Finding a Junkyard Goldmine For The Auction Biohazard Civic Hatch | Part 5

  • While at an auto auction, I came across this 1997 Honda Civic EK Hatchback. This was categorized as a biohazard with no key. I saw it and decided to roll the dice and buy it without knowing the condition of the engine and transmission. I grew up wrenching on these old Honda EK Hatch's so this one felt special to me and I wanted to save it. After detailing the interior and getting it running, I set out to find some parts at my local junkyard and found some amazing stuff on a civic ex.

    You can swap the speedo from your DX cluster into the EX cluster so you can retain your original mileage, I think it's like 4 tiny screws on the back. If you're interested I have an Si cluster for sale

    I would recommend picking up a manual first gen CR-V cluster. Plugs right up, everything works and has a tach gauge. Not to mention it looks a lot cooler than the EX cluster and it lights up amber. I got one sitting in my closet that I had in my 96 hatchback lol

    Those ex steering knuckles are actually worth something, and starting to get hard to find (at least in my area). I ended up paying over $200 for my set because I needed them and got impatient.
    What’s so great about ex knuckles you ask? You need them if you want to do the “poor man’s brake upgrade”, which is:
    * ex front knuckles
    * ex front brake hoses
    * ’97-‘01 CR-V front calipers
    * ’07-‘11 MINI front rotors (280mm)
    * 04-10 TSX or 99-03 TL base pads
    This brings your front brakes from 235mm to 280mm. Pretty good upgrade for all off the shelf parts

    My tip for pick and pull yards: bring cash, try to buy at least 3 things, then you can also negotiate with them.
    I have usually been able to get them down at least 30% from their original quote.

    No kidding about junkyard prices increasing. With the new car shortage, used cars (and the the parts to fix them) have gone up like everything else! Back in the day (1990s), I remember “hood pulls,” ie pile what you want on an old hood and drag it out. You could get an insane amount of stuff for so cheap! Now a lot of junk yards don’t even let you into the yard anymore.
