that method will likely to lengthen your startup and pre render time cuz max will load all those ext file addresses. easiest way is to use asset relinker script.

try, on the material editor (M), once you have the material, click in the icon that is a square with a quadriculated circle inside). Sometimes it doesn't show bcs you need to activate that!
