Not sure if you realize (or if you are a Christian yourself) but consider how many young people this video has helped come to the Lord. Say maybe only one quarter of the people who watch this become inspired and want to follow God....that's nearly 250,000 people....which makes you one of the greatest evangelists to ever live in terms of pure numbers.

Joshua Graham is such an incredible character. Love his story, his wisdom his brutality. There should be a movie about him called “Honest Hearts”, I think it would be cool

New Vegas' got so many characters that should have gotten a lot more spotlight, like, Graham, Ulysses, the dude that explored all the caves in Zion, the Father, can't remember the name, but they all got crazy backstories
Joshua and Daniel are interesting for being two philosophies out of the same book. "Eye for an eye" and "Turn the other cheek". It was interesting to see that in this game these weren't parodies of faith or strawmen of faith. They were taken seriously and that's what made this the best expansion of any fallout game
Never played a Fallout, but PLEASE tell me Daniel is a legalist (just generally, like a follows the rules to the letter kinda guy). "Eye for an eye" was essentially part of the prescribed Judaic law (Old Testament), whereas "turn the other cheek," was an interpersonal trait given by Jesus in the New Testament. I would find it immensely amusing/fitting if these two were juxtaposed in such a way (not that this Joshua fellow is necessarily the cheek turning type, but he sounds like a guy who's trying his darndest to be something more).
@@asheblackflight1720 Daniel was the Turn the other cheek guy. Eye for an Eye and Turn the Other cheek are both true and biblical and righteous. Eye for an Eye refers to the governments treatment of injustice. Punishment to fit the crime. Turn the other cheek was about interpersonal relations.

I think the reason why Joshua works so well is because he perfectly fits in the world he lives in, a man that has seen the worst of humanity, has felt the worst pain imaginable, has seen how death and suffering is normal in this world. And yet he chose to keep to his faith as a source of light in this very dark world, a light that is nearly out but he does not mind it, he is a man of light in a world that has been plunged darkness and that's why he stands out so much from any other character in the game
Everyone forgets that he was a legate and committed some of the worst atrocities in legion history. He was the devil. Nothing he does after will erase his past. He needs to belive God forgave him because he can't forgive himself.

As a man of God myself I like to take the former approach because I find it a very poetic thing, how he discards the hate in him and finds peace at last.
@@austinmccon2759 No one forgets that he was legate, hell he's reminded of his past every second of his life because of his burn wounds and even after all he's done he feels like he still needs to do more. It's not that he can't forgive himself but that the crimes he's committed aren't so easily forgiven in his eyes but how knows that the lord is more forgiving than he and that gives him a light in the darkness.
It's the voice. It's just... perfect. Deep, rich, serious. He says these quotes in full faith of them, he isn't pretending, he fully means it and you feel it. Even when he greets you first in the cave, and he says "I pray for all good people who come to Zion", and later "God be with you", you FEEL that this isn't just an empty phrase for him. He is completely serious. And that is what makes him so likable (at least to me). That, even without knowing anything about you, he cares.
Even the opening line: "Hmm. It's been some time since I've visited... civilised places. I don't have fond memories of them. Too much love of money and ownership, not enough love of God and giving." So damn good

Wow, man, that's epic! I had never given up fully on my faith, but I was acting pretty degenerate and didn't really care about my faith all that much. Joshua Graham opened my heart back to taking my faith seriously, which I eventually did and although I struggle with trying not to do some sins more than others, I am in a much better place than I was. And Joshua Graham is one of my favorite characters, and New Vegas one of my favorite games. It's amazing what God can use to bring us back to Him.
Joshua Graham is the only character I've ever interacted with in a game or seen in a movie that made me think religion driven people can be good characters. Usually they're poorly written by religious people, or poorly written by non-believers. Joshua was written to be a good character, not a political mouthpiece. An absolutely incredible character, in an incredible DLC, in an incredible game, in an incredible franchise. Long live Fallout.
The other one I find fascinating is Matt Murdock/Daredevil. I'm not religious but when I completely understand faith through a video game or comic character I know the writers did a good job
Usually, the people who write religious people do so to attack their beliefs somehow, or make them look bad. See Far Cry trying to demonize Christians. I enjoyed the game, and especially the OST, but at its core, that was its core message.

Joshua just proves that God loves warriors even the ones who turn their back on his people. Joshua was broken physically by the legion his faith and the love anf faith of his people saved his life bringing him back to the light of God and the truth of where he is needed, God always takes back those who turn there back on him in his eternal love
Take the Book of David. Even after his fall. It's an excellent book to read, for the religious and areligious alike. It has many lessons to give. The bible is not merely a book of superstitions. It is catalogue of the many mistakes we have made as a species and what we have learned from it. We should not take it for granted.
I want more characters written like him. He is like an embodiment of Old Testament wrath and justice. Between Joshua Graham and Randall Clark’s Logs, I’d say Honest hearts had one of the most well written stories in the fallout franchise.
It still blows my mind that New Vegas has a better writing in Clark - a character who never actually shows in the game - than Bethesda has ever put into any of their characters.
He is old testament with new testament values. Remember that, for Jesus loves you and weeps for you when you sin against him. But fear not for he will always forgive you

The writers for new vegas are absolutely brilliant. I'm not sure if they are, but they certainly understand the roots of the faith and knew how to create a convincing character.
Going on a mission trip tomorrow and this message from one of my favorite characters ever, hit just right. I genuinely wish there were more great Christian characters in mainstream media. So many are watered-down, jaded, or religious fanatics/cult leaders. The good ones stand out, even if you don't share their denomination.
I try to be a man of God. I don't think I do very well, I fall and struggle with pornography, and everytime I get a victory in my life, there are 10 defeats. But I have faith that God will use my life to accomplish great things, and that he won't give up on me. Still, I ask him everyday to not give up on me.
In my perspective, young it may be, the Father is not disappointed to those that fall, but to those that choose to stay down. The fact that you stand back up after your falls and failures is how I think he wished for our Faith to be, not one of never falling and being impervious to sin and desire but of being able to walk back into his embrace and teachings for when we are in those dark, weak moments that every single soul has and will continue to experience to their dying day.
As long as you don't give up on yourself, God will never give up on you. God put faith in you when he created you by giving you the ability of being in control over your own actions at every moment.
I imagine the Courier sitting in camp with Joshua coming up to talk to them as he sharpens a knife. As he goes on, he and the Courier wander the roads of the Mojave looking at the factions and people who live there. The Courier talks with Graham of their own faith and ideals in the factions or life, and he answers with understanding and support. He relives his fall into the Canyon, and how his love of God persevered through the fire. The Courier shares a similar rebirth where they were struck down, but the flame that they hold is a curious one. Both of these survivors carry on with skills of violence and knowledge, and have the power to reshape entire groups of people. Joshua holds love and justice, while the Courier holds whatever they choose. A burning vengeance for those who wronged them and maybe those who haven't? Or a duty or passion to form the world in their image, for better or for worse? In any case, they sit at the camp looking out on the people Joshua searches to repay and help. In the end, he bids you farewell for both of you still have work to do, and may the Lord be with you. I'm not really a religious person, only really holding onto values of goodwill, but Joshua is an awesome character and if framed right (like this video), he can prove to be a good friend to the Courier, reflecting on their ideals and actions and even how they both carry themselves after both their near-deaths. Now, I don’t believe you need to be a believer in any type of religion to be a good person, but I believe that religions form to extoll certain values, and you can certainly pick and choose which values you wish to hold up. That’s fine, for everyone is different and they’re free to choose, and if they’re is any higher power that allowed life to bloom, I believe that it is our most defining features as sapient and sentient beings of having the choice to choose our own path. And I find that with great effort, it gives greater satisfaction in grasping for something that you strive towards and work towards, rather than something given. I may be butchering this quote, but I believe it went like this, “What’s more satisfying to see in a story, a villain that strives to change his ways with difficulty, or a hero that breezes his way through life because he is simply good?” Though some people do not like change, and that is understandable. The cost is always bloody, modern civilization is built upon the bones of those who died to make it happen. There is a reason why people (and indeed living beings in general) have an instinctive dislike of change; change is dangerous, even when the outcome of said change is an improvement. We are imperfect, and I believe that no being can be perfect in this world, and I find comfort within that fact, for the world itself is imperfect. A world is beautiful not because it is a canvas of only light colors, but because the striking disparity between light and dark craft wondrous paintings that show us the multicolored world. We strive and move forward to better ourselves, to change ourselves and the world to our perceived good. Everyone can learn from everyone else. We learn by talking to others, and we learn by observing others. Being human means living without finding answers to all the questions we seek. However, does that mean it would right to say that all our beliefs on this world are good? No, far from it. There is no good or bad judgement, all that is subjective. You could be helping a good person that is secretly a bad person, or hurt a bad person that turned out to be a good person. You wouldn’t know. Either way, people will form their own judgements whether you are good or bad depending on their side of the story. I’m realizing that I’m going too far in a tangent and in my opinion, an arrogant, lecturing tone, so I apologize if you see and construed it that way, so I’ll cut it short here.
I like the analysis, and honestly it’s a good embodiment of God and his wants for humans, as he himself is what gave us free will to follow him, or fulfill our lives in our own ways, be them moral or not, and Joshua can easily represent the God, and the Courier, by default of being ‘us’ is the free will to do as man will, I mean hell in Honest Hearts the fastest way to get out of Zion is murder Joshua, Daniel and the other Sorrows then dip, yet again man having the will to forsake god, or for him to help him and understand him, whether or not they truly care
As someone who lapsed into quiet agnosticism years ago, Joshua Graham was still one of my absolute favorite characters in Fallout NV. I’ve known people who share in that unshakable faith IRL, and even if I no longer have the capacity for it, it’s comforting to know that there are those who still keep the faith.
I feel a similar way, don't count yourself out on never feeling that connection again. Some days are better than others and even the most faithful have moments of doubt.
It's my belief that those who do not assume to know who God is end up understanding what I guess you would call His true nature better. It's ridiculous to believe that if there is a force with the attributes of God that we simple creatures could give them a name or a face, and when we do it only serves to aid us and not them.

Obsidian put in SO much effort to craft a compelling anti-villain in Joshua, and for all their craft and art they failed utterly... ...what we have instead is a wonderfully sympathetic and charismatic warrior of faith (both martial and spiritual) and I couldn't be happier. They went prospecting for tin and struck straight-up *gold*.
@@MrMortull I definitely see him more as an antihero than a villain given that it's so easy to take his side, and I think that's what his writers had in mind when doing his dialogue, so I wouldn't really call it a failure.
Joshua lost his way trying to Survive the Blackfoot clan, survival shrouding the beliefs of his people to protect himself and the Followers of the Apocalypse who had tried to help the tribals, thereby losing his faith in god. The need to survive lead to training the Blackfoot to fight the other tribes. Defeating the other tribes lead to leading in Caesar’s name because they had been friends. The betrayal of Caesar throwing him into the Grand Canyon should’ve killed him. But it didn’t. Crawling back home to his people, he believed he would’ve been casted out for his crimes. Instead they forgave him and helped him. Rekindling his belief in God. But his time as the Legate of the Legion didn’t simply go away. It remained a part of him. Using the examples of god’s wrath to justify when he felt the same rage that had lead him to leading the Legion’s armies against the enemies of the New Canaanites. But he is still trying to be a better man than what he was. To truly redeem himself. The only way I really see him letting go of his past is to convince him to spare Salt-Upon-Wounds. Showing Retribution and Vengeance can be tempered with Mercy and Compassion. Giving him some peace.
Fun fact. The voice actor is in Batman, The dark Knight. He's the cop who was left in the cell with the Joker, when the Joker says "do you want to know which of your friends were cowards?"

THIS, as well as Skull Knight’s first conversation with Guts, are some of the best monologues I’ve heard. There’s so much weight behind Graham’s words that it’s almost real. A man of great talent, who lost his way, and is doing his best to amend for his mistakes. Truly an inspiration.

I would like more to be written like Joshua, rather than just a zealot, if you need to make them a zealot for thematic reasons or what have you, at least make them compelling or have some reason. But then you have Joshua who believes and (zealot or not) is a functional person.

Science admits and understands that human knowledge isn't a be-all, end-all. It is a process. Believers however, claim to have *absolute* knowledge of the nature if the universe. They make all manner of outlandish claims masked with demagoguery and sophistry with no valid evidence to back up ANY of it. Science you can study and verify. It is literal study and advancement. It looks at the verifiable facts and then considers what conclusions could be drawn from them. Faith is unverifiable by design. It is ignorance and regression. It has decided conclusions and tries to cherry-pick whatever mangled remains of facts it can to suit it's narrative while ignoring anything contradictory. How about you instead ask the faith-ridden for evidence of their claims, or about the inherent contradictions in their "moral" philisophies, and so on. _Food for thought._

I’m a firm believer that Joshua represents what Christianity was meant to be. A believer in repentance and forgiveness, but acknowledging that god gives only when you’ve reached your limit. My favorite Christian in fiction.
As a combat veteran, seeing the worse evil that man can do to one another…my faith has always been…let’s just say that I go back in forth with it. I like to think. Meeting Joshua changed something in the Courier. I always got the general sense that Six (for lack of a better name.) Was a force of nature waiting to be unleashed, but he had to get there first. Meet Joshua was that first step in awakening that sleeping beast. Bringing reckoning to Elijah was the next, uniting the big empty, then finally.. Ulysses. A journey to prepare Six. transform him. Into something more than "just another courier." All of it, to make the man into a conduit for power. Just like all the rest, like Caesar, or house, Joshua or Lanius, Kimball or Ulysses. To some a hero, to others a god, and some still a living nightmare. New Vegas is one of the best stories told in gaming hands down.
It is, and I think Courier Six kind of brilliantly fits in the lore, specifically because they're at the center of so many events. I've always felt like the protagonists are kind of like a representation of all the myths and legends and culture that makes up the Wasteland. Everybody has heard of this one monumental figure in one way or another. But thanks to the giant medieval game of telephone that these stories get spread through, we don't actually know what's true, what's exaggerated, or what they even actually did. One person heard they were a tall handsome man, the Chosen One of his tribe on the west coast. Another guy heard they were a Lone Survivor, on a quest in Boston to kill her husband's murderer and son's kidnapper. A traveling merchant from the Mojave stopped in a tavern in Utah and said they were a lonesome Courier, who saw horrors and miracles on his amazing travels. Who was the real figure behind all these stories? What incredible feats did they actually perform to become such a cultural influence? Who knows... must have been a wild ride, whatever it was.

I was an avid atheist when I played through HH for the first time. Joshua Graham was the first explicitly Christian Character I didn't hate since becoming a young adult. Now I'm in my late 20's, and haven't played video games in any serious way in years, but the wisdom of this fictional character feels like cool rain pouring over me. A stoic, a believer, a sinner redeemed. In a word, a man; a true man.
Yup. The line that made me a Graham stan was “Waging war on good people is bad for the soul”. Sounds obvious, but the way it was delivered made you feel that you were hearing him speak firsthand knowledge on the topic.
You know, I've listened to this video at least once every day, and typically more, this week. Strangely, this character is one of the few instances that has made me seriously reconsider my faith or lack there of. Perhaps its simply because of the conviction in the character of Joshua Graham, biblically he reminds me a great deal of Paul, a man who did terrible things and was struck down and humbled before God. Changed utterly and for the better, but not forgetting their sins that they committed, and yet hoping, hoping beyond hope, that they, evil men, were redeemed, simply for love, that strange state of being. It definitely makes one think.

I'm not religious anymore, I lost my faith a long time ago. But this speaks to me. The idea of holding onto a spark of hope with the belief that it will get better is one of the most moving concepts we as humans have. The way he speaks in this video reminds me of that. To keep hoping and to keep fighting for what I think is right, no matter what others think and believe.
You can not simply “lose faith.” The doctrine of “irresistible grace,” in scripture speaks on this. So unfortunately you never truly had it. I encourage you to open up scripture and read the gospels. I hope you the Lord blesses you with the gift of faith through grace🙏
Life sucks and then you die. That is if you don't believe in something greater than yourself. We aren't perfect, the church has done some evil things, but surely, there has to be something better than secular modernity. God is loving, God is just, but one day He'll return to conquer evil, thankfully, He's still giving us a chance to repent. All religions are myths, but mine was also a man. God loves you, there's time, He'll always give you a chance, so give Him one too.
It's good to know that people love this character. It always irked me a little that Obsidian attempted to subtly portray him as misguided and too violent in his actions. They wanted everybody to view him as a likeable pseudo-villain. Especially when you account for his past. Instead, he's become an inspiration for many and an icon of the righteous warrior spirit that so few possess in today's world.
I don't know, i think they portrayed him pretty well. They didn't portray him as misguided per se, Given how his actions were completely justified in retaliation against the white legs. They portrayed him as someone who was willing to do what needed to be done, For example the white legs wanted to not only wipe out all the local tribes in Zion (and abroad) they also "Salted the earth" as in they wanted to destroy Zion itself. There was no way of making peace with that tribe, And Joshua grahams solution of an eye for an eye was entirely justified. It boils down to the classical debate that is very prevalent in Christian theology, Turn the other cheek, Or an eye for an eye.

There's a way you can prevent that actually, you need to either ask Joshua to let salt upon wounds fight back or convince him to spare salt upon wounds, either choice changes the outcome. Joshua is open to letting salt upon wounds fight back, but the other choice requires a speech check.

I spent all of my elementary years in a Christian school and I always found it very wise that Joshua told the player that Gods existence doesnt depend on their religion or what anyone else says, because we dont know jack about where we truly came from. Great video
The magnitude of the words of this clip`s title is not to be underestimated. Belief is more important than knowledge. Why? Because once you know, you no longer believe. You are a Knower, not a Believer. And you fool yourself into thinking that what you Know you can Understand. You cannot. Life is a test, this Earth is not our true Home. I really like Joshua Graham, and as a fellow Christian I really like how they portray him. From what I’ve seen so far he’s not a hateful person, but he’s devoted to God and His laws. I love how he says “Love the sinner hate the sin.” Many people want to portray Christians as hateful people, or bigots but true believers in Christ no matter what love everybody but hate sin because of how they’ve been deeply hurt by sin. Like for me I struggle deeply with lust, I hate how it makes me feel and I hate how it impacted my decisions. I was down a dangerous path before meeting God, and I see a little bit of myself in Joshua. A man who was down a self destructive path, who was ultimately saved by God and now wants to lead others to God because he was shown a better way to life. God bless you all, and I encourage all of you to read the word of God. Yes we are all sinners, but God so loved the world He gave His only son so that we may be saved. His story of being burned, but the fire inside burning brighter, reminds me of how I have been burning in my sins for most of my life. I have only realized recently that I have been. But the fire of the Lord’s love, and the love of others burns bright inside me, now, and I have survived the fire of my sins. I will never be able to repay God for what He has done for me, for what he pulls me out of, and what he pulls me towards. But I must try.
A major take-away I have had when it comes to Joshua is that even the most sinful among us, can be redeemed in the end. Pretty amazing that a video game character can relay that, isn't it? I have not been a man of God, far from it, but the idea of redeeming myself for God in the end is worth the wait. I just pray that I can do so before my story ends, so that I may show others it can be done.

If it brings you a certain amount of peace perhaps you should stop fighting it and search more into christianty to know yourself. Never judge yourself what's done is done. Joshua and Daniel are interesting for being two philosophies out of the same book. "Eye for an eye" and "Turn the other cheek". It was interesting to see that in this game these weren't parodies of faith or strawmen of faith. They were taken seriously and that's what made this the best expansion of any fallout game
Never played a Fallout, but PLEASE tell me Daniel is a legalist (just generally, like a follows the rules to the letter kinda guy). "Eye for an eye" was essentially part of the prescribed Judaic law (Old Testament), whereas "turn the other cheek," was an interpersonal trait given by Jesus in the New Testament. I would find it immensely amusing/fitting if these two were juxtaposed in such a way (not that this Joshua fellow is necessarily the cheek turning type, but he sounds like a guy who's trying his darndest to be something more).

I think the reason why Joshua works so well is because he perfectly fits in the world he lives in, a man that has seen the worst of humanity, has felt the worst pain imaginable, has seen how death and suffering is normal in this world. And yet he chose to keep to his faith as a source of light in this very dark world, a light that is nearly out but he does not mind it, he is a man of light in a world that has been plunged darkness and that's why he stands out so much from any other character in the game
I think what helped restore his faith was his near death at the hands of Caesar.
Everyone forgets that he was a legate and committed some of the worst atrocities in legion history. He was the devil. Nothing he does after will erase his past. He needs to belive God forgave him because he can't forgive himself.

It's not that he can't forgive himself but that the crimes he's committed aren't so easily forgiven in his eyes but how knows that the lord is more forgiving than he and that gives him a light in the darkness.

It's the voice. It's just... perfect. Deep, rich, serious. He says these quotes in full faith of them, he isn't pretending, he fully means it and you feel it.
Even when he greets you first in the cave, and he says "I pray for all good people who come to Zion", and later "God be with you", you FEEL that this isn't just an empty phrase for him. He is completely serious. And that is what makes him so likable (at least to me). That, even without knowing anything about you, he cares.

Wow, man, that's epic! I had never given up fully on my faith, but I was acting pretty degenerate and didn't really care about my faith all that much. Joshua Graham opened my heart back to taking my faith seriously, which I eventually did and although I struggle with trying not to do some sins more than others, I am in a much better place than I was. And Joshua Graham is one of my favorite characters, and New Vegas one of my favorite games. It's amazing what God can use to bring us back to Him.

Joshua Graham is the only character I've ever interacted with in a game or seen in a movie that made me think religion driven people can be good characters. Usually they're poorly written by religious people, or poorly written by non-believers. Joshua was written to be a good character, not a political mouthpiece. An absolutely incredible character, in an incredible DLC, in an incredible game, in an incredible franchise. Long live Fallout.
That's a really good point actually. Rarely do you get a well-developed religious character without any baggage included by the writers.
The other one I find fascinating is Matt Murdock/Daredevil.

Take the Book of David. Even after his fall. It's an excellent book to read, for the religious and areligious alike. It has many lessons to give.
The bible is not merely a book of superstitions. It is catalogue of the many mistakes we have made as a species and what we have learned from it. We should not take it for granted.

I want more characters written like him. He is like an embodiment of Old Testament wrath and justice. Between Joshua Graham and Randall Clark’s Logs, I’d say Honest hearts had one of the most well written stories in the fallout franchise.
It still blows my mind that New Vegas has a better writing in Clark - a character who never actually shows in the game - than Bethesda has ever put into any of their characters.

We also found Noah’s Ark hanging out in turkey, along with anchor stones marked with crosses signifying that it’s a revered place, along with altars and many other things. Look it up, it’s good stuff.

Here’s the physical evidence of Jesus and His Resurrection:
1) No persecution would have started if He hadn’t come back (the disciples thought Jesus would never resurrect)
2) The Roman soldiers would have paid with their lives if they failed at their jobs
3) there was a 2-4 ton rock that 11-12 guys would have to move (they didn’t have any help. Everyone said “crucify Him”) major L to those opposed to Jesus
4) there was a Roman seal which was a metal pin that sealed the tomb stone
5) Stealing the Jesus’s body isn’t something the disciples would do (besides Judas. Although he hung himself after feeling remorse for betraying Jesus).

I try to be a man of God. I don't think I do very well, I fall and struggle with pornography, and everytime I get a victory in my life, there are 10 defeats. But I have faith that God will use my life to accomplish great things, and that he won't give up on me.
Still, I ask him everyday to not give up on me.
In my perspective, young it may be, the Father is not disappointed to those that fall, but to those that choose to stay down. The fact that you stand back up after your falls and failures is how I think he wished for our Faith to be, not one of never falling and being impervious to sin and desire but of being able to walk back into his embrace and teachings for when we are in those dark, weak moments that every single soul has and will continue to experience to their dying day.

As long as you don't give up on yourself, God will never give up on you. God put faith in you when he created you by giving you the ability of being in control over your own actions at every moment.

I imagine the Courier sitting in camp with Joshua coming up to talk to them as he sharpens a knife. As he goes on, he and the Courier wander the roads of the Mojave looking at the factions and people who live there. The Courier talks with Graham of their own faith and ideals in the factions or life, and he answers with understanding and support. He relives his fall into the Canyon, and how his love of God persevered through the fire. The Courier shares a similar rebirth where they were struck down, but the flame that they hold is a curious one.
Both of these survivors carry on with skills of violence and knowledge, and have the power to reshape entire groups of people. Joshua holds love and justice, while the Courier holds whatever they choose. A burning vengeance for those who wronged them and maybe those who haven't? Or a duty or passion to form the world in their image, for better or for worse? In any case, they sit at the camp looking out on the people Joshua searches to repay and help. In the end, he bids you farewell for both of you still have work to do, and may the Lord be with you.
I'm not really a religious person, only really holding onto values of goodwill, but Joshua is an awesome character and if framed right (like this video), he can prove to be a good friend to the Courier, reflecting on their ideals and actions and even how they both carry themselves after both their near-deaths.

Now, I don’t believe you need to be a believer in any type of religion to be a good person, but I believe that religions form to extoll certain values, and you can certainly pick and choose which values you wish to hold up.
That’s fine, for everyone is different and they’re free to choose, and if they’re is any higher power that allowed life to bloom, I believe that it is our most defining features as sapient and sentient beings of having the choice to choose our own path.
And I find that with great effort, it gives greater satisfaction in grasping for something that you strive towards and work towards, rather than something given. I may be butchering this quote, but I believe it went like this, “What’s more satisfying to see in a story, a villain that strives to change his ways with difficulty, or a hero that breezes his way through life because he is simply good?”
Though some people do not like change, and that is understandable. The cost is always bloody, modern civilization is built upon the bones of those who died to make it happen. There is a reason why people (and indeed living beings in general) have an instinctive dislike of change; change is dangerous, even when the outcome of said change is an improvement.
We are imperfect, and I believe that no being can be perfect in this world, and I find comfort within that fact, for the world itself is imperfect. A world is beautiful not because it is a canvas of only light colors, but because the striking disparity between light and dark craft wondrous paintings that show us the multicolored world. We strive and move forward to better ourselves, to change ourselves and the world to our perceived good. Everyone can learn from everyone else. We learn by talking to others, and we learn by observing others. Being human means living without finding answers to all the questions we seek. However, does that mean it would right to say that all our beliefs on this world are good? No, far from it. There is no good or bad judgement, all that is subjective. You could be helping a good person that is secretly a bad person, or hurt a bad person that turned out to be a good person. You wouldn’t know. Either way, people will form their own judgements whether you are good or bad depending on their side of the story.
I’m realizing that I’m going too far in a tangent and in my opinion, an arrogant, lecturing tone, so I apologize if you see and construed it that way, so I’ll cut it short here.
I like the analysis, and honestly it’s a good embodiment of God and his wants for humans, as he himself is what gave us free will to follow him, or fulfill our lives in our own ways, be them moral or not, and Joshua can easily represent the God, and the Courier, by default of being ‘us’ is the free will to do as man will, I mean hell in Honest Hearts the fastest way to get out of Zion is murder Joshua, Daniel and the other Sorrows then dip, yet again man having the will to forsake god, or for him to help him and understand him, whether or not they truly care

As someone who lapsed into quiet agnosticism years ago, Joshua Graham was still one of my absolute favorite characters in Fallout NV. I’ve known people who share in that unshakable faith IRL, and even if I no longer have the capacity for it, it’s comforting to know that there are those who still keep the faith.
I feel a similar way, don't count yourself out on never feeling that connection again. Some days are better than others and even the most faithful have moments of doubt.
It's my belief that those who do not assume to know who God is end up understanding what I guess you would call His true nature better. It's ridiculous to believe that if there is a force with the attributes of God that we simple creatures could give them a name or a face, and when we do it only serves to aid us and not them.

I see Joshua and Iroh together as fictional generals who fell from their positions of power and became better men.
Joshua lost his way trying to Survive the Blackfoot clan, survival shrouding the beliefs of his people to protect himself and the Followers of the Apocalypse who had tried to help the tribals, thereby losing his faith in god.
The need to survive lead to training the Blackfoot to fight the other tribes. Defeating the other tribes lead to leading in Caesar’s name because they had been friends. The betrayal of Caesar throwing him into the Grand Canyon should’ve killed him. But it didn’t.
Crawling back home to his people, he believed he would’ve been casted out for his crimes. Instead they forgave him and helped him. Rekindling his belief in God. But his time as the Legate of the Legion didn’t simply go away. It remained a part of him.
Using the examples of god’s wrath to justify when he felt the same rage that had lead him to leading the Legion’s armies against the enemies of the New Canaanites. But he is still trying to be a better man than what he was. To truly redeem himself.
The only way I really see him letting go of his past is to convince him to spare Salt-Upon-Wounds. Showing Retribution and Vengeance can be tempered with Mercy and Compassion. Giving him some peace.
The gravitas that this voice actor show is astonishing, I could listen to him for hours.
Fun fact. The voice actor is in Batman, The dark Knight. He's the cop who was left in the cell with the Joker, when the Joker says "do you want to know which of your friends were cowards?"

Theories are tested, studies are peer-reviewed, old methods are amended as new discoveries are made.
Science admits and understands that human knowledge isn't a be-all, end-all.
It is a process.

Science you can study and verify. It is literal study and advancement.
It looks at the verifiable facts and then considers what conclusions could be drawn from them.
Faith is unverifiable by design. It is ignorance and regression.
It has decided conclusions and tries to cherry-pick whatever mangled remains of facts it can to suit it's narrative while ignoring anything contradictory.
How about you instead ask the faith-ridden for evidence of their claims, or about the inherent contradictions in their "moral" philisophies, and so on.

I’m a firm believer that Joshua represents what Christianity was meant to be. A believer in repentance and forgiveness, but acknowledging that god gives only when you’ve reached your limit. My favorite Christian in fiction.

I like to think. Meeting Joshua changed something in the Courier. I always got the general sense that Six (for lack of a better name.) Was a force of nature waiting to be unleashed, but he had to get there first. Meet Joshua was that first step in awakening that sleeping beast. Bringing reckoning to Elijah was the next, uniting the big empty, then finally.. Ulysses. A journey to prepare Six. transform him. Into something more than "just another courier." All of it, to make the man into a conduit for power. Just like all the rest, like Caesar, or house, Joshua or Lanius, Kimball or Ulysses. To some a hero, to others a god, and some still a living nightmare. New Vegas is one of the best stories told in gaming hands down.
It is, and I think Courier Six kind of brilliantly fits in the lore, specifically because they're at the center of so many events. I've always felt like the protagonists are kind of like a representation of all the myths and legends and culture that makes up the Wasteland. Everybody has heard of this one monumental figure in one way or another. But thanks to the giant medieval game of telephone that these stories get spread through, we don't actually know what's true, what's exaggerated, or what they even actually did. One person heard they were a tall handsome man, the Chosen One of his tribe on the west coast. Another guy heard they were a Lone Survivor, on a quest in Boston to kill her husband's murderer and son's kidnapper. A traveling merchant from the Mojave stopped in a tavern in Utah and said they were a lonesome Courier, who saw horrors and miracles on his amazing travels.
Who was the real figure behind all these stories? What incredible feats did they actually perform to become such a cultural influence? Who knows... must have been a wild ride, whatever it was.

I was an avid atheist when I played through HH for the first time. Joshua Graham was the first explicitly Christian Character I didn't hate since becoming a young adult. Now I'm in my late 20's, and haven't played video games in any serious way in years, but the wisdom of this fictional character feels like cool rain pouring over me. A stoic, a believer, a sinner redeemed. In a word, a man; a true man.

You know, I've listened to this video at least once every day, and typically more, this week. Strangely, this character is one of the few instances that has made me seriously reconsider my faith or lack there of.
Perhaps its simply because of the conviction in the character of Joshua Graham, biblically he reminds me a great deal of Paul, a man who did terrible things and was struck down and humbled before God. Changed utterly and for the better, but not forgetting their sins that they committed, and yet hoping, hoping beyond hope, that they, evil men, were redeemed, simply for love, that strange state of being.
It definitely makes one think.
"We have made and kept covenants with our lord god to honor as laws, in exchnage we are promised eternal salvation after this life. In a world full of misery and uncertainty, it is a great comfort to know that in the end there is light in the darkness" favorite part
I'm not religious anymore, I lost my faith a long time ago. But this speaks to me. The idea of holding onto a spark of hope with the belief that it will get better is one of the most moving concepts we as humans have. The way he speaks in this video reminds me of that. To keep hoping and to keep fighting for what I think is right, no matter what others think and believe.
This is propably the only thing we can do in this world. Finding out what is right for us and chasing it without harming others. Have a good one

You can not simply “lose faith.” The doctrine of “irresistible grace,” in scripture speaks on this. So unfortunately you never truly had it. I encourage you to open up scripture and read the gospels. I hope you the Lord blesses you with the gift of faith through grace🙏
Life sucks and then you die. That is if you don't believe in something greater than yourself. We aren't perfect, the church has done some evil things, but surely, there has to be something better than secular modernity. God is loving, God is just, but one day He'll return to conquer evil, thankfully, He's still giving us a chance to repent. All religions are myths, but mine was also a man. God loves you, there's time, He'll always give you a chance, so give Him one too.
Even if you lose your faith, you can still hold onto that sliver of hope.
It's good to know that people love this character. It always irked me a little that Obsidian attempted to subtly portray him as misguided and too violent in his actions. They wanted everybody to view him as a likeable pseudo-villain. Especially when you account for his past. Instead, he's become an inspiration for many and an icon of the righteous warrior spirit that so few possess in today's world.
I don't know, i think they portrayed him pretty well. They didn't portray him as misguided per se, Given how his actions were completely justified in retaliation against the white legs.
They portrayed him as someone who was willing to do what needed to be done, For example the white legs wanted to not only wipe out all the local tribes in Zion (and abroad) they also "Salted the earth" as in they wanted to destroy Zion itself. There was no way of making peace with that tribe, And Joshua grahams solution of an eye for an eye was entirely justified.
It boils down to the classical debate that is very prevalent in Christian theology, Turn the other cheek, Or an eye for an eye.
@@thedon9247 Right, but again observe what happens in the cutscene if you side with him. The tribes destroy each other because they became "violent". Why does it say they do such a thing? Because they "followed your example".
There's a way you can prevent that actually, you need to either ask Joshua to let salt upon wounds fight back or convince him to spare salt upon wounds, either choice changes the outcome. Joshua is open to letting salt upon wounds fight back, but the other choice requires a speech check.

But this is the waking world in which we live, there is no need to cry, no need to dream. The day will come when our Lord returns to judge us all. Until then, we must honour his laws and start others along the path of salvation if we can. I will carry the fire of the Holy Spirit inside, until I stand before my lord for judgement. I survive because the fire inside burnt brighter than the fire around me. I fell down into that dark chasm.. the flame burnt on and on. The fire that it kept me alive.. was love. Their love. God's love. I will never be able to repay the debt I owe them, but I must try.

For many of us the road is a difficult one, but the path is always there for us to follow, not matter how many times we may fall
think on it and look in your heart, we have made and kept covenants with our lord god to honor his laws, in exchange we are promised eternal salvation after this life.
in a world filled with misery and uncertainty, it is a great comfort to know that, in the end, there is light in the darkness. But this is the waking world in which we live, there is no need to cry, no need to dream, a day will come when our lord comes to judge us, until than, we must honor his laws and start others along the path of salvation if we can.

I spent all of my elementary years in a Christian school and I always found it very wise that Joshua told the player that Gods existence doesnt depend on their religion or what anyone else says, because we dont know jack about where we truly came from.

The magnitude of the words of this clip`s title is not to be underestimated. Belief is more important than knowledge. Why? Because once you know, you no longer believe. You are a Knower, not a Believer. And you fool yourself into thinking that what you Know you can Understand. You cannot. Life is a test, this Earth is not our true Home. We are here because we are broken, damaged things. We were not made broken. We broke ourselves by our disobedience. But there is a way back. Unto eternity, perfection, truth. So we are not abandoned.

I really like Joshua Graham, and as a fellow Christian I really like how they portray him. From what I’ve seen so far he’s not a hateful person, but he’s devoted to God and His laws. I love how he says “Love the sinner hate the sin.” Many people want to portray Christians as hateful people, or bigots but true believers in Christ no matter what love everybody but hate sin because of how they’ve been deeply hurt by sin. Like for me I struggle deeply with lust, I hate how it makes me feel and I hate how it impacted my decisions. I was down a dangerous path before meeting God, and I see a little bit of myself in Joshua. A man who was down a self destructive path, who was ultimately saved by God and now wants to lead others to God because he was shown a better way to life.
God bless you all, and I encourage all of you to read the word of God. Yes we are all sinners, but God so loved the world He gave His only son so that we may be saved. I’m not a perfect person, and I’m not even the best believer but I know with God I’m headed down the right path. I hope this will encourage somebody to seek God like I have, and whatever you’re facing that’s troubling you God is always bigger. He will always honor His promises to you, and He will never fail you.

My faith has constantly been shifting since 2009, but.. hearing all this, hearing Joshua’s words and beliefs that warriors can be lovers, and sinners can learn to bring themselves and others to salvation.. it gives me hope.

It doesn't matter how much you gaslight yourself into thinking that God is dead and nothing matters. The only one you're fooling is yourself. No matter if there is or isn't something waiting for us beyond this rock, this air, and this water around us, we must live our lives as virtuously as possible, for every day we are blessed with the gift of life.
Those who meddle and waste away this gift, or rather wish to take from others' gifts to satisfy themselves, will eventually find themselves in hell. Not one of fire, demons and torture, but a hell of their own making. In this hell will they realize, that their gift has been tainted, never to be the same pure essence again.

Even as an agnostic, there is still much respect to be had for a man with such drive and passion for what he believes in.
His story of being burned, but the fire inside burning brighter, reminds me of how I have been burning in my sins for most of my life. I have only realized recently that I have been. But the fire of the Lord’s love, and the love of others burns bright inside me, now, and I have survived the fire of my sins. I will never be able to repay God for what He has done for me, for what he pulls me out of, and what he pulls me towards. But I must try.

A major take-away I have had when it comes to Joshua is that even the most sinful among us, can be redeemed in the end. Pretty amazing that a video game character can relay that, isn't it?
I have not been a man of God, far from it, but the idea of redeeming myself for God in the end is worth the wait. I just pray that I can do so before my story ends, so that I may show others it can be done.

Brother the dark evil thoughts you hear are not uncommon. You are not alone and if hearing this kind of content brings about a calling in you. If it brings you a certain amount of peace perhaps you should stop fighting it and search more into christianty to know yourself.
Never judge yourself what's done is done. If you suffer from certain habits and are sick of the constant sin all around you seek God and christ. I am also currently doing the same.

My baby sister and my older brother provided me with enough money to get back home from a foreign land. I will repay them one way or another and this video just reminded me of the Debt I owe and the love that was given.
It was so refreshing to see a religious character both portrayed accurately (he quotes the Bible with proper understanding of context) and positively without being a "peace and love, self-sacrificing hippy." Such a well-written character!
