    F him for taking Knights Watch. George R.R. Martin writes gay characters. George R.R. Martin was asked why he included gay characters in his books, He said, "I noticed there were gay people in the world, so they should be in my world too."

    • @boianko
      @boianko 3 месяца назад +438

      For the few homophobic ASOIAF fans I've interacted with, it seems like they're fine with the way gay characters are represented in the series because their gayness isn't "a focus" the story. They're okay with gay people as long as we stay quiet, in the background and suffer in silence in a homophobic society and that's what ASOIAF portrays for the most part. As long as being gay is a joke and seen as perverted and immoral these people are a-okay with portrayals of gay people. They have no empathy.

    • @antarchy1

      @@boianko I don't think Martin portrays gays that way. They are princes. And literally one of the deadliest fighters in the book series. The viper died really quickly though. I don't remember Martin playing them for jokes. I haven't read them in years though.

    • @boianko
      @boianko 3 месяца назад +306

      @@antarchy1 I'm not saying Martin portrays them like that necessarily, the gay characters in the books are powerful, influential and driven. However when it comes to their sexuality, they need to hide and talk in allegory. Renly marries a woman he clearly isn't attracted to because he could never achieve his political goals if he came out as gay. Jon Connington has to hide his feelings his whole life and even after the death of his one true love because they would never be accepted. The world is hetero normative for the most part (Dorne is an exception) and gays aren't allowed to exist out and about in public society unless they burry that part of themselves deep down.
      I don't think it's a bad thing to write the world that way, it's realistic, and I don't think George is portraying homophobia as a good thing. The people who already have homophobic ideas read about this homophobic world and think "oh wow, that's so cool", the same way sexist ASOIAF fans appreciate the realistic portrayal of how women were treated in the olden days. They don't empathise with the plights of these characters, they see them as people who either got unlucky in the way they were born and need to suck it up, or as people who annoyingly struggle against a system that rightfully tries to put them in their place.

    • @antarchy1
      @antarchy1 3 месяца назад +50

      @@boianko Isn't that more him writing about political intrigue in a medieval setting. It's good Drama and it's realistic to the way those societies were. I don't think it was a conscious choice on his part. It just fits the world and story. But I haven't read them in at least 10 years. So I barely remember anything about it, and I wouldn't have been dissecting the way he wrote gay characters back then.

      @@boiankoI am honestly always baffled by those kinds of people, the whole point of ASOIF is that its world is AWFUL in almost every societal way imaginable, George's writing is about pointing out every flaw possible about those societies and our own. Sure, it's realistic within the boundaries of a fictional effing world, so by agreeing on how those characters are treated, you are actually doing what the story is criticizing, it's never portrayed as how thing should be. I am honestly surprised these people enjoy something they don't understand, it's media illiteracy at its peak

    He actually says that we're different from animals because we know right and wrong, so we can know homosexual sex is immoral. Well, dolt, it's not immoral. ONE SICKNESS and your chances to survive is super low or you're handicapped for a long time leading to more troubles and starting a spiral. You would need to start a fire, find food and animals to get pelt from. All this takes so much time and energy for one person that it's basically impossible. You sprained your ankle ? Too bad, you have to continue hunting and gathering.
      Also hunting is super risky because you won't be able to get yourself fixed up or at least get back to your encampment if ever injured in any major survivable way.

    10:45 there *are* some indications of what being gay does in a survival context, depending on the animals. Penguins, for example - having a small proportion of homosexual partners in a population means that there are some number of mated pairs that don’t have children. And this is useful, because many species of penguin practice adoption. Getting food from antarctic waters is really dangerous - much like other survival behaviours - and so when parents die their children will be left behind. Then, these stable but non-child-producing couples are available to take in the children that are orphaned. If not for them, these children would likely be abandoned and the energy and care that went into raising them would go to waste
    Homosexuality is thought to be common to social species for reasons like this - it is evolutionarily advantageous to broaden social dynamics beyond just family units if you seek strength in numbers, and some species seem to have gayness as a load-bearing component of this initial social fabric. It is, however, less clear what homosexuality does for more solitary species, or ones that don’t use family units as a building block. It’s possible they inherited it from social creatures further back in time, but that explanation is unlikely to account for all of them.

  • @lukaslambs5780

    One hypothesis for how homosexuality can be selected for in nature involves inclusive fitness. To over simplify, it suggests that since gay people don’t have biological children (historically at least) they would be able to invest more resources into the children of their relatives (nieces and nephews for example). These children are genetic relatives of the gay person meaning that they are actually furthering their own genes in a roundabout way, meaning that over time there is a chance that this behavior will persist in a social species (like humans)

    A small nitpick with this video. While we don't know the exact biochemical pathways and haven't isolated individual genes that are responsible for homosexuality, we do know for almost certain that sexual orientation is at least partly genetically influenced in some way. But there are other factors that can influence sexual orientation like uterine enviroments and prenatal hormone levels. We also do know of many neuroanatomical brain structures that influence one's sexual orientation such as the bed nucleus of the stria termalis, hypothalamic uncinate nucleus and others.
    Edit: This is not to say that homosexuality cannot be passed on evolutionarily. There are plenty of ways genes can be present within individuals without being expressed, only to be expressed in later generations. This could include but is not limited to gene dominance, gene dormancy, epigenetics and polygenics (the last of which is certainly true in the case of sexual orientation).
    For example, worker bees never reproduce, despite that, worker bees still exist. Worker bee genes are still present in the queen bee, even if they are not expressed in the queen. Hence worker bee genes are passed down evolutionarily without worker bees ever being the one to pass down those genes.

    I then had to endure about a month of him talking about how RUclips had it in for him and he wasn’t getting the views.
    I also had similar comments from other ‘similar’ channels (dungeon craft for example) but without the ‘woe is me’ angle.
    I unsubscribed to shad.
    Tbh, I just don’t think he is that good. He goes on and on and on about one point ad nauseam.

    Something I want to add, we still have mountains of evidence for evolution even without a fossil record. From genetics to it being observed in both the wild and the lab. The fossil record is just a cherry on top.
    This theory has been around for more then 2 and half centuries and we've gotten far more evidence then Charles Darwin had in his day.

The audio was effing terrible, but the first ten minutes was basically Shad, as DM, basically sexually abusing Lindy's character. That was pretty much it for me because you could tell it was making people uncomfortable, especially LB, and the fucking sophomoric glee Shad had over it convinced me he is one of those types of DMs/Players you see on RPG Horror Story channels and that was pretty much it for me.

    Just wanted to chime in to say that I am fairly confident his "Knights Watch" channel was actually a secondary channel for this sort of thing even when he was more active, and a bit more "closeted" about his right wing views on his main channel.
    I think what kind of threw him out into the open air was a combination of his own rising lunacy in the face of this western world wide "culture war" nonsense, combined with going heavy on AI, and getting called out for it. And we know that the easiest way to turn a run of the mill ranter into a raving full bore lunatic is to give them a "victim complex" so they can pretend to play martyr in the face of TRIGGERED LIBS for a bit. I think once he saw his main channel sort of collapse for a variety of reasons and probably saw that playing angry internet sword man who yells at pop culture was getting him some traction, off he goes.
    As other people have said, it's sad because he was never a great youtuber mind, but I recall quite enjoying his earlier Shadiversity content. He seemed to have a genuine passion for it which showed, and I feel like in a better world he'd have used to to up his history game and maybe find a way through such facts and logic to disassociate from his more harmful mindsets. Alas...

Now seeing his content moving to more hurtful stuff and also less well-thought-out things, it really hurts. Seeing people who share hurtful things, but in the same foul stroke, end up also strengthening people's dislike for the religion with ill opinions, and using the religion as a defense for bigotry, when no doctrine supports that kind of hurt and hate. It's dissapointing, especially as I enjoyed his channel and am a member of the alphabet soup.

    Paleontologist here, great dunk on the anti-LGBGTIA+ and anti-evolution weirdos! Two things: humans having lots of genetic issues is due to the bottleneck ~1 ma where the human population dropped to about 1200 breeding individuals, so our genetic diversity is extremely limited (the two most distantly related chimps from the same family have more diverse genomes than the two most distantly related humans on Earth). The randomness is true in most cases, the selective events are not trait-dependent, they just favor some forms over others (generally for biomechanical or chemical reasons), but that does exclude all of the instances of sexual selection where it is clear that mating is non-random and individuals where exagerrated traits are more likely to breed.

Getting a cancerous tumour surgically removed is unnatural, but it's not bad. *Wearing glasses* is unnatural, but it's not bad. Something being natural/unnatural is not indicative of whether it's good or bad. A prime example of something that's natural and also horrifically bad is the gimpi-gimpi, a plant native to Australia that, when touched, has tiny needles that inject a neurotoxin that basically lights your nerves on fire. It's called Kin Selection, btw. There are traits that don't help the individual pass on genes, but may help related individuals pass on genes, some of which they share. In this case, a social animal having non-breeding adults that are still able bodied and capable of gathering food is a huge evolutionary advantage for the group.
    Biologists figured out Kin Selection before they even knew how genetics work.

    • @SirRebrl
      @SirRebrl 3 месяца назад +75

      Pointedly, it reduces in-group competition for resources. As long as there's enough replacement of breeding individuals, concentrating more support for fewer young is more effective at keeping those young alive. The logic becomes increasingly clear in smaller groups - if food is scarce, is it better to have meager gatherings split between clusters of cousins, leaving everyone hungry, or to have parents and aunts/uncles working together to feed one group of siblings enough to grow healthy for competition outside the family?

      I'd also like to point out that the evolutionary effort required to eliminate homosexuality would itself have far reaching consequences. Species don't actually have the ability to just selectively change their attributes at will. Changing a gene or two could lead to many other changes in addition to eliminating the possibility that some members will be gay. And since natural selection is the only method we really have for this, it makes sense that it stuck around.

      "If you think in terms of a year, plant rice; if in terms of ten years, plant trees; if in terms of 100 years, teach the people." -- Confucius

Since their genes are already mostly the same, this helps the trait pass down through generations.

      I'm a teacher and I'm basically the "gay uncle" (gay niece, more accurately lmfao) for a whole bunch of rotating kids. I'll have no desire of reproducing even if I wasn't gay, I've done my part tenfold already.
      People concerned with biological reproduction forget how much work and organization at a society level is required for us to maintain natality rates. "Gay" people certainly aren't a threat to human evolution and even might be a sign of a new socialadaptation that moves the responsibility of reproductive work OUT of the closed environment of thetraditional family, into a more efficient and healthy community based approach.

      So, it sounds like their system they live under, their believes they are grown to, all this, it forces them to a position where they hate that part in themselves, and effectively project it onto all others, because they refuse to believe that being different on that scale (or many other scales) is normal, being the same is what they perceive as normal.
      Everything's got to be very standard and singular without any variation, all things different are evil, scary, or otherwise untrustworthy (and they certainly couldn't be any more different than anyone else, thus all must have these feelings, and choose to actively pursue them, or deny them). We didn't have "bedrooms" - or even permanent homes to live in - until agriculture made it possible to stay at the same place your whole life.
      Back then, when we were living in small groups, you couldn't be absolutely sure who fathered which children. So the nurturing was likely done by the group as a whole. In those circumstances, having 10-20% not procreate would be a great benefit for the groups survival.

    Hi guys!
    Gay Bio student popping in to say that they are actually starting to spot genetic differences between gay and straight men specifically. Nothing is really set in stone, of course, but they did find a cluster of about 30 genes highly corolated with homosexuality. What's funny is that those genes are basically always present and unlocked hormonally via epigenetics when in the womb. A current theory for this is something called kinship selection. Looking at factors that make men more likely to be homosexual (next male birth in succession is more likely and mothers stress/duress seems to make a boy more likely to be gay) its believed that they take on a general caretaker role unable to have children. And if im able to theoretically help my siblings produce more children through helping care for them rather than make my own, it becomes a beneficial reproductive strategy because there's more children in the next gen. And since my mother gave all of us our cluster of gay genes but only unlocked mine, all of my neices and nephews have those genes to continue the gay. Stunting parts of your bloodline also prevents overpopulation. Since we are a social species, it's easy to see us evolving biological fail safes to make sure we dont starve.

    • @malachitoler5789
      @malachitoler5789 2 месяца назад +1

      I think what I wanted to put as a takeaway is that homosexuality doesn't have to be some defect in the human species just because it doesn't directly aid human reproduction. The principles behind biology wrap, warp, twist, and turn in many weird ways, but all life "cares about" is making more of itself. It doesn't care how it does.

    Well this is sad to see - probably even sadder for his family. His brother Jazza is like a huge kids RUclipsr, does art & what-not. Used to see him on Drawfee often (& they’re like the biggest LGBTQ+ supporting channel with no LGBTQ+ people that I know of, ha).

      I think they're from a Mormon family, but Jazza left the faith a long time ago. So I wouldn't be sure that huge parts of his family other than his brother don't agree with his views.

    Biologist here:
    First of all, it can be an evolutionary disadvantage to have all adults breeding in a family or social group, as infant mortality can rise due to the high child-to-adult ratio and resources can become depleted. In these cases, non-breeding adults who participate in childcare strongly improve the fitness of the kids, on the whole making 'homosexual behavior' a win for the family and, by extension, the homosexual individuals own genes as well since their are bringing up siblings (50% similar genes), nieces and nephews (17% similar genes).
    90% of giraffes mounting other giraffes is male on male, and they are seeming willing participants. This occurs even when there are females present.
    Lions are not as high of stats, but show similar behavior.
    First encounter of squid s*xual acts was both gay and interspecies, with the smaller species male topping the larger one.
    We've known of penguin homosexuality since the 1900s, but the poor Christian scientists where so aghast and befuddled they covered up their research by writing their findings in Greek, making it primarily inaccessible to general society - potentially due to the risk of being ostracized as well, since they could be accused of making up random stuff in Antarctica to then come home and 'spread their filth' to general society.
    Dolphins form pair bonds with the same sex, often between breeding seasons, and engage in s*xual behavior.
    Many parrots have same-sex couples as a first choice, too. None of that is by any means due to absence of alternatives
    Finally Bonobos shouldn't be held to human standards wrt p*do stuff. In their species it's normal and common, with youngs initiating things themselves a lot of them time. Further, they primarily participate in oral, both giving and receiving. In our species, a majority of cultures keep kids away from that sorta thing (side-eyes aspects of A. Greece real hard here) and kids rarely naturally engage in such stuff and form trauma around it. To Bonobos its an evolutionary adaptation, to humans it is not
    Bonobos are an absolutely wonderful species and I will take no slander of them. Meerkats, however, a totally a different thing.

      @@manxcatcoot Thanks for taking the bait ;)
      Their are the most homicidal little maniacs on the planet. They have an intraspecies murder rate of 20% deaths occurring at meerkat hands compared to 12% in chinchillas (second on the list alongside other mongoose species), 6% in top predators like many big cats and an approximation of ~2% in our fellow ape species (excluding Bonobos and Orangutans from here).
      Humans swivel between 1-2% depending on where we are in history. The average propensity to murder in mammals is about 0.3%, so even humans are rather staggering. To top it off, it's primarily infanticide against another female's young in the social group.
      Wanna emphasize I don't hate them by any means, but I ain't protecting them from public outrage so long it remains verbal. Let's just say, I've really questioned Timon's reasons to leave the nest in Lion King 1.5 after I reached adulthood.

      @@manxcatcoot I actually already responded to your comment, but apparently YT doesn't like when I talk about this topic - and you'll see why in a moment.
      Cause meerkats have the highest m*rder rate of all mammals at a whooping 20%, from what I understand of all meerkat endings of life, coming that the paws of another meerkat. This contrasts the ~12% of chinchillas and other mongoose species, the ~6% in many predator species like big cats and the 2% average for primate species among which humanity differ span between 1-2% depending on time in history.
      It further contrasts the 0.3 percent average determined in all mammals as a whole. Specifically, meerkat females will cease the existence of youngs of other females in the group in high rates to 'make way' for their own young to get food and space.
      As such, I will tolerate these mofos getting blasted by public outrage, even tho I don't advocate for hate and demand it remains verbal. But I gotta say, Timon leaving the nest in Lion King 1.5 was cast in a whole new light for me.
