    Down here in Florida a swim jig is always on my deck and is the first bait I pick up when starting out to find fish 95% of the time. When fishing scattered hydrilla patches on big flats or the edge of canals I’ll use a chatterbait but the swim jig is the GOTO choice most of the time

    I didn’t try a bladed jig for quite a while when it came out because I thought it was just a variant of the Spinnerbait. I’ve since found it to be more of a Square Bill that skips and goes through weeds. The swim jig is more Spinnerbait that’s more subtle and goes through a lot of cover better

    Great video!! One scenario that I’ve found the chatterbait works well on a clear lake that i fish over a swim jig is when theres a good chop. I fan cast the bladed jig with a fast paced retrieve over the sparse grass flats and the big girls like it..

    I’ve also noticed that if you want to fish the chatter bait around wood that putting a trailer on similar to what you’d put on a skipping jig - something more flat instead of vertical helps to keep it from rolling over on its side and helps it to not get snagged as essily

    as a fellow wisco guy... i pick up a swim jig / chatterbait.. honestly more than anything else... Because i feel like im supposed to, but i rarely have great success. I know their are options that i have more confidence in working that i ignore because i try to figure them out and the success just isn't there. What am i doing wrong? I fish mostly clear natural lakes with a lot of grass... To much straight retrieving?

    • @MattStefanFishing

      that would be my first guess. You want to make the baits erratic and rip it out of as much weed as possible

    Great points on both, and I picked up the David Walker Crosseyed Chatterbait, which has the titanium weed guards and it’s been a great Chatterbait for me,especially using a crawfish 🦞 style trailer ( zman goat) has been my #1 trailer with the Crosseyed Chatterbait. I love the DirtyJigs Swimjigs with an Xzone Swammer for a trailer, it seems to stay on well and has a good vibration as well. Thanks Matt😜🔨

    Both have designated combos always tied on, I usually prefer the swimjig. The lake I fish is tons of standing timber and is really clear on the south end, just seems to produce more bites.

    I’d be curious to see if you would enjoy using some of the weedless chatterbait varieties, whether they are EWG hooks like the chatter bait freedom, or just Chatterbaits with a fiber weedguard. I find it’s nice to at least have the option when fishing wood, pads, or fake grass that is snagging my chatter bait more than I would like

  • @johngalt3568

    I’ve caught a mess of Bass on the Chatterbait. I’ve never caught a fish on the swim jig. It’s not that I have on confidence in it. The swim jig has so much cred with so many anglers: you for example Matt. Part of what I want to do this fall/winter is to catch some fish on this lure to get me familiar with the feel of fishing it successfully.

    Swim jigs are killer for me. It's obvious that in the right places chatterbaits kill it. Despite lots of time with it and trying under optimal circumstances, I have never caught a single fish on a chatterbait. Idk why. But it sure doesn't catch fish locally. Like you say, I think they just prefer the more natural presentation. When its muddy and stirred up here, those molting craw colored dirty jig pitching jigs are my go to.

    This is a great comparison, all the times I've caught fish on a chatter bait has been around grass or shallow water I've tried to fish it in deeper water & it rises too quickly it will not stay down & I've never caught one on the jack hammer only on the original chatter bait, so right now in the fall I'm throwing a spinnerbait. I've been reading up on grubs & think I'm going to try them.

      @@MattStefanFishing Alright thanks, I have both of those. I've built a Phenix 7'4" S glass rod for the chatterbait and have been pretty happy but in the last three weeks I've had three fish in the five pound class (all largemouth) pull off at the boat (underwater, not jumping). I have been using 15 fluorocarbon on that set up. I have been kind of scared to use a high modulus blank on swim jigs but I have been using braid. Thanks for the input!

    I need your advice so my go bait is a jig so I have always wanted to get better at a chatter bait so whenever I am trying to learn a bait that is all that I will take out I can remember me taking a chatter bait out for weeks at a time and trying different trailer on it even painting the blade black I can feel fish grab it but I can not hook up I just can not get confidence in that bait I try to yo-yo it I fish it like a regaler jig dragging it I fish it like a lipless making different turns of the handle I don't know what to do

    • @MattStefanFishing
      @MattStefanFishing  2 года назад +1

      I dont get nearly as many bites on the chatterbait, but the quality is generally very good. my advice would be to just stick with it and give it some serious commitment. if it doesnt work go back to the jig. Confidence is king in this sport.

    I only throw open naked jigs. For every other situations, there are better options than a chatter or swim jig. Swim jigs are not good in Kalifornisthan bc of the tremendous pressure. Swim jigs have an upright action much like spinnerbaits, which are terribly horrendous. Plus, the weed guard is unnecessary evil. As for chatters, flaws galore. Drag, rising, thumping, little tail action, long hooks...etc. For example, in weeds, all you need is an ewg on a sb or whatever. Simplified. I only fish frogs over mats, never in the open, bc there are better options in the open.....and I hardly ever throw frogs without trailer hooks. Dummies do that. That's why I endorse Evergreen froggies and Renosky. Who the heck am I? I'm coming and I will put this game on glass. I will take this game to the highest level.
