How to Set up and Use a Sundial - London Hall Antique Replica Portable Sundial

  • This Brass Sundial came from an Estate. I did some research to learn how to use it and thought I would put together a short video on it. It has a pretty high "cool" factor in my opinion. Best I can tell it's a London Hall Antique replica of some sort but I won't swear to it. This is a bit off the beaten path for my channel but you need to have and share a little bit of historical technology once in a while! The compass in it is pretty decent and it did not take lone to line up the pointer with magnetic north. One puzzle I quickly solved was the protractor on the side to set the declination of the sun dial based on your latitude. I had to do some quick research to figure out my latitude but that was easy enough.
    An interesting note I didn't mention was that this would work south of the equator (It is designed for north). The only difference being that you would line up the pointer (also called an gnomon or a style) to magnetic south.
    For anyone interested, Here is an affiliate link to a similar Sundial:

    My son sent this to me as a gift probably a dozen years ago while he was overseas in Australia. I had no idea how to use it until I too, came across your video. Your instructions were superb. I appreciate it.

    Once a portable sundial gnomon is adjusted for the local latitude it must be aligned with true north. The difference between true north and magnetic north is magnetic declination. This value varies depending on your location and also changes slowly over decades. To read civil time (clock time) from a sundial a correction is made for degrees longitude between your location and the local meridian, an Equation of time correction is made for variations in the length of the solar day due to the Earth's elliptical orbit around the sun (eccentricity and obliquity), and finally, an hour must be added if your location is currently observing daylight savings time.

    I’ve had a brass sundial compass reproduction before. I gave it to an interested friend and It’s box. I had an impossible time trying to figure out the raised curved protractor device you were showing, and couldn’t see the shadow on the very shiny brass, basically a nightmare for me. Even though I knew to set the correct latitude for my area,I couldn’t see the pointer shadow on the very shiny brass. It never occurred to me to place some white paper around it. I thank you for the demonstration on that!! I believe I’ll go and secure myself another one. Thanks again for the helpful Vid!

    is that a dessicant packet? I mean if it wasn't attached it could've been added in later so I'm not sure that disqualifies it as an antique.

    Gnomon must be pointed to true north as magnetic north will give a false reading. Adjust declination to your local area from a top map or on line.

    Wouldn't be all the point of using a such device to be able to see the shadow falling on to the marked ring of the sundial without using a piece of paper... ? In old times when it was used on see or land this sundial would be sufficient by itself to show exact time...

    • @ExtremeDIYGuy
      @ExtremeDIYGuy  Год назад

      The paper is there for contrast and to point out where the shadow falls.

    Unfortunately this ‘sundial’ is more useful as a paperweight. While it looks good, it’s a mish-mash of the traditional horizontal dial with angled gnomon (good for one latitude) and the universal dial with a thin central perpendicular pillar gnomon (good for all latitudes). I have a variation of the second type, received as a gift and presumably from a similar manufacturer, but the pillar is off to one side and this dial also is therefore useless. Might make a good diy project to turn one of these into a proper dial, otherwise don’t waste your money.

      This one is more of a decoration than a sundial, but it does work to a certain degree

    Actually...
    If "you know the time" (the "MEASUREMENT" was USUALLY DONE at 12:00 "with the Sun perpendicular above your head") YOU CAN FIND OUT YOUR LATITUDE (used for centuries for navigation).
    It was the precursor of the modern SEXTANT...
    I really Love "old ways" - no needs for electricity or satellites, and it make the job done -.
