Or if they had a device just showing the fingers clinching he'd be at the top scale. \www.topendsports.com/testing/tests/handgrip.htm
@@makersmike2959 yeah yours is more correct that the original comment. We have a dynamometer at my work where we test grip strength and I've gotten around 100 lbs of force and I'm kinda average strength. I think they should be measuring his pinch grip not his grasp. I would think that would be more important for rock climbing.
Makers Mike I was thinking the same shit. Avg 33 year old is probably sedentary and not an elite athlete. And honnold is a marathon climber. I’m sure his grip strength is great for his build and for his climbing. I wanna see what a powerlifters grip strength would register on that
Rock climbers have incredible endurance, so I'm not taking anything away from them, but if you see this guy without his shirt on he realized that he doesn't have a ton of muscle. His frame is incredibly light so that he doesn't need to have a bunch of muscle to lift himself, he mostly uses his tendons to hold him up. The average grip strength is based off of an average size male as well. Alex is only 155 lbs at 5' 11"
@@makersmike2959 Exactly. This device isn't suited to testing Alex's capabilities, or many rock climbers for that. As it tests grip strength. rather then finger strength.
@@diabl2master known for free soloing imagine shaking from a grip tester when you regularly put your life on the line and your grip is the only thing stopping you from splatting

Common misconception that climbers have an abnormal tight handshake: You are training your fingers and hands to hold on a wall and not to break a broomstick by just squishing it. Just different motions.
@@pants1359 Abnormally tight is the keypoint. Of course you will have a firm handshake, but every Bodybuilder will squish you to bits because he actually trains to fully close his hand around a bar.
zgsoad Climbers will destroy bodybuilders in grip strength. Don’t be dumb. How many bodybuilders do you think specifically train their grip? Pretty obvious you’ve never climbed pal.
Precisely - if you want to get great burst strength, then research the Captains of Crush grippers - these go up to 365 lbs, or around 200 RGC. Much higher than what we see in this video, which if accurate, is less than half. Its just different types of strength.

I got very excited to see the rockclimbing in the us but didn't get into doing it since i'm not that experienced yet. So awesome to read about your history and then being somewhere that you'd actually climb. To be honest I dont really like the free solo stuff but kudo's for having the nerve (and chill) for doing it and listening to your body!
It doesn’t matter if his grip strength is 95 lbs or. 395 lbs - the man completed a free solo climb of El Capitan. No other measurements are necessary. You cannot beat that accomplishment. He wins.
This guy is a legend in so many aspecs. But most of all, his energy is soo unusual. It's like he's alive but yet he's not. He dances in this place btwn life and death and he's just effortlessly gliding through life with almost no emotion and this strange humility.
I've heard a climber say that it's not unusual for climbers to be stronger in their non-dominant hand. I can't remember why exactly, something about how you tend to support your own weight more with your non-dominant hand. Maybe somebody can fill in the details.
I cannot. But I experienced the same. Maybe its due to me trying to be easy on my left and spare power. I just notice that although I´m right handed have reserves in my left when I´m almost at the top running on fumes.
I’d wager that people have more experience doing dextrous things with their dominant hand, so any sort of gripping or grabbing will feel stronger and more natural using the dominant hand. Whereas with the non-dominant hand, you compensate for that inherent feeling with strength or grip. Basically, you can use less strength with your dominant hand because you’re much more comfortable manipulating it than your opposite hand. Just a guess tho
I haven't heard that although, as a climber myself, I can perhaps reason through it. Most of the time when you're climbing you're climbing in a style called lead. This means that every so often you must stop climbing and place a peice of gear into the rock to clip your rope to. Most people have more dexterity in their dominant hand, and would use it to place the gear, while the climber is hangimg on with just their non dominant hand. Maybe this has something to do with it?
As a climber, you would feel your dominant hand is stronger and should be the hand you reach for holds with and grab, while your non dominant hand would be locking off a grip or hold which may lead to an imbalance. I too, feel a bit more comfortable locking off with my left hand (non-dominant) and reach with my right hand. By locking off holds with your left, you may develop a stronger grip or arm strength. It varies between people, but Alex may have had something off like his tux was too tight or something with his fingers or muscle as he felt something was off when he was at the rock climbing gym right before the Oscars.
I remember at the Oscars and “Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi” one of the directors got up and thanked Soni and everyone else but Alex Honnold who climbed the freakin wall. That’s pretty low.

I'm surprised he didn't register higher, but I'm guessing that his endurance, and the number of times he could squeeze and grip is over the top. Or if they had a device just showing the fingers clinching he'd be at the top scale.

Your poor mother.
While i am surprised to see that Alex' gripstrength is not above 100lbs, i have to say that its a different kind of strength than what is used for climbing. I can close the CoC#2 (195lbs) but cannot climb steep overhangs unless the holds are jugs. I used the 40° moonboard for the first time recently and literally cannot do any move on it.
This should be mandatory for everyone at the Oscars

Knowing Alex Honnold, I feel like the next day he began to work on increasing the grip strength of his right hand.
You gave a perfectionist a new thing.

His grip is not crazy strong he just has crazy high endurance on his hands.
Precisely - if you want to get great burst strength, then research the Captains of Crush grippers - these go up to 365 lbs, or around 200 RGC. Much higher than what we see in this video, which if accurate, is less than half. Its just different types of strength.
Fair point, but I would still assume climbers/calisthenic athletes have better hand strength than most athletes

God dayum,
I (Dutchie) have been on vacation to western US a few weeks ago, visited yosemite, arches, bryce and red rock NP's to name a few and brought your book with me to read during the holiday.
The only person doing anything even remotely valuable at the Oscars.
It doesn’t matter if his grip strength is 95 lbs or. 395 lbs - the man completed a free solo climb of El Capitan. No other measurements are necessary. You cannot beat that accomplishment. He wins.
Didn't even have a spock as back up.
It does matter because without group strength, he wouldn’t be able to climb 💀

It’s something like one’s dominant hand is used for fine motor articulation and the other is better at exerting more strength as a result.
Alex was the only non-actor on stage. All the others were pretending to be something that they are not.
He's a rock climber. He does free hand climbing. He has reason for being curious
Alex is one of the bravest souls He was unintentionally using his thumb on his left hand both times which would indicate a previous wrist or radius injury that he uses his thumb for stability and support.

My left hand has better form when I play the piano, even though I'm right handed too. It literally looks like my dominant hand.
Bro I'm right handed and jack off with my left hand too. It makes it feel like someone else is doing it
often you do the fine work with your right, like opening a door with your keys while holding all the groceries with your left
And I'm a leftie and basically my whole right side of torso (pectoral muscle) and right arm and hand is stronger!
