I have been trying to teach my husband to learn some type of sense of direction for years, and this video right here just may do the the trick! My dad taught me to learn to read maps before I could drive, and before that he taught me to work on cars and such. He told me that he wanted to make sure that his daughter could take care of herself if anything happened to me while living on my own. But I guess with today's society so many people are more tech nerd, than hands on grease monkeys. The man I fell in love with knows nothing of pulling out a front axle and how to replace the barrings. Or to drop a transmission to replace the seals and gaskets, then to put it back. I can do all of that and go camping the real way. Not in some RV camper that everyone uses now. Its a rare thing to see a chick be able to do all this, but my dad made sure I knew how to take care of myself. And now I am passing it all to my daughter so that she will be able to as well.
wait, wait - that's too easy and it makes too much sense! Since you didn't say anything about what season this method works with, I'll figure it should apply to all seasons. Well, in the northern hemisphere. Thanks for a very concise video.
Samu8882 is correct. While the sun is ALWAYS on an exact East to West PATH, the direction of the RISING and SETTING sun is NEVER exactly East or West except in the equinoxes.
Your statement is true only on one two days per year. The spring and fall equinox - 363 days of the year the sun does not come up in the east and set in the west.
This is only correct if your reading straddles the noonday shadow. The farther from noon the greater the error. The only days this works at any hour is on the equinoxes. Otherwise, the method can be off by as much as 23 degrees - a huge error for anyone relying on this method to find the cardinal directions.

Very nice... additionally you may want to check out Trankors Survival Secret. You can become a survival genius with strategies that you probably don't even know exist.
Facing towards north your left hand will always west and you right hand is east. If you consider left hand is west and your right hand as east so now you are facing towards NORTH
just find out the direction of your shadow, here in NY, the shadow points to north, so remember that West is always on the left of the shadow and east is always opposite to west.
This will help me if a plane ever crashes. And then i get stuck in the wild. And im the only survivor. I think about that happening a lot when i ride plains. Like thats a scary thought. Thats why i'm afraid of planes. When i ride them
I hope your project is building a sundial...because they have to be oriented exactly North...which means not only can you tell fairly precise (within 15 minutes or less) time using only shadows, you can orient your sundial North, thereby making it precise, using only shadows. I think that's awesome!
I appreciate your making of this video. The outside audio was fine. The inside audio was not good. Please set up a system so that you can use a personal mic indoors. I realize that many cellphones and small video recorders don't offer the option of external mic, but that's what you need. Using the camera's mic in a hard walled space invites room reverb which messes with your plosives and fricatives which are critical for differentiating words. Help yourself and us, please.
You don't even need to do that, just face the sun. In the northern hemisphere you're facing south, if you can't figure the other cardinal points you shouldn't be outside. The only time I've ever used my compass was when we're out map navigating. I use it to orient the map to true north (correct the map to the magnetic deviation of where you are and you're golden!) I then pick out mountain peaks I can see and off I go.
This is only true if it is 12 PM and you are north from the tropic of cancer, or, in the case of the souther hemisphere, south from the tropic of capricorn (you would be facing the geographical North)
just a note, this is not TRUE north per se..... If this were done on a solstice it would be the actual true north as the sun is actually going from east to west instead of the tilt of the earth moving it slightly off.
The sun "rises" in the East and sets in the West. When the sun is up in the East, your shadow is facing west. As the sun moves westward, your shadow moves eastward. This shorter video *"Find North with Sticks and Shadows - The Primitive Compass"* ruclips.net/video/kZL0qGkoJIk/видео.html explains it shorter and better.
if i have a map wi th a *fake* north and a compass with a *fake* north the *fake* north will help me navigate where the true north will only get me lost

Hey this is a stupid question and I kinda know why but want a better explanation. How do you know which way is north ? I totally get the east and west part using a shadow and time but it seems like it would be easy to confuse north and south??? Does north have to do with the way the shadow moves? Is that how you know?
If you live in the US... I always like to think of it as East Coast and West Coast... if you orient yourself with that in mind, it shouldn't be hard to visualize. If the rock representing west is on your right, that would mean the pacific is also to your right... that fact will not change... which means you're looking toward Mexico.
Accurate north in Russia is wrong with this method as the shadows moves like an arc!!! Need to let the shadow move to equal distance from the pole on other side. Now mark a like to start and end. It will show you accurate north!!
I was under the impression that it was opposite but never bothered to take notice. Cool, thanks man. LIking the survival on a budget at certain stores videos too. In the process of coming up with a good survival kit myself.
TheRealAnarchrox opposite as in opposite side of the equator, so the sun rises in the east, transits northward, and sets in the west. The Earth rotates about its axis, True North and True South.
But I thought the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, so shouldn't the directions you provided be reversed (i.e. the first rock is east, and the second rock is west)?
No. He did it correctly. Stop, use your brain for a couple minutes and visualize where the sun is in the sky when these shadows are being made and which direction it's traveling. It's really not that difficult if you try to think just a little.
@@thejuniorseas7683 Lmao you are actually replying to my comment from more than 6 years ago. Now that I am 6 years older and smarter, I understand that the method will be the same. I was confused 6 years ago because in the southern hemisphere, the sun moves east->north->west in the sky, while in the northern hemisphere, the sun moves east->south->west in the sky but it is irrelevant for this demonstration.

this is the easiest video to understand, i checked others, the longer their video the more complicated it becomes, thanks!!!
In Australia it's Never Eat Soggy Weetbix
Thought south Africa was the only one that has that. Best little brick of joy. 😂

In the Netherlands they say: Nooit Op Zondag Werken, which means, never work on sundays lol.

Or, poke the stick in the ground so it has no shadow. Come back later and the shadow will be pointing East.
That's so funny because a long time ago my teacher told me never eat soggy waffles as a way to remember north east south west.
And at night, you can simply use the stars to find North. When it‘s really cloudy though, you‘re in trouble...
That's I was going to ask, how do you find North when its cloudy and you have no sun?
In the UK: "Never Eat Shredded Wheat."
same here in the US, i think this guy just made up his own lol
It should change direction before and after noon.
what do you mean, please elaborate
What a task. Sun is always coming from east and going west. Just look at the sky and save 30 minutes.
I know im a year late but thats actually wrong. Its only true in the autumn and spring.
Samu8882 is correct. While the sun is ALWAYS on an exact East to West PATH, the direction of the RISING and SETTING sun is NEVER exactly East or West except in the equinoxes.
What do you do at midday?
I can't believe there is people who don't know that the sun rises East and settles West. But it's okay my grandma didn't know the Sun was a star. SMH
Your statement is true only on one two days per year. The spring and fall equinox - 363 days of the year the sun does not come up in the east and set in the west.

Why is this error manifesting outside of noon? Please unpack this a bit more. Super confused.

Where did you get that compass? It looks exactly like the one in amra2(military simulation game)?

Excellent work...... Trust me ive tried the method drscribed here. Thanks for the upload.....
how tall does the stick have to be for it to work in inches
Awesome! great survival tip. Also what kind/brand of compass was that, towards the end?
There's a difference between North and magnetic North -_- Magnetic north changes miles daily.
in the UK it's "never eat shredded wheat"
Thanks for sharing!
if someone put you in an unknown island or jungle your going to survive for centuries KGB XD!!!!!!!!!

Not even close pal
Awesome explanation.
In Nepal it's NEWS
This is fucking epic. One if the best survival tips.

30 minutes is not a less time? After a couple of hour the direction of north wouldn't be changed??
Thank you!!
Yay New I'll never forget where I live

Have you already done the watch method as well?

just a note, this is not TRUE north per se..... If this were done on a solstice it would be the actual true north as the sun is actually going from east to west instead of the tilt of the earth moving it slightly off.
We don't have a sun here in Washington.
Show us how to read a compass like the black one in this video
Thanks! Great video
I'm sorry if this is just me but I think that the video is a little quiet.
But... how do you tell the difference between North and South of the rock?
Chase Le grange LOL
*faceplam
sailentxx The sun doesn't move. Earth rotates from west to east, and the sun APPEARS to move east to west.
But... But guize, what if he looks at the rock from the wrong side of the line?
The first rock is west the second is east.
Does this work at any time of day? Thanks.
2nd person to like, how do es he come up with such interesting stuff
Why the first mark is the West ?
The sun "rises" in the East and sets in the West. When the sun is up in the East, your shadow is facing west. As the sun moves westward, your shadow moves eastward.

Want to this for my ncc exam😁
You should point out the method shows TRUE SOUTH when applied in the Southern Hemisphere. The shawdow moves counter clockwise here, just saying.

That was good info.
Rock on the left is west? but the shadow was cast left to right.. I think you overcomplicated it?
Yes. You're right. It's not overcomplicated. Think about it for a minute...
Rock on the left means sun from the right side, it projects shadow

What out in the Southern Hemisphere? Will it be the same or opposite given the direction in which the sun rises here.
