    I have been trying to teach my husband to learn some type of sense of direction for years, and this video right here just may do the the trick! My dad taught me to learn to read maps before I could drive, and before that he taught me to work on cars and such. He told me that he wanted to make sure that his daughter could take care of herself if anything happened to me while living on my own. But I guess with today's society so many people are more tech nerd, than hands on grease monkeys. The man I fell in love with knows nothing of pulling out a front axle and how to replace the barrings. Or to drop a transmission to replace the seals and gaskets, then to put it back. I can do all of that and go camping the real way. Not in some RV camper that everyone uses now. Its a rare thing to see a chick be able to do all this, but my dad made sure I knew how to take care of myself. And now I am passing it all to my daughter so that she will be able to as well.

    wait, wait - that's too easy and it makes too much sense! Since you didn't say anything about what season this method works with, I'll figure it should apply to all seasons. Well, in the northern hemisphere. Thanks for a very concise video.

    This is only correct if your reading straddles the noonday shadow. The farther from noon the greater the error. The only days this works at any hour is on the equinoxes. Otherwise, the method can be off by as much as 23 degrees - a huge error for anyone relying on this method to find the cardinal directions.

    • @MathCuriousity
      @MathCuriousity 4 месяца назад

      Why is this error manifesting outside of noon? Please unpack this a bit more. Super confused.

      I hope your project is building a sundial...because they have to be oriented exactly North...which means not only can you tell fairly precise (within 15 minutes or less) time using only shadows, you can orient your sundial North, thereby making it precise, using only shadows. I think that's awesome!

    I appreciate your making of this video. The outside audio was fine. The inside audio was not good.
    Please set up a system so that you can use a personal mic indoors. I realize that many cellphones and small video recorders don't offer the option of external mic, but that's what you need.
    Using the camera's mic in a hard walled space invites room reverb which messes with your plosives and fricatives which are critical for differentiating words. Help yourself and us, please.

  • @jkoeberlein1
    @jkoeberlein1 10 лет назад

    You don't even need to do that, just face the sun. In the northern hemisphere you're facing south, if you can't figure the other cardinal points you shouldn't be outside. The only time I've ever used my compass was when we're out map navigating. I use it to orient the map to true north (correct the map to the magnetic deviation of where you are and you're golden!) I then pick out mountain peaks I can see and off I go.

    • @vioreldragutan
      @vioreldragutan 10 лет назад

      This is only true if it is 12 PM and you are north from the tropic of cancer, or, in the case of the souther hemisphere, south from the tropic of capricorn (you would be facing the geographical North)

      If you live in the US... I always like to think of it as East Coast and West Coast... if you orient yourself with that in mind, it shouldn't be hard to visualize. If the rock representing west is on your right, that would mean the pacific is also to your right... that fact will not change... which means you're looking toward Mexico.

      opposite as in opposite side of the equator, so the sun rises in the east, transits northward, and sets in the west. The Earth rotates about its axis, True North and True South.

      No. He did it correctly. Stop, use your brain for a couple minutes and visualize where the sun is in the sky when these shadows are being made and which direction it's traveling. It's really not that difficult if you try to think just a little.

      No. If you understand that the sun essentially rises in the east and sets in the west, you would have a general point of reference for north.

      @@thejuniorseas7683 Lmao you are actually replying to my comment from more than 6 years ago. Now that I am 6 years older and smarter, I understand that the method will be the same. I was confused 6 years ago because in the southern hemisphere, the sun moves east->north->west in the sky, while in the northern hemisphere, the sun moves east->south->west in the sky but it is irrelevant for this demonstration.

      +winkwink You are incorrect. Just visualise what is happening here. The hemisphere you are in will make no difference.
