Same here! I remember starting to get suspicious about them when I started seeing them recycle the heath ledger joker posters but colored swapped to green.
Just wanted to mention this cool little Easter-egg; Bane's right-hand man, the one with the red-scarf, was meant to be a homage to Deadshot. He's one of David Goyer's favorite characters and he wanted to work Deadshot in somehow and that was it.
I remember believing the rumors that riddler would actually be in the Dark Knight sequel and along with Spider-Man 4 with Carnage as the main villain good times....
I remember watching these old fake Dark Knight Rises trailers back in the early 2010's, I knew they were obviously fake but I enjoyed watching them lol
I think Paul Dano and Colin Farrell's portrayals of the Riddler and the Penguin are pretty close to what if they were the villains in The Dark Knight Rises. That's what I love about the Reevesverse, it feels like a spiritual successor to the Nolanverse, mixed with the Burtonverse.
To be honest that version of Riddler and Penguin is what i expected in the Dark Knight Rises but was totally not expecting Bane to be the villain instead.
Oh this takes me back to the wild Leo as Riddler stuff. I'd be lying if I wasn't tempted to hear what the Nolans or Goyer had planned for Edward Nygma.
@@WarpingFist after Rises there was a fan made comic i can't remember the name but that pushed Robin as the new Batman and wished they included Ridder if this continued, but it's a pipe dream. I do wish one asked Goyer or Jonah Nolan about pitches or thoughts on IF a Riddler could have worked in this take on Batman.
I remember all the “confirmations” shortly after the Dark Knight. Johnny Depp was going to be the Riddler, Philip Seymour Hoffman was going to be the Penguin. Two Face was going to be the main villain. Robin would make his debut. It was an exciting prospect, but was never meant to be
I remember this one fan trailer that had a photo-negative head Agent 47 from the 2007 Hitman movie as Black Mask and used footage from Darkman as Hush...
Ah yes. I remember those days. 10 to 11 year old me had a blast looking up all the fan made posters and trailers for the film (even falling for some of them) especially since Riddler was my favorite Batman villain, more so then the Joker actually (yeah, i said), so i was happy most of, if not all the fan made stuff, utilized him. Also of this fan made stuff was genuinely great and well made too, which helped alot. But yeah, the fact that there was so much of it, enough to the point where it coild be considered marketing for its own non-existent alternate film actually, just tells how huge the hype for the third Dark Knight film was. And while i am happy with the film we got, apart of me wishes i could live in an alternate world where the rumors were true, and that the film came out in 2011, and featured Riddler as the main villain (played by Depp), possibly featuring Penguin and/or Harley as the secondary villain(s) (and Catwoman playing some sort of role like she does in the final movie) and was closer to a adaptation of Dark Victory then the Dark Knight Returns, and a dark and gritty mystery thriller, more closer in tone and structure to The Dark Knight. Just to see what that kind of film would look like through the eyes of Nolan. Just to see how that type of film would've played out, and how Nolan would've handled the Riddler. Though i imagined he probably be very similar to the one from Matt Reeves The Batman in terms of characterization. Makes me wonder if these rumors inspired Reeves to use characters like Riddler and Penguin as the villains of his first Batman movie.
A extra bit of trivia: the Batman embargo in the 2000s effectively blocked characters that were going to appear in Nolans films from appearing in other media, like the animated shows. This embargo first fell upon the crew behind Batman 2004, who were blocked from including Mad hatter, scarecrow, two face and Raz. This effectively tells us who Nolan wanted to use in his films from the start (with the exception of the joker who wasnt under the embargo). This hints at the idea that Nolan wanted Mad hatter to be the original villain of his 3rd film, alongside Ledgers Joker. The Riddler wasn’t part of the Nolan embargo, implying that Nolan didn’t originally want to use him (Bane also wasn’t part of the embargo). This + Michael Jai White alluding to the idea that Gambol was kept alive so he could return working for the joker in the 3rd film implies to me that Nolan’s original plan was for the joker to become a major crime lord in the 3rd film, recruiting Mad hatter, Gambol, Harley Quinn and possibly others to make a clown gang and take over the city (Kinda similar to banes final plan). Although this was obviously all thrown out when Heath ledger passed away. I personally think the Ridder rumours were the the studios attempt to repackage the plans that had already been made and make a joker clone, a similar thought process that lead to the 90s Jim Carrey riddler in Batman forever (Hence why they eyed up big names like Depp and Decaprio) but Nolan & the writers pushed back and decided to completely rebuild the final film from the ground up, giving us Bane and the Dark knight rises that we got. (Also David Tennant was my favourite Ridder fancast from this era, he woudve been fantastic as a Batman antagonist!)
The closest thing to the Riddler was literally in the Nolan universe. It was Coleman, aka. Mr. Reese (Mysteries). He even tried to blackmail Mr. Fox by telling him he knew about Bruce Wayne's "hobby." Even showing Fox his own schematics of the tumbler. It's on YT.
Another great video! I honestly wished we could've had Riddler as the main villian imo. Btw, you forgot to mentioned that Hugo Strange was rumored to appear in the film and he was speculated to be played by Robin Williams or Tom Hardy.
Don't know if anyone remembers the rumours of Robin Williams being cast as Hugo Strange. I didn't think that would be possible until I saw his darker roles in One Hour Photo and Insomnia.

Bane, "League of Shadows" returning and most importantly Talia Al Ghul was very lazy. The LOS's perception was Bruce/Batman single handedly defeated them and their leader (Ras Al Ghul) in Batman Begins. The remaining members would've wanted no part of returning with Bane and Talia. To be fair to Nolan he didn’t even wanna make Batman 3. After what happened to heath apparently he was ready to quit the franchise and didn’t even feel motivated to make another or had an idea. I love The Dark Knight Rises, and I always thought it was a good end to the trilogy. But, man, the Riddler story where he's trying to expose Gordon and uncover Batman's identity would have been much more straight-forward of a plot and maybe could have been a more solid finale to the trilogy. It's awesome that your recent videos have been digging up certain cultural moments of the past that kids today would have no idea about and it would be awesome if you did videos on the public's perception of the MCU pre-Avengers or the 3 year anticipation of the Force Awakens
Really great video. I remember being really excited for this stuff when I was a kid. I'm not sure how true this is, but I've heard that before the passing of Heath Ledger, the original plan was for the third film to be about the aftereffects of The Joker on society, which I think would have been spectacular. In all honesty, the tendency at the time for people to jump on The Penguin and The Riddler was something I found to be a bit disappointing (still do) and something people did only because they were villains in the previous films. With so many great villains like Mr Freeze, Clayface, Poison Ivy, Killer Croc, I think the creators were spoiled for choice. Of course, ultimately you want to pick a character who resonates well with the themes of the film as a whole. I remember reading an idea someone had for a plot about the Mad Hatter, where he sells a euphoric "Nostalgia" drug and how it could be tied into themes of upholding Dent's legacy. One of the fanmade posters I saw had the Dark Knight bat logo penciled in green with the whole bottom left corner missing and a dot underneath, making it resemble a ?, which I think was a genius bit of graphic design. (There is is! 5:53!) Additionally, though nobody really talked about this, I think that Stephen Colbert would have been a perfect fit for the Riddler. Though he hasn't ever really stepped out of his "persona" and pursued this, comedic actors often have a lot of talent for serious acting roles as well. Of course, The Riddler could also be a perfect fit, looking to "expose" the lie that Batman ironically wanted despite it harming him, giving them potential for an interesting dynamic.
Having the Riddler as the villain for the third one would’ve been so fuckin’ awesome. Having it be a mystery action/mystery thriller film with having Nygma as the main villain somehow being involved with the police hunting down Batman, would’ve been a perfect follow up for The Dark Knight. Having the League of Shadows felt like it was lazy writing or last-minute in writing during production, and just felt like it was trying to go full circle. I’m not saying TDKR was a bad movie, it just could’ve been a little bit more interesting in my honest opinion.
Well I kinda wish we could have gotten some of them in the actual movie than what we got, how about do Spider-Man 4 like I thought the villains were going to be the Lizard, Carnage and Hobgoblin(Roderick Kingsley) like there was a golden goblin mask in Spider-Man 3 that was never used.
Yes and Gordon ends up killing Black Mask in a container and there's some weird speech by Batman about how life is not fair and that sometimes we have to do things to keep their hands clean I don't know, it was really stupid.
When im here, are the only times i can say i am very happy to be FISTED 😊 i recall these old pics/clips...damn, so many good ideas and we got a bad movie
I read a story online that, TDKR starts right after Batman escapes the GCPD and returns to the Batcave where Bane and the league are waiting for him. Alfred is taken out. Along with Batman tired from his fight with Joker he's broken by Bane. They leave him to suffer and that's why he becomes a recluse for eight years .
Oh god, I remember all this like it was yesterday. After dark knight was released, I remember seeing fan made posters and trailers of a third Nolan Batman movie everywhere in 2008 and 2009.
I remember seeing that this RUclips series, the Joker Blogs got a copy of the script given to them before the film came out, which made me think Ledger would be getting recast. God I miss that series.
My issue now, having not really gotten into this fandom until about 2 years later and hearing all this for the first time, is that I kinda want to see an alternate Batman 3 where the Riddler is some kind of Pi hunting Batman, perhaps in an ensemble with another villain so Bruce can't just go into hiding.
I remember seeing fan posters of David tenant as the riddler and ngl I would be super on board for that as he looks a lot like the riddler in the Arkham games
I thought the clue to The Riddler being in the movie was in The Dark Knight already. The actor who played Reese. He was close to uncovering who Batman was. And he had that look of The Riddler. Red hair and all.
2008-2011 RUclips went wild with theories. I remember Johnny Depp being the popular choice but I always thought Neil Patrick Harris would’ve killed it, and he’s been vocal about playing the riddler for years now. However, in the end I’m glad we got bane
I remembee when Anne Hathaway was casted and all the fans were saying that she was Harley Quinn looking revenge for the Joker. And even there were fans saying that the Joker would comeback as main villain played by Johnny Depp or using deleted scenes and motion capture. Good times 🤣
I remember coming up with ideas on what the third Dark Knight movie could be about. I thought for sure the Joker was going to return but since Heath Ledger was dead, they would have to get the next best thing to play him so they were going to cast Jack Nicholson to return as Joker. Maybe it would involve some kind of myriad of universes which are not uncommon in a lot of superhero movies made today. I was kind of weirded out that they chose Bane to be the villain in it. I never really viewed Bane as being a mastermind before that movie. Most of what I knew of Bane from before came from the Batman Animated Series and Batman and Robin.
I think you’re misremembered a Fan Trailer for Time Burton Batman 3, since for that Film Robin Williams was offered the Riddler role but got screwed again.
The fan posters have some questionable casting choices for the Riddler, but none worse than Leonardo Dicaprio. Sorry, but in no situation should a conventionally attractive man play the Riddler. They would've slapped a pair of glasses in him and called it a day, but that's just not the Riddler to me. Leo just lacks the high-strung nerdiness that Edward needs. He'd look more like one of Bruce's playboy friends than a self-proclaimed intellectual who's obsessed with riddles. The Gotham show did a lot wrong, but their casting for the Riddler is probably the most comic accurate we've gotten.
Oh lord i remember all these rumors back in like 2008/2009 i was hoping the riddler would be in the third film but we fans got bane which was a good film.
The fan posters and trailers were so real tho l, i remember riddler being villian in the theories and posters. It was blast seeing that. But unfortunately we got bane and mediocre story
Till this day i hate this fan arts and rumors. They always so wrong. And its always awful. I remember when Pattinson and Dano were casted as the Batman and Riddler, the fan arts made me not want them as the characters lol. It wasnt even close to what Matt Reeves did
lol ok so unless I am misconstruing how you interpreted the Michael Caine newspaper story.... imho hearing that & then googling for the full quote it's clear that Caine is taking the piss by telling a porkie. I believe that being asked about not only TDK but now the unmade sequel as if he has a hand in the production... Or any type of passion for the source material to spend time speculating. Same thing after inception; he was getting questions in attempts to clear up the ambiguity of the movie. On one occasion he answered that "any scene with me in it is real and not a dream!" elaborating that is what Nolan told him. Hahah so based.
The first half of the movie works better with the riddler instead of bane, honestly Im one of the ones that believe that was the initial plan until something changed , and Nolan just reworked what he had already but now with Bane
I remember this! Oh those early 2000s fan posters so many memories. So weird seeing the hype for the Dark Knight trilogy back then especially now that the movie series are looked at kind mid in hindsight. It wowed normies enough like the xmen but the rest of us were just starving because of Warner Bros policies on Batman. Even now people look at people as Heath's Joker pretty just the riddler.
It was stupid for the supposedly realistic take on Batman to include the villain that's a super strong person enhanced by a serum. Multiple Batman villains that could have chosen instead of Bane and yet he decides to show his hackiness
I remember reading that Michael Caine interview when it first came out. I always took it as him being sarcastic with him saying "I read it in the paper". As if saying "The rumors must be true if they are in the paper!"

Anyone remember a faked leaked script with Deadshot and Black Mask, and shitty version of the Riddler as villains? It may be lost to time now.
I remember this time pretty vividly
Frankly, the idea of the 3rd Dark Knight film surrounding the Riddler as the new antagonist sounds more promising than the film we ended up getting.
I remember the hottest rumour being that Rises would be an adaptation of Batman: Prey and Tom Hardy would be playing Hugo Strange
I thought Depp played the Joker in the Dark Knight.
If you notice, in the interrogation room, the Joker's hair is NOT Death Ledger's.
Weird. I always thought exactly the same thing. In the interrogation scene I always thought it looked like Depp
I remember seeing that this RUclips series, the Joker Blogs got a copy of the script given to them before the film came out, which made me think Ledger would be getting recast.
God I miss that series.
I would have liked to see Philip Seymour Hoffman as the Penguin.
I love movie/game rumors also the fakes too especially looking back of how crazy we were thinking!
I remember seeing fan posters of David tenant as the riddler and ngl I would be super on board for that as he looks a lot like the riddler in the Arkham games
Hoffman would have been phenomenal as The Penguin!!
Riddler would have been too similar to Nolan’s Joker. I doubt they would have done it the 2022 Riddler way
I remember being like 11 and hearing Eddie Murphy as the riddler and I was like no way that has to be a joke
At least we got Neil Patrick Harris as The Music Meister in Batman: The Brave & The Bold.
@ and he killed it in that ep!
"What happens when you abuse control?"
What happens when you LOSE control?"
I remember some of the rumored titles were "The Caped Crusader" and "Shadow of the Bat."
I remembee when Anne Hathaway was casted and all the fans were saying that she was Harley Quinn looking revenge for the Joker. And even there were fans saying that the Joker would comeback as main villain played by Johnny Depp or using deleted scenes and motion capture. Good times 🤣
The riddler would have been perfect for the Dark Knight universe. I remember the Johnny Depp rumours as a 13 year old kid
I can't remeber if it was a Dark Knight Rises fan video but there was an amazing video that had Robin Williams as Hugo Strange.
I think you’re misremembered a Fan Trailer for Time Burton Batman 3, since for that Film Robin Williams was offered the Riddler role but got screwed again.
The fan made poster of Johnny depp would go hard!!
People seeing the riddler as a joker like character still showcases that people don’t read comics
From what I remember of the time, it was Michael C. Hall that everyone wanted.
Do you have any behind the scenes about the history of Sonic films? I heard there is quite a long history...
I never actually thought about looking into the history of the Sonic movie. I might do that now.
@@WarpingFist I would say though, look into the 1990's for starters. I heard it was a lot more like Iron Man as far as development was concerned.
@@WarpingFist I'd be interested in that
Oh lord i remember all these rumors back in like 2008/2009 i was hoping the riddler would be in the third film but we fans got bane which was a good film.
moral of the story: Alfred trolled us all
I remember Jolie as catwoman was another big one
I definitely only remember people fan casting and photosboping Leonard Decaprio for some reason
I remember getting a bootleg version in like 3rd grade from a friend lol can’t even remember what I did with it
Takes me back to 2011
The fan posters and trailers were so real tho l, i remember riddler being villian in the theories and posters. It was blast seeing that. But unfortunately we got bane and mediocre story
Just in time for my lunch break
maybe a part two?
The Film Is Really Underrated
I love the Riddler so much
Till this day i hate this fan arts and rumors. They always so wrong. And its always awful. I remember when Pattinson and Dano were casted as the Batman and Riddler, the fan arts made me not want them as the characters lol. It wasnt even close to what Matt Reeves did
Nolan Said Nice Try 😂
10:30 is that Ronnie Wood?
Clicked so fast
Nice video. I have a video idea fake rumors and leaks of Avengers Infinity War and Endgame and The false hope of Man or Steel 2
Funny you say this comment, because I've been wanting to make a video talking about the fake rumors for weeks now.
@@WarpingFist Really ik excited than. please tell me the Man of Steel 2 rumors and leaks sounds interesting to you?
@@tobiaspegues7318 oh yeah, sounds interesting. Still remember all the false hope after Man of Steel came out, so it might be topic I'll cover.
@@tobiaspegues7318what about Spider-Man 4 before Andrew Garfield Spider-Man movie
lol ok so unless I am misconstruing how you interpreted the Michael Caine newspaper story....
imho hearing that & then googling for the full quote it's clear that Caine is taking the piss by telling a porkie.
Hahah so based.
man your videos are so short damnnnnmnm 😢😢😢
I don't like making long ass videos often unless it's worth the time.
@@WarpingFist respect this my dude your work are always so great that i cant help to feel sad that they are not longer
The first half of the movie works better with the riddler instead of bane, honestly Im one of the ones that believe that was the initial plan until something changed , and Nolan just reworked what he had already but now with Bane
the dark knight rises is so bad even the most insane theory of what could have been sounds much better
What are you even trying to say ? Reading all this almost gave me an aneurysm
Probably better fan fiction than what was actually written…
More importantly: Remember when wb said they were retiring the joker character out of respect for Heqth Ledger?
I remember when Justin Timberlake was rumored to be Harvey "Two-Face" lol
Much of the riddler rumors were fueled by xm radio dj Fez Whatley. An unhinged riddler fan
Sad, i have no clue who that is. They sound entertaining
It was stupid for the supposedly realistic take on Batman to include the villain that's a super strong person enhanced by a serum. Multiple Batman villains that could have chosen instead of Bane and yet he decides to show his hackiness
Bane relates to the theme of Bruce going through Pain in the movie.
