The whole song! I hope you enjoy practising this with me. I thought you might like it like this, so I left a couple of bars between all the verses, so there’s time to breath for a while and prepare for the next verse.
Thank you so much for joining with me on this journey of cutting the song into very small pieces and opening the meaning of the story along with the words and syllables. I’m so happy to think that there are so many people around the world singing this song and enjoying music and the special connection between other humans on this Earth through music. I’m also very proud of all of you who have the energy and time to try and learn this! I so much wish I could hear you singing, and see you dancing and smiling! =)
Your feedback has been very important to me and always will. Love you all! Stay safe and stay tuned! I’m not going to stop here! =)
IEVAN POLKKA - THE STORY
The storyteller is a young lad, who has a crush on a girl named Ieva (a Savonian version of Eeva, the Finnish Eva). The couple wants to dance together, no matter what. It’s a story about affection and the importance of dancing.
There is a sound of polka rhythm drifting from the neighbour (it might be Ieva’s house where people have gathered to dance). The lad says his feet long for dance. Ieva has her mother guarding her, but Ieva fools her and gets to dance with the lad. He’s saying: ”We don’t care about any restrictions when we are dancing all over the floor”.
Ieva is smiling widely as people wish her good luck. (Not sure, but maybe ’cause they had noticed the young fine lad being interested in her and people look at her with an implying gaze.) Everybody has their hair wet from sweating on the dance floor, and the fiddle is howling and wailing. In the end the lad says: ”I don’t mind being wet when dancing to and fro”.
Well, now Ieva’s mother is singing hymns in her own room (she probably didn’t like the idea of having a ball in her house). In the meantime the lad is wooing Ieva in the room next door (having a break from dancing). And the lad says that he doesn’t care about what any old women say as long as he can dance.
”We had fun after the dancing, and I got to canoodle once”. (It’s not obvious what Kettunen is saying here, but he alludes presumably to making love somewhere.) When they get home, Ieva’s mother is angry and Ieva starts to weep. The lad says: ”I told Ieva that it doesn’t matter and we’ll be dancing again”.
The lad continues: ”I told the mother: you shut your mouth, or else I won’t guarantee your health. You’ll stay healthy if you grab your bones and have a rest in your room”. He also tells that he doesn’t care for being so gentle when he’s taking the ladies all over the dance floor.
The lad is speaking to Ieva’s mother: ”I’ll tell you, you need to chew, ’cause I’m not to be swallowed just like that. (meaning that he won’t give up easily.) You can go from east to west, but I’m not giving up Ieva.” And he continues: ”For this lad doesn’t care for being too modest, when dancing to and fro”

Thanks! =)
Grassroot?
That song is from forever, old folksong in Finland. They didnt make the son nut sang it and got quite farmors for it. Alot now like 30 yrs😂
Live the song. I habe litsened to it like some 25 years. Never get old
After years loving it, I've decided to learn Ievan polka. I've started today. What a phonological nightmare... For the moment, the only bit I can sing properly is "Salivili hipput tupput tapput

Definitely. I'd certainly take music class if the teacher was Hanni.
I remember being addicted to this song when I was a kid, I kept watching the leek spin videos. ❤

The older she gets, the more beautiful she is!
Everytime i hear this song Ievan pollka i got smile and become happy
Yesss! Exactly! :D You just cannot be sad when You hear this song! It makes, I guess, everyone happy when being played! :)
Thank you for making this slow version. I'm in love with this song for over 10 years and learning how to sing this song in the official ver is impossible for me. Now I can slowly learn this song!
This brings back childhood memories of listening to this at school and only being able to sing along to the "Salivili hipput typput tapput appyt tipput hilijalleen"
Wow, now I know this whole beautiful song by heart, and I can sing it whenever I want. Hello from Russia :)
This woman is such a pure blessing. Love her!

I am so beyond happy to see members of Loituma still around and participating on the internet like this. I remember when I first seen this song I was like 7 or so and it sounded bizarre, but really really cool, and now just today I saw the 2021 version with all of you aged, yet you all look the same, and you hold onto the same joy seemingly which is just refreshing.
I feel very privileged watching these tutorials directly from Hanni. Kiitos paljon!
I’ve seen the original video for this song in 2001, and noticed this lady and thought to myself: she looks like a teacher, a teacher which knows how to make her classes pleasant to its pupils. And now, after more than 20 years, my thoughts are confirmed! Such a beautiful human! And song! And language!
I'm happy to hear this! =D
You guys noticed how much she was happier at her line? Still feels the joy.

I don't know what these words mean because I am an Arab, but I was moving my tongue and trying to sing with you and I loved this song from the first moment 👍👏

IEVAN POLKKA (Finnish lyrics by Eino Kettunen)
(Improvised solo by Hanni Autere)
Nuapurista kuulu se polokan tahti
Jalakani pohjii kutkutti.
Ievan äiti se tyttöösä vahti
Vaan kyllähän Ieva sen jutkutti,
Sillä ei meitä silloin kiellot haittaa
Kun myö tanssimme laiasta laitaan.
Salivili hipput tupput tapput
äppyt tipput hilijalleen.
Ievan suu oli vehnäsellä
Ko immeiset onnee toevotti.
Peä oli märkänä jokaisella
Ja viulu se vonku ja voevotti.
Ei tätä poikoo märkyys haittaa
Sillon ko laskoo laiasta laitaan.
Salivili hipput…
Ievan äiti se kammarissa
Virsiä veisata huijjuutti,
Kun tämä poika naapurissa
ämmän tyttöä nuijjuutti.
Eikä tätä poikoo ämmät haittaa
Sillon ko laskoo laiasta laitaan.
Salivili hipput…
Hilipati hilipati hilipati hillaa
Hilipati hilipati hilipampaa
Jalituli jallaa talituli jallaa

Rimpati rallaa ripirapi rallaa
Rumpati ruppa ripirampuu

Tulituli lallan tipirantuu
Jatsa tsappari dikkari dallan
Dittari dillan ditsdan dullaa
Dipidapi dallaa ruppati rupiran

Jaaba dilla stillan deia duua daava
Daava daava duuvu duuvu duuvjavuu

Daiga daiga duu duu deijadoo
Siellä oli lystiä soiton jäläkeen
Sain minä kerran sytkyyttee.
Kottiin ko mäntii ni ämmä se riitelj’
Ja Ieva jo alako nyyhkyyttee.
Minä sanon Ievalle mitäpä se haittaa
Laskemma vielähi laiasta laitaa.
Salivili hipput…
Muorille sanon jotta tukkee suusi
En ruppee sun terveyttäs takkoomaan.
Terveenä peäset ku korjoot luusi
Ja määt siitä murjuus makkoomaan.
Ei tätä poikoo hellyys haittaa

Sillä ei tätä poikoo kainous haittaa

I used to search for folk songs from many countries as a hobby when I was a teen. I also learnt the lyrics. I remember well how I learnt Swedish, German, Russian, Danish, and some of your Finnish songs with Loituma.
It took me months to even memorize some parts of Ievan Polkka! 😂 and today I barely remember anything but if I see the written text like here, I remember how to sing it with all the tones and pauses. I never thought back then, 15 years ago, that one day we’d have the luxury to have you guide us through this song! I am truly grateful of YT for bringing us closer to artists like you 💕 you are a beautiful woman and I will admire you and Loituma my entire life. Greetings from Brazil 🇧🇷 ☺️
Legitimately one of my favourite songs of all time, the melody, the harmonising and the narrative (which I didn't learn till much after the song had become a favourite of mine. I am from the "leekspin" generation of people who, I think, first popularised this song online, ofc it was an international folk classic long before that, but I do like to think that my generation did do it's part towards making it a part of the cultural bedrock of the internet).
I've been trying to learn the song for decades now phonetically (to a reasonable degree of success, but not to the point where I would feel confident in performing it anywhere near a Finnish speaking person lol), so to find this guide is fantastic. I'm going to stick with it and I one day it'll be my party trick.

@@thedeegeesaga I agree. Those who actually do sing the full version of the song sound better because their not repeating the same part of the song over and over. I was happy to stumble across this new version so many years later and learn that you put up many other interesting videoes like this one - subscribed from Denmark! :-)
Edit: This shortly made me forget about the horrors happening in Ukraine. It’s such a sad and uncertain time for so many people - I’m praying for everyone in the country and the rest of Europe.
OMG I finally found you, I watched your family video singing this song around year 2004. BIG FAN here LOTS OF LOVE and RESPECT from India
If you had told the members of Loituma back in 1995 that their rendition of an already seventy year old song would become a worldwide viral sensation because of an anime video only a decade later and they'd still be having fun with it into the 2020s with Hanni doing videos like this, they'd have all probably looked at you like you were high. But here we are and damn is it fun.
Listen to the song you played is like listen to the sound from the heaven (In Chinese: 天籁之音). The song is beautiful and the pronunciation of the lyrics is clear. Compared with other versions, I believe this one is much easy to learn. Thank you for playing the whole song in a slow pace. Much appreciated!
Thaaat was awesome! Super helpful to get the pronounciation actually way closer to how it should be as a non-native speaker! Many thanks ^-^
Two years ago I discovered loituma ievan polkka 😍 Thank you ❤️
Am still learning ... " Lyrics" 💯
I love how You sing with a twinkle, sparks in your eyes, with soul and love! Thanks!
She's very cute, and her smile is infectious.
