There is an extra letter L in about 6:10. I'm sorry about this!
Dear all! So many of you have told me that you want to learn Finnish or that you have already learned this song in Finnish. It's an honour to me, and to help you with your aims I decided to make some new videos. This is the first clip in a series of tutorial videos for learning Ieva's polka in Finnish. I hope you find it useful! I will make a similar clip for every verse.
The language in this song is not literary language, but the Eastern dialect from Savo district. So this is not the kind of language you would learn in "Finnish for beginners" course. :-)
I have made the whole thing by myself and I'm aware of the fact, that it's not professional quality in any way. But I'm learning new things all the time and hope you are too. Have fun and let me know how you are doing with your Finnish studies! :-)
    EDIT!
OK, here's the story of the first verse. My translations are not exhaustive, but give a rough idea of the meaning of the words. The text is written in dialect, so there are words that can't be translated unambiguously. But I hope you get the idea of the story, which is told in a humorous and down to earth style. Lyrics by Eino Kettunen.
    FIRST VERSE:
There is a dancing night going on in a barn in a small village. The boy hears the drifting sound of polka and he wants to go dancing. Now, Ieva is the one he wants to take dancing, but her mother is keeping an eye on Ieva. She fools her and gets to dance with our lad anyway. The boy says that Ieva and he just ignore restrictions and they dance from one side of the dance floor to the other. Probably for hours. :-) Then comes the chorus which doesn't mean anything except the last word would be something like slowly or little by little.
    5:50 The whole verse
    Music: Traditional
    Lyrics: Eino Kettunen
Arrangement & new lyric parts by LOITUMA (Hanni Autere, Sari Kauranen, Anita Lehtola-Tollin, Timo Väänänen)

Fun fact: Finnish is one of the very few languages in Europe that is not Indo-European. Indo-European is the most dominant language family that spans across most of Europe, the Americas, the Persian plateau, and the Northern Indian Subcontinent. Most of us find Finnish very unique and magical because it is part of a rare language family (Uralic) that is not very well known or heard by the people other than the native speakers.

As a Finn, it was a shock for me to visit Hungary for the first time. I had been listening to Germanic and Slavic languages for a week, and suddenly on the train from Prague to Budapest I heard this group of girls speak something that sounded.... normal! Like I should have understood what they said, but didn't, and yet it sounded so cozy and familiar. She said something to the effect of "körökö" or so, and it felt so right after hearing "strshlng" and "vtrshk" all week!
It was extra trippy because Hungary doesn't at all look like Finland. It was very beautiful, though!

You have no idea how much I've wished this. As someone who was introduced to this song by some anime meme from the mid 2000s as well as the hatsune miku remix, I've just been completely enamored by this song since I was a small child, especially Loituma's adaptation. Even though I'm simply an american girl, who in no way is finnish, because I was introduced to this song at such a young age, it has grown to be extremely nostalgic and meaningful to me, as strange as that may seem. And so to learn how to sing it properly just feels very cathartic to me.

Hanni, I grew up with this song throughout high school and it was always my dream to perform it in front of a crowd. Ieavan Polkka segwayed me into joining a chamber choir and performing countless renditions of pieces in front of large crowds. I am not a Finnish speaker by default, and committed over a year of my life to learning yours and Loituma’s famous Ievan Polkka and I’d like to say I think I sound like a native Finnish speaker-only when singing the piece of course 😅 I still have the notebook in which I wrote and anglicized the Finnish lyrics to help me learn the piece better and I wish this video had existed when I was trying to learn the song as it would have saved me so much work but nonetheless I am really proud of my laborious achievement 😆 Me and my 2 other friends have studied and sung Ievan Polkka in a trio a handful of times and we’re so proud of how it’s come out. Thank you for being such a musical inspiration to the world. I am such a dear fan of yours and Loituma’s work and I am so grateful that I now have the opportunity to extend a personal thank you for having such a monumental impact on my life. Best of luck in all your continued endeavors. -Niko

Its amazing how difficult it is when your mouth isn't used to the shapes and rhythms of the language you're singing in. In your native tongue, it all comes naturally, yet when you try to speak (let alone sing) in another language you have to conciously think about it as you go. Never ceases to amaze me. Thank you for taking the time to put this together.

this is actually a great introduction to Finnish phonetics, not all that difficult as ä, ö, y (ü) and h (ch) all sound like their German counterparts.

Thank you so much for making this guide! I heard the Vocaloid version first, then I got curious about the original, and now I’m obsessed. I wanted to learn how to sing it myself, but just following the lyric videos was incredibly hard since I know zero Finnish. I’m so glad you’ve made this guide. Now I actually have a shot at learning it! :D

Beritstan dillan dellan doo" since that verse is the most popular one... I guess?😂 But, I always ended up getting my tongue twisted😂

Hi Hanni and happy new year !
    Thank you for your tutorials.
As a french guy, it's hard to pronunce words with letters written with quite familiar accent like ö, that is far far form french the language.
For example "tyttöö" in french if we have to prononce what you said, it will be "tuteu" ^^ so it's very hard and confusing, but I like this challenge and try to remember the sentences !
Many many thanks for your time to create and post this video ! Kiitos !
