    You don't hear people list "having a good ending" in game reviews that often.

    • @AegixDrakan
      @AegixDrakan 9 месяцев назад +140

      He is right though. Sometimes an ending is so good that it just sits in your mind for weeks and you can't help but admire how good it was.
      I still think back fondly on SLIMES, a pretty decent RPGmaker game that, after slowly descending from "So grimdark it's funny" to "So grimdark that it's depressing" managed *the* most cathartic ending I've seen in at least a decade.
      The rest of the game was just "pretty good", but that ending made it the first game from that engine to give full marks to.

      This somewhat assumes that the majority of people who review games finish the game though and, uh, I don't think that's the case, especially if talking about non-professional (and obviously non-troll) reviews. Even restricting this to only professional reviews, they might not get enough to finish it and/or they might just be too unskilled or otherwise incompetent to finish it. [Insert footage of that infamous _Cuphead_ intro level here.]

    • @TheSimmus
      @TheSimmus 9 месяцев назад +19

      Many reviewers never even finish the game. Even many players don't.
      What strikes me as a shame, since the ending is the so important.
      Like the ending to Little Nightmares 2 that depressed me for weeks.

    • @BroadwayBrittany
      @BroadwayBrittany 9 месяцев назад +29

      To be fair, in this instance, the ending is INCREDIBLY satisfying. Like, when you get to it, it HITS and you just feel so damn good, like everything you just went through was absolutely worth it. The game has very strong start and an even stronger end, and for that, I can forgive the middle for simply being average.

    • @DeepDiveDevin
      @DeepDiveDevin 9 месяцев назад +4

      Because even games with what are popularly-considered to be "great stories" are often slave to tropes and ideas they got from copying movies and television, meaning that by the time the audience is used to the tricks enough to reach the ending, it's hard for it to feel special.

    The first half of this is evidence Yahtzee has fully joined the Persona fandom. He's officially in the "why isn't there a Persona (X+1) yet?" camp that pretty much everyone heads to after Atlus begins transparently milking the last main entry for all it is worth.

    Yahtzee's lucky he only recently became a Persona fan because the agonizing gap between Persona 5 and 6 is new to him. He didn't have to deal with the large gap between 4 and 5. Or the large gap between 2 and 3.

Arena was an actual, solid fighter up there with something like BlazBlue, and while I fully understand the niche, I am someone who already liked things like the Project Diva games (was very excited when F was localized) and the Persona series has always had a very good soundtrack, so between that and the fact it wasn't like they tried to charge full price for the rhythm games I honestly wouldn't mind if a budget music spinoff didn't generally follow them going forward.

    I watched RTGame play American Arcadia, one of the few streams I stuck around for all the way through, and Yahtzee echoes my sentiments on almost all fronts - the protagonists do have a tendency to whine at times, but broadly speaking the plot is quite well paced. At some point there's a Twitch chat analogue in the game, and it was almost more Twitch-chat-esque than RT's actual Twitch chat was, weirdly!

    As yahtzee described the gameplay of American Arcadia, I was thinking "Ugh, I don't think I wanna that", but when he said "I liked it because it had a really good ending" y went "oh, then maybe I'll give it a try". Goes to show how important a good ending can be that just the mention of having one can convince someone of playing the game.

      Endings have a lot more impact on our overall impressions of the things they end than a lot of people acknowledge. In many cases (particularly when there's limited or no postgame content to faff about in), it's the last experience we have with the game before going on with our lives, and we're naturally predisposed to remember our most recent opinion of something more strongly than any others (with our first impression being the next-strongest). Provided you don't make a point of thinking more deeply about the rest of the game, that often means that a good ending will leave you feeling like you really enjoyed it even if it wasn't actually that great and in the moment you felt like it was a bit of a slog.

    • @samgamgi
      @samgamgi 9 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah, we mostly remember "the journey", but when an ending REALLY sticks the landing, it just stays with you.
      I'll always remember and cherish the day I finished Mass Effect 1. At first I only thought the game was great, but, there were other great games, I had finals going on, it just got tossed aside when I reached Virmire, I think.
      Then, 2 came out, and people were saying it was a direct sequel, so I picked ME1 again. Barely remember a thing, so I restarted. Some days after that, I got to Virmire again.
      "Shiiiit, the weird ship can speak?" and I must've gone from Virmire to the ending on one long night, played almost until dawn. I just couldn't stop there, fuck high school, the galaxy is more important. Bought ME2 online, started downloading it, went to sleep. Woke up at noon, had lunch, and started ME2. And what an amazing start that game has, specially for one who just finished ME1.
      That was one of the best experiences I've ever had, I don't think it'll ever be topped.

      I honestly walked away from playing it with the same feeling. The story was nice but nothing to right home about, gameplay competently done but not amazing. Good enough to keep playing but nothing to fully engage. Then when the final act comes online, I was left completely satisfied. I heartily agree with that being one of the most satisfying uses of the one "fuck" I've seen in a good long while. One of the last words said, beautiful. And since it's a modern streamed show, it also has a section where you get to see the chat window, and it's one of the most realistic fake chats I've seen.

    P5T's combat was weird. Like, there's a bunch of different elemental attacks and they do...stuff? Like some of them can be kinda interesting, nuclear and hypnosis bring enemies together so you can get a combo easier...but then I never really felt like the game was deep enough for that to matter too often.

    • @spencerbowden2979
      @spencerbowden2979 8 месяцев назад

      The skills were useful depending on how the enemy’s were set up.
      Anne’s fire skills were best use first dealing massive damage to clustered enemy’s.
      This synergizes with makotos nuclear spells which bring enemy’s together.
      Haru and ryuji also have really good synergy.
      Haru being able to pull enemy’s into range and ryuji being able to knock them back being melee boosted by haru.
      The only spell I never really found a good use for was yusukes ice spells which seemingly just made enemy’s exposed but other spells did that anyway so what was the point?
      But that wasn’t really where yusuke got the best value anyway so I forgave it.

    • @infernaldisdain8051

      The problem isn't that the game isn't engaging or has no depth. The real problem is that the AI is braindead. When the AI is so simple it doesn't create engagement. Not to mention they don't allow the AI to be able to do half the things you can. Only the DLC lets you play with a more difficult version of the game, and even then, the AI is still unable to adequately take advantage of obvious weakpoints.

It's a very difficult thing to pull off; there's got to be a good context, you have to get the timing just right, and which swear you use plays a big part as well. Go too soft in an intense situation and you've underplayed it, but drop an F-bomb after grandma forgets to flush and you've sucked away part of the simple, comedic joy of the situation.
