Dr. Rios, you've captured rich truths and thought-provoking calls to action with this talk. 1) The challenge to ask ourselves, "Who is not present in our decision-making spaces?"; "Why have we excluded them?" coupled with acknowledgment that "those closest to the problem are closest to the solution". Bien hecho, hermano.
Heartfelt story. Reminds me of the neighborhood I grew up in. Communities are vital, and we need to preserve their essence. Big institutions should consider the human cost of expansion.
It's amazing how something as simple as a donut can connect people and create cherished memories. Props to you for turning your experiences into a force for good!
Dr. Rios, thank you for sharing your story, heart, and passion for inclusion. You are a consistent voice for the voiceless, and under-resourced communities NEED you.
Dr.Rios!!!! Thank you so much for sharing your story and being an inspiration for the change-makers. Amazing work that you do uplifting your community so that they may uplift others
True outreach is providing a hand up, not a hand out. Empowerment is a responsibility built on trust, efficacy & effort through "sweat equity". Leaving someplace better than how we initially found it & securing that legacy for generations to come. Thank you Juan. There is no I in me without we...
Valid points about sustainable partnerships. It's not just about donations during holidays; it's about consistent, meaningful engagement. Just one example of why we need to reassess our approach to community support.
The part of his journey that went from a vibrant community to institutional displacement is heart-wrenching. It's a stark reminder of the real impact decisions can have on people's lives.
If everyone who was a position of authority approached design with such thoughtfulness, intentionality and responsibility, our communities and our entire world would be a vastly different place. Thank you for leading with vulnerability and an adherence to truth. It is truly a blessing to have a mind, and most importantly, a heart like yours working on the most difficult challenges of our time.
Thank you for sharing Dr. Rios. Your story not only gives a voice to those who have been voiceless within community and housing displacement but as well a direct call to action to do better for our communities ! 👏🏾
So very proud to call you a colleague. You continue to make a difference on so many levels. I remember the trashbags that battered women and their children would arrive at the shelter with. They needed to grab what they could and throw it in bags before they ran for safety. We would call it shelter luggage, not trying to mock it but to recognize that this was a step to getting to safety and rebuilding their lives. Well Done Mayor!
His sisters program sounds so empowering for young people! I know it's hard to measure the success and impact of initiatives like that but I know that it would be making a difference ❤
Thank you for sharing your story, Dr. Rios, especially for those who many never have the opportunity to share theirs. Your passion is inspiring and a reminder to always uplift and center the community in the work we do!
Dr. Rios , thanks you for this powerful and truthful message. connect our work to lived experiences to improve outcomes and positive community impact , beautifully spoken. Great example of highlighting how involving those closest to the issues can make significant contributions for change- in themselves, the community, and our future.
I think the closing message about discarded donuts not being forgotten is kind of poetic, and celebrating the resilience of communities that have faced displacement and rewriting their narratives for a brighter future is a beautiful sentiment.
The power of inclusiveness in making decisions will always drive for better results, regardless of the setting! Love hearing your story and seeing how your life experiences have contributed to the successful path you have taken in life! Keep being a voice for many that feel unheard and being that powerful seat at the table!
Super proud of you. You are an incredible inspiration to your community. Am proud of knowing you and seeing your journey thru the years. Keep inspiring ❤
Dr. Rios, what a powerful message about the value of bringing lived experience into solutions for eliminating health disparities. You have identified such powerful truths, including meeting people's basic needs first and equipping them with that tools to participate in life fully and have a life that they value, "Capabilities" as Amartya Sen highlights. I applaud the great work you are doing. Look forward to supporting further collaborations that build entrepreneurship into community engaged solutions. As you know, income and wealth disparities are also key to the imbalanced power relations you've described between the community and institutions. Give thanks 🙏🏾👍🏾
I am humbled by your words, yes agreed eliminating health disparities means voices of all have power, meaning, and honor. I applaud you for the work you are doing!
The story about the city engaging with returning citizens for public safety is pretty interesting. I wonder how other places could learn from that and replicate these programs, I think it would be a huge benefit for a lot of communities
❤My credible amazing Boston Creme ... your meaning your integrity your intelligence sublime.. everyone must live their best life!! Social Justice will expand opportunities! I love you❤
Juggling your personal experiences with the realities of working within an institution seems tough... It's really impressive that he's able to navigate it so well instead of being constantly triggered
Dr. Rios, thank you for your work, your passion, your intellect, your humanity. I'm grateful to you for using your voice to amplify the voices of others.
The bit about his sister going rom federal prison to creating a national learning academy is so incredible. Such an amazing example of someone using their experiences to create positive change
Dr. Rios, you are powerfully vulnerable giving us all permission to stand tall in our truth!! Thank you for sharing the gift of you! We see you, we hear you, we feel you! Bravo, Soul Man!!!! Keep leading us to the other-side of trauma into the realm of worthiness, purpose and wellness! Salute!
The metaphor of discarded donuts and finding value in what society deems disposable is thought-provoking. We are all, in a sense, discarded Boston creams.
While I appreciate your dedication to community engagement, I wonder how effective these partnerships are in the long term. Are institutions genuinely committed to addressing root causes? Because in my experience that road is often like a band-aid solution.
I appreciate the personal narrative, but let's not oversimplify the challenges. Engaged scholarship is great, but systemic issues require more than localized strategies.

Bien hecho, hermano.
This man is a bright light in this world. Mankind 2.0.
I appreciate how he points out that communities have diverse needs. It is spot on and not easy to navigate the intersections of identity.
Encouraging more diverse representation is spot on. It's the only way to ensure decisions are made with a broader perspective

As members of a community we should all have equal voices when development is involved.

Communities are not just problems to be solved; they are fountains of untapped potential.
I agree, the call for transparency in institutional leadership is crucial.
thank you for watching and I agree institutional leadership is crucial and needed in order to ensure we are not silencing voices.
Venceremos! Thank you Dr. Rios for speaking to the experience of so many people that are voiceless.
Allowing the people of the community sit at the table is the best thing to pour into the growth of the community !

What a logical way to prevent recidivism, training members of the community to become peace makers.

We need more advocates who bridge the gap between academia and the streets.
Excellence 🐐
This is what grassroots movements are about-recognizing the power structures and fighting for inclusion and justice.

Hi
Not sure if this is about donuts or community development. Too sentimental for my taste.
Mmm
