You can destroy the Core manually with guns, unguided stuff or simply having it in the way of a missile. If you do that, you trigger the Cores as targets earlier (and get a praise for doing it before)

I liked to go through this mission with the F-104 and guided rockets. These things can destroy platforms and boats quite quickly, but you'll need to land and resupply.
This is my go to mission to test planes, adequate length and enough diversity of targets
