The whole song! I hope you enjoy practising this with me. I thought you might like it like this, so I left a couple of bars between all the verses, so there’s time to breath for a while and prepare for the next verse.
Thank you so much for joining with me on this journey of cutting the song into very small pieces and opening the meaning of the story along with the words and syllables. I’m so happy to think that there are so many people around the world singing this song and enjoying music and the special connection between other humans on this Earth through music. I’m also very proud of all of you who have the energy and time to try and learn this! I so much wish I could hear you singing, and see you dancing and smiling! =)
Your feedback has been very important to me and always will. Love you all! Stay safe and stay tuned! I’m not going to stop here! =)
IEVAN POLKKA - THE STORY
The storyteller is a young lad, who has a crush on a girl named Ieva (a Savonian version of Eeva, the Finnish Eva). The couple wants to dance together, no matter what. It’s a story about affection and the importance of dancing.
There is a sound of polka rhythm drifting from the neighbour (it might be Ieva’s house where people have gathered to dance). The lad says his feet long for dance. Ieva has her mother guarding her, but Ieva fools her and gets to dance with the lad. He’s saying: ”We don’t care about any restrictions when we are dancing all over the floor”.
Ieva is smiling widely as people wish her good luck. (Not sure, but maybe ’cause they had noticed the young fine lad being interested in her and people look at her with an implying gaze.) Everybody has their hair wet from sweating on the dance floor, and the fiddle is howling and wailing. In the end the lad says: ”I don’t mind being wet when dancing to and fro”.
Well, now Ieva’s mother is singing hymns in her own room (she probably didn’t like the idea of having a ball in her house). In the meantime the lad is wooing Ieva in the room next door (having a break from dancing). And the lad says that he doesn’t care about what any old women say as long as he can dance.
”We had fun after the dancing, and I got to canoodle once”. (It’s not obvious what Kettunen is saying here, but he alludes presumably to making love somewhere.) When they get home, Ieva’s mother is angry and Ieva starts to weep. The lad says: ”I told Ieva that it doesn’t matter and we’ll be dancing again”.
The lad continues: ”I told the mother: you shut your mouth, or else I won’t guarantee your health. You’ll stay healthy if you grab your bones and have a rest in your room”. He also tells that he doesn’t care for being so gentle when he’s taking the ladies all over the dance floor.
The lad is speaking to Ieva’s mother: ”I’ll tell you, you need to chew, ’cause I’m not to be swallowed just like that. (meaning that he won’t give up easily.) You can go from east to west, but I’m not giving up Ieva.” And he continues: ”For this lad doesn’t care for being too modest, when dancing to and fro”

It's pretty rare to see the actual singers get grassroot and bother teaching people to sing this. Props up to her for doing this.
Thanks! =)
The older she gets, the more beautiful she is!
After years loving it, I've decided to learn Ievan polka. I've started today. What a phonological nightmare... For the moment, the only bit I can sing properly is "Salivili hipput tupput tapput
äppyt tipput hilijalleen.". But I won't give up. Because that song's worth the pain. (I do think it.) I want to express my admiration to people who managed to learn Ievan polka, and wish good luck to those who are considering it.
You can do it!! Remember that it doesn't have to be perfect. =)

Nuapurista kuulu se polokan tahti

Thank you Hanni!
I believe these times of the pandemic have brought two much better viruses on YT and TikTok; 'The Wellerman', thanks to a young Scottish singer/musician Nathan Evans, who put a video on TikTok, and loads of people used that as base and added song and instruments.
Ievan polkka is the other one.
IF anyone possibly could tell me 1. How did it become a vocaliod's song in Japan? How did it get there? I think it was dancing around in South Korea as well 🤔
2. HOW DID IT END UP IN TURKEY, with the musician, drummer, Bilal Göregen???
Anyway, his drumming (a single hand drum!) and, yeah, hm, sort of singing, made success, reached South African musician 'The Kiffness' (David Scott, almost some irony in that? What is it with the Scots these days 😂?) who made an amazing re-mix, him playing synthesizer and trumpet, addition of a saxophone and violin, played by musicians from other countries, and "The Vibing Cat" (which happens to be Canadian).
This spread like wild fire (if one dares to use that word nowadays!), there's an uncountable number of versions out there now. Try google 'Ievan Polkka'! This is what I call "go viral" 😂 😂!
Some people have made loops of both Kiff's re-mix and other, some based on Kiff's, up to, what I know, TEN HOURS!
Ten hours of Ievan Polkka, a blind, Turkish street musician and a South African musician who works miracles on his mini synth. A follow of other musicians from all over the world, Kiff's wife dancing (not polka though!) and a vibing, white, Canadian cat!
This is what The Internet was built for!!! To connect people all over the world! ❤️❤️❤️

well Hungarian is closest language to Finnish besides Estonian so atleast you can read more than 20 percent of the words without your tongue going inside out
@@vseslavkazakov356 : regarding the pronunciation, that's true. We have zero problem to pronounce these words. But that's it.
I couldn't understand a single word from the song... :(
@@vseslavkazakov356 I'm also Hungarian and as the other person said before me I could too with a huge accent sound out and pronounce it even reading it too (take away all the double letters) But to be honest our language is nothing like. I mean I don't understand not one word in Finnish. The Finnugor so they say were like common ancestors but the Finns and the Lapps and Sami people are northern Uralic people while the Huns from Today Mongolia/InnerMongolia and the whites are from the southern Uralic tribes. As far as the 2 languages like earth and sky like English to Chinese. They more belong to the Scandinavian people.
@@vseslavkazakov356 No, the languages closest to Finnish are Karelian and Vepsian. Then comes Estonian and some recently dead Baltic languages.
The 14 or so different Sami languages (mutually unintelligible) come next, but far far away.
Hungarian is a long long long time away (4,000-6,000 years). In fact Hungarian is the language in the world with its closest relative farthest away from it, in the Urals.

She's soo adorable. I'm crying
English translation/Lyrics:
The sound of a polka drifted from my neighbour's
and set my feet a-tapping oh!
Ieva's mother had her eye on her daughter but
Ieva she managed to fool her, you know.
'Cause who's going to listen to mother saying no
when we're all busy dancing to and fro!
Ieva was smiling, and the fiddle was wailing
as people crowded around to wish her luck.
Everyone was hot but it didn't seem to bother
the handsome young man, the dashing buck.
'Cause who's going to mind a drop of sweat
when he's all busy dancing to and fro!
Ieva's mother shut herself away
in her own quiet room to hum a hymn.
Leaving our hero to have a spot of fun
in a neighbour's house when the lights are dim.
'Cause, what does it matter what the old folks say
when you're all busy dancing to and fro!
When the music stopped then the real fun began
and that's when the laddie fooled around.
When he took her home, when the dancing was over
her mother angrily waiting they found.
But I said to her, Ieva, now don't you weep
and we'll soon be dancing to and fro!
I said to her mother now stop that noise
or I won't be responsible for what I do.
If you go quietly and stay in your room
you won't get hurt while your daughter I woo.
'Cause this fine laddie is a wild sort of guy
when he's all busy dancing to and fro!
One thing I tell you is you won't trap me,
no, you won't find me an easy catch.
Travel to the east and travel to the west but
Ieva and I are going to make a match.
'Cause this fine laddie ain't the bashful sort
when he's all busy dancing to and fro.
This song always makes me such a good mood it sounds so friendly and peacefully ☺️

That """"joke"""" again in here? That's not funny!
I can’t get enough of this song, I find myself singing this part on my walks. “salivili hipput tupput tapput äppyt tipput hilijalleen”.
Legitimately one of my favourite songs of all time, the melody, the harmonising and the narrative (which I didn't learn till much after the song had become a favourite of mine. I am from the "leekspin" generation of people who, I think, first popularised this song online, ofc it was an international folk classic long before that, but I do like to think that my generation did do it's part towards making it a part of the cultural bedrock of the internet).
I've been trying to learn the song for decades now phonetically (to a reasonable degree of success, but not to the point where I would feel confident in performing it anywhere near a Finnish speaking person lol), so to find this guide is fantastic. I'm going to stick with it and I one day it'll be my party trick.
Thanks so much for years of entertainment and for bringing this wonderful song into so many people's lives.
Did you find all the tutorials? =)
@@HanniAutere I haven't yet as I am caught up with other tasks at the moment (I am my disabled Mum's full time carer), but I have started a playlist so I can put them all in one place.
Thank you again, hope you are having a wonderful day.
@@WeWillAlwaysHaveVALIS Ok. Good luck! =)
There would be no wars if everyone starts singing this song
Your smile at this video (and the others) shows how passionate and heartful your work with music is! I’ve been replaying this video over and over in the last days, and it has been so fun to learn the lyrics and sing along. A great hug from Santa Cruz do Sul - RS, Brazil
Obrigada! =)
looks like every single finnish word could serve as an unbreakable password !!
however, I looove the song deeply
=)
I'm 21 right now and I first heard this song when I was in middle school - the first version I heard was actually a cover and in another language (No, I don't mean the vocaloid version) - When my parents heard me listening to the covered version they told me that they already knew this song but that there was an original and when I first heard it I just thought "Wow - I don't know what they sing about but it sounds so harmonic, cute and upbeat" 💕✨ It really is a song I can come back to and listen to in order to feel a bit more calm and happy 🌱🎶
Greetings to your parents! =)
In this slowed down version with the lyrics it is super fun to sing along
Ok hanni you still answering. yet 4 months old this video. Thanks for this song .I watched previous versions of this song and the time was 4oclock at morning.... Like your rhythm and voice. you all 4 rocking....
After following all the tutorials, the payoff is so enjoyable! This song is bouncy and happy, learning it has been an absolute blast
I'm so happy to hear that!=)
I moved from a Finnish-American area of Michigan to New Hampshire. It took a year, but I'm finding American Finns here, too. I went to an event with traditional music and pastries. It was wonderful, and I was quite pleased when I heard the instrumental versions of Säkkijärven Polkka, and Ieva's Polka❤
Me practice the song slowly while spinning holding leek:
=)
I love this song from 5 years old ❤️I hope you are always healthy❤️
I’ve been practicing and perfecting this song for a year now. Today I can say I sang this at my grandmas funeral, as she sang this to me as a young child, and asked me if I would before she passed. Thank you Hanni, you did me a great favor.
My condolences for your grandma. I bet she was a wonderful person, singing Ievan polkka. =)
I decided to start learning Finnish mostly because I had listened to a lot of Finnish songs, and now I am trying to learn how to sing this song. It's going quite well!
Espero y te salga bien un cover de esta cancion :D
Can't wait for it to go live!!!
16年前に日本でとても流行りました。
もちろん今も愛されている名曲ですね。
