You remember that time in the Bible where Jesus was asked to feed 5,000 people with simply 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish, and he responded with, "You think I'm going to give all these entitled brats a handout? If they want food they should get off their lazy bums and get a job," and then he ate all of it himself?

This was spoken about 4 years ago. About the time I left my religion because I couldn’t be part of the hate and fear masquerading as love and peace, anymore. This is the first time I’ve heard this clip of AOC saying this. It’s the first time in more than 4 years that I’ve felt any connection to the part of myself that loved my faith, back when I still believed my religion.

Check out Paramahansa Yogananda. (See the Wisdom of Yogananda channel here on RUclips, its beautiful.) He teaches the real meaning of Christ's words and also of the Hindu God, Krisna. Yogananda says Christ's real teachings were that we are like him, and can do all that he can do. We are immortal beings made of light, love, and consciousness. But we forgot who we were and now we just see ourselves as helpless mortals. I turned away from the church at 15 (decades ago) but always kept jesus in my heart. I always wanted a way back to him that didn't include a Christianty. Yogananda gave me that. I hope you will give Yogananda a chance. He changed my life.

That would depend on your definition of religion. That said, I feel for your apparent and understandable frustration with how those who consider themselves as Christians while cherrypick scripture from the Bible to wrongly justify their bigotry, rascism, homophobia and antisemitism. Those who do those things, may speak of God with their lips, but their hearts are far away from his teachings of love, mercy, compassion, and forgiveness without judgement or exclusion. Stay strong. And know that though you may have left the church, God, and his unending love for you is and shall be forever with you. As God's true church cannot be defined or limited by structures made by humankind.

That's it, quite simple. It doesn't empower religion to be used to translate the US constitution, based on a specific religion because that would be the establishment of a religion. A direct violation of the first amendment. It simply means no one can tell you what religion you can choose.

If you mean removal of judeo-Christian foundation entirely then you either replace it with another religion or with naturalistic naturalism in which case the cruel religious people, or cruel non religious people, have as much right to define what is good and holy law as you. You can no longer say you are objectively wrong but rather I don't like your position but it's just as valid as mine. Assuming you mean replacement of religious beliefs with non religious ones, you also lose footing for intrinsic equality of value, dignity, and worth, and so will inevitably follow that path of every nation that's attempted to hold that position, especially when a personality like Trump gains control and has the authority and responsibility of Nietzsche's super man to define good and evil. People seem to forget that the word “religion” is defined by “what one lives by”. If you live by hate and judgment of others, that’s a pretty dark religion to live by. Don’t bother calling it love...we can see and feel that it isn’t. If your religion practices hate and fear mongering that you disagree with.....you’re in the wrong religion. Evangelicals have always used the "Christian" card forever and it's some warped views honestly. The most important Christian values are about loving your neighbor and helping the needy. So policies like Social Security, having universal healthcare, supporting minorities, chartity etc. are actually very very Christian. The tiredness is wide spread and has lead to a growing part of the population to lose their faith. Because of the hypocrisy of the ones constantly invoking religion, faith and their scriptures, just to do the most atrocious things to other humans.
But then sit with their families in church, praying and shake hands saying:”God bless!” - and we know they don’t even understand or believe the words they say because their actions don’t reflect that.

The parties CHANGED PLATFORMS during the Civil Rights movement. Southern Democrats, who supported slavery, became Republicans. Johnson vs. Goldwater? Strom Thurmond (and others) switching from Democrat to Republican? “Dixiecrats” abandoned the Democratic Party (Johnson) because they started supporting Civil Rights!

Lucas Underys true, but the parties position, membership and leader ship shifted over time, for various reasons, but partly because of the common ideas of each period. I’ve yet to meet a democrat who dislikes Lincoln just for having been a republican, even when he openly admitted that he was biased towards black people, but just would not allow slavery. And most modern racists, whether they are overt (white supremacists), or covert (casual racism), identify with either the modern republicans or even the confederacy, and some republicans still defend the confederacy and call them heroes! Actual traitors that tried to separate from the union because they were being denied the opportunity to own _people_! Republicans back then fought them with the same passion that AOC does now.
Today is not 200 years ago. And sadly, republicans where better back then.
