The Chatterbait Vs. The Spinnerbait

- I get asked all the time when I choose to use a spinnerbait over a chatterbait and vice versa. The lures are somewhat interchangeable but I do believe each have times they excel over the other.

I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for six MLF Championships and won roughly a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.
So much good information packed into this one! My home lake is HEAVY on the grass, but also gets HEAVY pressure and pounded by chatterbaits, so you'll get some bites on them but the fish are getting used to it.
Only a matter of time before they start ignoring it more
No arguments here, spot on with all you said. Love a gold blade chatter bait with green pumpkin and a touch of orange. Michigan large mouth can't leave it alone.
Good perch imitation right there!
This was great timing. Fishing a small tournament tonight on a heavier vegetation lake. Ill be grabbing the jackhammer for sure. Thanks!
Good luck!
@@MattStefanFishing thank you!
This was perfect timing for me. I only had a limited amount of time to fish Sunday after church I was headed to a lake with a lot of grass so I put on the Freedom chatter bait and caught 3 bass right away, so perfect tips!!!
That’s awesome! Glad it was helpful!
The chatter bait did so much damage for me this pre-Spawn it was absurd. I had 170+ bass in 15 trips.
That’s good fishing!
I’ve probably caught at a minimum, 200 bass on a spinnerbait to every single bass I’ve caught on a Chatterbait. I’ve been fishing over 50 years though and spinnerbaits where a dominate bait before the bladed jig was around. Jimmy Houston, Ricky Green, Rick Clunn and Hank Parker cashed some big checks with them during their careers.
Spinnerbait has been winning money for a long time!
Totally agree, there are times when one works better for whatever reason
Yep!
That’s interesting, I think a spinnerbait fits the bluegill profile better than a chatterbait. But if there’s more perch than bluegill I’d throw chatterbait. I’ve never fished a lake with shad.
I am enjoying all your tips. On one of your videos you used an 1/8 th ounce buzz bait. I bought a white, black, and white/chartreuse. I fished with the white (leaving the skirt on) and added a tiny fluke and first cast got a 14 inch bass at my sons pond!! We catch and release. Keep the tips coming!!
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing!
Great information! completely separate lures to me, heck you use to completely different rods to fish them. even though they're the same weight
Very true!
Great topic, very helpful and I'm ready to put it into action....
Thanks!
This was excellent. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
i agree with your season idea .
Thanks!
2 solid tips on fishing a chatterbait in hard cover, use a flat creature bait for the trailer rigged horizontally that shape will help keep it from rolling over. The other is use one with a weed guard, I personally like the Picasso heavy cover shock blade and the Z-man crosseyez chatterbait.
Great tips!
Do you have one of wide shoulders chartreuse Ana black old school balsawood that’s a nice one.
Thanks Matt, great info 👍
You bet!
As always keep the advice and tips coming. 🙏
Will do!
Always great info. When fishing current like in a river how do you fish it...pull bait upstream downstream across stream?
I like to bring my bait downstream if possible otherwise perpendicular to current
Great tips, great video, learned alot!
Thanks!
Matt looking back I must say i agree with you on the use of these two baits, my downfall is that I need to know when to put the chatterbait away, I cant put it down sometimes. Thanks for the clarification on these two baits. Thanks and good luck.
Well I’d say if you aren’t getting bit to say. I don’t like to use any bait for more than 30 min without a bite. Make a switch and you can always go back if other baits are t working but at least you tried them
@@MattStefanFishing That sounds like a a good strategy, I will for sure put that in my mind for future reference. Thats why your the pro, thanks for the advice.
I’m the opposite. Hard for me to pick a chatter bait over a spinnerbait. Caught a 10-10 last year on a spinnerbait. Been using them over 50 years and I’ve caught way more bass on spinnerbaits. I’ll use both but if my life depended on catching a bass in an hours time I’d grab the spinnerbait. Ive got one I designed unlike any on the market and it slays. I keep that one to myself.
@@jamesbarron1202 If I caught a 10-10 on any bait it would be hard to put down…lol I have just had great success with the chatterbait and in a clutch its my go to, but im opening up my selections based on water clarity and time of year.
@@johnrayner5599 biggest downfall of a spinnerbait is it breaking on a big bass. They weaken after a lot of use and need to be retired. (After saving all the blades and skirt) I’ve lost some big fish to the wire breaking. I had a bass I clearly saw come up and shake her head well in the double digits and she broke the wire. It’s hard for me to throw a lure away. Wesley Strader has a trick to extend the life of R bend spinnerbaits by forcing a split ring over that R bend. That 10-10 I caught last year was caught on one of Wesleys spinnerbaits that he gave me.
This helps indeed. Solid video Matt. I would be curious on your thoughts between micro chatter and small spinnerbait lures. Do you see any differences for those finesse applications of these baits?
Great suggestion!
I’ve had so much more success using a spinnerbait but I still love chatterbaits
Stick with what you have confidence in
do you find yourself throwing either in crystal clear water? like 10-20ft vis
Absolutely. Water clarity doesn’t affect my decision. But I’ll tend to go spinnerbait in clear water if it’s deep.
Great info Matt, keep doin what you're doin!!!!
Thanks!
great video man keep them coming
Thanks!
Great content I need information like this
Thanks!
Hey Matt, do you ever modify a spinnerbait, chatterbait, or weedless swim jig by completely removing the skirt? If so; when, where, and why do you remove the skirt?
I ask because your guppy heads and underspins SLAY bass but do not have skirts. So, does it ever make sense to make skirted baits skirtless?
If you ever remove skirts from chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, or weedless swim jigs I sure would like to see a video explaining the factors that lead you to choosing one of these skirtless baits.
Or, if an angler should never remove the skirt you could do a video about the value and importance of skirts on chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, and weedless swim jigs.
here are some videos i did on this

@@MattStefanFishing Thanks Matt!👍🏻 I really appreciate your replies!🤜🏻🤛🏻
Thanks for the info, matt. As you know I have never caught a fish off of a spinnerbait or a chatterbait. I have recently gotten permission to fish on a private pond and I am gonna knock out those two lures. Lol. Be safe, matt
That is awesome!
@@MattStefanFishing thanks, matt
I have caught one fish on a chatterbait. Caught 100's on a spinner bait.
I have had good luck on chatter baits
It’s a great bait!
Killer info💪💪
Thanks!
I love the reel shot in Appleton WI!!! 🍺🤘🧀
Me too
chatterbait > spinnerbait . Both great lures that will probably catch the exact same fish when dragged past it. I fish northern rivers mostly aprx 15ft av depth middle with thick weedlines on the outside( millfoil/coontail) mostly . chatterbait outlasts a spinner 3x. Better hookup rate on the chatterbait. More noticeable vibration feel over spinner. Doesn't hang up as often and when it does a quick pull will allow the blade to cut through most vegetation. I have no doubt the chatterbait produces more fish while powerfishing weedlines.
all good points! thanks for sharing!
Great stuff Matt keep the good videos coming from Ohio
Thanks!
