Since 100% of my driving is normal road it now has 6k miles. I do have an issue and genuine dislike/concern about its transmission. I know it's an old true and tested built but for some reason it is so hard to shift out of park. Everytime it sounds like a harsh grind or bump. I have tried neutral + parking break and then park and it still so hard when I drive it next time to get it out of parking. It doesn't matter if its hot or cold. I took it to toyota and the tech said it was normal. It pulls forward when I shift it to park and when I turn the car off I hear a shutter or a light knock into parking. Please give me your advice since you have one, the transmission rocking and if it's hard a normal thing to get out of parking. No transmission- rav4 2020, last year tundra, current tacoma feel this way or even any other first couple 4runner generations. Please help me out. Thank you!

I live in Minnesota. Where we get quite a bit of snow for the winter. Our family owns both vehicles. My wife owns a 2021 Toyota Highlander Platinum. I own a 2012 Toyota 4Runner limited. Both vehicles are excellent vehicles. The design to do two completely different things. My forerunner is perfect for the winters and doing chores around the house. Such as pulling stumps from trees that I have fallen. As for the Highlander it's a smooth plush ride. Perfect for taking my son out of town to his AAU basketball games. The 20 year old V6 in the 4Runner, is the same 20 year old V6 in the Highlander. The 4Runner has the 1GR engine, the Highlander has the 2GR. The main difference is the the displacement and the fuel injection system. The Limited does have low range, just like the other models, and it can lock just like the part time systems. The Limited 4Runner is actually just as capable if you want it to be, as the other models. You can setup the Limited in the same way as the other models, just put some good off-road tires and a lift kit if you desire. Your statements about the Limited are incorrect in the regard. The transfer case in the Limited is actually the same as the other 4Runners, it just has an added center diff that is lockable when needed. As far as tow capacity goes, the 4Runner is tougher. They may claim on paper the the Highlander has the same tow capacity, but the Highlander transmission won't hold up to the abuse of the 4Runner's transmission. The 5 Speed auto in the 4Runner, is the same transmission that was used in the earlier Tundra pickups. These 5 speed transmissions are very robust, the Highlander transmission would burn up long before the 4Runner in towing. The 4Runner tow capacity is under rated, I am not saying you should tow more then the recommended 5,000 pounds, there are other factors that come into play that limits the tow capacity that have nothing to do with its actual capabilities. The wheel base of the 4Runner is on the short side, and that is one of the reasons it's only "rated" at 5,000 pound. Some of the earlier 4Runners, like the somewhat rare V8 4th generation models actually were rated for 6,000 pounds. The only difference is just the increased torque that the 2UZ V8 engine had. I'm not ripping on the Highlander, but it is correct to say it is a glorified minivan. It does pretty much have the same drive train under it as the Sienna. The Sienna and the Highlander are excellent, but they in fact are cars and the 4Runner is a truck. You are totally correct about that. Your facts about these two vehicles where pretty spot on for the most part. 4Runner my pick, one of the best most reliable Toyotas around.

A similarly equipped 2012 4Runner would have demanded 18-20K and cost less when it was new (That's a lot of gas- about 42,000 miles worth). Off roading doesn't always mean up a mountain with no road. Plenty of rural areas have roads that destroy cars and car based SUV's. As you get older the Highlander is preferred. The 4Runner is a better vehicle the Highlander is a better ride.

My highlander is fast, nimble, and comfortable. I have a severe back injury so for me I need great ride comfort. So my options are limited. I don’t have either one, but for my daily commute, of 140 miles round trip a Highlander just makes more sense.
4runner is the cooler vehicle, though…
They cost a lot of money though, but it’s a Toyota well worth it at the end

The full time 4wd on Limited trim is very much like the much higher price Land Cruiser and works way better than all other 4Runner trims in slippery on rad conditions!

I Don't like the hump in the middle of the dash, don't understand why it can't be set further down to eliminate the obscured view. And, of course, the styling of the 4Runner is definitely better than the Highlander. What I really want to know is can I turn off all that annoying, dangerous lazy-driver crap like Lane Assist, Brake Assist, and Adaptive Cruise? It's almost criminal that we are forced to pay for all this unnecessary junk... and people wonder why a new vehicle costs $50K +!

At $3 a gallon you would have to drive 3000 - 6000 miles a month to cost $200-$400 more in gas. Maybe you drive that many miles, I don't know but, at those miles, the depreciation alone would justify the 4Runner.

I have a 2022 Highlander Hybrid Limited and love it. If the 4Runners would give me the fuel economy and the tech that the Highlander offers I would've picked the 4Runners. Until that happens I'll stick to the Highlander. It feels good to go for a month and some times more than a month without having to fill up the tank. It helps that work is not that far from home and using the Hybrid system as intended. I see people driving hybrid vehicles and defeating the purpose of the hybrid system. They're just burning cash the way they drive.
