2023, still the best option out there right? The Nano lemondrop seems cute, but isnt as much hands on I think? I'm in love with this hardware dedicated granular synth!
Someone asked in the chat about sampling on the GR-1. Yes, it _can_ do it. Via USB. Use a Behringer UCA222 or Sweex sound dongle, Soundblaster Play!3 or even a Focusrite soundcard and you can do live sampling and manipulation.
actually it accepts any "class-compliant" usb soundcard. anything we've thrown at it works. the multichannel soundcards are still untested, though. but we suspect some may not be class-compliant because they offer more functionality.
Ableton live has grain synthesis in its warp modes as well as some max devices and grain delay. For any one interested in experimenting with grain synthesis. Simpler and sampler can also use (warp mode-texture)
NOW I get to see it. After playing with a couple newer Reason REs that offer similar approaches/engines, I have to say it can generate some seriously cool, atypical stuff in the way of sound. Thanks for sharing Gaz.
Takes me back to the nineties with Gareth Whittock getting all excited about granular synthesis. I had a subscription to Granulab back then. Then Steinberg came out with VST plug-ins doing things granular. Interesting to see some hardware dedicated to it though. Re subtractive synthesis. Of course it was the original electronic synthesis. Then it was old hat and noovelties appeared like FM, wave synthesis, sampling etc. Then the cycle came around again and it was all the rage once more. Is it waning yet again ? History is looping. It does that.... ;^)
I think at the moment we are very lucky. We've got a grand mix - in my two modular rows I've got a Buchla style complex oscillator and randomness , physical modelling, traditional east coast (including a UK intrusion in the form of the Wasp filter) AND granular! I've got hardware wavetable and Fm and I have apps and plugins that do all those and more. Compared to when I was young and the idea of even owning one synth was _way_ beyond my reach we are living in a time of riches
indeed and there are different price points that make it open and affordable at all levels. So many choices too from affordable to boutique FM, wave table, analog, digital it really is mind boggling the choices today that were not possible only a few years ago.
Picked mine up from the Tasty Chips guys last week at Superbooth.. such an incredible machine.. nothing really like it.. such a brilliant and creative instrument. Can't believe you didn't plug in a USB stick with some samples on Gaz!... It's crazy with acapellas
Very interesting to have this in hardware. I guess this can also be a wavetable synth can it? I'm curious what happens if you load in waldorf wavetables.
Granular is my favorite method for design and film atmospheres...Hopefully a true utility for recording with a microphone . Peace 👽❤️🎶🐕🐕✌🏻🔦🛸🙏👍🏻👏🏻Christo
it seems like maybe a max "density" cap that was more inline with the processing capabilities would address the stuttering? who knows. (the dev does! lol)
Ooops, finally found it... 32 bit is pretty damn impressive, and I'm seriously in the market for a hardware granular synth. I'm so tired of mucking about on the computer in order to do granular. Thanks for posting this!
Ouch.. this produces way too many pops and clicks for a 850€ machine right? it seems the raspberry pipe inside doesn't take the load for the granular capabilities when pushed some parameters.. Also, MIDI is way too steppy to scroll samples with the granulator.. are OSC controllers supported? what is the ethernet port for? Cheers
The falcon is software, you need a laptop or whatever. You can take this thing out and play live, and the interface is great. Falcon is absolutely useless to me in a live situation.
nice job Gaz, between you and loopop I'm sold and the GAS is in full effect it's a lot more money than the MicroGranny but it has so many cool features and it's a lot cleaner so it is truly superior - the CV feature are wild I love Borderlands, Samplr, Quanta, Curtis, Tardigrain, and the Apesoft series of granular apps on iPad, but they are harder to customize and completely control compared to this unit. Saving my pennies... Oh, and cool Prisoner reference. :-) One of my favorite series. Jools Holland made a great parody of the opening segment: ruclips.net/video/VFDLi06MVK8/видео.html
I understand that this is an Arduino board in a nifty piece of hardware. Having said that it filled with V A S T potential...too vast. Need longer lifespan :) !!
Thomas Hoffend I guess there are still enough gear heads around that coming out with new mediocre expensive hardware is still lucrative. I would have thought that new gear would not have a chance by now unless it was incredible and did something very special or different.
It seems like a lot of money for what you get. It should at least have a microphone in port and be able to to store your own recordings directly. That’s not a lot to ask.

Why not just build a model with audio inputs?
@Eli Gatlin I would suggest flixzone. Just google for it =)

Great machine, saw it live and now I’m awaiting it for delivery this year.
Drones at my fingertips
Thanks Gaz !
Very cool piece of kit !
Great demo!
Nice demo ... Got excited when you randomly mentioned knower!! They’re awesome and Sam Wilkes is one of my favorite bass players! Cheers!

Don't know what I enjoyed more.. the Synth or The Prisoner quote :D Thanks Gaz!
Awesome vid gaz! Excited about this, just ordered one! ✌️🎹🎶

It was only a matter of time before this caught on. We could do a bit of this in Ableton Live for a while, but now it's taken off!
stoked you got to see Knower. i hope to see them at some point myself. they rip.
New subscriber. I came across your review of the gr-1 and now I’m hooked!
Picked mine up from the Tasty Chips guys last week at Superbooth.. such an incredible machine.. nothing really like it.. such a brilliant and creative instrument.

Does this support sampling external audio yet? If not any recommendations for a hardware sampler/synth that does?
The buttons don't look fitted to the case properly - there is a thin gap of different widths around them.
Thanks for the introduction! I ordered mine today :)
You don't show it on your YT channel, why not? aren't you using it? I'm thinking of getting it myself :)
Bit like wave table, but fun to check out.
Very interesting to have this in hardware. I guess this can also be a wavetable synth can it? I'm curious what happens if you load in waldorf wavetables.
Have you ever used the Groovesizer RED? I think it would be right up your alley.
Looks fun, along with FM and wave table digital VA synths this would be awesome for cinema pads and soundtracks.
Ganz toll erklärt, danach habe ich mich auch für den GR1 entschieden, leider ist der noch unterwegs, danke...
But why is the sound from the GR-1 granular synthesiser just in the left side in the sound image?
Wow! That is impressive indeed. Need to check this thing out for sure.
Curious if it could be rack mounted into a 19"?
I own this. Does not seem to be intended for that. It’s a module.
And there I was looking for a video on the Roland GR-1 ;-).
Granular is my favorite method for design and film atmospheres...Hopefully a true utility for recording with a microphone . Peace 👽❤️🎶🐕🐕✌🏻🔦🛸🙏👍🏻👏🏻Christo
what is the Ipad app he was referring to ?
can you play something, using the fader + swapping samples. kind of beat making with no sequence, juste swapping the fader + switch samples
I wish omnisphere did a similar hardware kit
They just announced a new v2 update.
live audio input, or all pre recorded?
Still waiting to hear someone make this sound good or even interesting
tjs6025 there are plenty of videos of this synth on the internet, I’m sure there’ll be something good
it seems like maybe a max "density" cap that was more inline with the processing capabilities would address the stuttering? who knows. (the dev does! lol)
Hey Gaz... What's the max bit rate sample this can play?
Ooops, finally found it... 32 bit is pretty damn impressive, and I'm seriously in the market for a hardware granular synth. I'm so tired of mucking about on the computer in order to do granular. Thanks for posting this!
Ide still holdout for the Waldorf Quantum...but I will still be holding out for years. 😂
ADHD Synth , you can buy it now
Whens your next live stream Gaz?
Thanks.
where can I buy one ?
Gaz is whispering so he doesn't wake up his mum...
Ouch.. this produces way too many pops and clicks for a 850€ machine right? it seems the raspberry pipe inside doesn't take the load for the granular capabilities when pushed some parameters.. Hei, thanks for doing these, Gaz
Looks cool. But that price needs to come WAY down. Falcon has multiple grain streams and costs half as much.
Well, I won't knock it too hard because it does look awesome.
The falcon is software, you need a laptop or whatever. You can take this thing out and play live, and the interface is great. Falcon is absolutely useless to me in a live situation.
Welcome welcome welcome GR1 😁
Hi Gaz, Did the clicks sound like the usual granular artefacts or did it feel like the CPU was struggling?
ConstantLittleGhost Grain artefacts I reckon but I’m not sure

Wow uploaded march 19, my birthday
Gazz looks very wizard like here. 🎶🎶🙏🙏👽👏🏻✌🏻🔦👍🏻🐕🐕🛸🕺🕺Peace Christo

Love it but the price is over the top! 👍✌️
...and thanks Gaz for being ! - chubscribed
This is an interesting synth but in my opinion granular synthesis is still best in the box.
Thomas Hoffend I guess there are still enough gear heads around that coming out with new mediocre expensive hardware is still lucrative. I would have thought that new gear would not have a chance by now unless it was incredible and did something very special or different.
You have no idea what granular synthesis is.
A Neutron video came up in my feed but I couldn't watch it, now it's disappeared? What gives? :(
WokeUpScreaming apologies that was my error I’m afraid
Ah okay no worries dude :)
TARDIGRAIN on the iPad is $4.99. Just Sayin' :)
Yeah, but $4.99 for HUGE functionality. Come on :)
Yeah really, Super nice app with a better sound engine (thanks to the iPad processor) than this units (arduino).
who thumbed down the Gaz ! This is a cool device

Umm...call me Mr Stupidy Trousers, but what's a "raspberry pie"?
I was looking for a review and now I'm more confused because you have no idea what you're doing
DeathValleyWarthog hey stinkbag what’s happening?
Hello?
The screen is awesome.
If I were a rich man,
Daidle deedle daidle

Someone screw the screw in on that midi jack!
