    Ever wonder if there was a much less expensive substitute for an HKS turbocharged Subaru BRZ?! Like half the price?! Well there is, it's the second generation (SW20) Toyota MR2 Turbo. This particular example is a 1994 GT-S, imported from Japan to Vancouver, BC and driven 2000km down to California for this comparison! With both cars making the same amount of power at the rear wheels, both weighing in at around 2,800 lbs, and both powered by 2.0L engines, it seemed like an obvious comparison to make. Retro vs. modern! ENJOY.

    I never heard of a boosted 86 with a torque dip, are you sure? Torque dip gets eliminated just with a tune (e85) and headers.

    • @mr.wiggles7535
      @mr.wiggles7535 5 лет назад +2

      Honestly, it's probably to save the rods on the FA20 if it's not built. That or poor tuning.

    • @nunyabusiness896
      @nunyabusiness896 5 лет назад +10

      People are so programmed to think there's a torque dip I honestly think they just assume it's somewhere due to the power of suggestion. If you look at other dyno graphs for cars the 86 is incredibly linear by comparison. Some Ferrari dynos look like an EKG from someone having a heart attack. I just have an exhaust and panel filter on my FR-S and I have to google a dyno graph to remember where the torque dip is supposed to be, it's greatly exaggerated by people trying to sell headers and tunes to people.

    • @Ryan-ue9ve
      @Ryan-ue9ve 5 лет назад +1

      @@nunyabusiness896 i thought the same thing when i first got my car but after a while youll notice it. It kinda feels like power kicking in at around 4k, like a sudden increase in torque. I felt it in the stock tune but realized how bad it was after experiencing the 93 tune then it was gone on e85 tune. Once you tune it, youll see.

    • @nunyabusiness896
      @nunyabusiness896 5 лет назад +4

      @@Ryan-ue9ve Lots of N/A variable valve timing cars (or race tuned non-variable valve timing) have a power jump towards the upper part of the revv range. If you want to talk torque dip, try the first 2/3 of an S2000's tach. I've had my car since 2013, it's hardly new to me, but I still don't agree it's a substantial dip or noticeable unless you're actively trying to notice it. I think this is more to do with people coming from broad powerband V6's, family tuned I4's with flat powerbands, or mild turbo cars that also kick in low in the revv range. Drive any old Honda or other N/A car with a sport-minded engine and there is always less power low down, period.

    • @Ryan-ue9ve
      @Ryan-ue9ve 5 лет назад +1

      @@nunyabusiness896 oh haha sorry. Well i dont know what to tell you, i could definitely feel it. I wouldnt nessesarily say i felt the dip but the increase in torque at around 4k rpms that made it noticable. Have you driven a e85 86 before? Its not just the increase in power but the delivery. Like in my car i can be at 3k rpms and it feels like im accelerating but before it was like i had to wait until the rpms went above 4k until i felt anything.

    I like your unbiased commentary on the MR2, but I do think it's important to note that in cases like the mud this is not really indicative of it's true handling characteristics. A front engine layout will be more mild and predicable out on a road like that, but on a racetrack those factors aren't usually relevant and mid-engine is usually preferable. Thanks for a great vid! • @Jmurcia91
    @Jmurcia91 5 лет назад +17

    You are comparing an early 90s Toyota to a newer BRZ. HKS turbo on the BRZ which will most likely spoil quicker than the CT20b turbo the MR2 has obviously. The BRZ has Brembos which the MR2 doesn’t. Suspension can be rectified with a quality coilover setup on the MR2 as well. The MR2 is a better car if it’s updated to today’s specs.

    • @adruuun

      It's not even a fair comparison the mr2 is stock and that BRZ has way more mods and it's boosted haha

    • @nunyabusiness896
      @nunyabusiness896 5 лет назад

      MR2 is still going to have a much higher CG and dated suspension geometry. The GT86 is one of the best handling cars ever made, there really isn't much out there at all that can top the handling. I've driven a Ferrari 458, Skyline R34 GTR, Evo VI, 350z, WRX and WRX STI, modded NC Miata, BMW 228i, infiniti G35, 02 Sentra SE-R Spec V, etc. and none of those handle as well as my FR-S. The low CG and light weight is just impossibly good, there's nothing out there that is as confidence inspiring in a corner. For only 200hp it regularly embarrasses cars with close to double the horsepower on circuit tracks and autocrosses with just a tire upgrade.

    I wonder how the MR2 would behave with the Garrett G25-550 or 660...earlier spool and still higher power? As for the BRZ, I'd take a look at the overlap of the cams. NA cars benefit from extraction and better filling when the exhaust flow is helping to suck in the intake charge , especially at higher rpm. On a turbo motor, you end up blowing boost out the exhaust with too much overlap.

  • @switchlanez
    @switchlanez 5 лет назад +2

    One reason you'd want electric power steering is it doesn't draw power from the engine unlike hydraulic power steering but the latter can give better road feedback. But the BRZ's steering feels tighter with better driving feel technically. I've had both and a BRZ and a '95 MkII MR2 Turbo. MR2 feels more special which I can't do justice attempting to explain--you'd have to drive one.

    If the frs is sitting on coil overs and wider tires etc and the mr2 is fairly stop I mean you can’t compare those cars at all.
    The CT20B is still smaller than what’s on the frs/brz it’s going to have more top end and throttle response since it’s a newer turbo and tuned.

    Drove an MR2 Sw20 daily for 12 years and no disrespect to the commentator of this video but you do a lot of unnecessary shifting. I know the MR2 usually does demand more shifting than most manuals but you shift up, only to immediately down shift before you can even be in the gear for 2 sec (literally) and then immedialey shift up again. You can easily stick in 3rd fir the majority of what you're doing in the mountain pass while controling the turbo spooling.
    Just ride the gear or trail off the throttle as needed, (the MR2 will very much take it) and your clutch, shifter linkage, transmission, and fuel tank will thank you.

    'Why do you want electric power steering over hydraulic?' The MR2 has electric power steering which only operates at low speed the only other option the MR2 had was no power steering on some models of the rev 1's.

    • @RoadsUntraveled
      @RoadsUntraveled  Год назад +1

      The SW20 has an electric pump that powers a hydraulic steering system. (because a standard belt-driven pump at the engine would require a LOT more hydraulic lines all the way to the front of the vehicle.

      @shortbuslife3440 Год назад

      @@RoadsUntraveled yep so not true hydraulic and it switches off above 30mph, I also had 2 mr2's here in UK one was rev1 no power steering with 3sfe engine simply known as MR2 coupe and much more focused or quicker steering the one I really miss, the other was a rev2 GT from Japan weirdly the GT from Japan is the top spec with leather and alcantara seats and trimming the GTS is one below otherwise no other difference with them I think and the GTS is slightly lighter but barely. Either way I miss them both especially the coupe weirdly.

    Enjoyed the video, yet disagree with your last comments. Owned both cars, the MR2 and BRZ/86 are not similar in the slightest! To state the obvious, one has the engine in the front snd the other one over the rear axel. As you stated also, one has traction control, the other has not. One is more tail happy than the other, that being the MR2. The MR2 is a different animal altogether than the BRZ/86. I prefer the new car, more refinement and safer!
