“Since men first bent to grab a rock, he armed himself” Reminds me of my grandfather, growing up Mexican I always learned life lessons with my grandparents, they have always got a new thing to teach you.
I grew us a white kid in San Diego because my dad was in the Navy. I lived five minutes from the borders. I learned more things from Abuelas than I did in school. I also ate more, and far superior food, in their homes. I was always treated as a member of the family, no matter whose home I was in. I was simply Mijo.

Those old timers have a lot of wisdom from all the years they lived, sadly now a days people don't seem to appreciate their elders. If you have grandparents or even your dad/mom try sitting down with them and ask them about their lives you'll be surprised what you can learn from them

Even though im sure tbey could tell i didn't have the coin to drop on one of his pieces they were more than happy to showcase his work as though I was a paying customer. Live how Vice has found out about this talented and humble Treasure of a man 🙏
I can assure you with my experience When your selling high end products, not all is what it seems 80% you would be right but the other 20% the customer would break all prejudices about the industry you are in and the product you are selling So the best thing to do is treat everyone as if they can afford what your selling, you won't miss a heart beat that wag
Largely agree, this was fascinating and I clicked on it way faster than I have in the past with some of VICE's videos. They did great work finding this.
That title brings no question to the viewer. It makes them feel like they are gonna learn about dishes more than they will the guns. But either way the title was pretty shit
Pretty sure it was just a bit to get more views. This definitely deserves attention as a craft but they have to make money somehow. So by making an attention catching title they receive more views, that's just how it works and it will progressively become more and more click baity as we advance into the future. There's really not much to say except sulk in the comments, just save your time on ranting about the video and get on with your day with a nice cup of Joe or a plate of eggs and bacon. Lifes too short to complain about Vices Sketchy Business practices
It’s unfortunate that none of his children wanted to continue his work, I’d be honored to have a parent with those type of skills and not only continue his legacy but do my best to perfect it
The guy was correct though. His job will be a thing of the past because of laser engravers. You can design everything on a computer, put the gun frame into the laser engraver and push "go."
Laser engraving will simply just be a new part of the market for people who cant afford to pay for hand engraving. Which is totally fine. However I believe that hand made products will always have a place and people will continue to pay for handmade work. “Useless” and “skill” can’t go in the same sentence if someone is getting paid well for their skill. I am both a metal fabricator and hand engraver . Hand engraving makes me more money.
I would never consider laser engraving over traditional methods. This man puts his soul into his works, machines are soulless and the difference can be felt by the spirit.
@Abel B. stop assuming things about me. I wouldn't complain about his money even if he was a douche because someone else's crimes don't make him a bad person especially because he isn't helping the buyer commit crimes by making the guns more deadly or anything he is just making them look nice.

So true, yet those same people with no skills are the ones who are most times arrogant and think they know it all and this guy who actually has a talent like that is humble and even works on the side as a dish washer to show he's truly humble from the heart
First of all It needs to be in your blood and culture not even his son being his blood wasn't able to inherit it so what makes you think anyone else could learn unless your from his era which is chisle and hammer per say.
I don't know why but I kinda feel sad for him. I think he also does, he's sad because he's the last one doing this and you can feel the passion on his words
That is not what he was saying. He was saying that as good as he is, he can always improve. It is called humility. He has been doing this for 50+ years, and is probably one of the best in the world. But as he said, most engraving is machined and chemically altered - he is using hand tools alone. Btw, Jiro the sushi master said much the same when awarded his michellin stars, don't take those quotes literally.
@Marksman King Well we don't know enough to make that statement. All we I now is that he has a restaurant and he didn't want to take up the engraving trade. Yeah ots sad his dad doesn't get to pass it on, but is that really shithead worthy?
Marksman King if that’s your opinion that’s your opinion but if he wanted a different path in life that’s his choice yes it’s sad he didn’t pick up engraving like his father but if your dad did engraving would you do it too? Maybe not. I think he loves his dad and mom and they love him. But if you think he’s a shithead from seeing 3minutes of his life I can’t stop you
Marksman King I got the same vibe. The dude seems like a douche. You can easily tell just by looking at his aunts expression when he told her to “hold it right” in Spanish 5:18

Reminds me of my grandfather, growing up Mexican I always learned life lessons with my grandparents, they have always got a new thing to teach you.
All the men in a Mexican family has the best life lessons and very knowledgeable

Those old timers have a lot of wisdom from all the years they lived, sadly now a days people don't seem to appreciate their elders.

that sounds like a video about washing dishes not gun engraving. lol
Vice is liberal and racist remember..
It’s unfortunate that none of his children wanted to continue his work, I’d be honored to have a parent with those type of skills and not only continue his legacy but do my best to perfect it
Such fax
The guy was correct though. His job will be a thing of the past because of laser engravers. You can design everything on a computer, put the gun frame into the laser engraver and push "go."
Yeah man the hand craft is amazing but laser engraving will soon completely take over
Laser engraving will simply just be a new part of the market for people who cant afford to pay for hand engraving. Which is totally fine. However I believe that hand made products will always have a place and people will continue to pay for handmade work. “Useless” and “skill” can’t go in the same sentence if someone is getting paid well for their skill. I am both a metal fabricator and hand engraver . Hand engraving makes me more money.

I don't think so
Maybe it's a rare thing for gun carving, but for other things it's not
Even some blacksmith nowadays still can do it
That is not what he was saying.

I think it's supposed to indicate that many people on the outside may not seem special or important (dishwasher ain't exactly a prestigious or glamorous job) but even the incredibly ordinary seeming folk have hidden talents, tradition, and value that you would never guess yourself. "People are more than what's on the outside." *Hopefully* I'm not just overanalyzing the title, but if I am it is an odd way to word it.
