Fun fact: It was said by other designers at Takara that the hardest part of designing this toy for Takashi Kunihiro, the lead designer of the toy, was trying to make room for the electronics when he was told he needed them after the fact, and that he "looking paralyzed" when he saw that he needed to have Prime and Jetfire combine.
Had it been released recently, they would just put a huge backpack on the back of the robot mode after they've finished designing it, slap a 449.99 price tag and call it a day.

This toy is the stuff of Childhood memories, no toy has topped this single Optimus.

The fact that we got a Masterpeice level transformer at retail for $50 in 2009 still blows my mind.

I got mine for 75 my favorite toy in my collection and plan to add the black apple Optimus prime upgrade head on it

I remember getting leader Optimus and Megatron for Christmas 09, it was one of the highlights of my childhood. It was like a dream come true to have both the biggest hot button figures and be able to have them duke it out.

You learn something new everyday. I just thought they changed Optimus' chest because the autobots were just upgrading themselves. I didn't connect that the chest had changed because it got blown out.
that's not the actual reason (at the very, very end of Revenge of the Fallen when he thanks Sam on that aircraft carrier, and shortly after he removed Jetfire's parts, you can see his chest is back to normal without any sign of abs), with the short answer being: they wanted to sell more toys so, they updated both Prime and Bee's designs in Dark of the Moon. Alternative answer? He uses those abs to store the Matrix of Leadership as shown in DotM

The front, back and sides of ROTF leader class Peterbilt 379 Optimus Prime ALMOST looks spot-on movie model-accurate in both robot in truck modes. And as for MPM Peterbilt 379 Optimus Prime, he needs a version 2.0 mold.
This is THE best Optimus Prime figure, hands down.
I've got the Takara Jetwing Optimus Prime version which has the big wing back pack and double machine guns. He looks amazing. He doesn't have those arm blades to hinder the arm movement which is another plus.
This is one of my holy grails.
Hasbro should rerelease this like they're doing with the G1 figures.
Or rerelease the voyager version.
They did re-release it as the current studio series figure, but they downsized it and simplified its looks and transformation to make it suitable for younger kids (and also cost cutting) 🤦

goddamn it man, I am perfectly fine with my MPM , but seeing your video makes me want to go and get one of these to relive my childhood., This was one of my favorite figures growing up and I wish I would've held on to it over the years. It also really says a lot about the design of the figure when it still hold up to this day.
This mold is 10/10 never to be seen again Hasbro mold. This is the only Prime toy I'll ever want. Too perfect. SS versions cannot compare to this.
5:33 I'm glad you mentioned that. As someone who had the original 09 leader prime and recently got an APS01U, those chest panels were so helpful in the transformation. I never had problem transforming the 09 figure even when I had them as a kid more than a decade ago, and I was surprised how difficult it is to transform the one without those panels.
Radically nostalgic figure and truly ahead of its time. This is a gold mine in Transformers collectible history. Agreed with most of these points. W figure. W character. W video. 🔥❤💙

My dad got this for me when I was little but he returned it because it was to hard for him to transform. I might have to buy one just for the nostalgia. Sucks I missed out on a great figure, but I don’t blame him for it.
While I never had this toy myself, it's still nostalgic to me because I used to watch absurdlyawesome and he used this toy in "Revenge of the Fallen Fallen".

I remember asking my parents for this so hard back in the day. It was always such a monster to see in toy shelves.
I think my parents probably mistook this one for the HFTD Battle Blades Optimus because of how similar they looked and got me that instead.
Maybe one day I'll be able to get him.

I think they stopped the production long ago.
In 2009 i wanted this one exactly but it was too expensive for my parents. Now, 14 years later, i bought this same one (ra-01) vintage edition for $200. Nothing made me feel so satisfied, ever.

I opted to go with the Takara Buster Prime+Jetfire set because of the paint apps, but damn... the ROTF line is probably the best that Hasbro has been in terms of price, quality and engineering.
Found one for $75 usd (cheapest) ordered it and atill waiting on its arrival

ITS BEEN 13 YEARS AND I STILL HAVEN'T HAD ONE OF THESE AT LEAST IN MY HANDS.
I saw this Optimus Prime at Walmart and Toys-R-us as kid and I remember always asking my parents and grandparents if I could get him and I never got it same for the DOTM one too I'm still mad to this very day because I remember drawing this dude, looking at him on shopping manuals, advertising, videos, and transformers websites. I was on the hype train but I never got it and now as an adult I could technically get it but it goes for an even greater price everywhere I look. Dreams shattered...............................................glass ;)
What's amazing to me is that they did a Voyager version of movie Optimus that had, like, 95% of this transformation, scaled-down, plus a Matrix of Leadership that fit in his guts, and the fuel tank guns. Lost the electronics and the chest flex gimmick, and there was never a Jetfire/flight tech option for that one, but it was STILL awesome to get that iconic transformation in a smaller, more accessible price point.
I have a leader Optimus prime with hooks, 6 years in the collection. and just today I found out that the back blue panels on the shin can lift up. This step is missing from the instructions
I remember those days when SEANLONG review these transformers figures with his mid cut joke in between.
Did you know.. There's a clear version of this prime? Yeah it's a stuff of nightmare
Funny cause the reviews for this figure on amazon at the time were abysmal, because it was all reviews written by parents who couldn't transform the thing to save their lives, since their little kids couldn't do it either. Easily one of the most complex transformations from a mainline figure that I can remember. Even being a young man at the time this was released it still took me a long time the first couple of times. I think if they had ditched the arm blades being integrated like they did with later versions it wouldn't have been nearly as frustrating.
I had this toy but I had the one based on the forest fight, with the blacked out chest, damaged headmold and hooks instead of blades. Still was fucking awesome though and I miss it dearly.

This is the first transformer I ever got... at 3 years old. I could not for the life of me get the red bits on the chest to tab in when going into alt mode, and so I just... never transformed it.
I wonder if this one is a better scale with 2007 Studio Series Autobos, Because my SS Ironhide has the same scale as the SS Optimus
My grandpa bought me this from Kmart in 2010, I wish I still had it, god rest his soul. I remember we had such a hard time figuring out how to do the legs for truck mode, back then a leader class was a leader class
There's a place near me that has one of these guys out of box for $80 USD, and I've been wondering if it would be worth it to get as a bit of an alternative to MPM, since I can't seem to ever find any MPM figures in the wild, and this video greatly helps a lot on this

I still have my HFTD version from when I was a kid, it's still one of my favorites in my collection. I remember really struggling to transform him the first time lol
One time I found one of these in a charity shop. It was a sorry sight to see:
Any and all red parts on the torso were gone,
One of his energon blades was snapped in two,
The part of one of his legs that extends due to transformation was completely gone, and the worst part? HE HAD NO FEET

Bro I just went and found my one, he’s now placed back on my display shelf. At the top like he should.
I used to have this guy, except that the swords were replaced with hooks, which I folded up and pretended that they were, in fact, swords. I never had any addons for him, so I opened up those blue back panels, spread them out and pretended that these were wings for his DOTM jetpack.
Unfortunately, he kinda broke - snapped in those two thin parts that connected his lower body with his upper body.
I miss him...
Hands down, this guy will always be THE definitive Bayverse Optimus Prime figure, MPM-4 fails so horribly when compared to it.

Man I had the whole set of revenge of the fallen and dark of the moon transformers. Deluxe class, leader class ect.. my biggest regret in life was selling them all about 5 years ago!! I look back at old tutorial videos about how to transform them and brings bag memories
Same here. Collecting those things as a teenager was tough, I had to keep selling them for gas and rent.

I have the FWI kit with a Buster Prime, looks so good! Plus I got a KO e-Hobby clear version and attatched the clear version of the FWI kit. Then I bought LT-02 and put it in the IW06 Jet Power Armour kit. That's cool, too.

I have the Takara Leader buster prime, but I accidentally broke his main transformation joint. (The hinge for the trailer hitch)
I took the head apart numerous times and the light in the neck is engineered to allow a full 360-degree rotation at the neck if it weren't for the truck mode roof sections hindering the range of motion if you have it appropriately collapsed in robot mode.

MPM-4 in my opinion is just a far superior version of this figure.

Got this in 2010 and it’s always been my favourite toy of all time. So much so I own 3 and one of them is mint in box
For me the best deco of this mold was the Buster Optimus Prime from the 2-pack with Leader Jetfire from Takara. It has silver paint, pinstripes on the flames and his gas tanks turn into a gun. Also, I got the 2-pack for about $80 back in 2011. Bonus: The Jetfire it comes with has a great deco as well, without those annoying blue plastics.
I just want to say, I decided to rewatch revenge of the fallen with my dad since I haven’t seen it in a long time and um, it actually is a terrible movie. I was expecting to at least not hate it as much as the hater’s do but no, it really does deserves all the hate it gets. Just uninteresting/boring exposition, so much stupid and immature jokes written by a 14 year old, plot and story that feels so rushed and empty and messy that I was immediately uninvested. Now the action, the main thing that the creators are focus on, meh. Now the CGI and effects still hold but without a plot to get in invested in, without any characters to like, without any some kind of emotional weight. The fights just feels like it exist In some kind of vacuum and I personally can’t enjoy the action scenes like that. Now people have said that they can’t tell what’s going on at all in the fights but I’m able to tell what character is what and what’s going on (for the most part) but the decision especially for the Deceptions, are so overly detailed and so messy looking, my eyes just glaze over it, if that makes sense. Way Before then I used to think the transformers movie were really good (the first movie from 2007 is pretty solid though) and they didn’t deserve the hate but since I’ve grown up a lot and seen a lot of actually amazing stories (like the gundam franchise) I can now see why a lot of people hate the Bay movies. It really is a shame for the transformers franchises because there are great ideas and if written well, it would’ve made the transformer franchise not just some toy commercial to sell toys. In short, revenge of the fallen is a 1/10 movie.
The funniest thing is that in the German version of this toy , he doesn’t say the full English line ( I am Optimus prime) he just screams (Optimus prime !) 😭🤣
Them ball jointed ankles alone are better than the dumb design decision of whatever the hell those things are on MPM4 that can break easily if you're not careful. (And the KOs, like LT02, have it worse with those things!)
We got off easy with the electronics: apparently, the European release *only* says "Optimus Prime". 😮😳🤨🧐 And a funny thing: Takara pulled a Hasbro with DotM Jetwing Optimus Prime...they really thought that extra plastic, which ain't that much, warranted bumping it up to Supreme class!! I wonder if they did that nonsense with their DotM Striker Optimus Prime? 😏😏😏
I just got one of the 2009 battle damaged version yesterday for 80$.
It was a bid too and I always have bad luck with bids, yet somehow, I won the bid.
I loved this Prime. Probably my 3rd favorite, right behind Cybertron Prime in 2nd and 2001 RID Prime as the king
ROTFL leader class Optimus is extremely overrated. The 2007 leader class deserves more love.

I managed to pick up the Takara Buster version with the Chrome bits. The frustrating bits are the Chrome on the bottom of his feet (guess he’ll be standing on felt) and he doesn’t have a face plate so I have to look at his mouth!
Awesome figure man, I got this one and customized it with articulated hands with the spikes on the knuckles, gas tanks that transform into his weapon and Toy hax labels also got the DOTM version, got the two fans want it add on kits (jet fire & power up jet ) and the trailer that transforms into his armory.
I have him with 2007 version so I have 2 Bayverse Peterbilt Leader class figures optimus Prime with other Bayverse leaders

I absolutely need this guy. I've only ever had two movie transformers, Stealth Bumblebee from 2008 and Battle Blade Starscream. Bumblebee unfortunately met his end at the hands of my cousins, who were possibly too young to understand that you must be gentle with toys. He ended up like Jazz in the first movie, ripped right at the joint at his waist.
I wonder which would be better though. This guy or the Premium Finish SS-05 Optimus? Seems like the SS-05 one might be a suitable replacement if you can't find this.
I had this as a teenager. It was one of the very last Transformers I bought. His backpack broke, though, so it made it hard to transform him properly. I sadly ended up throwing him away.
When I got this figure a long time ago, he was missing one of his feet. I threw him away a year or so ago, and now I’m wishing I didnt and that I looked for a replacement foot. 😔
I used to dream of having thsi figure when I was a kid but never fortunate enough to find it. I was no joke scrolling through fb marketplace today and saw one for sale, picked it up for $40. Child me would be drooling knowing I have him now

I remember having this very toy as a kid, but little kid plus carelessness equals cut in 2, or as a punishment for something i did(I don't remember) my mom threw out my entire collection (old 2007, 2009 collection, definitely can get better improved version today)
If I can have only one movie Optimus Prime figure from the first three movies, this one I want to get and keep. I love the Battle Blades Optimus, but this one is like the ultimate Movie Optimus Prime.
Although damaged I was able to buy this guy for 2 dollars, the only bad thing about him was that he was missing one of the panels that covers up the robot mode parts in truck mode

Got this guy for Christmas today as a Handmedown from my cousin and I love him and my ONLY gripe of the figure is in my copy is the left spring loaded truck thing it would NOT go in the rail system by the speakers but I DIDNT want to do it but i sanded down a VERY tiny amount so it can go in there Glad i did that fix
this is one is great, but i honestly have more nostalgia for the 2007 leader optimus, even if it isn't as good

I have a slightly busted battle damaged deco with the energon hooks that combines with a slightly busted regular Jetfire, that I got alongside a slightly more busted leader class Megatron with the wrong color alien attack arm upgrade pre-installed. I think that's the first time, and only time so far, that I've gotten buyer's remorse from something I didn't even spend my own money on.
Then the next time we were at that same event, the guy in the booth next to us had a optimus jetfire combination in really good condition for like 20 bucks, and my dad wanted me to get it so we could sell the one that I didn't prefer, but it was really early and I was a bit slow and frustrated mentally, so I passed on it until I had collected myself, I went back an hour later just to find that the booth owner tripled the price after someone (me) had shown interest in it, which according to my dad is really shitty business practice/manners for anyone running/attending a pop-up shop like a flea market or garage sale
