Fun fact: It was said by other designers at Takara that the hardest part of designing this toy for Takashi Kunihiro, the lead designer of the toy, was trying to make room for the electronics when he was told he needed them after the fact, and that he "looking paralyzed" when he saw that he needed to have Prime and Jetfire combine.
Had it been released recently, they would just put a huge backpack on the back of the robot mode after they've finished designing it, slap a 449.99 price tag and call it a day.

that's not the actual reason (at the very, very end of Revenge of the Fallen when he thanks Sam on that aircraft carrier, and shortly after he removed Jetfire's parts, you can see his chest is back to normal without any sign of abs), with the short answer being: they wanted to sell more toys so, they updated both Prime and Bee's designs in Dark of the Moon. Alternative answer? He uses those abs to store the Matrix of Leadership as shown in DotM
5:33 I'm glad you mentioned that. As someone who had the original 09 leader prime and recently got an APS01U, those chest panels were so helpful in the transformation. I never had problem transforming the 09 figure even when I had them as a kid more than a decade ago, and I was surprised how difficult it is to transform the one without those panels.
The front, back and sides of ROTF leader class Peterbilt 379 Optimus Prime ALMOST looks spot-on movie model-accurate in both robot in truck modes. And as for MPM Peterbilt 379 Optimus Prime, he needs a version 2.0 mold.
I've got the Takara Jetwing Optimus Prime version which has the big wing back pack and double machine guns. He looks amazing. He doesn't have those arm blades to hinder the arm movement which is another plus.
While I never had this toy myself, it's still nostalgic to me because I used to watch absurdlyawesome and he used this toy in "Revenge of the Fallen Fallen".
I remember asking my parents for this so hard back in the day. It was always such a monster to see in toy shelves. I think my parents probably mistook this one for the HFTD Battle Blades Optimus because of how similar they looked and got me that instead. Maybe one day I'll be able to get him.
In 2009 i wanted this one exactly but it was too expensive for my parents. Now, 14 years later, i bought this same one (ra-01) vintage edition for $200. Nothing made me feel so satisfied, ever.

What's amazing to me is that they did a Voyager version of movie Optimus that had, like, 95% of this transformation, scaled-down, plus a Matrix of Leadership that fit in his guts, and the fuel tank guns. Lost the electronics and the chest flex gimmick, and there was never a Jetfire/flight tech option for that one, but it was STILL awesome to get that iconic transformation in a smaller, more accessible price point.
goddamn it man, I am perfectly fine with my MPM , but seeing your video makes me want to go and get one of these to relive my childhood., This was one of my favorite figures growing up and I wish I would've held on to it over the years. It also really says a lot about the design of the figure when it still hold up to this day.

This is the first transformer I ever got... at 3 years old. I could not for the life of me get the red bits on the chest to tab in when going into alt mode, and so I just... never transformed it.
I used to have this guy, except that the swords were replaced with hooks, which I folded up and pretended that they were, in fact, swords. I never had any addons for him, so I opened up those blue back panels, spread them out and pretended that these were wings for his DOTM jetpack. Unfortunately, he kinda broke - snapped in those two thin parts that connected his lower body with his upper body. I miss him...

For me the best deco of this mold was the Buster Optimus Prime from the 2-pack with Leader Jetfire from Takara. It has silver paint, pinstripes on the flames and his gas tanks turn into a gun. Also, I got the 2-pack for about $80 back in 2011. Bonus: The Jetfire it comes with has a great deco as well, without those annoying blue plastics.
I took the head apart numerous times and the light in the neck is engineered to allow a full 360-degree rotation at the neck if it weren't for the truck mode roof sections hindering the range of motion if you have it appropriately collapsed in robot mode.

I have the FWI kit with a Buster Prime, looks so good! Plus I got a KO e-Hobby clear version and attatched the clear version of the FWI kit. Then I bought LT-02 and put it in the IW06 Jet Power Armour kit. That's cool, too.
I had this as a teenager. It was one of the very last Transformers I bought. His backpack broke, though, so it made it hard to transform him properly. I sadly ended up throwing him away.

Got this guy for Christmas today as a Handmedown from my cousin and I love him and my ONLY gripe of the figure is in my copy is the left spring loaded truck thing it would NOT go in the rail system by the speakers but I DIDNT want to do it but i sanded down a VERY tiny amount so it can go in there Glad i did that fix

One time I found one of these in a charity shop. It was a sorry sight to see: Any and all red parts on the torso were gone, One of his energon blades was snapped in two, The part of one of his legs that extends due to transformation was completely gone, and the worst part? HE HAD NO FEET Still bought it tho
Although damaged I was able to buy this guy for 2 dollars, the only bad thing about him was that he was missing one of the panels that covers up the robot mode parts in truck mode

omg! When you see what I saw, you'll never be able to unsee it. So, when you made his chest pop out, pushing the button. THAT whole chest looks just like a Voltron lion's face! OMG it so does!!
Got this guy for Christmas today as a Handmedown from my cousin and I love him and my ONLY gripe of the figure is in my copy is the left spring loaded truck thing it would NOT go in the rail system by the speakers but I DIDNT want to do it but i sanded down a VERY tiny amount so it can go in there Glad i did that fix

I remember having this guy but with the hooks. I still have some pieces that broke off and even his foot for some reason.
If I can have only one movie Optimus Prime figure from the first three movies, this one I want to get and keep. I love the Battle Blades Optimus, but this one is like the ultimate Movie Optimus Prime.

To this day I can transform this toy! I look at real Peter built trucks and can imagine the transformation lol

I used to dream of having thsi figure when I was a kid but never fortunate enough to find it. I was no joke scrolling through fb marketplace today and saw one for sale, picked it up for $40. Child me would be drooling knowing I have him now
I just found this in a box from an old storage. God damn this thing is huge
I remember that my best frie got this Optimus and I bought jetfire man this Optimus was complicated to transform my friend and I were never able to combine them even having two instructions for a 8 year old this was a masterpiece

One time I found one of these in a charity shop. It was a sorry sight to see:
Any and all red parts on the torso were gone,
One of his energon blades was snapped in two,
The part of one of his legs that extends due to transformation was completely gone, and the worst part? HE HAD NO FEET
Still bought it tho
Although damaged I was able to buy this guy for 2 dollars, the only bad thing about him was that he was missing one of the panels that covers up the robot mode parts in truck mode
This figure it's still one of the best Optimus Prime figures ever and my favorite figure
