  • A Modified Subaru BRZ with a Turbo is the best way to start your Wednesday 😀 So I got to drive this wonderful and turbocharged Subaru BRZ that looks killer, makes all the right noises, and is super easy to chuck around the local backroads! With the low center of gravity from the boxer 4 engine and a well-balanced front engine, rear wheel drive platform, a boosted engine is exactly what the BRZ / GT86 / FRS needed. Enjoy.

      Roads Untraveled I've been thinking about adding a turbo to my car, but I don't know what to change other than just turbo. I'm in California so headers can't change. should I get a turbo from another car or buy one of those overpriced kits. I just need help because forums don't help and I don't know how much reliability would change.

      The owner of the BRZ can easily hit 400whp by upgrading his injectors/ fuel pump and e85 ...thats the 20g setup.. and the stock fa20 is known to handle that much power with a good tune.

    I totally agreed with Subaru for not putting a turbo/supercharger out of the box. Here is the thing, people keep saying that this is an “enthusiast” car. Most of the people don’t understand what that means. To explain it in simple words, this car is made so you could enjoy the car out of the box. It is put together perfectly in my opinion. You don’t have to be a really good driver to drive it to it’s limit to enjoy it. You can easily drift/powerslide without the need to be at high speed. This is exactly like the Mazda MX-5/Miata. It is made for you to enjoy the car, without throwing so much money, work, and time on it. Good gearbox, good engine, good tuning, good suspension, good handling, and good front engine RW drive setting out of the box. That is what “enthusiast” car means. You enjoy the car for what it is without any mods or upgrades on it. And after you have thoroughly enjoyed the stock car, somewhere down the line you can alway mod it for more power if you want to. A lot of the kids these days don’t understand this. They are born in a time where everything must be in a “my stuff is better then yours” situation. “My car got 1000HP”, “My car can do 0-60 in 0.125sec”, “My car can fly”, “My car is $1,000,000 more expensive then yours”. And afterwards proceed to drive it at 20-30mph all day long. Even in a track you can’t really drive the supercars nowadays at its limit. If you are not pushing close to the limit and beyond in your car, you are not thoroughly enjoying it. With the BRZ/GT86, you can and you can do it more often and more safely.

    As per your skyline comment, I agree that it's a better performer out of the box, but as a daily driver I would take the brz, even sans turbo kit.
    Right hand drive, questionable ownership history, insurance headaches and dealing with overseas parts for minor repairs and maintenance are a lot of headaches to deal with on a DD.

    • @RoadsUntraveled
      @RoadsUntraveled  7 лет назад +2

      Agreed, without a doubt an R34 has its downsides as a daily, but around Vancouver there is really no shortage of RB parts and shops who carry various JDM parts. Insurance is the same as any other vehicle on the Skyline, just slightly more expensive.

    • @Highfiveletsride

      Roads Untraveled that may be the case in British Columbia but in provinces with privatized insurance most insurance companies won't even touch rhd cars or highly inflated as you will have to find insurance through a broker. Some provinces you can't even register a newly imported car (Quebec). So in my opinion owning rhd is more of a hassle than anything else

If you are going to spend all that money on turbo-charging, I just don't get why you would cheap out on the most important performance part on the car.

      +Jonathan Ting Trust me, Firestone don't make any great tyres - they are fine for commuting or if you really can't afford anything else, better than really poor stuff like Linglangs or Achilles etc, and that's about it. If you want a good all weather performance road tyre that can do light track work at a good price, Bridgestone RE003's are OK though lacking a little in the wet & start to lose adhesion when they get very hot, if you have a bit more money, go for a Michelin Pilot Sport 4, which are astoundingly good wet or dry, cold or hot & IMO the best price/performance you can get currently, at least of everything I've tried - if you just want the very best, Pirelli P-Zero or Michelin Pilot Super Sports though you can only get them in 19" and up and they are pretty horrifically expensive. There is a night and day difference between a budget tyre like a Firehawk I500 and any of the above, it'll totally transform the car.

Those need to change if you are hitting 350bhp or close to 400bhp. 280bhp with boost is like more than enough for a car this light.

    This can be called the BRZ STi if the engine spec is similar to the WRX STi. The stock final drive could be a tad shorter to reduce the 4000rpm torque dip. A good ECU reflash and better fuel delivery is needed. The stock fuel pump can be chirpy.

    id have to say, when this car came out or rather before it even came out i wanted it soo bad, all my friends were hating on it though, i ended up buying an S2k instead. i loved it and ive always loved honda's engineering from bikes to cars but til this day i wish i wouldve got the GT86, the s2k was a very snappy wheelbase, which although its fun as hell its super scary doing some higher speed drifts. i love the styling so much of these 3 cars and eventually when the price drops enough ill pick one up. just a shell would be perfect. 1JZ swap for sure. id do a canyon carver/drift build... just my 2 cents on this car, ive always loved it but never had the chance to experience it yet... all of the factors that went into making it make it such a great car to hit surns and slide around, an STI rally awd version of the brz would be sweet, and some sort of better TRD GT86 would be cool too, then the FRS should do a street package, i think it would attract a lot of buyers if they took all 3 which are virtually the same and offered out of the box race packages!

  • @fpj486

    The reason they never made it a turbo from the beginning was because this was supposed to be a comeback future version of the AE86. Hence, the FR layout: light, stomp on the gas hard and have it slide out on. In a sense it was to mimic the AE86. Also they wanted it to go the AE86 route for longevity, people could tune and add performance parts of their own liking. Having a turbo from the start would have made it pretty boring comparatively then that of a NA in which you can add induction rather than it coming straight out of the box. BRZ/FRS/GT86 was meant for those to customarily build rather than just buy with performance. The 86 back in the day came with only like 140 hp but you see people with AE86s' of all styles. That the route they went with this. Probably why you'll never see a turbo GT86.

    Very cool car, exactly what it should have been from factory. I purchased a used Cayman S (with 2 years warranty) but had looked at the BRZ. If this was an option from a dealer I would have likely went this route.

    Review a well put together SRT-4 if you can. Most people hate them, some people love them. They're definitely a one trick pony but they are good at that one trick, and sound great while doing it.

    There was a review for a supercharged or turbo charged brz vs a stock na s2000. People chose the stock na s2000 because it has enough power and reliability where as turbo/supercharged brz had the power but tons of issues to maintain that power. I think a subaru wrx turbo would be just as fun as a turbo brz imo.

  • @smileydude12
    @smileydude12 7 лет назад

    Never understood why they won't just release a turbo BRZ. With how well the relatively slow N/A one sold and still sells, one with a turbo would sell like mad.

  • @michaelbullington3182

    Kano WIns said why no BRZ turbo? My guess is that was part of the deal between Toyota and Subaru. Similarly, Subaru could up the sales on the Impreza/XV (and other Subies) by switching out the 150ish horsepower motor for the BRZ's 200 horsepower. It's sorely needed as the current safety-driven models keep getting heavier and slower than previous generations.

    What boost was being made? Looked through all comments, but didn't see it...i wouldn't think much boost is needed, 8-10psi at most to keep it livable...and yes, I would put a rear muffler back on the car...otherwise nicely done

    Surely the owner installed some pistons to lower the compression ratio to 10:1, sleaved the block or did something beyond just installing a turbo kit and calling it a day? Blowing 4UGSE blocks when trying to boost stock internals seems to have become a theme for the Toyota 86, albeit I haven't tried boosting one myself, and lowering the CR to 10:1 from 12.5:1 would help a lot.

  • @jasonyoung6420
    @jasonyoung6420 7 лет назад

    why would you swap in an antiquated EJ that would require a ton a custom fab, not to mention a complete wiring harness & ECU into a BRZ? your better bet would be to build the FA's internals to handle more boost. I'm always on the more displacement bandwagon, but half a liter at the cost of 10years of RD is not a fair trade

    The Skyline GT-T is quite a porker though, nowhere as graceful around the corners as the BRZ. It's much easier to put more power to a light car, than make a heavy one handle better.

    Why doesn't Subaru add a turbo from the factory? I understand that they want to make it a commuter car and a "sports car" but I think they should sell it for less than what they currently are especially if they don't have it turbo charged. It has decent specs but there isn't much to offer to say it's a sports car unlike a Nissan 370Z which is a sports car and has the power, feel and actual all around build to show for it. Sure it doesn't have the back seat but you have a sports car who needs the back seats? I'm a little disappointed by the brz and frs. You can purchase a 370Z for the same price no joke I just looked it up.
