A LOT of you guys found this pocket sundial the most interesting timepiece in my collection and asked for a video on where to get it and how to use it, so here it is.
I will show you how to setup and read the time with this contraption that uses the movements of the celestial bodies to calculate the time of day.
These are still made in Austria by a company named H.M. Kala and are available on Amazon as well.
For US viewers I would recommend Amazon as you avoid paying taxes and import duties, while the viewers from the EU should contact the manufacturer directly.

Would like to point out... this type of sundail also works as a compass when displaying the time once set to correct date and lattitude because the degrees ring is in alignment with N&S at that moment of proper time measurement. Also, the date plate North end rivets will be pointing directly towards Polaris in the daytime sky and show the N/S axis of earth if you sight along it hanging from a string along the degree rings N/S alignment while in the Northern hemisphere.
Likewise, approximate lattitude can be found in the day if you have a source of correct time, date and using the sun and a stick over a few hours to get a N/S line by setting the calendar and ligning the degree ring up N to S ... then you just adjust the lattitude until he sun dot displays the correct time on the time ring , you should show correct lattitude on the degree ring.
Lattitude can be found at night in the Northern Hemishpere similarly by lining up the calendar armature plate flat towards the ground and sighting Polaris while looking straight along the flat length of the calendar plate and adjusting the degree slider rim wire ring as it hangs from the string to produce the thinnest, perpendicular to the eye, profile of the calendar plate... thus, using it like an alidade.
Some functions of finding stars by elevation at a given time, object heights and distances attributed to astrolabes can also apply by using it like an alidade, especially if you have a very rudementary celestial or nautical almanac with an Alt/Az graduated star map of the navigational stars printed out on the back and laminated to carry with you.

If you need to do more precise long distance navigation (sea or land navigation) without batteries, a sextant and a good long term astronomical almanac (or 4 years in a row of yearly nautical almanacs) is the best. You will also need a old fashioned artificial horizon if you will be working out of sight of a natural sea horizon.
The planets and moon won't be good except for the exact year of a 1 year almanac and sun and stars only good for 1 out of every 4 years for about a decade or so.
With 4 years of annual alamancs in a row it lets you use them for the sun and stars every year as long as you know what year in the 4 year order was the last in the 4 to be leap year.
A long term almanac for sun and stars needs more math applied for preparation of taking a sighting but usually lasts about 50 years or so before going out of alignment slightly more every year after.
Stars move, due to procession, about 1° out of alignment every 70 years until it comes back round again in 360° cycle but, none of us will be around that long to see it happen, lol.
If you just want to make home (same fixed location observations to withing about 60 nautical miles or so of home) observations of stars and sun locations on certain past, present or future dates and times (like in astrology/horoscopes) or find date and time like a sundial or height of trees/mountains or depths of valleys/wells or measure distances to objects like a ship to shoreline or distance across a river then I would suggest finding a working (not cheap ornamental wall hanger) astronomical Astrolabe made for your local lattidude or with interchangeable lattitude plates of every 5 degrees for good enough approximate times of things like sun or star rise/set when traveling. They are hard to find made for current epoch and exact lattitude without spending a ton of money, which is why I designed and made my own out of wood with a some cad software and a laser cutter.

Solar Time can be off from whatever the local standard time by an hour due to DST (or other amounts based on local legal definitions). It will also be off by +/- up to 30 minutes due to your longitude. - If you are at the center of your time zone, no change, but if you are on the east end it will be fast, on the west end it will be slow. But the Kala will give you the correct Solar Time. (Thank you railroads for messing this up for us two hundred years ago.

One point that was not mentioned is a time zone is roughly 15 degrees. A person on the extreme east of a time zone and another person on the extreme west of a time zone will be different by nearly an hour despite the watch on their wrists read the same.
Good point. When not moving east or west but a few miles, you can find out what adjustment needs to be made every time you read the timepiece. Same for a regular sundial.
It's going to come in handy after that EMP hits.
Very nice - I'd like one but I'm not quite sure I'm willing to splurge that much on it. I just bought a vintage Soviet era circular slide rule this morning and that was $50, so I think my toy budget is tapped for a little while at least. Maybe next month.

The adjustment you made at about 5:30 with the center adjusts for the equation of time, I assume?

I have a dial for telling time at night. I got it from shepherdswatch.com. They have other sun dials of different types including bracelets, rings, and pendants.
The night one is cool! But as they say, you have to be in the northern hemisphere.

Reliable, yes, but quite useless inside buildings and outside after sunset as well as during bad weather. So often you will also need another watch with you. But beautiful it is nevertheless. Thanks for your nice videos. Cheers from 14°25′E

They should add in some circuitry, GPS, etc., so that it automatically adjusts for the most accurate time readout.
There's something wrong with your dial. The southern hemisphere date scale is the wrong way round. It should be identical to the northern hemisphere scale. Once you've set the date it doesn't matter which hemisphere you are in. I can't see why they've put an 'S' scale on the reverse. Strangely, the company's own RUclips video clearly shows both scales as identical, which is correct. So did they make some wrongly?
