Hey Rick, I appreciate the review. This is my gamer. I was going back and forth with the D2 and M4. Yes I purchased them both and have played roughly 10 rounds with each for comparison. M4 has the stock Atmos R shaft and D2 has Diamanna Red 50g R shaft. The M4 is 9degrees adjusted to 10 and D2 is in the A1 setting @ 10.5. The M4 is longer by 15 yards with my swing speed of 86 mph. Carry & roll to a massive 245 yard average. D2 Carry & Roll avg 230 yards. However the slightly shorter shaft and feel off the head of the Titleist was the deciding factor for me. Nothing feels better and repeatable 3-5 yard fade I can count on every swing makes it the driver of choice. Thanks for your review and validation of my findings on the course.
I know this was a year ago but great info!! Very useful. I'm with you I'd take 15 yards shorter for 15 yards more accurate every day. I've been hitting the same driver for 10yrs and I can't bring myself to spend $400 on a new one, but a slightly used $150 is more my comfort zone.
Sorry Rick, one 12g weight does the draw and fade. It depends which end you put in first. The weight is biased toward one side. Hit these yesterday and fell in love with the D3. The 3W is amazing! Never hit a fairway that far in my life, and the new Fujikara shaft is prime.
There are more than 3 available. Mark Crossfield shows multiple variations on the weight at each bias (12g and 8g). He preferred the 8g, but is a slower swinger with a shorter average distance.
By the way Rick, you mentioned that you can get a fade and draw weight is it appears that you thought that they are different weights. Actually they're not, it's the same weight and you just flip it around a bit like the Callaway CG weight, where you just flip it around as I said. When a customer orders the 917 and they, for example, choose the 12g option, then you get 2 weights, the neutral 12g weight and the 12g Draw/fade weight (to flip around). Hope that sounds pretty clear?
Hey Rick - great to see you back into the reviews - really love them. What do you make of the launch angle of the 917D2? Would love to see some numbers with an extra degree of loft - may be really close to the D3 results? Cheers, Pete
I watched a club testing video this morning on a US website and it didn't fare as well as the 915 in any aspect! my opinion is club manufacturers have got so close to the end of what they can achieve that most of the new releases are no better than those released within the last couple of years and that they release new models just for cash injection. ?.?.?
I have been playing a 910D2 since i bought it brand new. Has a Diamana S flex 60g shaft. I have been trying out new drivers (Speedzone,Maverick, Epic Flas,SIM, Rouge, Ping410 etc. ) Its crazy Im hitting my 910D2 the same distance as all the newer drivers lol I do have to say the forgiveness is better for most of the new drivers. Going to save up and get a Titleist T3 or Taylormade SIM :-)
Your comment that your carry distance is a bit less than the M1, but the shaft is a half inch shorter on the 917. You get the 917 fitted and dialed in your dispersion is going to be better than what we just saw. 290 in the fairway is better than 300 in the rough!
I also find this driver to be very "draw" biased....It seems most of the manufacturers make their drivers this way due to most people fighting a slice....I had a 910 D2 which I hit with a slight draw in the B1 setting, 1* open, the same setting with the 917 produces hooks..I even put the "fade" weight in, but it still hooks the ball.,,,,I'd say it's the indian not the arrow, but I don't hook my 913 3 wood off the tee.....I saw your review on the GBB Epic Sub-zero.....it seems to have a fade bias...going to give it a try, and hopefully get back to mid 70's like I normally score....can't play a 40 yard hook. I did well with the RBZ Tour driver years ago, it had a fade bias, so hopefully the Callaway will do the same.
Have always liked the look of the D3 better but in the real world the D2 works much better for me. Still in a 913 w/ an AD Di7 @ 44" and love it. Looking forward to hitting it side by side by side with the 915 and 917 this weekend.
Question for you Rick. Have you lost a bit of swing speed with the swing changes? Much better ballflights however! Ballspeed looks to be a bit down, could be down to smashfactor but spin was pretty good for it being D2.
Rick, when are you going to do a follow up trying different CG settings.. ie fade, draw, lighter & heavier. You can change swing weight let's see what effect that has on launch, spin and club head speed.Cheers Paul.
RS there are more than 3 weights available so you can change the swingweight which is probably the more interesting and innovative part of the new 917 range, so there are different weights 12grms, 8grms etc. of the neutral, draw and fade bias tubes.
Rick Shiels Golf Hey, RS great to see the new daughter arrive safely congrats to you and the Missus and 'older' sister :) Am enjoying the lesson journey with Dan. Haven't watched the D3 video yet ... opps!
Titleist is selling a proper fitting with this new driver. Maybe an updated review once you are properly fit? As always, good video! Keep up the good work!
Hey rick. I have the 917 d2 love it! Have you tried without the weight? What would the characteristics be? I’m thinking about trying it at my next round.
Titleist provide a range of weight for both drivers. from 8 to 16 in neutral then I think its the same in draw and fade. If you choose a 14 gram fade weight they will also provide you with the same in neutral. Loads of info on the website.
Rick's starting to trust himself a little more with these camera angles. Thought I was gonna have to put my 3D glasses on to see the ball when I first saw where the camera was positioned.
I'd be keen to see a comparison of the 915 and 917 and how they match up in both d2 and d3 models im looking to upgrade my 910 d3 but really swaying to the m series but this may change my mind and wouldn't mind the 915 as itll be reduced now but if there's noticeable difference between the two it would be worth noting.
+andy o the m2 is a serious contender for when I switch just need to get one at the right price if I like it need to hit it to be fair what's so good about it in your opinion ??
Great looks, sounds fabulous, ball speed is amazing, launch characteristics are brilliant, I've had ping g ls tec and 915 d3 and big bertha alpha 815 over the last few years and a couple of taylormade one as well within the last 6 years ( fussy git, I know) but the m2 is better in every aspect than all of them and yes I did some really intensive testing. Obviously that's my personal opinion and you would need to do the same, particularly with shaft choice. Good luck with it!
Not quite. there are 10 weights. 8g, 10g, 12g, 14g, 16g all neutrals. Then 8g, 10g, 12g, 14g and 16g all Fade/Draw weights. Sorry to sound obtuse maybe, but just wanted to let you know. Anyone that needs a 12g weight for example for his own particular ideal Swingweight will receive a 12g Neutal and 12g Fade Draw weight. Same for 8g, 10g 14g 16g. So the idea is for the fitter to get the right Swingweight as per the customers' needs, then those particular weights in both neutral and Fade/Draw will be supplied with the Driver.
Hey Rick, love the videos... I have the same problem as you hooking them a bit. I tried to close the hips a bit... it works, but i was wondering if it was the right move. Love the vids mate... Keep it up. Thanks
You not getting massive carry distance from this is there much of a reason behind it? it is going straight though... really want this club already..........
I like the look, but doesn't seem to keep up with the m1/m2 for distance. The m2 is the longest driver I have ever hit by far! Would take a lot to give that up. Especially for $500.
Trust me the only real differences in terms of distance will only be due to the shaft length. Providing both Drivers are fit optimally of course. FWIW, as an example, I have an M2 that's not optimally fit, don't get me wrong, it's not far out, but certainly not optimal launch conditions. The 917 D2 that was optimally fit for me is 18 yards more carry, and 16 yards more total distance than my M2. It's horses for courses but nothing more than that, and these sweeping statements that 1 Driver is so much better than another is simply not factually correct and is nothing more than a generalization that is not relevant for everyone. I'm sure that I could get my M2 to be longer and right up there with the Titleist but only if I was optimally fit. I've ordered the Titleist purely on the basis of it being better than my M2 (for me).
yes, I'd be keen to see a comparison of the 915 and 917 and how they match up in both d2 and d3 models im looking to upgrade my 910 d3 but really swaying to the m series but this may change my mind and wouldn't mind the 915 as itll be reduced now but if there's noticeable difference between the two it would be worth noting.
Results will vary from one person to another. All I can do is comment from a purely personal perspective. I was fit at Celtic Manor at the National Fitting Centre for the 915, 21 months ago. Results were good, but the feel was quite harsh off the face. Tried the 917 today at my Pros' place. The results were so much better for me with the 917. 3-4 mph more ball speed. 2 degrees higher launch angle but with 300 rpm less spin. For some reason my Swing speeds were slightly higher with the 917 too, but that's of less importance. All that matters is ball speeds and those launch parameters, as does dispersion of course! The 917 had 12 yards more carry than the 915 and 19 yards more total distance! And the feel off the face is night and day too, lovely feel off the face with the 917, huge improvement to my 'feel' senses. Fitted into the 917 D2 10.5* with Fujikura Speeder Pro Tour Spec 74 X. Lovely feeling shaft! Go try. I was mightily impressed. The 917 fairways are fantastic too by the way.
Yes. I think you're quite right, it is quite a lot of wonga. Same as TM M1 and Callaway 816 DBD though. That doesn't make it right of course, because as you say, the price may hold a few people back that would otherwise like to change into this. I have been ultra critical of Titleist in the past, but this is a great offering, I can't deny it. Just that price! Ouch!!!
917 seems to be shorter than M1, SZ and others, but it's *far* straighter. Rick often hits big sweeping draws in driver tests, this bunch of five shots had much straighter ball flight. 917 might not be the longest, but seems like it'll find most fairways.
Absolutely, driver has nothing to do with this. He's making huuuuuuuge changes in his swing. Getting it more on plane and not too much on the inside, where his overdrawing came from. Also he's getting a shorter backswing to have everything more under control. Can't see how a driver can do that with just technology.
I cant hit this driver for shit... 110-113mph swing speed, factory shaft (diamana 60 S) factory CG weight. 9.5 loft. I tried shaft position in C2 And D2. I naturally hit down on the ball (unfortunately) and average 3900-4100 rpm backspin. All my shots are either blocks left or weather balloons that start straight and go to the stratosphere right. Any suggestions?
hmm. ur average launch is a little low and ur spin could go down 300 rpm. 12.5 would be better. I think the d3 would be a better fit for you my good sir. that fade setting would open that face a bit
Good review and driver looks as boring as usual with Titleist :D Seems another new driver cant compete with the M1/M2 still, is anything going to beat them I wonder??
If only you could hit balls so consistently out at an actual course and round of golf. Goes for all us actually. All these stats coming from hitting 100 balls non stop can be deceiving sometime.
Titleist makes great drivers, but the customization options are over the top. This makes the M1 look like a child's toy. I don't even know i get fit for the right size would make you happy once you hit 2 or 3 bad shots in a row.

With the fade option, this could be a great fairway-finder for you Rick. Watching how the D3 goes for you next.
You can flip the weight around so if it's 14 g draw weight you can flip it round and put it in other way and it becomes 14g fade
I had been talking with Tad Moore, (custom putter and hickory shafts maker) and he was saying how long and forgiving these were, seems he was right
I thought those balls where going to hit me 😂 god they are close to the camera Rick

Rick Shiels Golf Hey, RS great to see the new daughter arrive safely congrats to you and the Missus and 'older' sister :)
Am enjoying the lesson journey with Dan.
Haven't watched the D3 video yet ... opps!
Rick, could you do a long drive competition with the Titleist 917 D2 vs the Taylormade M2?? That would be a good contest!
Hi Rick, what simulator set up are you using for these videos? Appreciate the videos!
Titleist is selling a proper fitting with this new driver. Maybe an updated review once you are properly fit? As always, good video! Keep up the good work!

Rick's starting to trust himself a little more with these camera angles. Thought I was gonna have to put my 3D glasses on to see the ball when I first saw where the camera was positioned.
I'm looking to buy a used one of these. Thank you for making this video. It's so helpful.
That second one was close to the camera my goodness

I know we're all different but having had a d3 and now an m2, the m2 is better by a considerable amount in my opinion.

gratz on the swing looking and doing alot better.
Really enjoying your content at the moment Rick keep it up Mann quality

What a lovely club. Titleist has done it again.
Would really like to see Rick use an average guy swing 100mph with the comparison of Taylormade Sim and RBZ
Not bad for right out of the box. Why dobn't you fiddle with the shaft a bit and do another video?
Cheers,
Rich
NEW TITLEIST 917 D3 DRIVER REVIEW
ruclips.net/video/OOhF1AZ1uCU/видео.html
I'd love to see you put the 8g weight in fade setting and give it a rip Rick.
Great Job Mr Shiels. Big fan. All the way from Texas
You not getting massive carry distance from this is there much of a reason behind it? it is going straight though... really want this club already..........
Swing changes looking Rick keep it up
If you get the 8 gram weight for that driver you will add 10 yards. Less weight means less spin. It would be right there with the m drivers.
I like the look, but doesn't seem to keep up with the m1/m2 for distance. The m2 is the longest driver I have ever hit by far! Would take a lot to give that up. Especially for $500.

Rick, we would like to see the camera a tiny bit closer to the ball flights please?
Hi Rick, is this 917 driver a huge advancement comparing to last years model?
love the content, keep going!!
yes, I'd be keen to see a comparison of the 915 and 917 and how they match up in both d2 and d3 models im looking to upgrade my 910 d3 but really swaying to the m series but this may change my mind and wouldn't mind the 915 as itll be reduced now but if there's noticeable difference between the two it would be worth noting.

JAG sixtyfive It is alot of bananas for a golf club though isnt it?
Yes. I think you're quite right, it is quite a lot of wonga. Same as TM M1 and Callaway 816 DBD though. Few yards short of what you want but that dispersion is where it's at for the course.
Best driver out there
Are you at the Prairie sports village in burnley Rick
Crossfield has got the weight pack!!
Rick where are the fades at???
The flipping of the weight is probably less effective due to the asymmetric shape of the head.
The reason why his drives are short is because the driver is only 45inches most of the other driver are 45.5 or 46inches
any chance of Dobby testing it ?
917 seems to be shorter than M1, SZ and others, but it's *far* straighter. Rick often hits big sweeping draws in driver tests, this bunch of five shots had much straighter ball flight. 917 might not be the longest, but seems like it'll find most fairways.
Never seen him hit a driver more straight than shot 4. still tough to see if thats worth sacrificing 25 yards with the M series for him
That's his swing change not the driver making it go straight
Absolutely, driver has nothing to do with this. He's making huuuuuuuge changes in his swing. Getting it more on plane and not too much on the inside, where his overdrawing came from.
Also he's getting a shorter backswing to have everything more under control. Can't see how a driver can do that with just technology.
I can promise you it is not shorter than a M1/2, maybe less forgiving, but not even sure about that. The D3 is fantastic.
Have you tried the club? Based on what empirical data are you making your assumptive "promise?"
It is one weight for both directions
I like the titlelst 917 d3
I cant hit this driver for shit... 110-113mph swing speed, factory shaft (diamana 60 S) factory CG weight. 9.5 loft. I tried shaft position in C2 And D2. I naturally hit down on the ball (unfortunately) and average 3900-4100 rpm backspin. All my shots are either blocks left or weather balloons that start straight and go to the stratosphere right. Any suggestions?
Slow it down
hmm. ur average launch is a little low and ur spin could go down 300 rpm.
"crystal brilliant"??
its got a shaft? thought you didn't need one!
First comment Rick! I'm a huge fan!
I'm a huge fan also
Titleist makes great drivers, but the customization options are over the top. This makes the M1 look like a child's toy. I don't even know i get fit for the right size would make you happy once you hit 2 or 3 bad shots in a row.
Disappointing shaftless data. xD
He mentions which shaft he uses X stiff.. You can google the specifics of the shaft.
+Michael Ackerman nah man just a joke from Finchy's vid. Heads came without a shaft.
+Alvaro Ybañez don't worry man the joke wasn't wasted I got it 😂
This driver is no longer than my 915 it is actually shorter kind of disappointed titleist even brought this out you gotta be crazy to upgrade to this if you have a 915 or a solid driver already
Tell that to Justin Thomas!!
I understand that Titleist makes a quality product, but I absolutely refuse to pay $550 for a driver. I can guarantee it will not give me that much of an increase, if any, in performance over a Ping G, Callaway XR16, or any of the other drivers that are $150 cheaper.
Agreed. A single setting version of this technology is in place with Ping G SF TEC. Slice cure!
looks like most titleist drivers (and thats not a bad thing they make good stuff) but nothing that "excites" me about this 1
taylor made m1 vs titleist 917~~~~
Rick, not all my shots are crystal brilliant, either. :-)
Launch was low.
m2 still the goat
aint no way this is rick lmao
Shame the weight kit is $180!!!!!! Insane, higher than Apple's stupid earpods!
His mirror is shaking....
There is no context to this review.
dkkd
What a load of BS we are being duped.
Nothing new, just expensive, fiddly and no distance gain or any gains on any driver in the last 5 years!!!im not wasting my money anymore when I hit a g15 as well as a m2,watch reviews on here over 5 years and see the stats for yourselves.😀
