When my son was small I would have him grow the vegetables he didnt like. When the vegetables were ready to eat he would try eating them. most he loved. His favorite after school snack was spinach. to this day it's still his favorite thing to eat and hes in his 40s

I can't wait until next spring to try tulip blossoms in salad! I don't feel like such a freak now after watching Allen eat right out of the garden. That is my favorite way to eat veggies....hot from the sun and FRESH! Thank you for including so much information and making it seem like we are walking through the garden with a friend!
Since last year i want to add Russian Sage and Verbena in my flowerbed. Due to Lockdown wasn't easy to visit the garden centers. Hope i have better luck this year. Keeping fingers crossed that my Peonies flower late spring.

I know this video is 4 years old, but I'm going to comment on the beautiful peony garden and just say that I'm from Pennsylvania, and we do have many varieties of peony available to us, but I'm quite surprised that he doesn't have any staking around his at all. Once ours start blooming heavily, it only takes just a bit of rain to have them all laying flat on the ground for the sheer weight of them. It can be quite the task if you have a lot of them, but well worth it for the show they put on.

Indeed! We need to learn to share with other species. The part where the salvia was planted specifically for the pollinators was beautiful. I do this too with regular sage, borage and other flowering plants.

Have you ever made Chive vinegar? You can drop chive heads in a bottle of white vinegar, and keep them there until the vinegar turns a light purple, then remove them. Use the vinegar in a salad and drop the chive heads on your salad, too
I love it! Make it every year. I think chive heads are marvelous and so often underutilized. 💚

I am planning to plant collards in containers this spring! Also, lettuces( red leaf romaine) and green leaf and spinach of course. All organic.

Instead of using treated pine for the raised beds I would use shou sugi ban. Its a natural technique from Japan to naturally preserve wood without chemical treatment for 80-100 years. Great show and I appreciate your concern for earth friendly methods.

I agree with saving the precious rain water- is hard work carrying a lot of jugs but all my plants are so healthy- our community water source is awful on my plants so kinda makes me wonder how good it is for us!,

Just beautiful. I like the diversity of your garden and the embracing of a better life. I especially loved the peonies and sage. I am sorry to see the cut down trees. I love trees. 💕
Stumps = seating to rest, table space for tools or basket, bird perch to spot and eat bad bugs, or as a base for a sculpture or even a pot of cascading something or other.
The branches cut might have been used to make homemade teepees for growing vining beans, or homemade obelisk supports for flowering vines, and the twiggy sticks make pretty nice peony supports for when the blooms get heavy and want to lay on the ground, just stick the large twigs all 'round while the peonies are small. If the trees were large enough, the trunks could have been cut into board lengths for making raised beds for peonies and sage.

Those large bees with the shiny black bottoms are carpenter bees, they bore into wood. The last bee (yellow) on the flower looked like it was on a Lilly was a honey bee.

If you cut that russian sage all the way down to the ground in the late fall it will come back brand new with no old wood. :)
I love your gardens! Flowers in any garden are a plus, they bring in the pollinators and some (like marigolds) are a natural deterrent for unwanted garden visitors. Where do you get your heavy metal edging for the beds? I've used wood for my raised beds in the past however it doesn't hold up to the elements as long as I would like it to.

I love your videos. Your voice is so relaxing, and you give so much great information that I've been using in my gardening. I live in North Carolina, so we get a lot of pollinators naturally, but I grow plants specifically to attract them since I read about how they're becoming endangered. I'm learning the ropes of vegetable gardening from my mom, and she uses raised beds as well, but she has them on gravel platform instead of directly on the ground. Seems to really work, but we have problems with rabbits and deer getting in. Do you have any advice on how to keep them out?

At 6:45, the pots that had tulips and then pansies, do you lift the tulips to save, plant over top, or dispose of the bulbs to rotate your plantings?

How do you get the peonies’s stems to grow strong enough to hold the weight of the flower?
Can a raised bed be put on top of a concrete slab? My boys use to play basketball on this slab when they were younger. I have 3 4x4 lifetime beds that I would like to put it on this slab if possible. Any tips for this. Thanks very much.

Love peonies. We have about a dozen, but I keep having to dig some up and move them because if they get too close, they all get powdery mildew. See all of yours planted so closely, I am seeing powdery mildew in your future. Hope I'm wrong!
