Only the 13th double century ever in ODI. First time it’s been done by someone who isn’t an opener (2 starting batters). First time it’s been done in the run chase (bottom of the innings for baseball fans). First male Australian to do it. So glad you covered this.
To add some context for non-cricketing viewers, there have been over 4,600 one day international games played, with both teams batting, so a double century is incredibly rare. To hit a double ton without being able to move your feet just makes it even more insane.

Not only that - Maxwell did this batting number 6. He came in with 4 wickets down. Only one other player batting number 6 had made more than 150, and that was Kapil Dev, a legend of Indian cricket, who did this in a 60 over game, batting first against much weaker opposition in Zimbabwe. He made 175.
This wasn't a number 3 coming in after one of the openers got out cheaply. This was a number 6, coming in at the end of the Powerplay (which is the easiest time to score), doing this in a 50 over game against the most talented Afghanistan side in history, who had a genuine shot at making the semi finals, while chasing a big score, with his team right up against it.
There really is no equal to this innings. Nothing in the history of ODI cricket comes even remotely close to this innings. Hell, in test cricket (the format that goes on for 5 days and has existed since the 1880s), only one player has scored more runs in the 4th (and last) innings of the game while chasing, and won.
There is a genuine argument you could make that this is the greatest innings of all time. Not just in the history of the World Cup. Not just in the history of ODI cricket. Of all time.

No, this is even weirder. Afghanistan is closer to a triple A team qualifying to play in a tournament against 8 MLB teams (and the Netherlands, also triple A), with two MLB teams being knocked out by them just to get here (Zimbabwe being a bad MLB team, West Indies being mismanaged, but formerly a perennial World Series tier team).
The Netherlands upset South Africa in the tournament, which was huge. If Afghanistan win this (which they should have), they probably finish in the top four and go into the WLCS instead of Australia (possibly the Yankees or Red Sox of international cricket, along with India and England - who also got beat by Afghanistan).
This is like LeHigh Valley being three outs from winning a playoff series in the MLB vs Chicago, with a DH who can barely move, a catcher who is not a great hitter, and a pitcher who has to bat because of injuries to batters next up.
Oh, and you are up by ten runs, and somehow you lose, because life isn't fair (and then you have to return to your country run by the Taliban to boot...)

Yes Jomboy, you got it right, that was hit to deep cover for that four :) One thing to note, Maxi wasn't just fielding for those previous two hours. He also bowled 10 overs, the maximum allowed from a single bowler in a ODI, and took a wicket. He essentially pitched two full innings, fielded (brilliantly) and batted for the entire game, in 38*C (100 *F) heat, in baseball terms :)

Extra context, 10 overs is 60 deliveries (pitches), he took 10% of his team's wickets (outs), is absolutely of Australia's top 10 fielders of all time, and then did this, with cramps, back spasms, and no legs.

Last year, Maxwell broke his leg so badly it was almost amputated. A week before this game he suffered a massive concussion falling out of a golf cart. Then he batted like this without being able to move.
He's tough as nails.
That reverse sweep for 6 is insane if you have ever played cricket. With a functioning body it is as close to the hardest shot imaginable. Without legs 😮 insane!
I played 10 seasons at club level as a kid, and I still can't really comprehend how ridiculous that shot is.

Honestly I can hit sixes pretty comfortably - but without footwork I can't even get the ball past the 30 yard circle. It doesn't even make sense how strong Maxwell is

All they needed to do was scare Maxy with 2 bouncers every over, and give him outside Yorkers, or at least good length balls, instead, all they did was give him balls in his batting arc, and the other balls were hit behind the stump, which could be easily solved by a fielder. Again, give him leg side bowl, put your whole team on leg side because dude cannot move, and that's all really Afghanis needed to do.
But yes, Maxi is the king ngl, they even won the WC, deserved it.

Maxwell never made sense he's an anomaly.
Luckily, I stayed up and got to witness it live. Even when we were 7/91 (and a 0.2% chance of winning) at about 1:30 in the morning, I had an inkling that something special could still happen. The game ended past 3:30 am. But Maxwell's innings gave me the inspiration to struggle through a sleepy work day.

30+ years of watching cricket and I can attest to this as the greatest cricketing inning of all time; in fact, one of the greatest performances in all of sports. I'm gonna be honest I have no idea what was going on lol but as a sports fan in general I understand the fact that this was epic. Fighting through pain to do what he needs to do...no quit in that guy.
without having to know anything about cricket, Australia were way down and had virtually no chance of winning. This guy pulled of something that has never been done by a batter as far down the order as him, and he did it while in a lot of physical pain, and he did it in the world cup.
Pretty much down 2-6 late in the deciding match of a wildcard series and your injured two way player somehow hits 3-4 homers (with a pitcher getting on base to help) to win it.
Down 20-0 after bottom 4 and you don’t even need bottom 9 to win it coz one guy somehow drives in all 20 runs and 10 of them are with full body cramps

And because of that innings we qualified for the finals . We won the Semi-final (South Africa) and and then beat the home team (India) who were red hot favourites to win the world cup. From that innings forward we looked like we would just keep marching through any opposition. A truly special moment for Australian sport.

Tbf, the Afghans were bowling shit as well. No short ball, or bouncer or wide Yorkers. Furthermore, Afghanistan used a lot of spinners which didn't help as well.
They got sloppy in the field towards the end in the field. They don't have the killer instinct to always close out these kinds of matches it seems.
Though it does bring some history to the matchup and will and will make it that much sweeter when they do get their first win against Aus.

I’ve known maxi since he was a kid running about the footy field with my son .. he was a freak player then and still is. You’ll never see anything as astonishing as that batting innings again in your lifetime. Unbelievable performance
I work with a bunch of indians and Nepalis that are not allowed to have smartphones at work so they asked me if we could watch a few games. I was surprised with how entertaining it was and really enjoyed watching. Definitely going to keep my eye on it after this insane feat

its been called the best individual innings in an ODI, definitely one of the gutsiest. being able to lock your legs and still maneuver the ball to all parts is truly phenomenal, to save the innings too makes it a once in a lifetime knock

Without his innings in this match Australia couldn't have gone on to win the World Cup Final. He's a god in Australia.

Almost as impressive as scoring 201 runs injured like that was the bowler partner keeping the whole thing alive seeing 68 balls. Both really stuck it through and made the miracle happen.

Only thing you kinda missed - Maxwell called for the review on the LBW, he thought he was out and called for it in desperation more than anything and yeah, turns out he wasn't out.
Also, Maxwell didn't just have to field; he bowled his full alloted ten overs and took one wicket. So it was a full on, all round performance - and the only time a man has scored 200 in a one day game whilst not opening the batting (it's been done a few other times in men's cricket but only by men who have opened the batting)

@@dgill441 the two batters that take the field for their team are referred to as the opening batters..that is they open the innings. Skilled positions much the same as the leadoff hitter in baseball is. Left handed and right handed combinations are often sought after so as to be offputting for the opening bowlers' line.
@@dgill441 Not generally the best batsmen but with good judgement of reading the pace of the wicket and knowledge / experience of the opposition's opening bowlers...As a rule the "best" batsman in a team is the #3 or "first drop" and the hardest hitter at #6-7. Maxwell is often a #6.
Dude this breakdown is awesome. The only thing I would add is that when the physio came out the second time Maxy was also suffering back spasms. Maxy admitted publicly at that point he wanted to come off but the physio advised him the cramping would worsen if he did to the degree that he probably wouldn’t make it back out onto the ground. The rest as they say is history.

Can’t discount the fact that Afghanistan have only being playing international level cricket for maybe 10 years, and they had Australia (arguably the best cricketing nation in the world) on the ROPES. Maxi single handedly saved us with this innings, but maximum respect to the Afghanis

Baseball fans, you must realise just how important footwork is in batting. It may sound crazy, but as kids, we are coached WAY more on footwork than how to swing the bat.
It’s not just because of power, but because of accuracy as well. If you don’t move properly, you start “fishing” for balls outside your eye-line and that is how you’ll get a ton of edges and be caught by the fielders.
Footwork is especially important against spin bowling. Afghanistan has the best spinners in the world, and they’re playing in India, the best place for spin bowling. I hope this adds a bit more context to how unbelievable this is.
As someone who has done both (baseball first, cricket later in life). I have to say that I don't think baseball people really do understand what's required to hit a cricket ball, and baseball really doesn't use footwork in the same way. Yes your lower body is important in hitting a baseball and thats where all your power comes from and you need good technique, but its always the same action. In baseball you are really trying to perfect the perfect swing, see the pitch, and get the bat to it.
I maintain that hitting a baseball remains the single hardest individual action in sports. That being said going out and scoring runs while defending your wicket in cricket over the course of dozens of balls is every bit as difficult in its own right.
before anyone gets mad at me, cricket people don't understand how hard it is to hit a baseball either. I'm just as sick of "they get 3 chances to hit a full toss, easy mate" as I am of all the "crickets not a real sport" comments. Both sides can do better.
It's not the same as hitting a low full toss though, it's like trying to hit a beamer - the sort of delivery that gets you thrown from the game (at least from being allowed to bowl) - admittedly the batter is also not expecting that sort of delivery in cricket so wouldn't be set for it either. I'm a bowler so my batting isn't great, but I can sometimes hit a cricket ball, I couldn't hit baseballs when I've tried, it's a different skill.@@thejesusaurus6573
@@thejesusaurus6573 You have clearly not ever been coached properly in what constitutes a proper baseball swing. Transfer of weight from back to front feet and pivoting of the hips through the contact zone is what kids are coached from under 8's. Nor have you apparently attended a batting session such as those held before elite games where the skilled batters hit from the cage and place their hits around the field. I have coached kids in both sports as an accredited coach for over four decades.
They are two totally different skills which is why baseball batting skills have not entred into cricket yet as indeed fielding and bowling / pitching skills have.
@@flamingfrancisI think they're saying that footwork is an absolute necessity in cricket, whereas in baseball you can maybe get by slightly more. You won't have good results either way, but the emphasis on footwork is literally THE foundation of cricket batting even when blocking the ball, where baseball has a lot more emphasis on the swing.

In my mid-40s and I can feel life's elbow-thumb-elbow starting to wear off.
This reminds me of when I got a 2 run single with 2 broken legs. I had got in a head on car crash 3 months before and have titanium rods in both of my legs. Only got to bat because our 1st baseman was late to the game, but with no legs smacked a ball to Left Center and then realized Oh Shit, I gotta run. Runner on 3rd scored easy, and 2nd was a bang bang at the plate. I was still about 15ft from 1st when the pitcher got the ball back from the play at the plate, but I made it to 1st before anyone noticed lmao. I was exhausted after that, though it's still one of my proudest memories.

Literally the most impressive cricket innings of all time. Context, moment and winning the game single handedly. Incredible stuff. The first thing you're taught when batting is to move your feet. It's such a crucial part of the game. He score around 50 runs with zero footwork. Australia has now made the WC Final and faces India in a few days.
Update: They beat India in India in front of 150 000 Rabid Indians fans. The Indian cricket council even fixed the pitch in favor of India and did everything they could to borderline cheat. But Australia still won.

As a baseball nerd myself who moved to the UK and loves cricket now, Its crazy to me how all baseball fans don't instantly fall in love with cricket! its so good. Still too many snarky comments on these videos. Can't believe people find a way to hate.

They don't care for the knowledge of skills, tactics etc but rather prefer to attack the fact that they see it as America's game.There are reallly only two nations that have been playing baseball almost as long as Americans have (refer to the IBAF Baseball World Cup) ...Australia and Britain. And it isn't until recent times (since 1990's) that accredited baseball coaches have been employed into elite cricket bodies that skills have been introduced. Australia has produced around 40 MLB players and back in the 90's one of them, an eight season veteran and All Star, started giving ideas to some great Aussie bowlers especially in terms of grips for change=ups and the like. A former national baseball coach was also employed by CA.

needed that many cause the team that batted first scored that many. (you generally score a lot of runs in cricket, its a high-ish score but nothing extraordinary.)
Team batted first ( Afghanistan scored 291/6 runs in 50 overs ( 1 over = 6 balls / pitches ) And in reply Australia were 90/7 in 20 overs. that's they needed 200 runs more in 30 overs ( 180 balls ) with only 3 wickets in hand. And Maxwell is the only recognised batsman. Others to come including pat Cummins were bowlers/pitchers. And Maxwell got cramps/hamstring so he couldn't move his legs. ( Moving feet is important in cricket batting unlike baseball ). So these context make Maxwell's 200 the greatest innings in 50 over cricket.
Mate, absolutely love your call on this. What Maxi did was off the charts. We know him to do insane, rapid, unorthodox knocks, but usually with both legs working.

That was an amazing performance. I'm Dutch and was neutral in this match (as we weren't going to overtake either side, still happy with our World Cup though with 2 wins as the rank outsiders). But my goodness, what a great watch that was. Glad you mentioned Pat Cummins too, his performance can't be overestimated. He was the perfect partner for Maxwell, didn't take risks himself and let Maxwell do it whilst not going out himself. He is still a very good batter, so should Maxwell have gone out late on (or if he had to retire hurt), Cummins could likely have finished it but that wasn't needed obviously.
Hey! Cummins is actually capable of whacking the ball! He even knocked a 60 for KKR team in the IPL!

I saw this match live last week while I was on my cruise. I turned it on just as Afghanistan started taking the field. I'm not the biggest fan of cricket, but there wasn't much else on and I was waiting for my dinner seating. I figured Afghanistan has the match easily won after the sixth out. Maxwell couldn't be stopped. The crowd is going crazy, the announcers are going crazy, and I ended up getting into it big time. When he hit that final six, nothing but the chills...good on you, Maxwell! _Aussie, Aussie, Aussie...Oy, Oy, Oy!_
The greatest single moment in Australian history right there.. for generations to come someone's kid will say "I can't do it no mo" and some Steve Irwin lookin dude will go "ya think Maxie just gave up? No he didn't now get your ass back out there and finish mowing the weeds" or whatever they mow. Or maybe they don't mow they just fight off roos. Either way.. it'll be used.. a lot glad I got the jomboy breakdown so I know wtf they're talking about when the elbow thumb elbow don't work no more

One of the best decisions I ever made was to stay up and watch this. What possessed me to do so after the dismal early scenes of our batting collapse...I do not know. But the saying that "nothing good ever happens after 2am" was emphatically disproven. What a display. Just unrivalled

I'm watching Aus vs West indies right now. During an ad break highlights of this innings started playing, with the score at 91-7 I start to think it's a historic win for Afghanistan, but wow was I wrong. One of the greatest clutches in cricket history

As an Australian who now lives in the US, I totally missed this somehow. Didn't know the World Cup was on. That Afghanistan is even in the World Cup seems crazy (no West Indies?!?) And that they were in a position to beat Australia (not quite the team from 20 years ago but still...) Feel kind of bad for them losing but incredible knock from Maxwell.

West Indies didn't qualify, they only finished 5th in the World Cup Qualifier behind Sri Lanka, The Netherlands, Scotland and Zimbabwe. Only the top 2 qualified: Sri Lanka and The Netherlands.
There's going to be a T20 WC in USA this year, West Indies will also be there and 20 teams are going to compete

One of the most astonishing innings I've ever seen - a true mental and physical feat, and I'm glad it's reaching a wider audience.
Another thing to mention is that not only did he field beforehand but he also bowled 10 overs (at least 60 “pitches”, google tells me baseball teams average 145 odd pitches for an entire game ) in that heat as well.
This is the innings Maxi was born to play. He actually practices those types of shots, just using his eagle eye, catlike hand-eye co-ordination and lean and mean upper body strength. He is controversial at times because he is a real one-off type of player who is not as consistent as some of the other stars of the game. This was the best "I told you so!" I could imagine!

I'm over 40 now, I've been watching and playing cricket for over 30 years.
I had the pleasure of watching the Australian golden generation playing in the late 80's to early 2000s, but this was the greatest individual innings I've ever seen.
Maxwell has, in a single innings at bat, secured his place as an immortal of the game!
When even Sachin Tendulkar is saying your innings was the greatest he's ever seen, you know you've just done something very, very special.

I initially followed you for baseball and now whenever something happens in another sport I know to expect a breakdown 😇
So, I guess I misunderstood Jimmy, at the beginning. I thought he said, they only needed one out, but then why the backup? So, it was one more batter, if they get the out, or did he need to hit that many runs within that number of balls thrown on the screen?
I thought I got the basic scoring rules, but I obviously didn’t.
Was it just the fact he got so many points, without an out, or was it their last hope to win?
I think I’m more confused by my question, as I’m typing it.
@@CorbCorbin The first team to hit sets a score, and the second team has to beat it. The game ends when the second team loses all of their batters except one (10 outs, you need two batters on the field to keep playing), or when they exceed the first team's score, or if 50 overs are bowled. Realistically, the game would have been over if Glenn Maxwell got himself out, as the remaining batters left aren't good enough to chase more than 50-60 runs (because they're specialist bowlers).
When Maxwell came in to bat, they needed 201 runs off of 189 balls, so if Afghanistan take one of the two catching opportunities, the game is essentially finished. It is impressive because not only did he score so many runs, he got almost half his total score while suffering from back spasms and cramping.
@@CorbCorbin so a batting team with 7 out are defending their 8th wicket out of the 10 they started with. Let's say Maxwell goes out - then Zampa (shown getting ready) would come in to help Cummins defend the 9th wicket. If Cummins then goes out, then the last Aussie (Hazlewood I think?) would come in with Zampa to defend the 10th wicket, at which point the next out ends Australia's innings.
The reason it was amazing was not just the 201 (which is still nuts in this format of the game), but that the result was a 200-run partnership for the 8th wicket. Normally being 7-out means you're depending on your bowlers to score runs, who are generally worse batters and are often dismissed very cheaply. This added to the fact that Maxwell couldn't move and was well within his rights to retire hurt but instead hunkered down and smashed it out was the cherry on top.
He wasn't the last batter but he was by far the best batter out of those that were left. Those after him were bowlers who would have had to do all of the hitting. They were virtually no chance of scoring 200 runs with only 2 outs left if Maxwell had got out@@CorbCorbin
I'm not sure exactly what your question is but at the beginning of the video Aus need 201 runs and they have 7 men out already (3 outs remaining). That is a MASSIVE ask from any team or any players. They would have 3 more batters after maxwell but the thing is when you get that low in your batting order it is no longer batmen or even aprt-time batsmen coming to play. It will be your bowlers, who generally aren't strong batsmen. There are exceptions of course and at the pro level you would still expect most bowlers to be able to defend and score some singles. But they were in a very poor position at the point this video begins. One where you would generally say there is virtually no possibility to win.
To try to answer your question. Strictly speaking in a purely theoretical sense maxwell was not their last hope. Practically speaking in any reasonable sense, maxwell was their last hope.

I just want to point out that Pat Cummins staying there was also a great feat. As the captain of the team he made it his role to just support his guy in the other side, knowing that he could also whack a few. He saw the history in the making and took a step back.
As a kiwi who enjoys both baseball and cricket your breakdowns are some of the best videos to watch on the tube.

The coolest part it he nearly had a leg amputated a year ago and yet this innings dragged Australia to the World Cup Final. Which they won. Undisputed champions.
