It tends to be rather hazardous for a TV shows ratings, to kill off its star character. So why not a lousy fix of a plot hole, "Just rotate your turbo-booster."? "Sorry, Michael, I can't fix an engineering shortcoming, just because you need me at the moment to come up with a better solution." Why let reality rain upon the parade of TV make-believe?

Computer A.I. within so many examples of sci-fi, often gets it not-quite-right. Strangely disturbingly like flawed human reasoning. But perhaps that is due to the human writers. I kind of suspect that computers are supposed to be so fast, that KITT should have run 1000s of scenarios right then, "This is not looking good. Let's apply the brakes early, so as to be cautious."

The idea of KITT trying to "play along" with Michael's scheme, is a high level of abstraction for a machine to comprehend. KITT seemed a bit too much "patting himself on the back" for figuring it out, to realize what was actually going on at the moment. Michael seemed to know that KITT would protect him from an "arranged accident" far better than the bad guys roughing him up or shooting him would.

"Turbo boost" sounds much like techno-babble of the sort that they use in _Star Trek_ to make it seem like they are talking about something very futuristic and high-tech, when it is just silly made-up words. Technically, wouldn't turbo-boost merely boost power, acceleration, or spin out the wheels? Why would it launch the car into the air? Now if KITT had some "nitro" or some nitrous oxide, that appears to actually be a thing. Of course that doesn't launch into the air either. But who even needs that other than speed demons or fancy FLAG crime-fighters?
KITT may not be a doctor, but KITT has that neat oxygen outlet into the cabin. Probably from some some oxygen bottle stashed who knows where? But why wouldn't it just put oxygen into the air conditioner vents? Well that wouldn't be obvious to the audience as to what KITT was doing then. Oh wait, not a lot of cars even had air conditioning back then. They merely had heaters.

    • @bttfsof

This being said, the turbo boost was always used consistantly has a "booster", it always pushed the car and not through boosting its engine.

If you wanted just Michael Knight do-gooder, crime-fighter, without all the high-tech gadgets, then there was _MacGyver._ I loved watching both TV shows actually. And I like the high-tech, and now the Tesla cars strangely seem a a little bit like KITT. The parallels are striking. Perhaps old TV shows such as _Knight Rider_ helped inspire the high-tech that we are starting to see now.
Now the ejection seats that could launch Michael Knight 25 feet up into the air, by just softly moving up a few inches, that is obviously make-believe, but a car that drives itself, will soon be a standard feature on most all new cars. Much like on _Knight Rider_ we will be able to summon our car to come pick us up by talking into our (smart)watch (or smart-phone) or by tapping something on the screen using our car's smart-watch app.
Didn't super-pursuit mode have special fins that pushed out of the side of the car? As at around 150 or 200 mph or so, the contact of the tires on the road, become more of a "suggestion" rather than control. At those speeds, the car needs to function more like an airplane to keep from losing control. Perhaps some little fins could help provide cornering forces to keep the car from just flying off the road. But then the fins were probably shaped wrong and too small to really be nothing that a cute gadget. I think they would have to be designed better if they were for real.
Super-pursuit mode was a lot more cool than those ugly stupid obnoxious fake-wing spoilers that people put onto their cars, as if they think they are special or they pretend like they are race-car drivers. It looks about as stupid as putting a sharp-looking suit-coat onto a pig.

But repairing itself, was not on the list of KITT's features. KITT is not the Avalon spaceship in _Passengers_ that supposedly has some software-based ability to repair itself.
No, what we see is a camera shot goof, in which the camera did not lie, and showed that it was just a black dent-able Trans Am, and not really this wonder-car called KITT. KITT is nothing but clever TV make-believe.
When Michael tried to warn that evil woman not to shoot at him, because the windows are bullet-proof, well I don't think that the windows are really bullet-proof. Good thing that they do not use real bullets in recording TV make-believe. Somehow I don't think that the bullet would richochet like it supposedly did in that episode and so she got what she deserved.
And just because KITT may have had a nice wax/finish job, doesn't make him indestructible.

What evidence is there to suggest that KITT can repair himself? None. Not even in the story. Machines do not normally repair themselves. KITT came in all the time to the mobile lab in that Knight truck trailer, to repaired or retrofitted or upgraded. KITT is not a biological organism and does not heal itself. There was no damage nor any dent. That was a special effects or recording snafu. Evidence showing that KITT is really make-believe, that it was really just an ordinary car. Try as they might to prop up the illusion, KITT is still make-believe.
BTW, that truck trailer very likely was bigger on the inside than on the outside, otherwise it would be nearly impossible to walk around KITT while KITT was inside the trailer. The inside is but a set on a movie stage with extra space for the actors and cameras.

The scene is made for low hanging fruit ‘I need excitement’ types like Jesse 😋 For me if not you also, it’s hard to appreciate the scene cos it makes no sense lol... This is why Michael Knight found himself in many avoidable predicaments over the course of the series, but K.I.T.T.'s abilities always won out in the end, so always ended up saving his hide in one way or the other.

Couldn't KITT have traveled a different path back up, that wasn't quite as steep? We can not just give the super-car all of the super-abilities, otherwise we shall have to invent bigger super-villains, well unless you think that TV stories and video games should all be collecting shiny coins and decorated with dancing flowers and butterflies, as in _Super Mario Brothers_ or one of the many _Rayman_ adventures? But those are but a fraction of the many video games that I have played. Others have been perhaps more challenging or perhaps more dark.
We aren't supposed to too much see all the stunt cars and special effects, even though we may take note, we conveniently delete those from the story that they are trying to tell. Much like if your child is in the school play, you don't talk too much about how fake the cardboard props and background paintings appeared, but rather encourage them in how good that their acting was. First I try to enjoy the story, but of course I like to watch the Bonus Features on the DVD, and watch whatever they may have in how they made it look so real, and what special effects they may have used. I also like to know how things work.
I was concerned that my little nephews were too much believing what they see on TV, and not very well understanding like how we adults tell them, that most everything on TV is fake. They seemed scared that some actor might have gotten hurt. So when I saw a certain "Behind the Scenes" video clip on a _Star Trek_ movie, I thought, "They need to see this". I think it helped them understand. It was a video clip of how the saucer section of the Enterprise, was being towed by a pickup truck moving it through its "crash" site. Viewed from that vantage point of a much-smaller scale model, it looked so incredibly fake. And yet that was a movie that I much enjoyed watching, and it looked fairly real at the time.
The stunt cars could very much be overkill, but perhaps they want to save the more legit-looking cars for more of the beauty shots for the camera. Does anybody even know how many General Lees and how many Trans Ams were used in the making of _The Dukes of Hazzard_ and _Knight Rider_ ? Was it around 20? A car destroyed per episode? Hard to imagine how they get a budget so big that they can afford to destroy dozens of cars in the making of those TV shows, but they had audiences of many millions of people and a whole lot of advertising money backing them up. Do you get to keep your job, if you only spend but a third of the budget? Or will the network complain that it looks too fake and that it will cost them ratings?
Somebody once said something to me about Attention Deficit Disorder, and how on TV they cut to another camera scene just about every 2 seconds. I once counted it, and sure enough, they appear to do that. Why? So as to more effectively brainwash us? Interrupt the scene and our thought process before we can reject a false idea as false? Or is it because they have too many cameramen, and they need to justify their jobs somehow? Or maybe a little of both?

    • @Longlostpuss
      @Longlostpuss 5 лет назад

@@yosefmacgruber1920 OK this is a dissertation mate, not sure it needed to be as long as this, but anyways:-
My main problem with this scene (and this is when I saw it as a 5 Year old kid), was that firstly the car is coasting because it's in neutral and the engine is switched off, that's the only reason why it's travelling down at such speed and the braking is not effective. Anyone who drives or knows anything about cars knows this was unnecessary.
So basically, if K.I.T.T. just turned his engine on the car would have slowed down significantly off the back of that alone.
The other problem I had was that if the decline was too steep to stop the car by conventional means because of gravity, it made no sense that K.I.T.T. was able to reverse all the way back up.
This is suspension of disbelief done wrong, but I was such a huge fan of the show that I just allowed it to go over my head. I just loved seeing K.I.T.T. do his thing while listening to the awesome soundtrack of that ridiculous fighter jet/spaceship sounding engine he had.
As for the stunt cars I think they had multiple. Some of the earlier ones were full cars, others were body worked with a flimsy vendor, you can just see what is what if you pay attention.
I wasn't a fan of Season 2 and the use of the toy models and sets for some of the scenes, I have to say.

      @yosefmacgruber1920 5 лет назад

      @@Longlostpuss
Wake up to reality. Much of TV is fake, even some of the news is fake.
Such a bigger flaw of _Knight Rider_ was that the camera view of Michael pushing the Turbo-boost button, was just a cover of the Trans Am driving up a ramp so that it could just turbo-boost jump over things like some sort of super-car. Like who didn't know that? If the car had that kind of jumping ability, why didn't it just fly to the rooftop of a building? Well it is just a "car of the future", and not Superman, and not some too-much-motion-in-your-face Transformers superhero.
Curiously, _Star Trek_ shuttlecraft can fly, can take off vertically, but they don't do much of anything interesting, no stunts, because they are just mere transport vehicles and we don't want them stealing the limelight fame from the superhero starship Enterprise.
And ironically, the actual cars of the future, electric cars, will not make all those "power" sounds and will be strangely quiet. Quite a lot of the foley sounds of TV and movies are fake. "What shall we make KITT sound like? I know, let's have him sound like horse hoof-steps." "No, we can't do that. That is way too retro, and he is a car, not a horse. And KITT has more power than your typical car, so we need a more powerful sound."
I liked all the seasons, but was it season 4 when they had to rebuild KITT after he got destroyed, and they made KITT even fancier than before. He even had super-speed fins or something that pushed out in Pursuit mode. Didn't they give him some sort of convertible top? Well convertibles were never cool to me. At least it wasn't some stupid cloth tent "rag-top".
I actually thought KITT was rather cute in that episode in which that young guy hacker stole KITT and removed the computer component from the car. And so KITT is riding around in the passenger seat of an ordinary car, his body removed, his special powers removed, and he is but a mere smart and talking computer that can't hardly do much else.
So how even was KITT powered? Must be by some free-energy technology that the evil elitists who ruin this world don't want for us to know about. For back then, laptop batteries were not all that good, and KITT wasn't very big and wherever was his battery pack?
But of course, KITT later was reunited with his body.
I have to much appreciate the toy models and scale models and other cheesy fakery techniques of the 1980s TV, because now we have computer graphics and special effects galore, but the stories have went to crap. I would rather have the good story and have to use my imagination a little. Great special effects should be no excuse to neglect the story.
BTW, I have noticed that most all of my favorite video games, had a great story. So if I could create my own video game, perhaps I would try to start with writing the great story underlying it. Maybe I could start it as a book, and then start layering some great game levels onto it?

    1. Why did the guy shoot the door, and not the window. I don't know why he even thought you could shoot open a car door like that.
    2. Why didn't Kitt keep the speed reduced, and just stop when out of view of the bad guys. Hell, he didn't even have to go down the hill, he could have turned right as soon as they pushed him, and drove away. It's not like they could have stopped him.

BTW, _Knight Rider_ was primarily made for the TV airing, and not for DVD and internet which came along later. Seeing an episode just once, one would have to pay very close attention to find very many flaws.
The auto parts store was probably farther away than that, and that sort of project can easily take a half hour or more.
Well of course they don't do well. Weren't cars rear-wheel drive back then? Heavy engine in front, drive wheels in the rear. No wonder wheels were all the time spinning out. They had to turn the engine sideways and somehow squeeze in a transaxle, to make front-wheel drive possible. And were they even using CV joints back then? I heard in _The Dukes of Hazard_ they managed to destroy around a car per episode. I guess that car wasn't so indestructible either. People would say that the car would land, bend up, and in the next camera shot it was straight again. They must have had a bunch of General Lees.

How was it that KITT was hitting the brakes in Normal Mode not Auto Mode?
