  • Many of us have our own favorite soup recipes we make at home, but what if we could safely can them to include in our food storage? The USDA has provided guidelines for doing just that, which provides lots of variability. Join us to learn what the guidelines are as we make our own recipe of Black Bean Soup.

My mother had a neighbor that canned homemade vegetable soup. She used cooked hamburger meat in it. She also had a huge family and cooked it outside in a washtub over a firepit. She put washcloths between each jar, and kept the water boiling over the jars with towels. Every once in a while she'd have to add more boiling water to the tub. My mom didn't trust to do this but nobody in that family ever died from eating her soups. She also did her corn and green beans this way. Nobody had a pressure cooker or canner back in those days. Do you have any idea how long she would have to boil those jars to make it safe to eat? I'd like to learn how to do it safely. I'm 65 now and nobody's around anymore to explain things to the young people. I helped my mom can tomatoes and tomato juice. That was easy. I was about 12 then. If anyone has ever canned by outside tub method please let me know how to do it. Thank you! 🤗

I inherited my mother's AND my grandmother's recipe boxes, containing a plethora of recipes handed down from my great grandmother and great aunts. I still haven’t the courage to eat anything I’ve canned, but I should soon. I keep telling myself, Pam has been canning for 50 years, and doing it safely. I only follow your directions, and the Ball Blue Book recipes. I’m OCD about following your direction and the USDA rules. I even write on my canning lids how long and what pressure I processed, in case my mind tells me later I might not have done it correctly.🥴 Thank you so much! I would never have the courage to pressure can low acid foods without your help. Many Blessings to you and Jim! I love your comment Wendy! Another example that knowledge is power and you have demonstrated the power to take a step into new territory. To set your mind at ease when you get ready to at your canned food, just boil it for at least 10 minutes as you heat it up which will destroy any toxin in the unlikely case any is present.

Thank you dear lady for sharing your wealth of knowledge. I did not know that the solids only went half way up the jar. Thank you for that information and for all the precious time you take from your life to share this valuable information. God Bless and keep you healthy.

I particularly loved this video. I have frozen soups for many years, but love the availability of shelf stable soups. BTW I found the red ladle on Amazon as well as the silicone cup. It is a game changer when filling jars. I can't wait for your new cookbook. ❤

Thanks Rose you named USDA for home canning. Even for people outside USA is this very useful information to study and use it as manual.
I will try to make your soup also. It looks delicious!
