If you’re just getting into growing your own food, herbs are a great place to start. You’ll need to keep a few rules in mind, but otherwise, growing herbs is a cinch.
PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:
Plant chives about four weeks before the last frost or plant in fall in mild climates. They need well-drained soil amended with compost.
CARE:
Chives are not finicky and tolerate neglect, but will do best if you don’t completely ignore them. Water and fertilize occasionally with an all-purpose liquid plant food and divide crowded clumps every two to three years. If you harvest the leaves often, fertilize every few weeks.
MAINTENANCE:
After the first killing frost in autumn, cut the plants back to ground level. They will return the following spring. In sub-tropical climates they are evergreen, but you can cut them back anyway to refresh the foliage.
-----
"Herbs are incredibly useful, but also are beautiful and fragrant. I have herbs planted everywhere throughout the farm. You’ll find them in the vegetable garden as well as in containers by themselves and mixed in with flowers for a decorative element that’s also functional." ~ P. Allen Smith

Good morning from a rainy Wednesday morning in Trinidad.I started with just four chinese garlic plants and now I have more than enough to share with my neighbours and friends.👍💕
The flower on the chive is so delicate and pretty
My wife is from Wuhan, China- she makes gyoza (pot stickers, or dumplings), using finely chopped garlic chive leaves as the main seasoning to the ground pork filling, along with (of course) grated ginger, salt and pepper. The chives are *insanely* savory, and make the gyoza smell as good as they taste!! You can serve them boiled or fried- I prefer fried.
Thanks for your (always) wonderful videos!
So Allen, the evening after watching this video on how to divide garlic chives, I was invited to some friends to have a relaxing evening of wine in their garden (socially distanced of course). I recognized a large patch of garlic chives and got really excited, so they let me dig some up to bring home for my yard. What a coincidence, and the flowers are delicious! Thank You, and I enjoyed seeing you at the farm this past June.
I’m going to be looking for the Chinese garlic chives, thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊
I had never heard of the Chinese Chives thank You very much on educating me on this herb. I’m going right now to buy some (I love making soup for the fall).
Really nice video, thank you for sharing.🙂
👍💟Definitely going to grow Chinese chives next spring! Thank you!🥰
I planted hyssop on your recommendation this summer, and love it. The bees were clinging to it while I was planting it. I bought an old cape this spring and accidentally dug up some garlic chives while clearing the veggie patch. I just found it flowering out of the side of the compost heap, so replanted it in the flower beds. It hasn’t missed a beat!
My garlic chives have survived in server drought here in California they went with no water all summer and came through it just fine. I love them for cooking and just looking at in the garden.
Karen Bowers so tough! 💪🏻
I love to cook, garden, and eat 😉
Very pretty
I'll get them next year, to plant in pots!
I do have them. They are wonderful !
The garlic chives I have grown have been fibrous on the ‘leaves’. Love the flowers, but the leaves are stringy and not fun to chew. Do you know what I could do to make them more delicate? Thank you for this video! My fav is onion chives, flower and “leaf”.
Nice video I'm going to plant some
Careful, it's invasive and will spread everywhere. I spend a lot of time removing them from crevices between pavers in the patio, and edges of my garden. It's a lot of work! However, I love them for salad and cooking! They will overtake your garden!
I hope you will make a video of your bees.
I'll stick to native garlic, thanks anyway. I love collecting seeds.
Do you sell the seed heads from your garlic chives? I'd love to buy a few heads from you. If possible.
Lisa Brown-wigginton come visit me and I’m sure we can accommodate. www.pallensmith.com/tours 😁
I think I have your chives but the plant was called Society Garlic. Is this another name? I love your programming!
Good afternoon Allen..i have a question. I did read your article about doing horseradish in the spring. My question is can i do it now this fall? My uncle always said to harvest in any month with (ber) in it. I value your opinion so im not digging it up til i get the word from you. By the way I'm in Pa.
I am new to your channel but I have watched you on TV for years. I am looking forward to learning more about veg. gardening, we just bought 7 acres!! we garden in zone 8a also. I love garlic and am excited about herbs. is it best to grow garlic chives in pots?
Patricia Bettis thank you! You can, but I use them everywhere! Make great border plants.
I was wondering if you have ever done a tour of going through your honey beehives to harvest honey
Aaron Gonzalez we’ve done whole shows on them. Not sure if we have one up on RUclips or not.
Beautiful!!!
Are aphids a problem?
Bx R I haven’t had any issues!
Do you plant 1 chive separately and it will grow into a plant?
Where can I buy the Chinese garlic chives from?
Cottage Keeper mine were gifted to me. You’ll have to come to the farm to grab some! :)
That would be a joy to my heart ❤️ thank you
@@cottagekeeper1044 If you can't make it to the farm... I've seen a few places online that sell them. But what fun is that?
