    Hey Martin (Sorry I'm not sure how to spell it) Anyway. Currently I am designing a low cost machine for recycling electric cables. It's for a school assignment that I intend to build. I learned at school initially how to draw parts and assemblies in the autodesk inventor and autodesk auto CAD (Fusion 360 in Brazil is still not very popular in the world of mechanic industry, here things are somewhat lagging behind). But seeing your videos I was very excited to learn how to use Fusion 360. And it really is a great software. Helped me a lot with the design and assembly of my pieces. With all I want to say thank you for all the inspiration and music you give us. I am really grateful to your work and I greatly admire your generosity goodwill in sharing your achievements and knowledge. I hope that you and your band conquer the world and hope to have the opportunity to see a show of yours here in Brazil. Until the next one and a big hug!

      I'm currently finishing my bachelors degree in Germany and am applying for engineering jobs. I have yet to see a company looking for fusion360 construction engineers. Most use Inventor, SimensNX, Catia, solid works or Creo parametric. Depending on the specific field

    • @Anonymouspock

      One field where I've seen a *lot* of Fusion is machining, especially of less mechanically complex products such as fixtures, vises, smaller scale job shop work, etc.

    That’s not a work-around, it’s pretty standard engineering practice to work with detail models and assembly-level models. Any CAD software will choke if you have too many parts in the assembly. I’m impressed by your ability to learn so quickly and so well.

    • @Lefers94
      @Lefers94 6 лет назад +6

      This method makes it impossible to tweak the designs though. Doesn't it. Say he wants the puzzles to be rectangles or just slighly smaller, he'll have to redo the subasemblys and the final assembly from scratch because he is not referencing other parts but a arbitrary position in space isn't he? Or does fusion recognize what he was referencing after he deletes it from the subasembly.

    • @Anonymouspock
      @Anonymouspock 6 лет назад +3

      Yes, he is completely destroying the parametric capabilities of the software, which is very unfortunate. Also I think he is trying to make the whole thing with detail models which is slightly insane.

    • @41-Haiku
      @41-Haiku 6 лет назад

      At least all the hardware he's using are just custom cylinders rather than the detailed screws et al that come stock.

    • @AttilaAsztalos
      @AttilaAsztalos 6 лет назад

      It's a kludge to work around the ineptitude of the software. Potentially very useful, but still a very ugly hack that shouldn't even be necessary if Fusion was written properly.

  • @outputcoupler7819
    @outputcoupler7819 6 лет назад +7

    Neat solution. Seems there are some drawbacks you can't avoid, though. Since the components are inserted at exact positions, wouldn't you need to go back and reassemble all the subassemblies if you changed a component?

    • @landonivy675
      @landonivy675 10 месяцев назад +2

      You could insert derive all the components into the subassemblies instead of linking them as he did. When you insert derive a component, you can check a box to include all of that component's 'favorite variables'. Simply base all of your component positions off of xyz coordinates stored in those variables and everything can be automatically repositioned down the chain if you'd like to change something in the future.

    I was wondering when you were gonna get to this stage of design and handling of the project as ungrouped pieces and assemblies make for a nightmare when moving things or working on things.
    Compartmentalising seemed a logic step and you probably thought of it long ago but balancing the project with compartmentalising and the amount of work required was probably a mind bender!
    It is time consuming to sort it all out and best done in chunks or get other people to assist with but once it's clean and tidy strangely you feel a weight has lifted from your mind knowing that you're not likely to ever encounter the issue again or just briefly.
    Can't wait for the MMX to be a physical item tho and the first demo!

    4. add a jack for an amp.

      actually i think he said he is using A. inventor

    • @Gremlins422
      @Gremlins422 6 лет назад +20

      In the episode "Marble Machine X #31" Martin mentioned that he's already invested into the current software but he recommends the usage of Inventor for large assemblies. He also mentions that its also a cost/benefit thing. (But a sponsorship would alleviate that.) Although from my perspective, asking sponsorship so you can do the remaining ~10% of work is a bit much.
      A footnote on Inventor from that video also:
      "When the Marble Machine X is fully designed, i want to take in some Inventor competence in the project and have drawings made in Inventor from someone skilled at that. AS i mentioned before, i probably need to build a backup Marble Machine X and having the whole project properly compiled by real engineers will be crucial if i am going to be able to ask someone build the backup copies for me. I wanted to see the marble machine this week, now looks like you find every week a reason to delay more with your project. Don't take me wrong, it is nice that you can handle that software but this channel is more about the marble machine than how to use fusion 360, there are plenty of other channels for that. Do you have a date to finish it? I really believe that you have to finish it soon instead of keep improving every part of it; you'll never get done with it that way. Always you'll find things to improve but leave them for the next version of the marble machine it will be nice to see a marble machine v3 after your tour. Keep up with the good work, you are a great engineer and musician. I really hope you’ll come to the UK when touring I have to see you playing that live! ☺

      Martin give us all the mood and the joyce he encouter building the MMX. How to use this CAD is one of the experiences he want to share with us..... And he seems really concern in this software. Of course each time we are advertised of a new Wintergatan Wednesday video, and at the end not on the MMX build but another subject we are a little bit disapointed.... but may be it's the time that Martin need to improve this tool, or subjet. Some of us are thinking those video are filler, but make sure Martin is working on the MMX in background process....
      Why does Martin have videos on this CAD? I think he didn't find the right way of using this tool on the other videos, and he want to give his way of using it....
      Sometimes he have a break with a nice video on how to make olive oil with a really nice soundtrack, or making a turntable..... and what? it's his youtube channel.... have a look on this page, Martin explains the goal of this channel, and it's not only dedicated to the MMX, but to the group Wintergatan.... by Martin
      Keep on Cading, oiling, MMXing, and enjoy your trip (on the Wintergatan...)

      Yes L Russel. I would like to see that too. All info in this video is still applicable as of October 2022. But you are right, the new feature “Edit in Place” and making a “in context” relationship between two designs is another option AND will make them parametrically linked.

    Very interesting process. Question: at the very beginning you gloss over this parts count command where the last value is "occurences with transform." Is this a count of all the move commands that we are trying to get rid of? If so then getting this number as low as possible is a quantifiable way to see how well fusion will run. Right?

  • @toxications

    I'm a designer, I use Inventor and I'm not familiar with Fusion but I notice some similarities. Would it be possible to share a sketch between parts? If so you can sketch the full assembly and insert each part without moving and preparing anything.

    It may look like 3D CAD programs all have the problem of big assemblies, but I have been working with Solidworks, Catia, and PRO/Engineer and neither has that problem. Yes, they all cost 10 times what Fusion 360 costs, but those are REAL 3D CAD programs. I think with this project you should have chosen Solidworks for many reasons (too many to write them all down). I work with Catia and I have no problems loading and working with way bigger assemblies than your MMX (i.e. complete cars).

There's a helical gear generator addon for fusion that does all the maths for it. Functionally, does it make a difference, not really, but for a musical instrument, less noise from the drive-train seems like a good idea.

    I'm sorry you have to go through all of this work. Please switch to Inventor or Solidworks, something waaaay more robust.

      NatetheAceOfficial Would not recommend solidworks for the part count he works with. Crashes often with a modestly sized assembly, so I wonder how bad it would struggle with a project like this.

    It's strange what limitations you have to put up with in this program. I can understand it not being designed for such complex projects, but I would expect the basic feature of movement to remain functional. My guess is the program uses some serious spaghetti code, and what should at worse be linear complexity is exponential complexity. I get that these assemblies can be combined in numerous ways, but I would expect everything to be programmed in a relativistic enough manner to handle something as fundamental as moving a thing somewhere.

      If it's doing constraint solving on all the things, then no, it's not spaghetti code. Constraint solving is NP-Hard if not NP-complete.
      What Martin's workaround shows is that insert transformations are cheap, and so following move commands should be 'commuted' back through the timeline to the inserts of the components/assemblies.

      orange123789456 (fr) in computer sciences problems are divided in categories based on how much the computation time grow with the "size" of the problem. 1+2+...+n is a polynomial problem because the computation time grow with n. Np-complete is another category where the computation time grow exponientially. Well it's not exactly like this but that's the idea

      with the software is about the same as with smartphones, they have everything you do not need, but they are fueled by resources. However, in order for someone to perform optimization, it is too expensive.

    Nice work around, the problem as I see it though is that it is not parametric, so only works once all design is done. Very nice for animation and rendering process though.

    Wintergatan, I got just one little question, when you finish the marble machine X, will you gonna make lots of them and sell all over the world?Or you want to make it an unique instrument?Because I am from Brazil and I would love to buy one when it gets finished and learn how to play it!

    so what if you need to change the round bits to ovals or the puzzle pieces need to be rectangular. Doesn't the system completely break down and you have to redesign every sub-assembly manually if you change one component, that is referenced?

    Got it: positioning at insertion is cheap (I imagine because no existing relationships need to be looked at) but moving or adding joints later afterwards means everything gets looked at, which is crazy expensive.
