good fit for those wanting a smoother ride and better fuel economy, but the styling is so bland. It's basically a modern take on the minivan (I know Highlander owners will disagree, but it's true). For most families, the Highlander is the more practical choice, but it has no soul. I'll take a 4Runner or GX460 over a Highlander all day, every day, no comparison. Body on frame, sits higher, built like a tank and both made in Japan. Can't say that about the newer generation Highlanders for the North American market. If you decide on a Highlander, just realize that there is limited historical data related to the life expectancy of the batteries and related generator on the hybrid model. Many "experts" say expect to get 200k on some hybrids, but that is simply their educated hypothesis, the reality is only time will tell how long these newer hybrids will last. Remember the old Nissan 300z twin turbos? Every teen wanted one, until they realized the cost to replace the turbos was higher than what they could resale the car. If you trade your car in every 4 years or so no problem, but if you keep for 20 years then you might stay clear of high mileage hybrids. Don't be left holding the bag having to replace hybrid batteries/ generator. Really enjoy your videos and you taking the time to give a fair analysis.

    Thats why my choice would be the Highlander. For back country, a pre-Fiat Wrangler would be #1. If I'm rock climbing in Cripple Creek, it has ALWAYS been a Jeep Wrangler.

      And if you need a vehicle that is good doing a blend of all that (except for the gas mileage) and has great long term reliability, it's a 4Runner.

    How can you compare these? The 4 Runner drives like a truck, the Highlander feels like a car. They are built on completely different platforms with different engines! Lol

    Do you go off road? yes: 4Runner No: Highlander

    The difference is easy. The 4Runner is a male SUV and the Highlander is a Female SUV. We have both. The Highlander gets better mileage, more room and is unibody construction. The 4Runner is a small truck. Extremely reliable and a good off road capable vehicle. A guys SUV!

    How many people take their shiny new vehicle into the bush, rocky roads, mud? Suddenly it is a dirty, scratched, not so pretty, not so proud to drive.
