+Dr Levi Harrison Awesome video! I'll begin to do them today! Do you have any exercises that help out the ulnar nerve? Just a few months ago I've been getting RSI. Thanks in advance!
Lol I know people joke about your vids a lot Dr but you can tell he's really done his research. they actually help. Feels good not having pain in my hands when I play video games. Thanks for sharing the knowledge.
+NA Fan I'm not like you who posts comments for attention. I do it for myself and my girlfriend. Whenever I post a comment it's not for likes it's for me and my girlfriend. I don't post for "internet points" like you.
Gamers are athletes? OK mate, whatever. I'm surprised there was no exercise simulating the up and down motion of the wrist. That's something gamers do a lot. Other than that, pretty good set of exercises.
+Stormwind Champion "I'm surprised there was no exercise simulating the up and down motion of the wrist. That's something gamers do a lot." ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Thanks very much for posting. I will do all of these, these videos are great. Question: I have been having pain and tightness in the pad area below my right thumb from repetitive clicking and dragging (I'm an editor) on a Macbook trackpad, so tension with the thumb curled in a bit. Can't seem to stretch it out or get rid of it, and now the thumb hurts even when I type (I still have to use the thumb to push the space bar, and to click to select things). The two-finger scroll is causing issues as well. What more ergonomic alternatives are there? I will probably still have to click and drag to some extent no matter what, so what can I do to prevent further injury? Thank you =)
gamecrashed But how ? That is my question. I do not doubt these exercises are helpful to prevent injuries, I want to know how exactly how they prevent injuries.
Nynaeve Aylet Yeah, but it is not clear for me if his explanations only apply to the exercise he is currently showing, or if they apply to every exercises ?
Well, it does help with cognitive fitness in the same way that chess does, however I do agree it's more a detriment to physical fitness and health than not :-p
True, but most games are also designed to be played sitting down for extended periods, which is extremely unhealthy in multiple ways. I think a person who doesn't play games sitting down would be physically and mentally more healthy than a person sitting down to play.
It would have been really easy to make easy and condescending jokes towards gamers, it's super cool that you respect and understand the audience! Really informative and interesting video!
Thanks Dr Levi for the great video, and for providing an alternative to the ball! Not all gamers have a sqeeze ball, but we all sure do have a sock and lotion bottle!
Whenever I do the thumb thing, my thumbs hurt a little bit. Is this a bad sign, or could it just be lack of exercise? It feels like all the blood rushes to the very tip of my thumb and its about to explode. lol.
+Dick Killroy I'm sure he meant mentally healthy, or rather that his exercises would help you stay a "healthy and fit gamer". That or he fluffed his words.
***** Yeah, sure, he meant 'mentally' when teaching physical exercises, you got it, bud. And for the second one, I mean do I have to repeat myself? lol
Dick Killroy Alright. What he said was something along the lines of "Gaming is a great way to stay fit and healthy". "fit and healthy" does not inherently mean the physical kind, and it is a common belief that games (and other similar pastimes) are great stress-relievers and whatnot. He wasn't discussing the benefits of his exercises but rather of games themselves, so no need for the patronising and arrogant sarcasm, "bud".
Dick Killroy Why so aggressive "bud"? You know your original comment was just some snobbish statement on either something which you misinterpreted (something I've already established) or an accidental mistake on this guys part.
If I was to do these exercises like once every few hours would that help even more. Or would it be better to do it just once a day. I don't want to over do it, my mouse arm is so sore all the time so I'm willing to do anything to help. It hurts all up my forearm.
Thank you doctor Levi for being the first doctor ive ever seen take wrist and arm problems with gaming seriously. I had a question, as i cant seem to find any videos pertaining to this specific problem. I have a set of 180In wrist wraps that i use for open palm fighting and blade work when im not gaming, however i was wondering if there are any elbow/wrist wrap techniques you might know of that would be suitable for wrist and elbow health during extended hours of gameplay/work (I work from home as well at my computer and find myself often times rubbing my elbows and wrists) that would NOT take away full range of movement. this is the hardest part of the problem. most of my Tai and jujitsu wrist wrap techniques are designed to strengthen the wrist and take away a lot of range of movement. for gaming however, I need full range and an open palm for the mouse. Can you help with this issue?
Do you have any exercises or stretches for the elbows and tendons surrounding the elbow capsule? Particularly anything for Xbox elbow (or golfer's elbow)?
Hello Doctor! The following is not meant as criticism, but more as a feedback that you can choose to take or not. At around 1:35-1:45 in this video, you talk about abduction and adduction. Remember that flexion and extension is a movement that is taking place in the same plane as the hand, whereas the plane of abduction and adduction creates an angle with the plane of "the rest" of the hand. It could've been nice to maybe implement this in the video, so people don't get confused of which movement they should do with the thumb! That being said, I play computer games. So this was very useful, thank you so much, Dr. Harrison!
Can you make a video on how to keep your Reflexes fast,Gaming requires fast reflexes and in professional gaming people retire about the age of 28,just because they get slow on reflexes.
Do the forward and backwards exercises with the ball and sockj thingy act as a foam rolling type exercise, stretching the wrist and hand muscles? or are they just warming up exercises?
great video, but the backhand exercise with the ball is giving me problems; the ball always rolls to far and kind of slips away from my hand, i don't know what i am doing wrong?
Am I the only one who doesnt move much thumb while playing? Also movements at 2:04 are flexion and extension, abduction and adduction are the ones at 1:43.
These exercises may not seem like much but they are very important for having a healthy life later on. They also can assist you with any discomfort or pain that you have while gaming or doing other strenuous activities involving your hands.
who the actual fuck, needs an M.D. to teach them that "stretching areas that are connected by tendons will help keep it looser and less stiff" fucking hell.
It's gotten to the point that the fingers of my left hand are permanently tingly (particularly ring and pinky(. Will these exercises restore full sensation or do I need to do something else?
I appreciate an actual doctor that cares about the health of people that don't play conventional sports and realize that you can hurt yourself even if you are "just playing a game."
Hello Dr Levi. If I may: My hands are really, really cold. Why is this and how can I prevent this? Is this due to a lack of blood circulation? I try to stay active and make breaks from sitting every hour. I exercise (in ways that use the entire body) every day. Additionally, I do hand/wrist exercises, the ones you showed off in your first video for gamers - I do them in my own custom regime (slightly different amount of "sets" and amounts of action per "set") and I do them every 1hrs or 2hrs in 15 minute sessions, along with some crouches, putting my hands under warm water as well as walking around the house, stretching and drinking water (I make sure to drink 2.5l - 3l of water every day). This frankly freezing feeling in my hands is very uncomfortable - although I didn't feel it at all during Summer (and during that time I did the exercises), as soon as it has gotten colder now it is becoming basically unbearable. For context, I took a ~30 minute walk today in the warm weather and my hands were normal - but when I came back home, just 20 minutes at the PC and it started up again... I then did my hand/wrist exercises and crouches, for a total of 25 minutes, but this barely helped - my hands were just slightly less cold and in some 15 minutes it was quite cold and basically painful. Given that I am still a student and that I am studying IT/programming, this is most worrying...
+Rayven Hitt Keep metabolism up, good eating, exercising, sleep patterns. You can sit on your hands or put them in your pants to heat them up if it's due to the environment being cold as well.
+You just got asianed. Thanks for the serious reply... Maybe sleeping better would help, my sleep pattern has been absolute horror these past 2 weeks. I may try to start doing daily running or, at least, light jogging/walking, for, say, 20-45 minutes. I imagine having a more active body with better circulation would help.
i used to do that hand massage before a pro tekken match just made my hands feel better holding a controller but i also have RA so i needed to stretch my joints anyway. thanks for the tips good sir.
It's really great to get advice from someone who knows his stuff and his audience. I always do you exercises between gaming sessions, and I've noticed a definite improvements for my aches and pains, and have even gained some additional dexterity. Thanks Dr Harrison!

+Nikolaj Nielsen As a gamer (definitely not pro), I also say gaming has nothing good for physical health. Maybe something can be said about relaxing, but with competitive anything comes stress and no relax.
LBP2fan66 No, no he did not. And these types of hand exercises have close to no effect towards ''staying fit'' whatsoever, it may be beneficial in regards to your muscles in your hands, but overall fitness, absolutely no.
Thank you so much Dr. Levi. All of these hand and wrist techniques made me 100 time better. Every time someone asks me how to improve aim I will always link them your videos.
Thanks to these exercises, I finally figured out how to git gud, and I even made it to 10K MMR! But on the real though, the exercises do help after typing for four hours straight.

Do one for pc gamers, we dont use thumbs as much, we use index, middle and ring fingers most.
we actually use our right thumb alot by holding the mouse, I have tendonitis in my thumb from a tight mouse grip + long hours.
Try to ease up on the grip, maybe get a different mouse. I have the Qpad 8K and it is very ergonomical imo.
Thanks very much for posting. I will do all of these, these videos are great.

Thank you so much for these videos! The exercises with the ball look really good.
PS: Where can I buy such a ball this size (online)?
+Timo I use a full roll of toilet paper and it feels like sort of the same thing... But I'm probably doing it worng, though :\
+BigLord The antiperspirant+sock combo is better, since you can apply more weight without completely deforming it :p
Hi Dr. Harrison. How are these exercises exactly helping my different muscles when gaming ? Just curious :) Great video too !
