@@minditpundit8660 As LB mentioned, it meant trying to get the attention of incoming boats or planes as a distress signal usually when someone got stranded on an island or was lost. The light that reflected back would catch the attention of sailors or pilots who would then radio out for help.
I think this was the only time when the other nominees were genuinely happy that someone else besides them won the award.
