I saw Transformers: The Movie in theaters, and loved it! Yes, I cried when Prime died. It was sad. But I loved when Rodimus was born. That was a great scene when he was running down the hallway, stops, and orders everyone to transform and roll out! Dark Awakening has always been my favorite episode of season 3, and one of the best episodes of all time. "Monsters. They made me a weapon, to destroy the very ones I loved in life. But you will save them, Rodimus Prime." "No Autobot could survive that!"
Unfortunately, the one who said that phrase was the first to fall from his wounds, in the 1986 movie; the other who stood fell later, in pain and disgrace
@@basedpota And there in lies the problem with the movies, it's told through the humans, not the robots. It should have just been called "Humans: Oh, There Are Robots Too". I also got sick of how every single plot of every movie was "Earth is always in the Transformers history". Why can't it be just Tranformer's history? Why does Earth have to be the center of the universe? Also, humping dogs and robot scrotums were a thing too... fuck Micheal Bay.
Don't forget that one of the abilities of the Transformers is that when they are in their alternate modes, they are able to start repairs on their bodies, thanks to their internal systems. If the Matrix of Leadership did "awaken" Prime as you suggest, not only would this give his body time to heal, it would also explain glitches in the continuity from episode to episode. It would work like our immune system.
This is a novel idea, but his body looks completely undamaged when the human scientists retrieve him. It doesn't seem like there was even enough time to perform the most basic self-repairs before the ship exploded. Nawe, this is just an example of changing the ending story so that Prime could return once again. Fans didn't connect with Rodimus like they did Optimus, and so a decision at the top was made for a retconn. The idea of a different animation studio taking over for the next series of episodes makes perfect sense for the changes in his condition. Who knows, maybe that staff didn't even pay attention to the ending of Dark Awakening.
@@dark_nightwing_xl2797 That is a contradiction: How can he be revived if he wasn't dead? He WAS dead until this idea was retconned. Did you watch this video, Dark Awakening, or The Return of Optimus Prime? Without watching all those, you won't have a grasp of what is being talked about here.

Optimus Prime dark awakening left a scar to my heart and I'm greatly horrified that they turned him into a robotic zombie. I would never forget the graphic scene of Optimus Prime battered face while controlling the spaceship to his suicidal death.
It's about time that the animated movie was remade with the remaining voice actors returning (and others replacing if they voiced a character in some media in the later years - example Starscream), redone cel animation, remastered music and finally animating the missing storyboard sections to give use the full experience as a "transformed" edition for cinema. With maybe a double showing with the original film coming on first. It would sell gangbusters.
Peter Cullen has one of the best voices in Hollywood having somebody else doing optimus prime is a sacrilege can you imagine darth vader with a different voice i can't. I was depressed for months after the movie, I adored Optimus and I was a girl. I was just devestated. I am so glad he came back for the US audience for good, although I understood that there was more made for the Japanese audience where he would shortly die again. I use the US version as the final last episode of Transformers where Optimus takes his rightful place in command again driving his Autobots off into the sunset.
Well the Rebirth still exists and Optimus was present for that with Headmasters and Targetmasters. Also, if you count Season 5's puppet's stories, He became a Powermaster at some point.
Zan Jayna not in American continuity. The reason why the Japanese had make PM Prime a different character is because they killed Prime AGAIN in the 3rd episode of Headmasters and Masterforce was meant to be a soft reboot.
Ahhh so the other death in G2 during the fight with Galvatron... Hasbro only released it to the Japanese market/Audience??? There is a video titled 'Optimus 3rd death' on youtube and is dubbed in Japanese... so that would be why???
And then the Beast Era hit and no one has any idea where the hell he went. Some sources say he was last seen in deep stasis, others that he died, more still that he's in a quasi-reality of pure madness, and a final one stating he's a space explorer. The amount of splinter timelines don't make things easier.
I had the hate plague on copied VHS from the TV back when I was fumbling with tape cassettes and spectrum computer systems. Long time ago but I'll never forget it and the soundtracks stay with you forever!
Parts of the script explain that they actually find him in his devastated state. Scenes describe them rebuilding his body, though they obviously can't revive him. As these sections were probably cut for time, somehow they apparently decided the path of least resistance was to show his complete body at the beginning of the two-parter and let that be that. I don't see why they couldn't have had a brief montage of 15-20 seconds of the physical repairs, but there you have it.
When Optimus died it hit me like a ton of bricks. He was an incredibly strong character with Peter Cullen's voice that transcended normal Saturday morning cartoons.
I remember when me and my friends went to see this in the movie theater. When we got up to the box office we tried the whisper that we wanted tickets for the Transformers movie because of our age we were in our late teens and early 20s cuz back then it wasn't common for adults to go see a cartoon without any kids and it was the first time I heard the word "damn" in a cartoon. Or any curse words for that matter.
"Jarring" is a great way to describe the animation error. Love the idea of Matrix reviving him and then he goes into stasis lock. Adding to that, in my mind, Prime's ship wasn't completely destroyed by the Quintesson detonator, his ship had a repair system on it (similar to the Ark in the pilot of the G1 cartoon), and that's the system that repaired him before Jessica and Gregory found him. The stars going nova was a completely different explosion than the Quintesson detonator.
This movie changed my life, the most moving ever lasting movie of all time. I cried and became a man the day I saw optimus prime die. His spirit is forever!!!
Man, zombie prime it's the most terrifying thing i've ever seen, imagine knowing that who once was your leader now is a braindead killing machine that could appear right in front of you at any moment just to end you
I think your idea about the matrix reviving his mind was a good idea. Earlier, I thought of Perceptor installing shield in the ship which was not activated successfully until shortly before the ship crashed into the detinator. The shield would have protect the ship and Prime from further damage. After that the ship's automatic repair system tried to repair everything and even put Prime's arm back on and made his outer area look good as new. However, it was unable to properly work on his inner system, which required careful work. In doing all that the ship used up much of its' energy and was unable to do anything else on it's own.
What a wonderful break down and truly remarkable theory craft. Also, the scene where Optimus Prime dies gets me emotional 'til this very day. The music and directing of that scene sticks with me still.
I was one of the crying kids! I was 9!!!! I lived for that show and Optimus was my hero!!! I still get tears when I watch the movie at 43. Loved the g one series still. Your theory makes total sense my friend!! I really like you content and I am a harsh critic.
You know the moment you mentioned in the video about how Prime's spark transferred back into his body while he had the matrix, I was like. Yeah and then he went into stasis lock I was like. "Okay, yeah that actually makes sense and I can believe." So kudos on a thought-out if in the end a fairly simple solution to a continuity error.
Wow once again you have out done your self giving a good reason for a question thats tuff to think about without the acurance of animation errors. Amazing as always.
Optimus probably did a Stasis lock, as you said. But in some cases, as proven in newer continuities, and comics, some forms of Stasis lock were shown to “repair” the injured bot. My guess? He drew raw materials to himself, before entering stasis. The materials interacted with his remaining spark energy, and thus repaired the exterior. Just a thought. Edit: Thanks for the like, Rodimus!
It’s nice that Peter Cullen took advice from his brother , Larry Cullen , when Peter Cullen was getting ready to voice Optimus Prime. Then Lorenzo Di Bonaventura had to ruin Optimus Prime’s character.
Optimus prime was the best ever I remember watching him as a kid. Every body loved prime he was Nobel selfless brave .long live the original optimus prime .
I recently rewatched the movie after having not seen it in probably 10-ish years. Honestly seeing him die hurt more now than it did seeing it for the first time 20 years ago.
I remember being happy when Optimus Prime returned in Dark Awakening. But the joy was short lived when prime turned on his fellow troops. A very disturbing episode.
Wow Rodimus! You really rock! I had no idea about many of the things you have discussed. Once again, I am pleasantly enlightened by your work. Great Job!!!

The death of Optimus and its subsequent reaction caused the studio to change the ending of G.I. Joe: Duke's alive! Meanwhile, I don't think kids had the same emotional investment in Duke Hauser as they had in Optimus Prime.
Not only that, but the box-office failure of both *Transformers* and *My Little Pony* convinced Hasbro/Marvel/Sunbow to air *GI Joe the Movie* on television instead of the big screen.
While I'm more of a Rodimus Prime fan, the movie has Optimus say 'Do not grieve, for soon I will be one with the Matrix.' So I'll say that your theory is solid. Also, Zombie Optimus I thought was both terrifying and awesome.
@@aaronryherd6607 Same here. I remember hearing stories of kids hiding in closets after the movie and the "Zombotimus" episodes. I also remember hearing that some kids wanted to take Hasbro to court for the murder of Optimus Prime.
1986. pivotal year in my life. I remember the death of prime very well. Shocking to say the least to see one of your most favorite characters from your childhood die, not to mention the rest of the original G1 line. Something never seen before in those times. Same could be said about the couple of profane words used in the movie as well..which was also never done before with a popular kids show.. That was why it was quickly pulled from the theaters after been shown only for a short time.. "Dark Awakening " was almost just as cold to see him die once again along with the destruction of the rest of the autobots in that mausoleum..forever removing any hope that they could ever be brought back.. . When they finally brought Prime back in "Return of Optimus Prime part 1 and 2", by then something seemed different and he wasn't the same..But out of it all, I never could understand how they could be perminately killed like that when in the first episode, they were all killed when the autobot "ark" crashed into that volcano and they lay dormant for millions of years until teletran 1 was able to bring them back to life somehow..Nevermind how Optimus was first killed by Megatron when he was just a warehouse dockworker named Orion Packs and brought back to life by Alpha Trion. Its rather disappointing to learn, after all these years, the real reasons they were killed was just so they could discontinue a group of ,then still quite popular, toy line characters just to make room for new batch of characters/ toys. And truth be told, the newer transformer toys really wern't all that great compared to the original first line from 84. Same goes for many other toys at the time as well..The more new characters introduced , for profit reasons, the dumber and more stupid the whole line along with the stories got..until kids just got weary with it and moved on. masters of the universe, GI Joe for example..The later newer cheaper looking characters just could never hold up to the quality and originality original first line. I suspect they knew this which is why you couldn't find any G1 characters after a time. But it was already too late when they ressurected prime back into the series. damage was done already.
My 5 year old daughter loves transformers and especially Prime, just as I did when I was growing up. So much so I tracked down a g1 in box prime for us to share. We have watched every episode on dvd over a number of months up to the movie. She was hyped to see it and I was hyped to watch it with her. We started watching it. We got to the part where he dies. My daughter turns to me after the scene has finished. With tears rolling down her face she says. "Dad, I don't want to watch this anymore". I stop the movie. I ask if she's ok. She's sobbing and lunges at me for a cuddle. I cuddle her. I cry. We cuddle and cry with each other. Her heart is broken and mine aches for her loss. I'm 41 years old. It makes me happy to share something I love from my childhood with my daughter.
Nerding out on this. I think there were a couple of months that passed between “Dark Awakening” and when he was used as bait. There’s even a small montage that shows the scientists working on Optimus and messing around with the spores. As for his seemingly good condition on the ship I think the ships computer restored his body prior to super nova. Anyway great video.
I've wondered the same thing about the Return of Optimus Prime. During his kamikaze run at the end of Dark Awakening, we see the ship and Optimus at the helm taking flak from the Quintesson base before colliding with it in a humongous explosion. No other ship has a chance to intervene and there are presumably no survivors. In the first part of the Return, we see the human exploration vessel encounter an intact ship that wasn't on a collision course with an asteroid or whatever and wasn't under enemy fire and with an intact Optimus Prime at the helm. They rescue him before the star goes nova destroying the ship. Animation errors notwithstanding, how to reconcile the discontinuity? Suspension of disbelief, like with Optimus's (magically disappearing) trailer or other logical inconsistencies, has been as much a mainstay of what is basically a glorified toy commercial since its inception.
I hate how they are trying to make Bumblebee the new central character of the franchise. I would be okay with Hot Rod because he's worthy of the Matrix, Magnus too, he's awesome but not quite a supreme commander yet. Even Primal (Beast Wars) and Smokescreen (in the aligned continuity) for similar reasons. But Bee? He's just popular, not Prime material.
Thank you for sharing this retrospect. Here in the Philippines, at least in my available resources, I was clueless what happened to the characters in Seasons 1 and 2 when Season 3 began airing on a local station in 1992. Having no choice, I just watch along and tried to pick up the pieces as years went on. Rodimus Prime is a good leader, but not as good and examplary as Optimus. The character stood the test of time, new generation of fans, and multitude of franchise reincarnations. Sustained interest pays off. It took me 14 years from initial release to finally watch "Transformers The Movie."
I remember the series was on ch 9 at 4PM rite before gi joe at 430pm after school hours optimus prime he's my favourite transferformer the leader a the autobots against the evil decepticons good memories in the 80s my favourite cartoon a all tyme.

I was actually hoping for an episode in which those five-faced freaks piss off Galvatron to the point where he goes absolutely insane with rage and obliterates them.

“ one shall stand one shall fall” the famous line that is said for every one on one battle between optumis prime and megaton
Unfortunately, the one who said that phrase was the first to fall from his wounds, in the 1986 movie; the other who stood fell later, in pain and disgrace
The animated movie will always be better than the live-action...

I thought I knew everything about 'formers.

Which is why bringing back Optimus was doubly stupid, totally undermining the dramatic impact of the movie.
They keep doing these transformer movies. And no one seems to be grasping the concept... make the cartoon movie into a real movie.

Powermaster Prime was actually a guy named Ginrai
Long time ago but I'll never forget it and the soundtracks stay with you forever!
i was a little older when the movie was in theaters, but i still get chocked up when he dies.
It's certainly a sad moment. I've seen the movie so many times and I still get excited when Hot Rod takes the Matrix from Galvatron!
Nice theory.🤔
Optimus dying is about as predictable as a Christmas commercial in November
Now yes. Back in 1986 it was a shock.

How was optimus able to be revived? THE POWER OF COMMERCE COMPELS YOU! THE POWER OF COMMERCE COMPELS YOU!!!
Hasbro's response to parents complaining about their child being traumatized by Prime's death in the movie "Well now, let's get this kid into therapy"

Optimus prime is a icon no matter the cost .

1986. pivotal year in my life.
M McCain Amen! All true

Thanks! I agree, though I think his outer body could not be activated by the humans.
@@RodimusPrimal this actually holds up because in the first episode when they crashed to Earth they got repaired
In reconcile it like this, the G1 cartoon is canon regarding how they look and sound, the comic is canon for the lore and story. 😊
I agree. Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of Bumblebee rising up, but not as leader. I wish they'd bring Rodimus into more animated appearances.
What if the new writers see bumblebee as the new hot rod? They might bring in "bumbleness prime" at some point.
