Looking back before finding Christ last year, that life of porn and video games was like a prison....16 years trapped in a corner on auto-pilot, numb, being isolated, just a couple friends time to time, no community, parents worked non-stop; thankful for what they were able to teach me though they left out very important things like manhood. Am thankful to be free from alot of things now, have accepted what I've lost and possible outcomes. Just started a new job and was filled with energy exercising and doing all the things I needed to do, then slowly I noticed when I played a video game for even 30 minutes near the beginning of my day, the whole day got harder and I was in need of energy, its not placebo, there is something demonic about video games when you play them daily, it can become an idol, also its a completely different reality that you are looking at through pixels on a screen, if you think about it, its a person being convinced to look at blue light for an extended period of time, and when a person does this so much knowing its consequences, it begins to become addiction and insanity, the process of doing the same thing over and over again. We need to change

James 1:21-22 ESV - Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
Can you imagine the early church if they'd been distracted by such frivolity? Those men were on fire for the Lord and zealous to do His will.
Psalm 90:12 ESV - So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.
Matthew 24:42 ESV - Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.
Luke 12:37 ESV - Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them.
Luke 11:23 ESV - Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.
Proverbs 1:7 ESV - The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.

On page 8 of It's Good to Be a Man, we wrote "In our day, the [pacifying of men] has been perfected with porn and, to a lesser extent, video games. Men who are hooked up like junkies to the dopamine drip of virtual fornication and fake dominion are worthless for the task of being fruitful in real and imposing genuine order on their worlds."
I stand by that. Video games aren't inherently sinful like porn. We have a few consoles. They are, however, inherently dangerous due to their modern video game design. Fire can be good. It can also maim and kill you.

Games are a bit more nuanced than what I'm hearing Mr. Foster say here. There are real social interactions involved with certain games. Since time is being spent on overcoming some sort of challenge, it is training of one flavor or another, at least in the mental sphere. How much real-world use this may be is up for debate (I was a flight sim junkie growing up, and yes, it did make me more adept at flying real-world aircraft).
At the same time, it can also offer a cheap counterfeit to genuine exercise of dominion. I don't fly planes (too expensive, not in that line of work) and I don't kick down doors and storm rooms. I do, however, garden and improve my own home. This seems far more fulfilling (if more expensive and frustrating) than a video-game imitation of the same.

But I want to have my interactions with stuff ultimately glorify God, and not bury the talent given to me. On the porn issue; agree. However, the video game issue is perhaps more complex than is being addressed here. In a preindustrial society, every waking hour required hard physical labor just to ensure you and your family had enough to eat. When the sun went down, men were exhausted and often went to sleep fairly early, only to continue the grind the next day. Granted, in ancient Israel, God gave the Sabbath and multiple feasts for rest and re-creation but the average man worked himself literally to death. Industrial society, created wealth on an unprecedented scale making it possible that the average man did not have to work, literally every waking moment and giving him for the first time, significant amounts of free time. Now the question is, what to do with that free time? Christians had real problems with sports, with radio, television, movies even reading fiction (Dabney thought it weakened the mind). Sure, you high IQ types who love reading and researching, can take advantage of the printing press but what about the average working man, who is not an intellectual. OK, he mows his grass, paints his house, maybe even fixes his car; but he still has copious amounts of free time so what can he lawfully do in terms of recreation. The assault against computer gaming in the Christian community reminds me way too much of the Jeremiads against the "Devil Box" I heard as a child; that to even have a TV in your home was a clear sign that you were not really serious about your Christianity. This was and is a problem that in America at least goes back to the Puritan problem of never working out a decent theology of recreation. So gentlemen, is it lawful to watch sports, be enthusiastic for whatever the sports events are during a particular season? If so, how is that different than playing Call of Duty?

As an art and/or teaching/training medium, videogames have great potential, but because this is a sinful world, greed, lust, excess are what drive most of them, and most of the players. Same goes for movies and even books, but the potential for addiction to videogames exponentially higher, and many times moreso for men who feel hopeless than hopeless women; who are more likely to be addicted to netflix + softcore 'romance', for various reasons. It's sad how few truly great videogames/interactive works there are, but not surprising to me. Hopelessness is actually most often the drive though, from what I gather.
Porn is extremely destructive apart from knockdown effects like apathy, lethargy, impotence, idleness... Really any addiction will cause these. It seems to go without saying, except porn is probably more addictive than Heroin.
I also doubt wanting to please a woman's father has historically been the main driving force for most men to be productive... it sounds romantic and believable enough, and has certainly *been* the motivator for many, but ...it's a bit of a strange claim, given how many men have even neglected marriages in history over various other passions, or among the working classes have simply fornicated just as people do now. The fact is the sex drive isn't nearly as strong in a non-porn-saturated culture as the sexual-perversion-drive is in ours, and the porn addicts I know actually are still lonely, and dream of more fulfilling material lives, but are actually kept by things other than porn addiction... Some are downright desperate, but many loud 'conservative' voices simply repeat godless 'build back better' mantra, or ask them to suicide themselves against the powers that be; which doesn't really fill them with hope for a white picket fence. Again, hopelessness is the common factor I hear in all their voices. Also hate to bring up another related topic, but MGTOW is a movement for a reason; not all of the lack of drive stems from porn... we live in a very very broken world, and were they not faithless I could never blame them for being hopeless. All to say that I don't think this video is that insightful, even if "mostly true."

Unfortunately, while they are saying many things that sound nice; their words, are in fact, misleading. both porn and video games are created to distract, one (good point). But also follow the same reason for books; escapism. Through each of them you get the pleasure you would not necessarily get otherwise. Government has nothing to do with the issue. While video games, in moderation can be beneficial as a reward for something like a good days work. But I do agree that there is no benefit to porn. The issue of masculinity is another issue altogether. Many women have obsessions/sin issues with porn and video games.

Playing COD and Skyrim like games when i do play, i can say - Practising dominion/task oriented objectives in-game is definitely entertaining, but perhaps 'non-productive' in value creation outside virtual realm. But then 'play' (as in boardgames) would be similar, but i guess depends on two things for me... does it cultivate relationships in physical proximity (so not virtually), how many hours are devoted to this all up in a week, and does it cause you to well up with bursts of anger and rage and exceed boundaries previously set.
I dont personally like reading fantasy, but I can definitely see ethical and moral formation occuring, so your choice of book is critical and hours can become problematic and isolationist. Not sure if this development occurs in game play as effectively. Dunno

@@mrs.garcia6978 Of course. Just to reiterate, I think they are "not a net positive to society," so I don't think they are all bad or there are no redeeming qualities in video games. There are a lot of great features of video games I think are superior to other media. They offer opportunities for problem solving, pattern recognition, team building, experience in failure, among many others.
However, here are three reasons why I think they are different than other media:
      1. It requires your whole body. While other forms of entertainment require part of your physical self, video games require your whole body. For example, you can listen to music while going for a jog, but a video game, for the most part, requires your whole physical body so that you are completely occupied. Just ask your son to come for dinner while he's in the middle of a multiplayer match. At least with a video he can pause and come back later. Sometimes he gets so involved in the game the rest of the world is shut out. This brings up productivity implications as well as moral implications.
      2. They're designed for endless consumption. As technology has improved, and the business model has changed, games have become an amusement that is designed for to be consumed for hours on end. Very few games encourage shorter sessions, so they take up a lot of time.
      3. Most significantly, the experience isn't analogous to real life. Even the failure you experience isn't real. When you fail in a game, there isn't anything real at stake. While that can be good for a training environment, boys often never leave that state where there's no consideration for risk-reward situations. The boys also don't have any concept of how hard things are in real life. Games are relatively easy to become proficient at. Nolan Bushnell, the founder of Atari, once said that games should be "easy to learn, difficult to master." I think that's a good concept, but I think it's made our boys less willing to learn something if it's too hard. They think they should be able to pick up some new skill in a few minutes.
TLDR: Video games are entertainment that require your whole body for hours on end in a world over-saturated in entertainment.

I have noticed that these guys put a heavy emphasis on filling an already-full earth, and subduing it by solely material definitions (I guess maybe Sibera is still sorta wild? Alaska?). But I want to say this anyway: You aren't the only one. Our hope isn't for this very short life, and neither is our ultimate purpose in marriage; and many (majority in many generations?) will never marry in their lifetime, even if they want to.
And God is not careless, but rather patient with offenders, and is not aloof to suffering or cruel, but is most serious about our need to have the truth revealed. He drives us to Himself, and ultimately healing, if we'll go. Threats to the physical parts of our being are not the biggest threats to us; sin and death are far far more deadly. I can tell you that God Himself is worth more than any creation if His- even a family.
God has not left us without purpose, nor made us without meaning. He didn't _have_ to make you, and nobody twisted His arm; He _wanted_ you to be. When I was a very smol child I saw only remains of beauty in this world, and much brokeness, hopelessness, vanity and sorrow... and time and experience have only intensified those images to me. The only reason you have a sense of the worth of a person, or of morality, or justice, is because He _is_ those things. You cannot be more moral than the God that made your mind and heart. That much has to encourage you? I love Him, and still see His expressions everywhere, and can survive the sorrow because I see His saving grace at work. This life just isn't that long, and it's about saving us _out_ of death and this sick world, spiritually-- but knowing Him causes us to love what he has done and made even now; His art. His expressions. If we love God we _will_ want to honor him with what good we _do_ receive in this life, and the good things He has made, even if humanity has distorted and destroyed much of it. It's about His glory, showing the world who He actually is, and what horror sin is. In any case I will pray for you
