Finally Christopher review this!! I was waiting for a good review on it.
Indeed the force is strong with your videos. Love your channel, very informative and detailed
Your works is lovely Christopher! I can always trust your lens assessments with confidence compared to other youtubers!
These are cine, they are meant to be used for video. Full HD is 2MP, 4K is 8MP, if you want to test it for image quality, you should downsample the image to these resolutions and then describe it's performance. Checking on 24MP is more than 6K and almost 8K resolution. I think they are perfectly sharp with some extra look for up to 6K, given the price - perfect.
Great review as always, as someone who shoots anamorphic photography it would also be interesting to see you test anamorphic lenses in that regard.
oh that is a beautiful beautiful lense. I have way too many covering the focal length, but that finish is so attractive it's going on my wishlist.
Looking forward to seeing the review of the new autofocus "sniper" series. Would love to see a comparison on that set vs the Sigma's. Competition is ALWAYS good.
I was gonna write almost exactly the same. The sniper 23mm 1.2 would be really interesting.
My personal pick to get my hands on would be the Sniper 33 & 56 as well as to POSSIBLY replace my current Viltrox 13mm f1.4 with the all-new Sigma DC DN 10mm-18mm f2.8
Interesting. I'm about to look at some Sirui lenses (another series), and I was very interested to see how these CINE lenses performed for you.
Love the softness and chromatic aberration control at 1.2. These are characteristics that are often sought in cine lenses, so, it being a weakness or strength of the lens is subjective. For $349, this is super good performance
Worth noting that you can still use these lenses on full frame cameras such as the Canon R5/R6ii so long as you have “movie cropping” on in your settings
Kinda amazing I was looking at this lens just last night.
Wish they had a 12 or 16mm since its APSC / Suoer 35. Thanks for this great review and especially foe doing CINE lens. Please keep it up. More power to you. God bless you Chris..
Would it be possible to test the optical quality of these lenses in 1080p and 4k to see where the weaknesses become apparent?
Since those are cine lenses i think it would make sense to look at it that because those two resolutions will probably be the most common use cases
Castell Coch, not been there since I was a kid... My parents still live in Cardiff.. Re: the lens, I think many of it's weaknesses will be less noticeable on video footage, compared to hi res stills.
Great review!
In my opinion not usable at T1.2 but very good image quality from T2 to T4 depending on what you're capturing!
Considering its all manual and what it offer, it is a good lens!
Why not usable?
Would love to see a comparison on Sniper set vs the Sigma set
Using in low light at fast f stop may not be an issue due to not much detail being visable in the dark , maybe ,maybe not!
Hi Christopher, love your reviews. Given the opportunity of this review, it would to pitch the idea to also measure a lens' light potential. While the T-stop lenses provide consistent brightness but the F-Stop lenses don't. An f0.95 might give less light than an f1.4 lens, so it would be nice to know how fast a lens really is in low light.
Good idea, but must require special expensive equipment or at least a good calibrated light to make a test with!
@@JaySilva88 maybe he compare of exposure on an F-stop vs the equivalent T-stop and have a factor to grade it.
I wonder if the new sniper series is pretty much these guys with AF
T is for "toneh", right? )
What is optical differemce between cine lens and photo lens. If all we get is different housing, longer manual focus throw, apeture ring. But in term of optical it is same character as photo lens. I would just buy a photo lens that can double as auto focus photo lens to be honestly.
Cine lenses usually are better corrected with distortions and especially focus breathing. Aside from that there is also the transmission rating ("T 1.2") instead of a f-stop, so not a mathematical formula of how big your "lens opening" is, but how much light actually goes through the lens.
With every glass element and every coating you might loose a bit of light so two different "f2.8" lenses will get you a differently bright picture. For filming, especially when changing lenses, it's crucial to know your exact brightnes so your footage doesn't need to be brightened or darkened in the editing stages and your camera settings can always remain the same between lenses.
@@PiTdeLyXinsightful, thanks
What is the difference between t-stop and f-stop?
You get an F-stop number by dividing the lens' focal length by the diameter of the aperture. T-stops on the other hand is a measurement of the exact amount of light that comes out of the lens. The reason you need this is because some lens, despite having the same F-stop value, can differ in their exposure slightly. T-stops are beneficial to video work because it makes matching different shots exposure wise a lot easier because a T-stop will be the same across all lenses (at least in theory)
@@scottfly5917 Thank you for the explanation! Very clear. I have a follow-up question then; why not make all lenses, even for photographers, with t-stops instead of f-stops, since the first is more accurate of the light gathering capability of the lens?
@@mikhailnikitin5629 F-stops to my knowledge should give you a better idea of depth of field, for example you can have a 2 lenses that are T2.8 but one of them is an f2.8 and the other is something like f2.2 or somethings. These would give you different depths of field.
Precise Dof is more important in photography then in video.
History also could have a bit to do with it, F stops have simply been around longer
Disclaimer , im not an expert on this topic so please take my word with a grain of salt, cheers
Great review! I always thought it’s pronounced “sue-ray”? Wonder how this compares to the samyang cine lens (granted the samyang is autofocus)
Here in the Netherlands I've mostly heard: Si (as in 'yes' in Spanish) - Ru - I. Si-Ru-I
Yeah people say it like that, not sure who started that lol. Watching videos of Sirui reps talking about their lenses and products, it’s definitely pronounced “See-roo-ee”
Chinese company... So, it should be pronounced as 'see-rooey'. ooey from gooey but instead of using g just use r.
@@trym2121 gooey, that's the word I was looking for. I couldn't think of a word with that sound 😅
I don't know for certain, but if i were to read the name as though its chinese pinyin, it'd be pronounced 'suh-rway" to an english speaker. But honestly it's fine if u dont get it completely right everyone butchers all chinese company names hahaha. Like that gimbal company ZhiYun, their own representatives of the american branch say the name COMPLETELY incorrectly in their own marketing videos hahah
to produce product commercials for my clients it is perfect, I will buy it
I'm in the market for a lens to take with me while I backpack that's designated ONLY for astrophotography. It's needs to be light and bright. Would you recommend this one for that reason? Is there a better option around this price point? All in all, this one checks a lot of the boxes, IMO
have you had the chance to try it? If so, does it work for astrophoto?
@quiky9065 no. Still haven't gotten my hands on it, sorry
@@chefegzyle I bought a copy and i think the lens is usable for astrophotography, but it has some problems wide open so you may want to stop down
@@quiky9065 Unfortunate, Because the whole point of getting one with such a large aperture was to use it that way. To stop down is counterintuitive from what I want. Thank you!
@@chefegzyle Large aperture lenses suffers from several problems that require correction in post processing. That is why astro tracking help, by increasing exposure and stopping down. On this price range the sirui doesnt have much competition, if any.
Changing from f8 to f11 would indeed be hard to do on a lens that uses T-stops ;)
It's weird. I was super excited. The photo's in between the chart shots look very nice. But the chart shots are a complete mess 😅 The distortion is very strong. The abortion is shockingly bad. The sharpness is questionable... and then I see that shot at 6:18 of the lamps or the bike after that and I'm like "yeah... that does look pretty good..." 😅
You get what you pay for…it’s always been like this, one thing is marketing one other is real life: real life says these lenses are crap.
Even if it's not perfect, but considering the very low price it looks like very good value for money if you don't need AF.
Even with the APS-C coverage, there's no way that 24mm is f/1.2. Right? The front element is way too small.
Why not? Just look at 7artisan 0.95 lenses for example. You just get plenty of 'defect'/characteristics by having small front lenses.
You should see their preview of sniper series f1.2. Same stuff like this one
for video at 4k this lens already amazing unless you make 6k at T2.8 or 8k at T4
I'll get the Viltrox 27mm f1.2 instead....
Looks like RF 28mm f/2.8 STM pancake lens is a much better deal...
I got so excited until I saw it's APS-C only :(
Same 😢
Because apsc is the standard for filmmaking?
anthony gugliotta has a short about how he got it to work on his r6. idk if this is an option for you but he used a cropped mode
You can still use these on a full frame mirrorless camera like the R5. You just gotta turn “movie cropping” on in your settings :)
?
The loud stops won't bother cinematographers since they don't use on-board mic anyway
Not reviewed Nikon 85mm f1.2 ??????????????????????????
Not yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Another interesting lens not available for Nikon Z.
LMAO
@@user-yk1ie5ep1i Don't know what Nikon is doing to discourage third party lens manufacturers.
Will be soon probably, lots of sirui lenses are available on Nikon Z
It looks like Sirui is making autofocus versions of these known as Snipers, and not that expensive either.
What a time to get bright autofocuses lenses that are south of £500
Only if someone recreate Kubrick's f/0.7 lens
Crop 1.2 is a FF 1.8 Aperture, how it can be a Night walker?
Who told you that? Not true. f1.2 is the same brightness, regardless of sensor size. Just a cropped image, that's it. Do a test yourself. Choose a Canon FF lens for example, put it on a FF and on a APSC while opening it up in both cases and tell me if the exposure is identical? Of course the other settings have to match too.
@@matango1979 You are wrong, I mean equivalent in quality
If you want the same IQ in low light it will differ in aps-c and FF sensor, Iso 6400 for example in FF will be better than crop, so to take the same IQ you must get brighter lens in aps-c
Still looking for an unbiased review of these. I'm not interested in seeing a review from someone who was went them, are affiliated with Sirui, or sponsored. I'm so dissapointed by the community right now. Not one person is telling the truth.
Thank you for saving our 1000$...
Who shoots cinema lenses with APSC body...
Lots of people. Some RED's, most Alexas are apsc sized sensors. That aside, many full frame bodies can work very well in apsc mode.
APSC is the standard for cinema
All those amazing blockbusters you see? Majority is shot on Super35 sensors, aka aps-c.
Large format sensors aren’t so common in cinema. And only recently gotten traction.
so who’s shooting on aps-c? Everyone 😂
Actually just a few years ago it was hard to find full frame cinema cameras, with a few notable exceptions.
No too bad, may be phone can the same, rubbish!
I know that you have a review standart but shouldn’t you review a cine lens in a more video focused way I don’t know 🤷🏻♂️
Which aspects of how the lens works for video making would you like me to include? I think I covered everything in this video, including extra video footage that I wouldn't normally have for a more stills oriented lens.
Trash lens but great review.
Yeah... if the same lens had some famous branding and ten times the price, suddenly it would be a masterpiece and its defects would be charming quirks that make it special.
For the price, it's pretty good
The lens is actually really good
